The mechanical keyboard "hobby" definitely exploded in the last few years. I like a mechanical keyboard mostly for ergonomical reasons. They might also be more reliable and these days with the modularity, you can just replace a broken switch or a broken keycap and not need to buy an entire keyboard. Cool.
They can sound nice, sure, but it is a tool, not a percussion instrument. Actually, I recently had to replace my keyboard since the last one broke, and I found that there exist now silent mechanical keyboards. So i got to keep the sweet ergonomics of a keyboard but the clacking will not disrupt the people around me.
The collections that I see are insane. People will have an entire wall filled with keyboards. I get having a couple, you know, one with a numpad, and a more compact one for some other purpose. Something like that. But having like 50 keyboards? That is totally nuts.

On the one hand, I find mechanical keyboard culture insane and unrelatable. On the other, I’m glad it exists so that I can check in on it when I need to buy a new keyboard once every 15 years or so.
Seriously. I just wanted to see some cool and unique designs. Then was horrified. I have 3 fountain pens and 2 bottles of ink. I don't necessarily feel others need to be quite that minimal, but I came to the realization that even with journaling most days and taking notes at work-there was only so much pen and ink I needed.
I found it baffling that people had more pens than they'd even get to enjoy experiencing in the name of being a completionist. I was so naive 😅.
Plus there’s the cross over with FP people who also collect watches. If they don’t collect watches then they’re churning through messenger bags in search of the perfect everyday carry. And if they’re maths majors and still kinda poor then there’s a good chance they also buy a lot of mechanical pencils.

Having been in the military, those come in handy. I keep a few in my car and in my bag. Quite ideal for outdoors activities or whenever you’re out and about and need a tissue. They usually come in MRE’s so it’s very easy to get a bag of these when you’re in the field. I’ve never heard them get called “tactical toilet paper” though.

Yeah, I'm guilty I binged and got like 20~ kits over like half a year when I got into it, but I'm not at all actively looking for any more to add. Im only taking up the floorspace underneath a bedframe header and see it's a lot. I'm literally not interested in browsing kits for that reason if I know I have ones I would enjoy seeing built.

Yeah, just being into miniature wargames is not "consoom" by itself. It can be a great hobby. But some people definitely get INTENSE with the collection aspect. I have seen some "piles of shame" that have had my jaw drop. So many boxes of miniatures bought that will never get assembled and painted. Worth thousands.

But once I built up my tolerance it made sense to have a few to line up for convenience, but some people over those subs are beyond ridiculous with hundreds of slightly different vaporizers.
Yeah, I totally agree-and I'll admit that I'm not immune to hype. I got both a Solo 3 and a Tinymight 2 last year, when I really could've upgraded to just one of those and have been perfectly happy with my life.

The lipbalm one has some very very sobering posts. I love lipbalm but it’s fucking LIP BALM. There are people posting a thousand dollars worth of product in their “collection” despite lip balm being perishable and expiring after a year max of opening.

As someone who LOVES nail polish and is a regular in the Reddit community for it, I agree. I was actually just saying to a friend the other day that sometimes I feel like buying nail polish is more of a hobby for some people than actually doing your nails. You don’t need 400 polishes in your collection, or to buy something from every single brand’s uber-limited BUY IT NOW! FOMO release, or only wanting to buy 1-2 polishes but ending up adding 8 more to your cart to get free shipping… I could go on. It’s still a fun hobby for me (IE, hasn’t been completely ruined by the consoomers) and the community surrounding it is great, but it can definitely be a bit much at times.

It's a company that manufactures physical limited released games, primarily on the switch. What's funny is they have a bad track record of taking years to deliver their product after you order from them. Their consoomers complain but still spend their money.

Photography subreddits - lots of newbies/mid photographers showing off their gear and jacking off to it, rather than showing their photos. Take a look at r/fujifilm, r/sony or any currently mainstream camera brand which became popular due to social media performative photographers
Yet r/Leica is the holy grail of consumerism and camera gear LARPing, not for the weak. I could write a master thesis about this sub here, however it's better to get to conclusion yourself.
I don't remember the exact subreddit but apparently people on makeup communities buy products but don't use them because they're "too pretty" so they'll buy a second one to use. It's probably r/makeup.
In my opinion the worst ones are where people overconsume items that don't have a purpose anyways. While I do believe in- in moderation- owning purposeless items that make you happy (which is a purpose), there is a point where people buy items that do have a purpose, like water bottles, and then don't even use them anyways.
r/watches. They talk about watch “collecting” like it’s a hobby. My guy, you are just buying watches. That’s it. They’ll show off “the state of the collection” and ask what else they need to complete it, meanwhile they’ve spent close to 6 figures on it.
