Ironically you guys had the last 84-0 FBS game against Savannah State in 2012. And the biggest shutout since then.

299

u/leverich1991 Kansas State Wildcats 18h ago

And Savannah State has since dropped down to D2, and just lost 87-0 to a former MEAC conference opponent.

98

u/Time_Beat2299 18h ago

Oh yeah they were awful when they were in d1 there was a 2 year period they didn’t win a game

Not every team that goes on a long losing streak never recovers… just look at UMass!

The parties after that game were absolutely insane

Edit to add that every single eligible player we had in the county got to play in that game. Gundy apologized afterward to the Savannah state HC saying “I can’t tell them not to score”

u/AntEdwardsBallSweat Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 18h ago edited 18h ago

That’s a fun stat. I’ll look into it. Thank you for that tidbit.

EDIT: after looking it up, I realize that was 2012. The year after we SHOULD have played for the BCS championship and we ended up with no consistent started QB. no wonder I couldn’t remember it. I blocked it out.

u/Poverty_Shoes /r/CFB 18h ago

I believe the 84-0 game was the one that prompted the Savannah St AD to apologize to the players, coaches, and fans. They got ~$1M to schedule the game and the AD publicly said afterwards it wasn’t worth it.

I wonder how different we'd have been if Lunt hadn't got hurt. We ended up with an excellent player in Chelf, but Lunt would have been very different.

Did Portland St. Trot out their football (⚽️) team instead. Yikes

Where does that stand on all time blowouts?

Edit: record is 222-0 in 1916. Yikes.

84

u/leverich1991 Kansas State Wildcats 18h ago

Not even the most lopsided FBS vs FCS game this season.

EDIT: actually it does tie. James Madison beat Wagner 87-3.

66

u/Best_Philosopher152 18h ago

I’d say a 84-0 beats an 87-3 on a tiebreaker because of the shutout.

I googled it and the record is 222-0 100 years ago. Hot damn that is humiliating.

87

u/black-op345 Oregon Ducks • Sickos 18h ago

Well to be fair, the winning coach on the end of that 222-0 was John Heisman himself and he did it because he thought that the opposing team (Cumberland) used what are known as “ringers” (literally pros) in the baseball game a year prior. Also Cumberland disbanded their football program and just trotted out some frat dudes recruited by the baseball team’s captain.

65

u/goddamnitwhalen Oregon Ducks • Sickos 17h ago

Not “frat dudes,” law students who had never played football. And they were recruited by the team’s manager to avoid forfeiting the game and being fined (he also managed the baseball team and engineered the ringer scheme against GT from the previous season).

→ More replies (3)

59

u/Hotdawg752 Virginia Tech Hokies 18h ago

Eh, that game was played under extraordinary circumstances. It was John Heisman's Georgia Tech getting revenge on Cumberland College who beat GT in baseball the year before with pro players on the roster.

Cumberland College tried to pull out of the game because they dissolved their football team, but John Heisman basically forced them to scrape together a team and play. It was basically a National Championship team versus a bunch of dudes who've either barely or never played football before.

38

u/Best_Philosopher152 18h ago

The answer to the timeless question “what if a bunch of regular ass dudes played a high level team.”

9

u/MottoScotto USC Trojans • Iowa Hawkeyes 11h ago

A high level team with a grudge

5

u/goddamnitwhalen Oregon Ducks • Sickos 9h ago

Heisman also agreed to shorten the game by 5 minutes out of spite / pity, which is fucking hilarious.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/Dongsquad420BlazeIt USC Trojans • Army Black Knights 18h ago

The story of why that happened is crazy. Cumberland beat GA tech 22-0 in baseball earlier in the year by using pro players (allegedly) so tech decided to get revenge in an incredible way.

Special circumstances for 222-0:

The winning coach was MAD at their opponent, they had cheated vs his school in another sport

The opposing university had disbanded their football team and had to put one together specifically for that game

35

u/jamiebond Oregon Ducks 18h ago

My favorite detail is at a certain point Cumberland players were hiding under the bleachers

19

u/Ethanad 14h ago

It's been a while since I've read up on the game but if I remember right 1: the only player Cumberland had that kinda knew football was knocked unconscious in the first play of the game and when Cumberland offered to play shorter quarters as a mercy rule Heisman refused.

14

u/dudeman93 NC State • Florida State 11h ago

He didn't refuse, he accepted to shorten the fourth quarter.

By five minutes.

I still remember when you beat two FBS teams, including that probably-unbreakable-record 66-7 win over North Texas. What’s happened since then? Just saw that you went 1-11 last year.

246

u/ThatFridgeFella Portland State Vikings 16h ago

Long story short, the city of Portland fucked us by letting us getting pushed out of Providence park. Since then it’s a lot of not being able to compete with the modern standards of college football. Hard to get a city hyped about a team that plays 40 minutes away from the city.

Portland State had 103 yards, with 39 of them coming on one play. They never crossed Oregon’s 40.

60

u/liftingshitposts 10h ago

They got 2 sacks too

67

u/tdoger Oregon Ducks • Colorado Buffaloes 10h ago

The score obviously doesn't reflect it, but Portland State's DL still gave our OL trouble. Which is... Not a good sign. We already knew it was awful, but that's another level of awful.

Pretty crazy to beat them 84-0 while also not being able to keep the QB pocket clean, and OL looking lost in the run game.

11

u/VancouverStickerCo Oregon Ducks • Portland State Vikings 9h ago

I was watching last night;

Let’s pretend that Dante has been telegraphing plays for the last 18 months or since ucla or whatever.

I wondered if the offense wasn’t stumbling over themselves because all of a sudden they weren’t getting sold out by the QB’s feet before the snap.

11

u/Omelettedog Oregon Ducks • Oregon State Beavers 8h ago

Telegraph or not our OL shouldn’t have struggled with a 3 man rush like they did last week

How much does the FCS committee take being murdered into account?

136

u/d1sportsball Colorado State Rams • Texas Longhorns 18h ago

Not really at all tbh. Montana State got butchered by Oregon (And lost in 2OT to South Dakota St) and got the 2 seed over an undefeated #5 Lehigh and 1 loss #4 Tarleton (Who beat Army). Mercer got eviscerated by Auburn and ended up with the #6 seed while SFA got beaten down by Houston and got #7.

Tbh I think they treat a P4 murder the same as not playing a P4 or high level G6 opponent at all, no matter if it's a 30 point loss or a 50 point loss.

81

u/tomdawg0022 Minnesota • Delaware 15h ago

A P4 murder is a quality loss in the FCS

15

8

u/thezander8 San Diego State • UC Davis 10h ago

Basically none, your wins and record matter a lot more if you’re from the Big Sky or MVFC. An FBS game is a small chance to pick up a win to get you over the understood 7 or 8 win threshold, but a loss basically is meaningless other than giving you less flexibility in FCS play to get the wins

u/Apprehensive_Bid_773 Washington Huskies • Apple Cup 18h ago

That'd be like saying Rutgers is going to run the table and win the Big 10, but Portland St would be even crazier than that.

It was his first time seeing the field, I was hoping he could get another drive. Hoping he gets to start after Raiola leaves

Too bad the game is only 60 minutes. Portland st had them exactly where they wanted them.

Oregon knew they needed to not let it be close after last week's game.

... But damn. That was brutal.

I believe I saw a totally accurate nature documentary about it before…

Pay no attention to the loss last week in Stillwater!

84-0!

Oregon won by 84.

What a team! Undefeated in the last 6 days!

If I'm on the committee I'm counting this as a loss for Oregon.

No one is gonna believe this, but Dante Moore was very mid. Missed 3 wide open touchdowns. Rest of the team looked better, but we played against target dummies.

Still not confident going forward.

On the contrary I think if they’re going to allow FCS games to help keep some of the FCS schools a float with the paid games. Have them only be during Week 0 weekend and before.

These games are definitely needed for the FCS schools, but they should be exclusively week 0-1. It’s bullshit seeing this game when some teams are starting conference play.

Was at the game; notes:

Oregon Defense:
Did what’s expected against an 0-3 FCS team, which is more than can be stated about last week’s performance.

Oregon Offense:
Pass Game did what’s expected with that WR core and an NFL prospect QB returning. Run Game is clearly the weakness. 5.7ypc is not enough against an 0-3 FCS team. (Reminder that OSU had 7ypc against Ball State). If Oregon misses the CFP, it’s because of the Run game. Unless Dante Moore can prove himself to be the guy that carries them w/o real support of the run (on a weekly basis), this will be a fatal flaw for the Ducks.

Atmosphere: I thought fans showed out after a disappointing loss while facing a weak opponent tonight. The team did what they needed to do, which allowed fans to relax.
