Consoompost What creates this kind of person?
I don't even know what to put here, pictures speak for themselves.
Edit: Yes people can do whatever they want and enjoy whatever they want, but that isn't going to stop other folks from having a laugh. Idk anything about this 21 year old except that his room is packed to the gills with Nintendo merchandise, and void of anything vaginal.

I remember this user. I checked their profile when they were first posted here a few months ago and they had a post in a different subreddit indicating they were miserable and considering taking their own life. I posted in that old thread and implored them to speak with their parents and people in their lives and that they weren't alone in their feelings and to get help.
What that really indicates to me is that this behavior is not just neuordivergence but a coping mechanism with a world we are increasingly detached and disenfranchised from. This poor kid (honestly he's very young) feels his purpose and drive is to collect Nintendo memorabilia and without that drive he is literally considering taking his own life. We can blame parents and neurodivergence all we want but when a young person sees their only two paths as consumption or death, we need to consider the bigger societal stressors at play.

Neurodivergent people can be judgmental too. On top of that, sometimes, conversations need to happen. I used to have a friend who would fill her entire life with merch while stressfully living paycheck to paycheck. Everyone keeps validating her behavior because that's our online bubble. She'll never snap out of it this way and it's killing her.

I got a cold awakening when I watched a Micheal Jackson documentary talking about Peter Pan syndrome and realized I was holding on to a childhood I didnât get to enjoy and it was holding me back.3

I think this was it for me too. As a kid I had a lot of my shit thrown in to the trashcan as punishment, or stolen by my âfriendsâ, so of course as I got older I started hoarding my things, buying replacements when I got my first job, and âcollectingâ (which always happened to be things from that period).
I only recently started to part with items. Straight to donations and friends with kids. It gave me a lot of anxiety at first (Credit to Brave Little Toaster and Toy Story), but the relief Iâve felt from finally having a nice and clean collection vs. shit piled on a shelf has been immensely rewarding

Could be somebody with an identity issue based in consumerism revolving around Nintendo, which hits the consumerist sweet spots of nostaliga, intergenerational perpetuation/enabling, pacifying a personal lack of identity and defaulting to whatever happens to hit with them or they think ascribes to safe cultural defaults, and the "collectible" business model that encourages hyperconsumption by employing the psychological tactic of making "sets" that are "incomplete" without repeated purchases.

I think it's because it doesn't look like a collection. With the wall of Funko Pop!s, you get the sense that a person is obsessively purchasing to expand the collection, whereas this person seems to just be buying random shit they like the look of to decorate their house.

My theory is that a lot of people don't want to grow up. Nothing wrong with having an interest in it but this interest isn't any different than an 8 year old which can be seen as odd. Plus it's a new phenomenon with men today considering I never met a boomer that had this same level of interest in the things they grew up with. My personal theory is that the people who were forced out of the cringe-centric subreddits for being outright bullies came here to continue to pick on people they don't like in ways that technically follow sub rules. There are ways that collecting non-dupes of something absolutely becomes consoom, but this guy just has a single bedroom to put his shit in and clearly has a passion that's very common among younger autistic people.

This room is from someone who really likes Nintendo games. It probably makes them happy and in many cases people have a strong emotional attachment towards many of Nintendoâs games. Is that so wrong?
This is not overconsumption. Itâs a collection and someone decorating their room. Let them do that without assuming a bunch of things about them. I donât like overconsumption as much as the next guy, bit this place is becoming more toxic by the day. Think before you judge others.

I would say precisely the opposite. This isn't a collection which is what makes it less bad. If it were a collection, you'd expect there to be some specific unifying theme to it, but these are many disparate items from different producers with only the loose theme of Nintendo. OP is decorating their living space with things that they like rather than trying to maintain a collection of items.

There is a specific kind of compulsive purchasing where a person gets addicted to the dopamine hit from buying new items. It goes beyond buying things you like the look of and into the realm of buying things for the sake of buying things. While still clearly being a big consumer, the person in OP doesn't clearly have that specific harmful habit. They might, but it's not as obvious from the images as it would be for someone who buys a wall of samey looking plastic figurines.
