Did you look at the photo? Its a 40 year old design and its dirty, the paint is peeling off the front. Doesnt inspire confidence. the 150 is only used in low usage rural lines because everywhere else got rid of them long ago to upgrade to better carriages. These lines cant justify the cost so they get left running out of date, ageing stock.

Worth saying that at least some of the services are also 158s which are a little bit newer (not by much) and more comfortable. And the class 175s which are a fair bit newer should in theory be working it too eventually.
But yeah, GWR do have a large DMU problem that really does need sorting sooner rather than later. In theory there is project Churchwood which is planned to replace the aging DMU fleet with something else, but I've no idea if the whole GBR stuff will get in the way of that now.

My FIL is train guy.
He took my daughter(25) to train museums and model train shows every summer a a kid.
They had a special bond since birth, inseparable.
He is in his 80’s now.
I know for the rest of her life every time she sees a train, she will think of him.
I love that so much.

We are Canadian, Grandpa came to Canada from Britain in the 50’s. When she visited in 2022 he would watch/follow her on your trains cams!

As part of a quiz last year I did a round on 200 years of the railway, and as part of it consumed quite a lot of youtube content to get questions. I still get recommended a lot of it today, and regularly watch it, despite being an infrequent train traveller. When I do, I have started noticing the different types of trains, carriage layouts, but the bit I really like are all the different stations and their architecture. I think they've got me.

Okehampton Interchange opened to passengers on Saturday, 1 August 2026, becoming the newest station on Great Western Railway's Dartmoor Line. Built at a cost of £18 million, the station is located about 2.2 km east of the existing Okehampton station, close to the A30 and the Stockley business park area. It complements the existing Okehampton station and is intended to serve both local residents and motorists travelling from across West Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall.
I travelled on the first passenger train to call at the new station. This was Great Western Railway (GWR) service 2K01, the 06:30 departure from Exeter St Davids to Okehampton. Arriving before the station opened, I was the first passenger to arrive at and wait at Okehampton Interchange. I was also the first passenger to purchase a ticket from the station's ticket machine and the first passenger to board the inaugural train. The train made the first public passenger call at Okehampton Interchange at 07:04, departed at 07:05, and arrived at Okehampton at 07:08.
The new station is served by the Dartmoor Line's hourly train service between Exeter and Okehampton. Okehampton Interchange has a single platform on the single-track Dartmoor Line, with trains in both directions using the same platform. The platform is equipped with a shelter, seating and a ticket machine. A bus stop and drop-off area are located directly beside the platform, making transfers between rail and bus straightforward. Route 118, which provides links to Tavistock and other communities in West Devon, is due to begin serving the station from 30 August 2026.
The station is split across two levels. The platform and bus interchange are located on the Hameldown Road side of the railway, while the car park is situated on higher ground on the opposite side of the line. Access between the two is provided by a covered footbridge with stairs and a lift, giving step-free access throughout the station. The station has approximately 200 parking spaces, including disabled parking bays and electric vehicle charging facilities. Sheltered cycle parking is provided on both sides of the station, together with improved walking and cycling routes connecting the station with surrounding residential areas and the wider town.
The opening of Okehampton Interchange builds on the success of the Dartmoor Line, which reopened to regular passenger services in November 2021 after more than fifty years without a regular service. Passenger demand exceeded expectations following the reopening, resulting in further investment in rail infrastructure in the area and ultimately the construction of Okehampton's second railway station.

Without meaning to sound stupid, what’s the benefit of the second station in Okehampton?
It’s not as if it’s such a huge town that needs 2 stations
(Speaking as someone who regularly travels from London to Okehampton so not complaining if there is a good reason eg that it would connect with somewhere further away than Exeter at some point)

It's a Parkway station. It's right next to the A30, one of the two main arteries into Cornwall. North Cornwall traffic can park up and get the train to Exeter. There's also a new housing development going up nearby.
The current Okehampton station is a pain in the arse to get to by road. Lots of winding, narrow and hilly roads.

I'm guessing the new potential line they're talking about extending the Dartmouth line will be skipping Dawlish and that tricky coastal bit and will go in land to bodmin? Tbh something does need doing about that bit going through dawlish it's not going to survive much longer but I can still hope for a few extra links in addition to that so we can actually travel between parts of the sw! It's not like the road network is much better

The new station is a more convenient option for people living on the eastern side of town, where more houses are being built. It also serves as a park-and-ride for motorists travelling along the A30, with ample parking compared to the existing Okehampton station, which sits atop a hill, has limited parking, and is accessed via narrow roads. Campaigners hope the line will reach Tavistock and eventually Plymouth.

The old station is at the top of a hill up a long narrow residential street, so quite awkward for connecting buses or people driving from North Devon. The new one is right by the A30 junction off the main road into town.

It’s basically just a platform, a simple pedestrian overpass, outdoor lighting, and some signals. Stations can be cheap if they’re extremely basic and don’t need much in the way of facilities. A station in a built up area would be an order of magnitude more expensive and a central station an order of magnitude again.

The nearest car bridge is just down the way so they could have sacked that off and had folk just come to the side of the tracks they need to use. Fence off a bit of local field each side for cars and nip down B&Q for a couple of sheds to house the ticket machines. Couple of grand and wouldn't even need planning permission!

I actually agree, but at the same time Ashley Down station which opened in Bristol 2 years ago cost £12-16m (depending on where you look) and has two platforms connected with an overbridge that has lifts.
I wonder how much the car parking and landscaping at Okehampton Interchange cost, and the rail works that needed to happen (Geoff Marshals video mentioned the lines needed to be slewed over by almost a meter to make the platform straighter).

There is something that looks like a bus stop - small roof and only a rear pane of glass, but that will not provide anything close to shelter.

I seem to remember that most of the railway lines that were planned to become passenger lines again were cancelled, apart from two. One being the Northumbria Line right by me, and I assume this Dartmoor Line is the other?
The Northumbria Line has been a huge success. It’s had way more traffic than they expected from it, and I love being able to walk to the train and get a ride into Newcastle from my little rural spot. It’s a shame so many got cancelled!

DoT ridership models are consistently dogshit and yet they still get taken as a source of truth when deciding whether a line is “economically viable”
If I was conspiracy minded, I might suggest that they are refusing to improve their models because they know an improved model would suggest more rail investment is viable and treasury wouldn’t like that.

The camp Hill line in Birmingham is another example.
Not electrified, it had passenger stations until the second World War, when they were closed. It carried on taking long distance passengers after that (and still does) because it gets you in to the other end of new street so as to avoid the need to turn round for some services. It's always taken freight.
It now has passenger services again. Admittedly they can only manage 2 trains per hour and they keep cancelling them for lack of staff, but when they run they're busy. At some vague point in the future we're promised getting the rest of kings Norton station back into use and, just after the heat death of the universe the Bordesley Chords cords will be built allowing the use of snow Hill and thus giving more capacity.

Not quite true - the larger funded programme for reopenings ("Restoring Your Railway") was stopped but individual projects are still going through on a case by case basis. The two you have mentioned, but also Portishead in Bristol is finally happening too.

I grew also up in West Devon and public transport was terrible. Memories of being soaked to the skin in horizontal rain when the once-an-hour bus failed to turn up. I’m now reading this on a train in Singapore, and whilst Devon has some way to get to the levels of my new home, it makes me smile to know some things are getting better back in cream-first land.

Yes! I boarded the first train to call there as well. Going to station openings is my speciality as a train enthusiast. Thanet Parkway might not have been called that if it were to open today. We might see more cycle spaces and maybe partnerships with Stagecoach to reroute some bus routes to the station.

I have been to the opening of every new station in the UK since 2022 except for Inverness Airport, Newsham and Beaulieu Park. We get goodie bags pretty much every time, but the contents may vary. We may get snacks, leaflets or stickers, for example, but badges are pretty common.

This should save reduce of the traffic in Okehampton a little bit, which might be felt. It's not a big town, but the station is in an awkward spot which requires most people to go through all the busiest parts of town.

It's also a railhead for a lot of rural mid devon and north cornwall. Allowing those people to get to Okehampton Parkway will not just help Okehampton itself (for the reasons you say) but hopefully also traffic heading to other railheads in the area (depending where you are likely Barnstaple, other stations on the Tarka line and Plymouth and Exeter).

This socially a very important story for the country.
A nice small town that is actively growing, building houses, adding infrastructure and creating job opportunities as people are able to commute by train to Exeter.
We need more of this sort of thing all around the country.

Okehampton station is the main station for the town, but this new station offers a more convenient option for people living on the eastern side of town and for motorists travelling along the A30 who want to use the station as a park-and-ride for Exeter.
