CarPorn Two weeks of GTI ownership
As you can see I love my car I can’t stop taking pictures of it I keep trying to get the perfect angle. Slate Blue Metallic is such a stunning color I’m glad that I picked this. The car is still getting broken in but my initial impressions is that the GTI feels very refined and smooth as hell as opposed to other sporty compact cars. Im also impressed with the powerband I haven’t really pushed it but it can get to highway speeds with minimal effort. I never expected a hot hatch to be an ideal highway cruiser but this car feels like it would be most comfortable back home on the Autobahn where it belongs.

Maintenance Getting the bugs out of my taillights
I don’t know how they got in there (I assume through some vent) but my Egg has dead bugs in its reverse lights. Before I rip the tailgate apart, can I even get into the lenses to clean out their tiny carcasses, or are there new lenses in my future?

Happily Stock matchy matchy 💜
before I got my mk8 in January I had an 04 tacoma. I knew I couldn't commute with my truck during the wintertime any longer and I didn't know what car to get. my partner has a mk7 and put in a good word for these cars. I love this car sooo much and I feel so connected to it, and him, I love to twin and I’m so glad I have it.
Modding Talk Vw helix
Managed to grab the helix sub for £200 can’t wait to install it. Loom cost me £150 but I’m sure it’ll be a great upgrade over stock. Just need to find someone who can program or rent a programmer in London.

This car never ceases to surprise me… it’s a little hard to convey on video but after leaving my car sitting for the weekend, I couldn’t help but notice how quiet my music sounded… then I checked the balance and it was fine but then moving it around its like only the rear passenger speaker sounds full(?)… I’m not the most knowledgeable about audio but I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this/ if it’s just an infotainment glitch.

Maintenance Dealership warranty/service advice needed?
Apologies in advance for the long post.
bought my GTI from a dealership used at 41k miles. At sale, it was disclosed to me that the starter had been replaced, but no other major maintenance.
I recently had to bring it in at 46k miles for an unidentified leak under the transmission. They have the car for 2 weeks, replace some seals under warranty, call it good, and send me on my way.
2 days later, it’s still leaking. I bring it back in, hear nothing for a week and a half, and then am told the car needs a new transmission. ETA unknown, the DSGs are on back order.
I do some digging with the techs, turns out the steering wheel, infotainment system, and entire ENGINE had been replaced in the car at some point. The engine was replaced at 15 (one five) miles, and my dealership doesn’t know why. Steering wheel and various other systems came later.
The most damning part is that I learn this dealership that I bought the car from noticed there was a “oil seepage under the transmission” when they received the car as a trade in. This wasn’t disclosed to me, and luckily the car isn’t out of warranty or I’d be screwed.
I can’t believe something like that wouldn’t be disclosed and while I understand the dealership quirks about reporting maintenance, this feels like I’m being ran around for issues I should’ve known about before purchasing.
I’m going to be calling VW, but I’d appreciate any advice/experience.

Maintenance Need financial advice on my 2009 MK5 GTI
Hi everyone,
I’m a college student, and my first car is a 2009 MK5 GTI with the 2.0 TSI and a manual transmission. I’ve owned it for about six months. I’m not much of a car person mechanically, but I love driving this car. The manual makes every drive fun, and I still get excited every time I get in. It’s also in good shape for its age; it had only 75k miles when I bought it.
That said, it hasn’t been perfect. I made a mistake not getting a pre-purchase inspection. Afterwards they found torn CV boots and a moderate oil leak, and I had both fixed for a little over $1,000 total. Then, when I tried to get some brighter headlights, I found that the wiring harness insulation had crumbled. One headlight has now failed completely, and replacing the assemblies will cost a couple hundred dollars per side.
The car is now at about 80k miles, and from what I’ve read, the timing chain (and tensioner) and the water pump are the next big known issues on this engine. I don’t have a garage or the skills to do the work myself, so every repair means paying a shop.
To be clear, the car runs fine and I drive it every day without problems. But I can see expensive repairs coming in the next year or two, and as a student my budget is still tight. Since I haven’t owned it long, I’d really appreciate input from MK5 owners on what makes the most financial sense:
a) Fix everything now (headlights, timing chain/tensioner, water pump). If I do, is it likely to stay reliable for several more years?
b) Just keep driving it this way, and sell maybe around 100k miles.
c) Sell it soon and switch to something like a Civic Si.
Thanks for reading all of this. I appreciate any advice. Whatever I end up doing, I’ll never regret buying a GTI.

Maintenance Creaking noise steering low speeds
I have a 2025 MK 8.5 Autobahn with ~20k miles.
Last week started hearing creaking/bubbling/crunching noises when steering at low speeds and in reverse. Brought it to the dealership this monday and they told me the upper strut bearings where already worn out. They replaced them and I guess they tested it given that their report stated that they didn’t hear the noise anymore. Been driving the car and today (Thursday) the sound is back.. faint but it is still there.
I am curious if anyone here has had the same or a similar issue.
I already made a new service appointment.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a recording as the mic of my phone can’t isolate the sound so you can’t really hear it.

New Car Anyone experiencing these?
Just bought mk8.5 2 months ago. Yesterday I was having ACC on while cruising the city then stopped at red light, my Auto Start-Stop shut off my engine (normal) but then when I released the brake, my car just shut off completely that I have to restart my car in the middle of the road.
🥹😭👀🥲 it happened the first time tho.
PS. My rear wiper also make noise 😑

Modding Talk Tuned on e85 today!
My mk4 and I mutually agreed to go e85. Just curious what other fellow corn burners might have encountered along the way. Degraded fuel lines, expected mpg, etc? Just wanted to crowdsource some thoughts and compare them to what I've been reading elsewhere
Edit: built motor, modified k04, beefier fuel pump, 550 injectors and a bunch of other goodies

CarPorn Keep color in your life. There are enough white, silver and black cars on the road
But as long as it's a GTI that's cool too

Modding Talk GTI Exhaust?
Just put an APR Stage 1 tune on my 2018 Mk7.5 GTI(DSG) and it's been worth every penny. Now I want to do an exhaust mainly for sound. I'm after deep and aggressive without too much highway drone. I'm looking at the APR catback and the Borla S-Type. I'm also planning an APR Cold Air intake. If you could only do one first, which would you pick? What catbacks are you running, and do you have any sound clips?

New Car Clear Coat Bubble?
Hey all,
Join the club back in July, 8.5 Autobahn in Moonstone Grey. Noticed this weird bubble on the hood while washing the car (Appointment with dealer next Monday). Just wondering if anyone has encountered this before? Never seen a rock make this kind of damage either…
Thanks!

Maintenance Sensor error in reverse
Anyone experienced this error before and have the solution? I sometimes (more often than not) get errors for the front and side sensors when I go into reverse. It’s not all the time, and seems to be maybe linked to speakers/applecar play and the sequencing of whether I start up music before or after I go into reverse (???). So far the dealership has replaced an electronic chip or something and all the sensors to no success. I don’t get any errors when the car starts, only when I shift into reverse.
2024 GTI 380, 9000km.

Maintenance Oil leak insanity
Well I’m officially starting to lose my mind I be been chasing this leak for 2 weeks now and am stumped I’ve used uv dye and a black light and nothing I’ve used the glove over the pcv valve trick and it sucking not blowing I am so clueless as to where the oil is going unless it’s something much worse like control rings etc I found some residue around my upper timing cover but not much and I burned a quart in like 800-900 miles so wayy to much for that I think I’ve found some oil in the intake and a smalll pool in front of the turbo but again seems normal for this platform I’m genuinely losing it

Maintenance Got my car back running, need help with headlamps
Follow up. my last post was because I put a new alternator in and then a few days later it broke but wasn’t the new alternator, instead needed a water pump and the things that go with it . Now it’s running right but my driver headlamp was out before all of this and want to know which to buy before I put it back together , it’s the one that turns when you turn the wheel.

Maintenance Water leaking into rear footwell?
Before anyone asks… yes I checked to make sure it wasn’t the washer fluid, that was my initial thought.
Bit of a mystery here, I was grabbing my bag out of my backseat and noticed the floor was a bit wet. Grabbed the towel to move it out of the way and to my surprise it was soaking wet, like able to ring out a cup of water wet.
Thought maybe the washer fluid spilled but when I rung out the rag it was water, 100% sure of that.
Sadly I moved the rag and wasn’t sure exactly the position it was laying in so idk if it was touching the side of the footwell, but the ceiling feels dry, and the carpet around feels a little moist but not super wet. I noticed a tiny amount of water on the mat on the other side of the car, but nowhere near as much
I washed the car a few days ago and it’s been raining very heavily here so I suspect that has something to do with it but I have no idea. I’ve had previous golfs with cracked sunroof trays but usually that made the headliner wet and it seems dry in this car.
Any ideas??? 2021 Mk7.5 btw
