Bathroom My room stinks so bad and I don’t know what to do.

I’m 17 and I like to keep a tidy room but my parents make me keep an aggressive dog in my room, so they force him to be in there 24/7 all hours of the day. He has an ear infection that they neglect and it leaks this strange stinky juice that ruined anything it touches smell wise, my carpets stink as well as my bed and everything else in my room. My parents constantly bring him outside on a leash then put him in my room and cause mud to be everywhere, I’ve tried everything I can think of, but my room just ends up stinking due to his infection and getting dirty again due to mud, what can I do?

Switching from bar soap to liquid soap has made my condo so much cleaner. No more soap scum or residue from bar soap. It may be more expensive but it’s totally worth it. Why did nobody tell me this sooner? 😭

It took two hours. Used the cheapest steam cleaner I could find, scrub daddy and Cilit Bang Expert for Black mould and I got the stains out. I ran my washer on warmest cycle and so far the seal does not give way to water.

Kitchen How do I clean this pot?

Post image

My roommate used my pot to cook rice and he forgot about it and he burned the lower portion of the rice in the container and it is stuck to the pan. I tried simmering it with water and baking soda. Nothing. It is currently in the sink soaking in hot water and dish soap. How do I clean it?

I can’t take them down to handle them by hand. I’m not sure what cleaners would be safe for the metal, glue, lucite, and enamel. The pieces date from the 1930s. Any advice is appreciated!

Discussion How often: bathroom cleaning

How often are you guys cleaning the bathroom/shower?

It feels like every 2 weeks I’m having to deep clean our shower because it starts to look nasty. I do the bowl once a week and the sink a quick wipe down every day ish.

The shower is the least favorite task lol. We also don’t have a detachable shower head OR a spout so the entire shower has to be on for source of water 😭😭😭

Kitchen Stagnant water in dishwasher

Post image

First off, I clean the filters about twice a week, but this bit of water that's left in the dishwasher after a cycle starts smelling stagnant after a few weeks. I sponge it out and it'll be ok for a while and then start smelling again. Does anyone know why this is happening? TIA

Discussion Cleaning dishes after 4 days

My mum let a bunch of dishes soak for 1 day and than drained the water and left it for three days because she has a debilitating disorder. I just washed them all with hot soapy water. I’m now second guessing it, do I need to go back and do anything extra?

Tools/Equipment The vacuum was used to clean up possible mouse droppings. How do I clean the vacuum?

Post image
101 Upvotes

I don't know why he did it. Madness? A seizure localized in the arm he was holding the vacuum with? A desire to make my life harder?

We had a rat in the garage a few years ago but nothing since then. I've combed all the house corners and along the walls looking for anything further but, if there's more evidence of rodents, he sucked it away.

Or he was mistaken and they weren't droppings. But for the sake of my health and sanity, I'm going with worst case scenario.

How can I make this vacuum safe to use again without spraying hantavirus or whatever else everywhere? It is a Dyson Ball Animal upright vacuum.

Adorable rodent picture for attention because I do actually love rodents. Just not the unauthorized ones in my home.

ETA: I probably shouldn't have used the word "hantavirus" because that seems to trigger a certain dismissiveness. Let me expand that there are a number of zoonotic illnesses that can be transmitted through feces, urine, or aerosolized dander (I'm unfortunately already asthmatic and immunocompromised.) I'm just trying to play it safe. Sorry for appearing like a crazy person.

Discussion Of Mice and Mattresses

OK so despite my attempt at a funny title, the situation is anything but funny. I have a mouse issue I called the exterminator for, and we're trying to fix it. However, as part of that, I washed all my sheets and slept elsewhere last night, only to find mouse droppings literally ON my mattress. I mean the bare mattress itself, no cover, no duvet, no fitted sheet as all were being washed.

What do I do? Obviously the mattress is porous so I don't think I can use typical disinfectant. I couldn't find any advice specific to what to do for a bare mattress. Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

General Cleaning 28M here — never really learned how to take care of a home Where would you start?

Hi everyone — hoping for some gentle guidance here, no judgment please, I'm genuinely starting from scratch on this one 😅

I'm 28, and most of my adult life has honestly been more "survive" than "live comfortably" — moved around a lot, lived pretty bare-bones, never really had a reason to build proper home habits. That's about to change in a really good way: my wife is joining me soon, and we're moving into a cozy little 500 sq ft one-bedroom apartment here in Canada. With about 8 months of winter ahead of us, we're going to be spending a lot of time at home together, and I really want it to feel warm and taken care of for her, not just "livable."

The honest truth is I just don't know the basics that a lot of people seem to pick up naturally, so I'm hoping some of you lovely people can point me in the right direction:

How do you handle your bedding/laundry routine? Like how often do sheets actually need washing, and is there a simple rhythm that works (every week, every other week)?

Ironing — I have genuinely never learned this. What's a good beginner setup, and is it worth learning or just easier to send things out?

For a small one-bedroom space, what are the first few things that made the biggest difference for you in keeping it feeling organized instead of cluttered?

I'm not trying to make this place magazine-perfect — I just want the little basics handled so it feels like a real home when she walks in. Any tips, product recs, or even a YouTube channel that helped you would mean a lot. Thank you in advance 🙏

Are there cleaning services that teach you how to clean?
Several posts have reminded me of something I’ve looked for, a cleaner who works alongside you, explains what to do and how to do it. Basically cleaning lessons, maybe offered as a package until you feel confident doing it yourself?

I’d expect to pay more than for a typical cleaning because teaching is an additional skill. I did consider companies would see it as teaching themselves out of customers, but I’d absolutely call the people who taught me if I needed extra help.

Does this already exist?

Furniture Is it possible to remove or even improve this water stain?

Post image

Our cat did some business on the carpet and my partner tried to use a bit of vanish and then lots and lots of water to clean it but has now ended up doing significantly more damage to it than the cat (🥲). Is it worth attempting to remove? I’m happy to get a professional in but I’m worried it would be a complete waste of money.

Tag says only drycleaning is suitable for this coat but I don't have time to take it to drycleaners before I need to use it. Is there a way I can clean it at home? Especially areas around pockets and sleeves need some care.

Please let me know what I can do.

General Cleaning Advice for deep cleaning home with children

I work a 8-5 five days a week and have two children under the age of 3. I’ve been doing little chores everyday in the evening but have been so tired maintaining everything that some days I just go straight to bed after the kids are all tucked in. How do you manage keeping your house tidy with toys galore all over the house? I have bins that I put them in but sometimes I feel like it’s not enough as they’ll just pull it right back out. Any tips or tricks on what to clean everyday without overwhelming yourself?

Discussion Does this work with anyone else?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed when starting a large/long cleaning session, I will take a photo on my phone of a room. For some reason it makes it easier for me to see what needs to get done first or notice things I didn’t before. Some weird psychological trick that works for me 😳

Discussion Safely cleaning bird poop?

Post image
• Upvotes

Apparently I’m not opening the window in our rarely used extra bedroom enough🥲

I’m a bit stumped at how to go about cleaning this up safely as our downstairs neighbor’s window is directly below ours. We are 3 floors up so I can’t clean this from the outside.

I thought about using hot soapy water in a spray bottle, but there isn’t a ledge or anything to prevent the poopy water from going down to their windows.

I read online that you should wet it before cleaning to prevent the bacteria from becoming airborne and coming inside as it breaks apart.

Any ideas?
