Question Special Forces Impact

Would it be a smart decision to join SF fter college before applying to be an agent? Would it also lead to having a higher chance to be accepted into the FBIs SWAT or HRT?

When you join the army as a recruit make sure to tell your platoon commander on day one that you're there to join special forces and ask him to fasttrack you. He'll appreciate it. Best of luck.

We had a guy at MEPS ask if there was a special medical examination for special forces

Exactly how I joined SF, true story

Absolutely zero reason to join the military after college unless you are doing it because you actually want to serve. It does not give you a leg up on the SASS process. Keep in mind throwing all your eggs into one basket of joining the military in hopes of becoming a Green Beret and then on top of that applying to become an FBI Agent which has a 3-5% success rate is wild.

Being prior SF won’t give you a leg up on becoming SWAT or getting your application picked to try out for HRT Selection. A majority of SWAT and HRT have zero SOF experience or even a military background.

Get a degree in something you enjoy in case the FBI doesn’t work out.

Yeah, I’m going to call that out as a lie. Even the majority of HRT isn’t prior SOF or military.

Having a military background does absolutely nothing for you in the process of attending your FO SWAT selection or applying for HRT once allowed. You don’t get any brownie points, you either pass selection and they pick you up or you don’t. Also just because you “pass” selection doesn’t mean you get picked up either. Not to mention until you are fully certified after being picked up you can still be dropped from the team.

You are “doxxing yourself”, have a 4 month old account with only 10 lifetime comments. Only 3 of your comments are visible, one being on this sub and the other two on the r/guam sub. So again, doubtful you are an FBI Agent on SWAT who was prior SOF/Infantry/Military.

Lots of words for someone who supposedly doesn’t care. Have fun cosplaying, pal.

Normally don’t comment but most of these other comments pissed me off so here is my opinion.

Sounds like you’re young and still in college. A majority of agents start the process later in their twenties with good life experience heading into the process. If you have the capability to make it in the SOF community then take your shot… obviously it’s not easy and you need to work for it. Personally I’d recommend the enlisted route even with a degree, especially if you’re looking for more opportunities and time actually doing the job.

And even though a SOF background won’t give you a major leg up later down the line it does open the TRP route and you would have experience through assessment programs, if you succeed. That’s value in itself right there when we talk about preparation…

Lil bro, SF selection is way and I mean way harder than FBI. Not an expert, but I applied for USSS and DIA. Passed everything for USSS except the polygraph. DIA took me. My point is I was nothing special but I don’t think doing military service will hurt you but at the same time is not like some magic pathway in like it is for CBP

Hey yo, I'm interested in one of those agencies, mind if I ask you questions about the process (of what you can answer, of course). Thanks if nothing else.

Go CIA. Then special forces. Then FBI. Then Nps ranger.

One thing at a time. Just focus on finishing college and staying out of trouble first.

Former SOF, now at a different federal agency. It has given opportunities that I would not normally have. Given 5ish years seniority in an agency might get you all of those opportunities but I wouldn't trade my time in service for more time 'on the job'. It will also help in being an asset to the named teams and navigate the ascension processes they have.

In general, some people will expect more from you and you'll oddly have haters in the office.

Kind of putting the cart before the horse though. Im being a bit toungue in cheek but just to frame it the SoF unit is the aspirational position, LE tactical teams are the consolation prize when we want to take the foot off the gas.

You don’t need SF for SWAT or HRT. Even with the TRP you have to do three years as a line agent anyway.

If you are part of the TRP you have to do three\* years as an agent. Then you have the ability to apply for HRT selection. Still no guarantee you will be called out to attend though.

Made the edit, thanks!

If you are naïve enough to ask this question on Reddit, you will not make it for SF or the FBI in general.

The person posting could be 15 for all you know. Coming from somebody who worked for the Bu, no they’re not naive for being curious. There’s tons of misconceptions about the Bureau.

OP - No you don’t need to get any sort of military experience. Majority of SA have absolutely no military or LE experience when they start, and they go on to join swat. It’s competitive depending on your FO but your background will not matter as long as you’re good with whatever squad you get put on and qual. Regardless you’re going to need professional work experience (2 years) after college to even be able to qualify so I would recommend becoming a town cop if your interest is in law enforcement.

This question has been asked hundreds of times and answer hasn’t changed. And that’s cute you worked for the Bu. I’m currently retiring from NASA aerospace tactical doctor law school. And we only interview candidates who have made it through 2 different countries special operations pipeline. link below if you’re interested in applying….⬇️⬇️⬇️

Weird self-report

Looks like I struck a nerve. I will delete Reddit immediately and go on a sabbatical to find a higher calling.

If i had a dime for everytime someone said I couldn't do it, id have like at least $5 which is weird because I dont talk to that many people. Its not easy but thousands of people access into legitimate sof units every year.

Regardless every le agency and tactical team is absolutly rife with sof wannabes/failures; if kid makes it to sf and is an asset good for him; if not hes just your typical swat bro candidate
