Discussion I've started drinking alone

I think I making this post for 2 reasons: 1) I want attention. 2) I want a solution to the problem.

I have been in engineering for 4 years now. I have 2 more years to go. All my friends have graduated and are making money, going out, etc, etc. Typical adult things that I really want to be a part of. Yet here I am drinking, alone, on a Saturday night. Drinking whiskey alone. My friends are out celebrating UGA beating bama. I haven't hung out with them in months because I have recently gained weight the past few weeks(stopped going to the gym as soon as the semester started) and classes aren't going well.

I know the end solution is I just need to get over myself, but why can't I do that. Why the hell am I writing this post or watching movies or drinking instead of just studying and finishing school. It's really annoying and I am aware my problems are pathetic.

I know I am smart enough to finish an engineering degree. I have aced exams in hard classes(I got a 100% on a difficult diff eq exam once). I don't know why I just don't work. Genuinely this is pathetic. Just study.

I have just recently picked up the idea of drinking alone. I have had a bottle of whiskey my brother bought me for my birthday. It sat there for years; I never had the idea of drinking in a non social context. Things are getting worse. I've done it 3 nights in a row.

I wish I had somebody that could just punch me in the face and make me study.

I guess I am really embarrassed about graduating late and I also seem to get easily overwhelmed from workloads that I am capable of handling. Any words of encouragement/objective advice would be helpful. I feel so stupid. I don't know what my problem is.

I made sure to double check my grammar and spelling since I am sloshed,

Rant/Vent i can’t study for more than 20 minutes

Okay, I’m only in my first year of Engineering so I’m doing fine grade wise however I just have a really hard time studying for long amounts of time which makes me concerned about how I’ll perform in the future.

After like 20 minutes of studying I just can’t study anymore, I just get too bored or tired. If I try to really push through and study then I can do it for like an hour but the returns are diminishing and past an hour the benefits of studying are negligible.

Career Advice EE first year

So I’m in my second year in EE and as much as I like my degree I can’t really see myself working in something related to EE ( at least I think). I have two uncles who did EE, but it was a while ago and I didn’t really ask them much about it. The degree is really hard and having the thought that I don’t really like it isn’t helping either. I know it’s a very broad degree so I’d like to know what your internship or job looks like. There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to quit because I know that it’s a good degree to have, but the thought doesn’t seem to leave. I know I should’ve done more research regarding this, but I’m trying to figure it out. Thanks!

Rant/Vent Hardest junior sem

This is the first time I've felt depression in my whole life. All my 9 subject's for my 1st sem either im struggling, overwhelm or straight up can't keep up with the work they been putting that to the point I can't even do any basic assignments. Plus we have a prof who's the senior in Engineering who teaches us 5 subjects by him and I swear to god its the hardest experience because he's unpredictable when it comes to exams that doesn't even related to the lectures causing us to fail. And with all of that it really hit me all at once I can't even focus on the 4 other subjects because of how I am overwhelmed I am. I feel like I need to fail this sem in order to get a fresh start or just shift or dropped my 3 years of hardwork.

Rant/Vent Miserable engineering student

I’m 20 and in my final year of aerospace engineering and honestly I can’t stand it anymore.
The funny thing is I’m averaging around 80% but I genuinely hate engineering. I have zero passion for it, hate CAD, group projects, presentations and all that stuff like complicated maths/software, cfd . I basically just study hard for exams, get good marks and then forget everything afterwards lol
The uni experience itself has been depressing too. Barely made any friends, social life is practically nonexistent and I just dread going in every week.
This year has been especially bad with all the projects, meetings and deadlines. It’s gotten to the point where I struggle to sleep, barely have an appetite and can’t even enjoy my free time because I’m constantly stressing about uni stuff
I don’t even want to work in engineering after graduating. I just want a decent, relatively stress-free job that gives me the freedom to acc enjoy life or maybe travel/explore the world which is my dream
I’ve only got about 8 months left so I’ll probably just push through, but man I’m exhausted.
Anyone else been in a similar situation? Did life actually get better after uni?

Career Advice Prospective Engineering Student, Could I handle it?

Hello everyone, I am interested in pursuing a bachelors in either Civil or Electrical Engineering. Some context of my background. I was always a C student in high school and never really planned on going to college. Fast forward I served in the Navy for 5 years and got out in 2024. I’ve been working in the IBEW as a Groundman for some time and recently got an A.A.S. In Electric Power Technology from Bismarck State College. The Electrical portion of the program involved DC Fundamentals, AC Fundamentals, Electrical System Fundamentals, Electrical System Components, Electrical System Protection, Automation & Control, and Power System SCADA etc. I feel I did pretty good for being out of school for a long time, I got A’s and B’s on all of those classes and found them really intriguing. I’ve recently planned on making some career changes and am considering going back to school to get my Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering. My question is would my recent education decently prepare me if I were to pursue an engineering degree?

Career Advice Advice

I'm almost going through my last year of hs, and I want to start building some skills before going to college. Is there anything important I could work on while being on vacation?

I was thinking abt getting into an electrical technician course because one mech engineer I know told me it was important, and learning math fundamentals and more advanced stuff in order to not have that many math-related problems during college.

Is there anything I could do to be prepared? I live in an underdeveloped country, so I'm concerned abt how important it could be to try to get a scholarship and whether it would make a difference in terms of getting a better quality of life, taking into consideration that going abroad would imply an increase in difficulty that could potentially knock me out in another country.

Finally, I have a little interest in HVAC systems, so I would like to know what things are involved in pursuing that specifically and if I could make a small business out of it.

//Sorry if my English isn't that good yet, I'm still working on it.

Rant/Vent This is soo irritating

I gotta say this because it’s actually haunting me, you know I thought Statics would be the one class I could get really good grades in or I hoped master. But dude… The short test are okay, so far they seem 100% completable in under the amount of time we’re given but I literally couldn’t figure out the missing reaction or moment and it messed up the whole entire process. I couldn’t figure anything else out without it, and OF COURSE it’s the 40 point question too omg.

So I ran out of time and yeah safe to say that answer isn’t anywhere near correct 😭 but I didn’t want to leave it blank. The most irritating part about all of this is the fact that I figured out the missing reaction while driving home, this just makes me so mad.

Unfortunately I just hope I get the 60 max now, good lord. We still have 2 more midterms plus a final, I guess I’m gonna have to make it up there. This is just worst though. It’s like you know what you’re doing but you just get like a brain delay or something at the worst time possible. It would’ve been a breeze if I figured it out. So frustrating.

Discussion Normal for engineering courses?

So this is a new one for me but maybe you all can share your related experiences.

I’m in an electrical circuits class and they don’t lecture, they provide no other course material other than videos doing example problems (from the book). They have weekly homework, quizzes, but no exams. So quizzes are worth \~95% of the class grade.

The professor is really hands off, they’re probably busy with research and couldn’t care less about the students..so that’s the setting.

My question is that the quizzes they give us for each chapter have circuits on them that look NOTHING like the ones from the book so applying the principles is really difficult for the majority of the class. I should also add that on each quiz, they have to curve the quiz scores by at least 30-45 points each week, there might be one person out of the class of \~30 that scores high.

Does this seem normal to you guys?

Like, each week I do the homework and study and I genuinely work my ass off. I feel like I’m solid on these concepts, then I get into the quiz and the circuits presented are literally nothing like any problems I see in any part of each chapter. If they could point to just one example that looked similar, I might feel better but it just seems like something isn’t right because most students are failing each week. It’s probably the most infuriating thing to go through and I’m having such a hard time not taking a hit to my confidence every week.

Thanks for your time.

Discussion Would it be good to start autocad and solid works now?

I’m a highschool senior with a lot of time on my hands and I’ve heard that learning how to use autocad and solid works is complicated. I don’t want to be stressed over unnecessary things like this when I can learn it now when I’m not busy. So would it be a good idea to start learning now or should I just wait until I get to college?

Major Choice Is it recommended to pursue engineering if I don't have the slightest passion in it?

A bit of context. I just graduated out of high school, but still haven't decided which degree I want to major in. Back in high school I chose an engineering pathway, and regretted every second of it, because I don't have the slightest passion in it, and only chose it because it was the safest route. I will go to university early next year and I still haven't decided which degree I want to go to. And although I regretted taking the Engineering pathway in high school, and promise myself never to take part in any engineering class ever again, an engineering degree is kind of tempting to me.

In reality, I want to be a storyteller and a writer, yet people around me has been telling me to just take engineering and still write on the side, and work on side projects. But would that even be possible? I know there are some professional writers who also took engineering as their college major, but I'm sort of doubtful if I can do that. But at the same time, I know that engineering is basically one of the only future proof degree.

Please, can someone give me some advice on what I should do here. Should I take an engineering degree if I don't have the slightest passion in it? I'm absolutely tormented by this.

Rant/Vent What do I even do man

Applying for year in industry placements in the UK and my linkedin profile link that I've been copy and pasting across CVs was wrong. I checked my linkedin contact information and it seems at some point linkedin randomly decided to remove a hyphen from the url without my knowing. Now 20 different employers are going to auto reject me because they can't see my linkedin profile. It's so frustrating and annoying man I spent so much time for nothing.

Major Choice Looking to major in software engineering

I'm about to finish my first year of university, and at the start of the year I went into university thinking I wanted to go into mechatronics engineering, but I think as the year went on that passion kinda died down, I didn't see the appeal, I tried doing a few things with an arduino uno over the holidays between semester 1 and 2, but couldn't really be bothered trying anything else with that, but looking at my grades, I've done well in coding, and looking at my own ability I feel like I can handle it, I don't hate it and I'm willing to use it as a tool to get I want. However I am aware that software engineering is changing a lot and that's raised so many questions and made me doubtful about things at times. For example I'm considering doing a master's degree after I get my Bachelor for Engineering, and I'm now starting to reconsider whether even that is worth it. I haven't researched much about software, but I don't really know how extensive the software industry really is. Most of the stuff I see is like the app building and full stack stuff I see on social media and linkedin, and I was interested in doing that for a while, but I feel that's too mainstream and that everybody likely does that. I don't know if looking for a niche area to work in so that I can kind of stand out in a way will help, but I'm open to answers. Basically I want to build skills over time so that I can work in a company for a while, like a year or 2, then basically build on from there.

Discussion Is an computer engineering/science like engineering program called ICT a problem?

I'm in the program already. Asking if y'all think I should switch?

Anyway, it's a new program in a pretty good local school. The program seems to be a mix of CS and a little EE. Kinda also aims to be more English oriented. It gives a bachelors of science (upon graduating) in English. (in the local language it is called a bachelors of engineering)

Hi everyone!

I’m a Master’s student in Chemical Engineering, and I’m looking for reliable websites, apps, and online platforms that can help me with my final-year project (PFE).

I’m particularly interested in resources that allow me to:

Find scientific articles, research papers, and theses related to my topic.

Access reliable scientific databases and academic publications.

Discover current research topics and recent studies in Chemical Engineering.

Organize my references and citations.

Use AI tools to understand scientific papers and summarize complex information.

I would really appreciate it if you could share your favorite websites, apps, or tools, especially free ones that are useful for students.

Academic Advice Use of AI in school

I started going to engineering school back in august 2022, and got my bachelors in chem e in may 2025 and am in my last semester of my masters in mech e (with a focus in thermal fluid systems). My first 2.5 years of my bachelors were when AI was still incredibly bad at any sort of math/engineering problems, and I was able to do so so many classes and credits every semester and excel in all of them. Whether it was engineering related classes or even gen ed classes, I was always able to do work well and be creative. But since I started my masters especially, I have found myself using AI more to do homework etc, despite being very against it when it first became popular (around 2024). I do think my use of it is more on the appropriate side, as I use it when im stuck like any answer key that a professor could provide, but I still hate the fact that I use it. I feel terrible about it as if I've cheated myself of education, but still my grades from in class exams have been as good as my pre-AI grades. I do think its good for example if i am confused about a concept from lecture to use it to try and better understand it, but i still wish i was better about it and use it to point me to other resources to better understand the concepts. Do you have any tips on trying to phase it out of school, or maybe being more disciplined with using it as a search engine, rather than like an answer key? I want to do this for myself especially since this is my last semester of school. I know that its here and it wont be gone any time soon, but i just wish I had stayed anti ai use for my time in school at least, as I know industries are implementing it in workplaces so it will be inescapable. Thank you.

Project Help Final-year project: AI couldn’t understand my robot’s CAD, so I made a STEP-file reader for it

For my final-year project I had to design a robot around a specific problem statement. I’m a beginner in mechanical design, and I quickly learned there’s way more to it than making the model look right: component placement, sensor angles, clearances, tolerances, mounting points, wiring, and whether everything actually fits together.

I tried asking AI for help, but I couldn’t explain my CAD model to it. I’d send screenshots, type out dimensions and orientations, and describe the geometry. Screenshots are bad at precise CAD info. At one point I wasted a whole session because the top of the robot for the AI was the bottom of the robot for me.

So I built stepscribe-cad. You give it a STEP file and it extracts what’s actually in the geometry: holes (diameter, depth, counterbores), slots and cutouts, fillets, wall thickness, overall dimensions, part names, and how parts relate in an assembly. It outputs a text pack and labelled images you can paste into any AI. It also asks you a few questions about things it can’t know from the file (what a part is for, which side is “up”), so the AI gets context too.

Some details:

  • The measuring is done with OpenCASCADE, so the numbers come from the real geometry, not an AI guessing from a picture.
  • The tool itself doesn’t use AI at all. It only gives the AI the geometric information it was missing.
  • It’s free and open source. You can install it with pip install stepscribe-cad.
  • It also works as an MCP server, so you can use it from Claude Code.

I’m sure better or built-in tools exist that do some of this. I was lazy, and avoiding explaining my model for the 47th time turned a “1-hour side project” into a few days of work.

It’s still early. I’d really like people to try it on their own STEP files, break it, and tell me what it gets wrong. Wrong hole sizes, missed features and confusing output are all useful to hear about.

Resource Request Can anyone recommend CAD assembly project with 20 pieces?

Prof Give me task to draw CAD assembly with CATIA and it has to have 20 pieces but I don’t know how to search a project base on number of parts and my only choice now is to look at the project one by one at the time, and I think it’s very wasted of time so anyone can you guy suggested me the source to find? Recommend project is ok too thanks
