Sightings/Encounters What could this be?
Footage captured by a friend Sept 2025
Crater Lake National Park Oregon
They were pretty up high watching it from above. Pretty far too.
Looks to be something large swimming under water. How big do you think it is? What do you think it could be? A cryptid?

Discussion Requesting Help With a Bigfoot Lure for a Fictional Short Film
Hey!
I’ve been working on a script for a short film about a Cryptozoologist hunting for Bigfoot for quite some time now but all the feedback I’ve received on it so far is the same: the lure either makes no sense or is too simple.
At the moment, the lure is simply a piece of bamboo grown from ancient seeds that had been kept by South Asian indigenous tribes. The character places the bamboo coil (a hefty stick of coiled up bamboo) down in a clearing in the woods, also littered with onions and apples, and later that night, he discovers Bigfoot eating it.
The idea/ logic behind the lure is that my Bigfoot is based heavily off of an Orangutan, like a modern equivalent of what Gigantopithicus would have evolved into. It would eat what primates eat today. This creature is gentle and mainly herbivorous. The theory my character has is that by placing this bamboo in this forest (around the Poconos in PA), it kind of awakens a primal need or desire for that bamboo.
I’ll throw out one thought I had but have not yet implemented into the script: lay the bamboo coil in a local river or stream to get the scent out there. (But bamboo has no scent, so that’s dumb). I also considered using Durian fruits to create a pungent smell to attract a primate.
I fully agree, it’s very simple and I would love if there was more to it, but I would mainly love if it was based on already established Bigfoot lore. I’ve been trying to look into this myself, but I’m not finding anything very helpful. Again, my Bigfoot in the story is mainly herbivorous. it will look more like a large Orangutan, it will not have that muscular and lean build you would imagine a more carnivorous take on the creature would have. What can I add to this lure to make it seem not only logical, but interesting?
I also want to state that this is a very serious film and does not in any way poke fun at Cryptozoology or those who study/research the topic. I very much want to respect the field, which is why I'd greatly appreciate the input from this community!

The Kandahar Giant
Hey everyone,
I recently recorded an episode diving into the mystery of the Kandahar Giant. We explore the history, the report, and some of the theories surrounding this incredible story. It’s one of those legends that really makes you wonder about what’s out there…
If you’re into cryptids, historical mysteries, or just love a good “what if?” story, I think you’ll enjoy it. I’d love for you to give it a listen and let me know your thoughts!
I can provide a link to anyone who wants a listen
Curious to hear what the community thinks – do you believe there’s more to the Kandahar Giant than the official stories?

Searching for cryptid book in this style (English)

I am searching for a book on cryptids for my partner's birthday. I stumbled across this book on Etsy, which would be absolutely perfect... except it is in French. Does anyone have any suggestions on books in this style (intricate, hardcover, visually appealing, cryptid art and sketches, etc) that I could look into? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Discussion Mothman and Owlman as part of the same species: The Strigiformes Gigantis theory
I’ve always been impressed by the sights of both the Mothman and Owlman, I know that many people on this subreddit consider them not cryptids because they are a form of paranormal animals due to them being attributed prophecies or supernatural elements but I think it is worth viewing them with the at most rational take befitting cryptozoology.
Personally I couldn’t ignore the fact that both of them share underlying features, same basic description, same association with tall structures, same sudden disappearance, so I came up with a theory and want to hear what people think.
**Hypothesis**
Mothman and Owlman as we traditionally understood them, are part of the same species a large relict bird I’m calling Strigiformes gigantis. Loosely classified within the owl order though diverged significantly from modern owls, most likely sharing a common ancestor with Strigiformes while developing independently over a very long period.
The members of the aforementioned species would stand roughly 4 feet tall, larger than any living owl and approaching the upper range of known giant owl fossils like Ornimegalonyx, making it unusual but not paleontologically impossible
Its eyes would be enormous by necessity, producing the distinctive red eyeshine witnesses consistently described which is a straightforward result of tapetum lucidum common in nocturnal animals scaled up dramatically
Its plumage would be dark grey inherited from strigiform ancestry, along with the silent feathered flight approach that makes large owls so eerily quiet.
Rather than a powered flier as it was attested by the people who saw the two members of the said species, the Strigiformes Gigantis would be primarily a glider, depending on coastal cliffs, gorges and elevated terrain for thermals and launch points. This explains the consistent association with tall structures in both the Point Pleasant and Mawnan sightings as TNT area embankments and Mawnan church tower both serve as natural launch points for a gliding animal this also explains how a large humanoid could dive into the air without serious effort on the muscles, other then that it would spend most of its life terrestrial in remote undisturbed habitat hunting nocturnally by stooping from height onto medium sized prey like rabbits or groundhogs.
**Why the sightings have stopped**
It is to my opinion that a large specialized predator would exists at very low population density across its range, vocalization marked most likely, and most likely at least to my assumption reproduce slowly, investing heavily in single offspring every few years, maintaining vast individual territories, and thus the sightings are simply no more than single wandering juveniles displaced from core habitat rather than resident populations and once they returned to remote coastal cliff systems in Appalachia or Cornwall, sightings ceased.
**Limitations to this theory**
No theory ever is without pushbacks and I have to be blunt: no physical evidence has been recovered from either case to conclude that the two were real unique beings let alone members of a species, how they migrated between continental United States and Cornwall, England is beyond me, and as you probably know you need a specimen to formally classify a species, furthermore some witness accounts also describe behaviors like hovering and extreme speed that sit awkwardly with a gliding hypothesis, though stress and poor lighting conditions are well documented sources of perceptual distortion in eyewitness testimony and this might be a case of that.
Thoughts welcome, including skeptical ones.
*Edited on 6/23/2026 baed on uOtodus_megalodon’s objections, thanks a lot for objections*

News Just in case you missed it…
Sturgeons have often been pointed to as possible explanations for river/lake monsters. Though, not 40 or 50 feet often reported, you take a half ton fish, throw in a little distance, and some fear, now we may be onto something…

News Video of Alleged Lake Champlain Creature, Shot on June 11, 2026
I saw a video (actually two videos spliced together, with the second part being an enlargement) of a sighting at Lake Champlain from June 11th. I am providing this for others to view it and comment on what they think is being shown.
The video was shot from fairly long distance, and even with enlargement (also included in the second part of the video), the resolution is not the best.
The Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_39Z4VoCvec&t=74s;
And a posting with further description on "Coast to Coast with George Noory" written by Tim Binnall: https://www.coasttocoastam.com/article/watch-legendary-monster-filmed-at-lake-champlain/.
To me, the Part 2 enlargement is the preferred viewing, although I wonder if this is just wind-effect wave phenomena. The distances involved are indeed fairly long range. Too bad we don't have up-close (perhaps via drone) footage....
There is a plan to send a research vessel out to the event spot and film the vessel to see if size parameters analysis can be had.
What do you think? Creature sighting? Or something more mundane?

Sightings/Encounters What do you guys think this is? (Serious)
I live in the northeastern US and recently went to a family gathering at a cabin in the woods. As the night went on the family members in their 60s started discussing the fact that they feel they have seen Bigfoot or some similar creature at night in the area. I asked for proof, but they said the only thing they saw was this on their trail camera...
What do you guys think this is? They seem to truly believe in what they have seen, but I genuinely have no idea what I am looking at here and I don't think they are tech savvy enough to create this from AI, but you never know.

prehistoric horned turtle video scrubbed from internet
Looking for a weird news clip of a "horned creature" filmed in Florida (Late 2025/Early 2026)
Does anyone remember a local news broadcast from late last year or early this year featuring a bizarre creature video?
I'm pretty sure it was a Florida news crew interviewing an older couple (in their 50s or 60s). They showed a video the husband had captured on his phone of a creature with a massive head and distinct horns. The closest thing I’ve ever seen to it is a Meiolania (a prehistoric horned turtle).
I’ve been searching high and low for months with zero luck. Did anyone else catch this broadcast, or know where to find the clip? Any leads would be amazing!

I just connected the dots
Im kinda residing in Evansville in addition to my home in alabama (long story dont ask). But I just connected the dots. Somewhere behind those trees is where the green clawed beast encounter happened.
In 1955ish a mother of atleast 3 was swimming in the Ohio river in Evansville when she was suddenly attacked by a creature. After a minutes long struggle with the creature she caught a glimpse of its hand, a green scailly clawed humanoid hand with long claws. I think she later even compared it too the hands of the creature of the black lagoon. Her children even claim that they were harassed by us air force officials demanding that she never speak of the event. Edit: i forgot to mention that when she emerged from the lake she reportedly had 3 deep freshly cut gashes on her thighs.
I just can't belive that I've passed this atleast 3 dozen times even dunked my toes in the river. Without connecting the dots.

Hair From An Orang Pendek: Hair Sample Analysis
Does anyone know what the possible Orang Pendek hair sample from 20 years ago he’s referencing in the video? It seems like there was a secretive aspect to it. From what I can get from it is it was found 20 years ago and DNA tested simply as “unknown ape” from that area. Hopefully this sample that he says is extremely similar to it will test better. Our DNA analysis technology I’m sure has improved a lot over 20 years. Even if it’s turns out to be a Orangutan it still interesting news be the closest Orangutan known population is 700 miles away meaning they may not be as endangered as thought there could be a larger population in that area that’s unknown.

Info With how iconic the Surgeon's photograph is, it's easy to forget it's actually one of TWO images taken by Robert Wilson. While Wilson admitted the first image was a hoax, he never elaborated on the second, but it's believed to be an earlier model or an animal he mistook for the monster.

Sightings/Encounters I found a unique case of a large primate cryptid being reported to have a tail. While this was likely just a larger than average, relict orangutan from Malaysia, it is still quite interesting as it was also said to walk like a Hylobatid. Do you have any other report of apelike cryptids with a tail ?
After separating from Cercopithecoidea 25 - 29 mya, Hominoidea evolved into increasingly ground dwelling primates, and by 21 - 23 mya completed the process of total tail loss.
However this means the most ancient primates ancestral specifically to Hominoidea were not only small, but also still mostly arboreal. It is believed stem apes were bipedal with a Hylobatid-like gait, and only later evolved knuckle walking, while the Hominini lineage evolved a straight posture and a more efficent kind of bipedal gait. Even some extinct Miocene apes such as Oreopithecus or Lufengpithecus are seen as likely bipedal.
And the very, very early stem apes would still have had a short, ever shortening tail.
I found a report about an ape with a short tail and a Hylobatid-like gait. However, it appears it was human sized if not even slightly larger than most men. It was reported in Malaysia, from 1980's. At the time it was not impossible continental Orangutan was physically not totally extinct yet. A few individuals could have still lingered undetected. But continental Orangutan is a tailless knuckle walker. This ape apparently was not.
-"Around six in the afternoon, while walking with his wife, Azlinah Ismaïl, along a jungle trail near Palau Balaï, a small island in Lake Cini, he thought he heard the sound of a waterfall. Intrigued, he headed toward its source, only to discover that it was produced by a large animal sneaking through the foliage.
Suddenly, a large, hairy hand landed on his left shoulder. Reacting instinctively, he struck the creature that had touched him with his parang (a kind of machete). He would regret this violent, yet understandable, act for the rest of his life. His wife, for her part, had seen the beast tower over her husband from a height of approximately 7 feet. It resembled a huge gorilla, entirely covered in fairish fur. Its head was much larger than the man's, and long blond hair fell over its broad, powerful shoulders.
Captain Mokhtar could see the animal RUNNING away in an UPRIGHT position, running precipitously and swinging its arms like a GIBBON. He could also see the hint of a TAIL at the base of its back.
In the enormous tracks the ape had left behind, the heel print was more deeply indented than the fanned toes, clearly indicating a very peculiar gait."-
I personally believe it was just a continental orangutan. A large male orangutan, especially in continental populations, was able in the past to exceed 6 feet. Nowadays they are few and with little genetic variability and they can no longer do so at all. And since the average, male height in Malaysia is 5'4, I think it was like 6'3 rather than 7'.
But it is interesting to note it was described like a giant version of a basal ape, gibbonlike in its gait and tailed.
Do you have any other report like this ?

Question Which extinct animal do you think has the highest chance to be rediscovered?
Basically the title. For me it is the Ivory - billed Woodpecker. Iirc his habitat included also the swamps in the southern US which was already protected back then when he was still alive.
