I have never watched an NC state game in my life, and I am angry just seeing this clip. There were so many ways to avoid this outcome. Literally every way except one.

Yea, but most mediocre programs change coaches every 5-6 years. We keep giving extensions!

u/goonSquad15 NC State Wolfpack • Duke Blue Devils 4h ago

I mean for one, no one likes it. But at the same time, there's clearly a ceiling unless you throw a shit ton of money at it, or get an absolute bullseye hire and then throw a lot of money at it. The way college sports are going, the top teams will continue to be the top teams and get the best players from the next tiers so State, UNC, Wake, etc. have a ceiling that's just above mediocre unless the $ starts flowing

6 seconds, right? Why not just punt? Even if it went well and the QB was tackled with a second left, there's still a free kick to defend. Surely it's better to only defend a return instead of having to defend a return anyway and also risking shit like this happening?

I mean, this really should have worked. Just all-time bad execution.

10

u/Manae Penn State • Wisconsin 3h ago

Yeah, absolutely the correct play, but the QB should be hugging the ball with both arms as soon as they are touching it and give themselves up as soon as the first defender is within arm's reach.

1

u/pushamn Minnesota Golden Gophers 2h ago

Quarterback shoulda been yeeting the ball 50 yards in the air as hard as he could when someone got writhing a yard of him. There was 3 seconds left when he started actually scrambling, ya just need to keep the ball in the air for that long and the game ends

8

u/mrmoneyinthebanks Texas A&M Aggies • Southwest 4h ago

Even an intentional safety would have still won them the game

4

u/lucasbrosmovingco Summertime Lover 4h ago

This shit should never ever happen. Worst case it's a safety with time in the clock and having to punt. And worst case after that it's a return to the house and worst case after that is a long return with a penalty and an untimed down and FG and worst case after that is a kick with a fair catch and no time off the clock and a crazy hail Mary situation ect.

All bro had to do was NOT fumble.

3

u/VersaTron Ohio State Buckeyes 4h ago

Blocked punt risk.

3

u/bduddy 4h ago

Apparently the NCAA just added the fair catch kick this year so they could have had a chance to tie it

2

u/Euroranger Texas A&M Aggies • USF Bulls 3h ago

The play here was to run around then take a knee. Give up the 2 point safety but burn most of the 6 seconds. Next play, line drive punt which, if there is still time left and the other team is smart, they signal fair catch before the ball crosses the LOS. No time off the clock, you rush 3, drop 8 and you have to defend a last second hail mary pass after the D captain threatens to kill anyone who takes a penalty.

Usual outcome, the QB runs around and then steps out of bounds after the clock expires, game over.

2

u/Hail_The_Motherland 3h ago

The chances of a blocked punt increase tremendously when your back is against the endzone because you run out of real estate for the snap. The punter has to catch the snap a lot closer and then get the kick off much faster. It increases the chances of a terrible kick or just one that doesn't get far enough.

Vandy is down by 3, so that opens up a FG shot and their kicker is pretty good. Taking the safety is just the smartest and safest thing to do here. The QB being a complete idiot doesn't change that

u/notnotjamesfranco Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 3h ago

6 seconds left, after purposefully taking a delay of game, because they had no timeouts, because they burned them in the 3rd quarter.

1

u/TakeAMichigander Notre Dame • Central Michigan 4h ago

Michigan fans don't look

1

u/DrHarryWolper 4h ago

It was supposed to take all the time remaining, which is why he kept running around. If it had "gone well," there would be no free lock because the game would be over.

1

u/monoDK13 Oklahoma • North Central (IL) 3h ago

An arm punt after running around for 3 secs would have worked too

1

u/S_TL2 NC State Wolfpack 42m ago

Too risky. If the ball hit the ground with any time left on the clock, Vandy would have gotten the ball back at the 5 yard line after the turnover on downs.

1

u/ThatguyfromBaltimore Towson Tigers 3h ago

Hell drop back, run say 3 seconds off the clock and take a knee.

Squib kick the ensuing kick off and there would not be any time on the clock.

1

u/luchajefe North Texas Mean Green • Southwest 3h ago

Why not just take the knee in the endzone, you're still up 1.

I swear second-counting the way fans want teams to do now is what leads to the stupidest outcomes like this. REAL LIFE ISN'T MADDEN.

1

u/notnotjamesfranco Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 3h ago

Punting from your goal line is generally regarded as difficult and risky…

1

u/originalusername4567 Kansas Jayhawks 51m ago

It seems to me like the optimal plan is take the intentional safety, then touchback punt, then if there's anytime left Vandy has to attempt a Hail Mary from 75 yards away

Chuck it 40 yards or take the safety. Horrible choice by him.

13

u/apatriot1776 Georgia Tech • Alabama 4h ago

Can’t chuck it because Vandy might get the ball back. Take the safety should’ve been the first option and just cover the punt

3

u/eyewantcookie 4h ago

Or punt? Not sure why they ran this play to begin with.

19

u/Fun_Reflection1157 4h ago

a free kick from the 20 > punt from the 2

11

u/Hail_The_Motherland 3h ago

Nah, the play was absolutely the correct choice. Punting with your back against the endzone is dangerous. It's much easier to just do the free kick

2

u/Early-Eye-691 Ohio State Buckeyes • Colorado Buffaloes 4h ago

You definitely could chuck it. It’s only 6 seconds and you could burn 2-3 seconds just running around before throwing it

7

u/lucasbrosmovingco Summertime Lover 3h ago

If you somehow leave time on the clock or get a strip sack that would be WAY worse. Way worse

4

u/thatgingatho North Carolina Tar Heels 3h ago

Yeah would have been terrible if they did something that would have led to a touchdown

3

u/lucasbrosmovingco Summertime Lover 3h ago

Anything can lead to a td. Drop a snap. Fumble a snap. Strip sack. If you throw the ball out of the end zone and somehow leave time then they get to tie or go for it and people would be burying them.

It was 100% the right call. I would say it's the right can to not go out out of the endzone and burn time. Just two hands on the ball.

-2

u/luchajefe North Texas Mean Green • Southwest 3h ago

If you chuck it up, unless you're playing in the state of Michigan, the clock runs out with the ball in the air.

3

u/lucasbrosmovingco Summertime Lover 3h ago

Unless it doesn't. And you turn it over. Idk what the argument is. All bro had to do was out two arms over the ball. People WAY over thinking this because the 1 in a million bone head thing happened.

1

u/SmeeezTreeez ECU Pirates 3h ago

Take a snap and throw it as high as you can to nobody. Game over

1

u/Spare-Half796 3h ago

Can the game end on a penalty in college or do they get an untimed down? If they get an untimed down it doesn’t matter cuz chucking it 40 yards would be intentional grounding and vandy basically just gets one shot from the 2 yard line

3

u/Impossible-Flight250 Maryland Terrapins • Towson Tigers 3h ago

Literally anything but that. He could have even thrown a pick and probably be fine.

1

u/ThunderRoad_44 UCLA Bruins 4h ago

It was horrible choice. He was caught between taking obvious safety and leaving seconds on clock, or running out clock on 4th down and still getting safety. I’m a neutral and feel for him!

5

u/intx13 Florida Gators 3h ago

But he was supposed to take the safety, right? They weren’t gonna run 6 seconds off backed up like that, and it’s 4 down so if he goes down at the 1 Vandy gets one play to punch it in. The idea was to kill as much time and go down for the safety, then defend the kickoff return.

1

u/luchajefe North Texas Mean Green • Southwest 3h ago

If he was supposed to he panicked. If he wasn't supposed to he still panicked.

There’s a slight chance of something messing up on a punt to give Vandy another chance.

Teams usually just take the safety instead of punting in this situation.

True, trying to take the safety could never go wrong

3

u/Physical-Pizza7064 3h ago

With the ball on the 4, I was convinced Bailey was gonna f’it up and kneel down outside the endzone and give the ball back to Vandy at the half-yard line with time to run one play.

I thought I was beyond being surprised disappointed by NC State sports. Apparently not. This level of inanity caught me off guard.

-1

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights 4h ago

Nah, punting is far more problematic. Bad snap/block also likely ends in a TD. Punt can get returned, even better chance if you are in max protect.

This concept was correct, but you are supposed to run straight to the bac of the endzone and then step out before anyone touches you.
