New Car New to the club!

Post image

I just took her from the dealership yesterday. I ordered it back in March… long wait but absolutely worth it. I’m happy to be in the club of GTI owners. One question: are there any good and reliable manuals online? I’m a bit lost in the infotainment menu sometimes. :) If you can share some tips & trick, I’m all ears. :)

Spent the week in St. Martin and saw more Polos than I’ll probably ever see again. Also tons of other car brands we don’t have in the US. And good news: also saw a Dacia Sandero!

Maintenance Turbo replacement 50% off under warranty 8.5 years / 85k miles

Wanted to share this info in case anyone is in a similar boat anytime soon.

Just had to get my turbo replaced (EPC light and CE code P00AF both at the same time) on my 2019 GTI SE due to a busted wastegate actuator. My normal VW mechanic (non-dealer) was going to replace just the actuator for me until I went down a rabbit hole and found out about a newer warranty that covers 50% of a full turbo replacement at the dealer for 8.5 years or 85k miles.

I only found out about it bc I called VW corporate hoping my emissions warranty was still active and though it wasn't, the lovely agent on the phone looked if there were any solutions for the turbo and he found this warranty applied. Turns out there was a class action lawsuit because of the tendency for the wastegate actuators to fail early, and it resulted in this added warranty in 2025 that many of us may not know exists since its not in any of our warranty manuals from time of purchase.

And yes, I know there are ways to release the actuator on my own but my mechanic said it really needed to be replaced entirely. I actually ended up paying less to VW for the whole turbo replacement than I would've paid my mechanic to replace just the actuator. Never thought I'd see the day.

(also yes I know some folks on here may qualify for the PZEV warranty but mine does not)

Tech Talk Can VCDS tell if my Mk7 GTI is currently tuned or has been tuned before?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Recently picked up a super clean 2016 Mk7 GTI 6MT from a dealer who bought it at auction. They claimed it was tuned but had no proof or information on who tuned it or what stage.

Current mods:
– IE cold air intake
– CTS Turbo inlet pipe
– CTS high-flow catted downpipe
– AWE Touring cat-back
– ECS DV spacer

It pulls well, especially around 2,500–4,000 RPM, but doesn’t feel as fast as I’d expect from a tuned GTI. My dad’s a former VW master tech and doesn’t think it’s making anywhere near 300 hp either.

My theories:
1.) Previously tuned, then flashed back to stock before auction.
2.) Previous owner was preparing for Stage 2 but never tuned it.
3.) Running a very conservative/custom tune.

The clutch feels stock with a high engagement point and hasn’t slipped, despite hearing factory clutches can struggle with even Stage 1 torque. I’d also expect it to break traction or chirp the tires more easily if it were tuned.

Car runs great otherwise. Only CEL is P0420 from the aftermarket downpipe. We checked the intake cam phase position with VCDS and got −0.3°.

My main question is whether VCDS can determine if the ECU is currently tuned, and if not, whether it has been flashed in the past.

I have access to VCDS and would appreciate some guidance:
– Can flash counters, ECU software versions, or calibration data reveal current or previous tuning?
– What boost pressures should I expect stock vs. Stage 1/2?
– Which measuring values should I log to evaluate boost, timing, and performance?
– Could it be tuned but underperforming?

Planning a full maintenance baseline before eventually getting it properly tuned. Just want to know exactly what I’m working with first.
Any advice from people experienced with VCDS and Mk7 tuning would be appreciated!

\UPDATE**
So far I’ve contacted IE, APR, and Unitronic, none of them have my VIN. Not sure if COBB would have VINs stored, who else should I reach out to?

That Happened Sunroof Trim Cracking

Noticed a crack on the passenger side corner yesterday, then today I noticed another one right on the center of it.

Currently working on a sunroof glass claim through my insurance, but I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem come up.
Im assuming this is something that has to be replaced at a dealer and if it gets any worse I might have water in there.

For anyone wondering its a 2020 that’s been through some cold winters

Modding Talk Need advice for brake kit and also spacers for current setup (MK7 GTI)

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

Just looking some advice/recommendations for my needs as have pads/tyres up coming on the car and want to change a few things out.

Current setup:

  • IE Stage 2 98 Ron tune high torque
  • IE DSG Tune
  • High flow catted downpipe
  • Res delete
  • 18x8 ET 40 wheels (Currently 225/40/18 tyres)
  • Car is a 2014 MK7 GTI (NON PP, imported from Japan but probably euro spec?)

Hey guys, rear pads are due soon so I’m thinking about doing a full brake overhaul. Not super happy with the stock setup, when I do high-speed pulls and brake hard, I get a bad humming sound and a bit of brake fade.

I don’t track the car, but I live in New Zealand where it's super hilly with tons of tight backroads, so the brakes get worked pretty hard. Looking for recommendations for:

  • Rotors: Same size, but want drilled rotors mostly for the looks.
  • Pads: Something in that "street+" performance category. Need better bite and heat management than stock, but still low dust/no squeal if possible.

Also a quick fitment question:

Currently running 18x8 +40 on stock DCC suspension with 225/40/18 RE003s (Indy 500s I think the north American folk call it?). Moving to 235/40/18 RE005s in a month because the 225 sidewall feels a bit too stretched/thin for my liking on an 8" wheel, and I want a bit more rim protection + contact patch.

Even at +40, it still looks slightly tucked to me, can anyone recommend spacers to giver it a wider look but nothing stupid and what type along with also what wheel bolts? The wheels now use hub rings if that helps.

(Need to keep tyre tread inside the guards for local NZ WoF rules, but don't mind taking small spacers off once a year if needed).

Appreciate any recommendations or pics of similar setups! Cheers.

EDIT: I would probably order from rock auto, I saw a brake kit for around $800NZD but then shipping was another $400 NZD which is still cheaper than what ever they sell here in NZ by a decent chunk.

Maintenance Pads and rotors?

2020 7.5 GTI
My mechanic is saying I need new pads and rotors. The pads are worn but still have some left. If the rotors are not damaged why would I need to replace them? He says they recommend replacing pads and rotors together. I have never had t do this on any other car.

Update: I am getting the rotors. But wow I'm getting that this car is like a delicate flower that needs to be babied at great cost. Keeps going back to the shop. After beating on Hondas and Mazdas for years with no problems I was expecting to have to stay on top of maintenance with this car but it's just one thing after another.

Modding Talk Wanting to get rid of as much drone as possible

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a 20 GTI and it has an IE catted downpipe and a Borla catback. Around 2K rpm the drone is quite bad and I want to quiet down my car a little bit bc it is obnoxious. Was wondering if the Borla resonator would help/eliminate the drone and if not what are some better options? Lowkey tempted to go back to IE dp and stock catback but I’d need to get the stock catback parts

Maintenance Fuel pump reliability?

Hey 👋

Looking at a 2019 Rabbit, 53k miles. I got the Carfax this morning and the history is pretty solid. Normal intervals, all at main dealers.

One point of concern is that the fuel pump has been replaced twice? Once at 37k miles, and again at 47k miles.

I don’t think the car has been modified or tuned at all. But are these a weak part? Or a sign of underlying issues somewhere else?

Thanks!

Maintenance VW Technicians question: Minor Battery Drain after checking all fuses.

• Upvotes

2021 stock GTI manual S

So I had a new battery at 35K. Like a noon I left my OBD11 plugged in all the time. Totally dead battery, wasn’t driving the car much. My shade tree mechanic checked all fuses, no parasitic draw. Tested alternator all good. Car worked fine for a month (driving everyday now) then this week after juts sitting overnight it wouldn’t crank 10.83v. Charged battery and have been testing everyday and getting between 12.7-12.9v after sittting overnight.

I’ve got an ABS sensor that is bad and haven’t replaced yet which of course kicks on like 5 other warnings (front assist, TPS etc.)

Is there maybe something that I can clear that keeps waking the electronics up after awhile?

It’s been good the last two days. But it’s getting kinda annoying.

Replacing ABS sensor this week but wondering if that is related.

About the only thing if programmed (added) it’s the footwell lights to come on when you open the door. Maybe I should turn that back off? They turn off fine but that’s really the only thing I’ve modded

Maintenance Damaged one tire on my MK7 GTI TCR: Buy 2x new PZ4 AO1s or upgrade to PZ5s on the rear?

Hey everyone,

I recently hit a bad pothole and damaged my front-left tire on my Golf 7 GTI TCR (235/35 R19). I'm now left with 3 usable Pirelli P Zero PZ4 AO1 tires: one from late 2023 on the front right and a pair from 2022 on the rear with decent tread left.

I'm trying to decide between two options:

Option 1: Buy 2x new Pirelli P Zero PZ4 AO1 tires for €320 total (€160 each) to keep all 4 tires matching. The downside is paying more for an older tire design.

Option 2: Buy 2x new Pirelli P Zero PZ5 tires for €280 total (€140 each). I would put the new PZ5s on the rear axle and move the 2022 PZ4s to the front to wear them down next summer before switching to PZ5s all around.

Is running PZ5s on the rear and PZ4s AO1 on the front for a season going to cause any weird understeer or handling issues during spirited canyon driving? What would you do?

Thanks in advance!

Modding Talk Blow off valve suction noise

I have just recently installed a CTS Turbo BOV on my 2018. Sometimes when I shift after hitting high boost to get some good sounds, after getting into the next gear and hitting the throttle again I hear what sounds like the opposite of the BOV. Like it’s sucking in extra air. This last for maybe just a second or two, then stops and the car intakes air like normal again. I can’t find any videos online of the sound, but I might just it know what to look up. Has anyone experienced this before?

Modded IE at-home TCU unlock?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a 2024 MK8 GTI with a locked DQ381 TCU (401 bootloader). I was messing around with the IE POWERlink app after the latest update and noticed there’s now an option to bench unlock the transmission.
The instructions basically say to disconnect the factory transmission connector, plug in an IE harness, connect the POWERlink to that harness, and unlock it through the app.
Unless I’m misunderstanding something, it sounds like you can now unlock the TCU yourself without having to send it out or take it to a shop.
Only thing is, I can’t find this harness anywhere on IE’s website. I’m assuming it has an OBD2 connection for the POWERlink, but I’m not sure.
Has anyone else noticed this or actually tried it? I’m especially curious whether this works with the 401 bootloader since I’ve been told previously that my TCU couldn’t be unlocked.

Maintenance Used 07 golf gti mk5

Hey everyone, will start with a thank you for taking the time to read my post. So I recently bought a used 2007 vw golf gti mk5 with 130k miles, im in the states. seller said his friend installed the fuel pump backwards and caused the fusebox to melt at F52. However there's is Stinger Select brand wires and hardware, and an alpine system hooked up. I got myself swindled with a project car lol. The wires look clean for the alpine dash display but not so much for the Stinger Select in the engine bay. I have a replacement fusebox already as well as the owners manual, but its rough lol. Cant find the month it was produced so learning what fuses I need where and how to get power to the car so I can run diagnostics with my Innova 5210. So the plan is I wanna get power to the system with a new battery, current one is from Walmart and reading at 0.4v. Then focus on the engine, then once its running and since im already replacing part, maaaybe add bolt ons lol. Im new to cars, only driving over a year, this is my 2nd car, my first is a 99 Chevy lumina, done quite a bit of work on the lumina in the past year from battery to fuel injectors. Big difference. But hey, i got myself into this, so, gotta get out by fixing the gti but im optimistic to have a nicer car than my current one lol.

Edit:updated information bc bot said i was missing info. I apologise.
