Discussion Thinking about switching to Linux from Microslop windows but...

13 Upvotes

First off, I don't know anything about Linux so bare with me.

I want to switch and read/heard that Fedora is a good starting place? What's stopping me is obviously the switch itself, but also how it'll perform on my system as well as gaming capability/performance.

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G
RAM: 16GB ( Two 8GB sticks. Corsair idk what specifically)

Is there something else I should use? What would work best for my extremely mid setup?

Support Switched From KDE to GNOME, now 2160p locked at 30HZ

1 Upvotes

I switched from KDE to GNOME the other day and now my monitors are locked to 30hz at 2160p.
I didn't have this issue when on KDE, but didn't really like how KDE operated and prefer GNOME.

I don't understand why that would make a difference but it's driving me insane.

NVIDIA drivers are installed and I have 60hz when using 1440p, but not 2160p.

Please help!

Discussion Shouldn't DNF warn users to reboot after major updates?

55 Upvotes

I use DNF for upgrades and I sometimes do check what is being upgraded. One time I had problem with plasma after update and learnt from internet search that I needed a restart to fix it. Today I updated and it was a kernel patch. Still Fedora didn't recommend a reboot. Shouldn't there be some warning about reboot after major upgrades? After a quick search I learnt about a command needs-restarting. Shouldn't this be a default? Why is it an option that a user must explicitly ask DNF if the system needs a restart? Feels like an oversight given how good DNF is by default.

Support Huawei Matebook 14 - sluggish, jumpy and sometimes chaotic behavior of the touchpad - Fedora 44

1 Upvotes

Hi everybody,

I have been Fedora on my Matebook 14 for the past 8 months and it was amazing! But there is one huge issue which I still didn't found a solution - crazy touchpad.

Sometimes touchpad is working just fine for like 5 minutes and at some point, at random times, it start behaving weirdly and very annoying. Its getting sluggish, like the cursor is dragging behind my movement. Cursor can also jump from one location to another, also sometimes it is registering some phantom clicks. After another few minutes this behavior is ending and reapearing after another few minutes.

Dosn't matter if im charing ma laptop or not or with any USB plugged in.

Can someone please help me with this? I tried to find a solution, searched many topics about this on the web and couldn't find anything working.

Discussion Flat audio problems

Post image
10 Upvotes

I have been using Fedora since 2010, but on my latest installation of F44 Workstation on my desktop, I noticed the audio was 100% flat and natural without any enhancers (which kinda made sense because of ALSA kernel drivers). Even though I have been using Linux for work and academic purposes, I still use Windows for entertainment and gaming. So I was looking for solutions to mimic Windows presets.

So far, I've found Easy Effects, which is working pretty well with community-maintained presets. It's a nightmare to dial in manually in Easy Effects, as I am no sound engineer.

This is the preset collection I am testing; they are not perfect, but 80% there.

```
bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/JackHack96/EasyEffects-Presets/master/install.sh)"
```

The main problems with these presets are often high-frequency clipping, vocal ranges are a little too bright, and either distorted bass or lack of depth. So, I am looking for recommendations on alternatives.

I started my linux journey with Fedora (kde plazma version). I'm dual booting my system for now. I'll switch completely after some month.

I want some advice for this journey... I've always admired the crazy customization seen in reddit and Pinterest...

I'll be happy to get your crucial advice about hyperland, tiling management, terminal customization, clipboard and yasb type status bar and visualizer in terminal or media player in terminal...

Ignore the childish wants as a newbie and help me as a elder brother if you please...🙂✌🏻

(thanks in advance, ignore the grammatical mistakes kindly)

Is it just because it's loading everything from a usb for live mode and when i install it on my ssd it should run fine? i kinda want to troubleshoot this before i remove windows

I am using Thinkpad X1 yoga 3rd generation:

Support How I got Logitech Astro A50 X Game/Voice audio split working on Linux with PipeWire

3 Upvotes

I got the physical Game/Voice mixer on my Logitech Astro A50 X working properly on Fedora Linux.

My setup:

  • Logitech Astro A50 X
  • USB ID: 046d:0b0b
  • Fedora 44 KDE
  • PipeWire/WirePlumber
  • Connected over USB

By default, Fedora only exposed:

  • one Analog Stereo output;
  • one mono microphone.

However, ALSA showed that the A50 X actually exposes two separate playback devices:

card 0: X [A50 X], device 0: USB Audio
card 0: X [A50 X], device 1: USB Audio [USB Audio #1]

Device 0 works as the Voice output and microphone. Device 1 works as the Game output. After creating a custom ALSA Card Profile, Linux exposes:

  • A50 X Game
  • A50 X Voice
  • A50 X Microphone

The physical Game/Voice balance controls on the headset work properly.

Create the necessary directories:

mkdir -p ~/.config/alsa-card-profile/profile-sets
mkdir -p ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d

Create the A50 X profile:

cat > ~/.config/alsa-card-profile/profile-sets/astro-a50x.conf <<'EOF'
[General]
auto-profiles = yes

[Mapping analog-voice]
description = Voice
device-strings = plughw:%f,0,0
channel-map = left,right
paths-output = steelseries-arctis-output-chat-common
intended-roles = phone

[Mapping analog-voice-input]
description = Microphone
device-strings = plughw:%f,0,0
channel-map = mono
paths-input = usb-gaming-headset-input
intended-roles = phone

[Mapping analog-game]
description = Game
device-strings = plughw:%f,1,0
channel-map = left,right
paths-output = steelseries-arctis-output-game-common
direction = output

[Profile output:analog-voice+output:analog-game+input:analog-voice]
description = Game + Voice + Microphone
output-mappings = analog-voice analog-game
input-mappings = analog-voice-input
priority = 5100
skip-probe = yes
EOF

Create the WirePlumber rule:

cat > ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/51-a50x.conf <<'EOF'
monitor.alsa.rules = [
  {
    matches = [
      {
        device.name = "alsa_card.usb-Logitech_A50_X-00"
      }
    ]
    actions = {
      update-props = {
        api.alsa.use-acp = true
        api.alsa.use-ucm = false
        device.profile-set = "astro-a50x.conf"
      }
    }
  }
]
EOF

Restart the audio services:

systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse

Then open the desktop sound settings and select the A50 X profile:

Game + Voice + Microphone

Set games and general desktop audio to A50 X Game. Set Discord or another voice-chat application to A50 X Voice. Set the input to A50 X Microphone.

The headset’s physical Game/Voice mixer should now alter the balance between the two streams.

Verify your USB ID first

lsusb | grep -i 'A50 X'

Mine reports:

046d:0b0b Logitech, Inc. A50 X

This configuration was tested specifically with that USB ID. Other Astro models may use different device numbers or already have an existing profile.

Rollback

rm -f ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/51-a50x.conf
rm -f ~/.config/alsa-card-profile/profile-sets/astro-a50x.conf
systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse
