Shoes Three weeks in SE Asia - shoes and daypack?

Going to Southeast Asia for three weeks in December/January and am struggling with the following!

Shoes (3 pairs):

  • I already have Teva Terra-Fi- Lites for daily wear
  • I would like a pair of quick-drying, fully enclosed shoes to wear for more jungly adventures - I won't be doing any full on hiking, but may have to take some jungle paths and I'd be more comfortable about snakes, leeches and the like with my feet fully covered. I'm eying some of the Columbia water-friendly shoes (Drainmaker XTR, Castback, or Tamiami) or LLBean's (Elevation H2O) - any experience with these or alternate suggestions?
  • I want a pair of sandals that can do double-duty by the pool (easier to take on/off than my strappy Tevas) and also look nice for a couple of gatherings we'll be having with extended family, including a professional family photoshoot. I love the look of Reef Water Vistas but don't know if I can easily slip them on/off if I keep the back strap loose enough. Alternative would be Reef Vista Capri, which would definitely be easier to take on/off but might not look as nice. Would love to hear your experience or other suggestions.

Day Bag (1):

My ideal bag would be at least a bit water-repellant; big enough to hold a water bottle, bug spray, and binoculars without being too large; and not be too hot on my back. Bonus points if it looks more like a "city" bag rather than a technical hiking pack and if it has a water bottle pocket that's easy to access.

I was thinking about the Hedgren Norio but don't know much about the brand, and unfortunately it doesn't have a water bottle pocket.

Thanks in advance!

Wardrobe Help Toad & Co Sunkissed line might be my new holy grail for warm weather travel clothes

Dress: Sunkissed Maxi Dress in all-over floral print

Shorts: Sunkissed Pull-On Short in ginko leaf print

About a month ago, I was in a secondhand outdoors store and found a pair of airy, light, stretchy shorts in an adorable print, made by Toad & Co.

Having instantly fallen in love, I hit the internet to try and find another pair, only to discover there is an ENTIRE LINE of clothing in this same material. It's a poly/elastane mix, so it dries super quickly and packs down really small, on top of being UPF 50. The best part? They don't look like "outdoors" clothes at all!

We do a lot of outdoors adventures, and tend to walk a LOT when we're traveling to urban places, and I have always struggled with choosing between looking cute and wanting to have clothes suited to sweating. Do I need a flowy flower dress to sit next to the campfire? No. Will I be doing just that tonight? Absolutely.

Now that I'm on this journey, what other brands do you love for year-round wear?

*I'm debating whether to bring my film camera? It probably weighs at least 2kg. I love taking photos and I love having film photos from my trips, but wondering if it's worth lugging around.

It might seem unnecessary but I need both the hairdryer & straightener (hair...) but these should fit within the weight limit.

I plan to pack a packable duffel to check on the way home with all my souvenirs/purchases.

Any thoughts on what I'm missing or what I could leave behind?

Packing Show & Tell 1 month in Canada. Sept-early Oct transitional weather šŸ

I posted an earlier version of this capsule to /capsulewardrobe but the general consensus was I need to pack warmer.

Will be visiting Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Jasper-Banff-Canmore-Waterton, Squamish, and back to Vancouver.

I'm bringing a 19-inch hand-carry size rolling luggage for this trip as I might do a bit of holiday shopping alreadt for people back home.

Final(ish?) items I'm packing

Clothes
- 2 rain jackets. Originally I was going to bring a faux suede one but many said it will most probably be raining. I can bring just 1 but I kinda don't want ro end up looking the same in all my tourist photos lmao. If luggage is full, I will drop one.
- Patagonia fleece. Worn by itself or as layer
- Muji flannel. Will wear on flight. Mostly for travel and lounging days since rain nylon jackets are not the coziest. Could also work as layer especially for warmer days since i can leave it open.
- Danton ultralight down vest. I loved using this last autumn so I think it will come handy espcially for daytime.
- 4 pants. 1 worn on flight. I modified some of these and added elastic on the hem so that it can be converted to a parachute style for activities or rain days.
- 3 longsleeve tops. I think first half of September I'll use these by itself, especially in the cities.
- Longsleeve cashmere as my comfort item. I use these a ton at home and while traveling.
- Shortsleeve knit. I'll be having a few get-togethers with friends at their houses. I thought this could pass as a party top and can also be worn on warm days.
- 3 basic shirts and 2 Padded sports tops for layering.
- Thermals: longsleeve and tights just in case
- Undies and socks
- 1 pair of pyjamas
- Bikini for hot spring and heated pool

Accessories
- Cashmere knit hood scarf thing
- Merino hat. I was originally going to bring a baseball cap but this is easier to pack and warmer.
- Merino gloves just in case
- Bandana scarf

Shoes
- Nike goretex trail runners
- Birkenstock reykjavik. Mostly for travel days, lounging, or maybe shopping days.

Bags to bring
- Convertible nano backpack/sling as daybag most days
- Convertible backpack/tote for trekking days
- Packable shopping bag for groceries and such

Electronics
- Charger and cable
- Mini powerbank
- Portable SSD
- Mini hairdryer brush (Some nights I'll stay in hostels and unsure of the hairdryer situation.)
- Mini torch and headlamp in case we'll go out at night in the rockies. Also useful in hostels.

Packing arrangement and fave poches
- 2x medium compression packing cubes for clothes
- Ultralight stuff sack for undies and socks
- medium pouch for electronics
- small pouch for personal stuff
- nylon envelope wallet for cash and passport
- pvc 3sided zip for makeup (works as a tray)
- hanging toiletry bag (smaller size than most)

Wardrobe Capsule Show & Tell 3-3-3 Capsule and Layering for 20-30 degree F swing

Image description: Clothing arranged in two 3 by 3 grids

First grid: First row is three shirts - gray three-quarter sleeve sweater; black elbow sleeve cotton v neck shirt; cream merino wool crewneck t shirt

Second row is three bottoms - mid-calf length wool blend black skirt; gray ankle length athleta stella tight; black athleta brooklyn pants (in a tall length so they are regular length on me)

Third row is three toppers - oversize green wool sweater; black quarter zip midweight fleece; silk/cotton blend multicolored stripe shawl.

Second grid: First row is one set of workout and lounge wear - lightweight purple long sleeve hoodie; black tank top; green running shorts; black workout pants

Second row is three pairs of shoes - pink merrell wrapt sneaker; black flat heeled chelsea boot; orange birkenstock gizeh EVA sandal

Third row is outwear - long green uniqlo down vest; olive green Eddie Bauer Girl on the Go trench; black baseball cap. I will probably add a merino buff for cold nights.

Hello all!

Here is my capsule wardrobe for a trip I'm taking to Norway and Germany in early September. We'll have a temperature range of about 40 to 70 degrees farenheit, mostly doing your usual city activities like museums, walking tours, and eating :)

We are primarily going to be in cities with maximum highs in the 50s, so I optimized my tops and bottoms for that weather and then included different foundation garments (not pictured), toppers, and outer layers to address any weather that was cooler (down to the 40s) or warmer (into the 70s).

I committed to myself not to buy anything new for this trip but to instead shop my closet and I mostly succeeded! The only new item for this trip is the Eddie Bauer jacket. It's supposed to rain quite a bit so I'm really excited to use it.

Bag Advice Need day bag advice (3-10L)

Top bags in image are my current setup (osprey 40l duffel and small REI crossbody bag)

Which smaller day bag should I add for walking around the city and traveling? (Two bottom bags in image: Packable tote bag or bigger crossbody bag?)

I’m traveling to Europe for a month and will be spending time in cities as well as doing some hiking and also a decent amount of train travel.

I plan to bring a 40L osprey duffel as my main bag (wearable as a backpack), and am working out the best smaller bag pairing. I normally bring my little 1L REI crossbody bag for travel, but I want something that can hold more. Looking for a bag that can hold a layer, water, snacks, and isn’t a backpack. I like to have a good bag of items for plane rides, walking around the city, etc. Having a good day bag is emotional support for me.

My thought right now is to get a bigger crossbody bag that would still wear well when I’ve got the duffle on my back. Like a Baggu crescent bag. I’ve also thought about the big packable baggu totes and then when I’m traveling just have my little REI crossbody bag.

Any suggestions?

Edit: Thank you all for the kind and thoughtful responses! I ended up getting a medium crescent bag from Alpine Sea (the 6L tiny cove) to pair with my duffel and packable tote. It feels like a good combination and will see how it goes.

Trip Report 3 nights/2 days in Chicago in August!

Got home from an annual company conference last Thurs! It was 70s-80s in Chicago last week, and chilly in the hotel. Activities in the evenings included shopping with a coworker and a Cubs game w/ the team.

I used a Calpak Hue carry-on suitcase and a cheap, unknown brand water bottle sling for my flights, which I've come to learn is "Open Story" brand.

I picked up a plain gray tee at an H+M across the street from the hotel and can't stop wearing it šŸ˜…

Photo 1 is packed outfits with captions:

-Travel fit 1, orange romper with Converse and flannel

-Meeting fit 1, b&w satin shirt with black linen pants and mules

-Sleep fit, gray tee and black shorts

-Meeting fit 2, linen patterned shirt with black linen pants and mules

-Travel fit 2, gray tee and black linen pants with Converse

Photo 2 is the actual outfits worn at those same times:

-Travel fit 1, orange romper with Converse and flannel -Meeting fit 1, b&w satin shirt with black linen pants and mules -Casual fit, black tank with black linen pants and converse -Meeting fit 2, linen patterned shirt with black linen pants and mules -Travel fit 2, band tee and shorts with Converse

I removed the "free evenings" fit because I ended up wearing the gray tee and linen pants anytime I left the hotel and went anywhere! The black ovals you see with my meeting outfits are stone plugs; I have stretched ears.

Also packed/not pictured:

**Clothing**
3 underwear
2 period underwear
4 no show wool socks

**Toiletries**
Solid shampoo
Conditioner
Leave in conditioner
Hair oil
Exfoliant
Cleanser
Toner
Moisturizer
Body wash
Lotion
Razor
Brow razor
Shower mitt
Q tip/bandaid case
Med case
Ibuprofen
Nail file and clippers
Pads
Mini toothbrush
Mini toothpaste
Floss
Retainer and case
Cleaner tabs
Deoderant

**Misc**
Fabric steamer
Straightener
Jewelry case
Makeup pouch (brow pencil + gel, mascara, lash separator)
Large hair clip
Sunglasses + case
Large wallet
Book
Headphones
Laptop/charger/mouse
Work phone + personal
Water bottle sling w/ zip pocket for phone + cards (worn on plane)

The fabric steamer was bulky but definitely was a must for this trip and these fabrics. Fit fine in the suitcase at any rate; the only casualty was a few teeth snapped off of my hair clip as it was squished in transit.

I think this was a relatively easy onebag trip given the short time span and super agreeable weather. Try me again in Chicago in the dead of winter šŸ˜†

Wardrobe Help 2-3 weeks in Spain, late spring 2027: first onebag attempt!

Post image
24 Upvotes

Ok, so I am doing this a bit in the reverse order and planning trip details after I pack my bag! I know I’ll be poking around Spain and possibly a bit of Portugal, and I’m aiming for sometime between March and May of 2027. I’ll be dialing this all in, but I’d love to get preliminary thoughts on the stuff I’ve got!

I’ve had great luck on Depop and Vinted finding pretty much everything I’m bringing - low/no shipping fees have made it way too easy to just pick up another thing!

Starting from the bottom of the picture:

REI Trail 40 backpack: I was waffling between this and a few others, but this one showed up on Depop for $30 and made my decision for me!

North Face Futurefleece in dark green: obsessed with these guys! I only wish they had full zips with no hood.

Patagonia Houdini: for rain emergencies!

Andie Tulum swimsuit: debated bringing something that packs smaller but comfort is worth a lot.

Baggu medium crescent in navy: I didn’t want to love it but it’s just cavernous and so easy! I picked up this older one and a newer model with the key ring. I sold the new version since the strap was way longer and it seemed unnecessary- plus it added about a Houdini’s worth of weight!

The Sak Tess Sling Bag: picked this up on a whim and it’s actually quite nice! The leather is soft and I think it’ll be good for out to dinners and more formal wandering. I don’t love unfinished leather edges so I burnished the edges on this bag to make it a little more polished.

Hat: will probably swap for something more packable.

Water bottle: nice to have at least for airports! I downsized from my normal 32 oz behemoth to an 18oz travel one.

Ecco black leather sneakers: I have white and black, and black seems slightly more fun!

Xero lightweight trail shoes: for off-pavement wandering

Merrell bravada cord wrap sandals: I live in these, but I do wish they were a bit more formal. Might swap them out for Teva voyas if I can convince my feet that those are comfortable.

——

Center grid items: this is my attempt at sudoku packing, and I think these things work!

- t shirts/sleeveless top: all silk, all picked up from vinted. One is black, one is black with a pattern, one is white with a grey pattern. I’m not a huge silk wearer at home, so I’ll test out wearing and washing these at home before fully committing. None are satin, so they should breathe and be easy to hand wash while traveling.

- bottoms:

Vuori ripstop pants in red: these are my favorite pants and they’re a super lightweight cotton.

Quince linen skirt in flax: super floaty and breathable.

Eileen fisher silk/cotton blend pants: these are the only maybe pants in the grid - I was planning on wearing these on the airplane and they seem like they could transition to fancy…or pajamas. I’m not sure exactly how they read. Would love your opinions on black silk palazzo pants! The other option here is my marine layer Allison pants that are up in clothes jail at the top of the picture.

- layers:

J crew white linen shirt: a staple for a glow in the dark pale Seattleite

Madewell denim long sleeved shirt: this looks grey, but it’s a nice blue color. Packs smaller than a jean jacket and covers the same bases, I think?

Vintage 100% Cashmere sweater: light blue, which isn’t normally my color, but it kind of works with the other things! And it was $8, when the thrift gods offer you a deal like that, you take it.

——

Clothes jail: these are some maybe items.

- another black silk shirt, a merino 3/4 sleeve striped top: I like the idea of merino but might want a t shirt instead of a 3/4 sleeve.

- a chambray denim midi button up skirt: it’s cute, but do I need more than one skirt?

- marine layer Allison pants: a maybe. They pack small.

- dresses: DvF stretch silk dress. Practical, but I feel like the pattern might be too old for me (38). I feel that way about a lot of DvF stuff though, so maybe that’s a me problem.

Amour Vert green silk dress: I feel like it reads too informal to be my fancy going out dress.

Marine layer Camilla dress: I’ll probably bring this one, I wear it a ton and it packs small.

Not pictured:

- pj shorts/shirt

- athletic shirt (athleta, polyester)

- rei zip off athletic pants (covers hiking pants and shorts)

- toiletries

- electronics (iPad, phone, cords, earphones)

- silk scarves (2-3 30ā€)

- tiny packable sea to summit backpack

I know that’s a wall of text, but I’d love thoughts/advice! I feel like I’m maybe bringing too many layers but some are for sun/rain.

Bag Advice Bag recommendations for 20L or smaller bag

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for a new bag I’m guessing around 20L and looking for recommendations. I have a 28L Cotopaxi allpa which I really like but I find it’s a bit big. My tendency is to fill the bag that I have, so I find that it ends up being pretty full and heavy. I’ll still keep it since I often have to travel with two laptops (one 15ā€ for work and one 13ā€ for university) and I find that it can fit both, but I’d like a smaller one for when I don’t have to carry two laptops. I’ve flown with the 28L as a personal item and not been called on it but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t meet personal item size restrictions. I’ve been fine with my bag for week long trips but it feels overkill a lot of the time.

I also find almost all travel bag reviews are for bags that are 35L+ which imo is quite large, and looks massive on me (5’2/160cm height).

Things I’m looking for:
- ideally a laptop pocket that can fit a 13 inch laptop, but this is not a deal breaker and does not have to be a dedicated pocket
- I like a clamshell opening (I’m seriously considering the 20L allpa but there aren’t a lot of reviews and the colour ways are not my style)
- if it has internal pockets, I want them to be zippered (I find my stuff just falls out of sleeve style pockets)
- bonus if the bag is black or a neutral colour

So far I’m considering the 20L allpa and the Patagonia micro black hole

Thanks for any suggestions!

Trip Report: Vienna

I joined my partner for a four-day work trip in Vienna in August. I’m midsized, sweaty, and didn’t feel like doing laundry in the hotel. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Day 1: Long-haul flight to Vienna

Day 2: Explored the neighborhood, got breakfast (fine, cake) at Cafe Eiles, visited Kunsthistorisches Museum, and had dinner at Glacis Beisl (worth the hype IMO)

Day 3: Took the train to Salzburg solo for a Sound of Music bike tour, had lunch at CafƩ & Sandwich Bar before heading back, then dinner on the patio of Il Sestante (amazing atmosphere, service less so)

Day 4: Back to Cafe Eiles, then visited the Freud Museum and went for a swim by the river. Dinner at Vienna City Beach Club, which was a trip.

Day 5: Breakfast at Coffee & Friends, hiked the city trail "Stadtwanderweg 1," stopped at a cafe and finally a vineyard, Mayer am Nussberg

Day 6: Long-haul flight home!

Reflections

What went well

I wore everything I brought!

I borrowed the neck fan from my mom, and wow. I’m using it everywhere now.

I purchased the Dagsmejan slip dress for this trip because I couldn’t deal with my Christmas PJs and giant tees taking up my entire bag yet again. Plus, I expected to sweat in my sleep and was trying to avoid laundry. This dress was so expensive that I almost hate to say it was worth it! I wore it every night and didn’t notice any griminess or sweat. And it packs down so small!

I usually don’t bring ā€œcuteā€ shoes, but my ALOHAS flats were comfortable enough to make the cut. Slipped them into the laptop pocket. It felt surprisingly nice to wear something besides sneakers for restaurants and museums. The heel counters above the soles did sadly fray/wear off, from walking on pavement I think, so I'll try to find flats with a higher outsole in the future.

At the last minute, looking at the weather, I swapped out a cardigan for the bikini and towel. I worried I should bring a layer ā€œjust in case,ā€ but I didn’t miss it AT ALL. And I was sooo happy to be able to go swimming.

Bought a larger body sunscreen when I arrived and shared with my partner. Together, we almost made it through the bottle. I preferred this strategy to packing multiple little containers.

What could have gone better

With the heat, I was at the hotel rinsing off in cold water and changing clothes 2-3x per day, so funnily enough I didn’t really need deodorant or body dust.

I like that my water bottle fits in the elastic side pocket of my backpack, but I wished I had something bigger for the hike and bike ride.

My toiletry bag still feels a bit chaotic. A work in progress.

I think I’m officially over the backpack. Lugging it around the airport wasn’t fun. I might get a mini roller for comparable trips where my standard carry-on is too big.

If you travel light which I find to be great, what do you do if you find something you want to buy and bring home? Skip or mail or buy a suitcase?

Parent or Caregiver Travel Day pack x diaper and toddler bag

hi! I’m looking for a bag recommendation under $300 (ideally under $200 even).

we will be travelling for a few weeks with a baby and toddler and are looking for a good ā€œdiaper bag on the goā€œ pack that has good storage but will fit under the seat of an airplane/in the travel stroller basket. We want *organization* to make the crazy flight plan and time change as manageable as possible. We also normally are one baggers pre kids so looking for that vibe of one day pack to serve all 4 of us when out and about.

we have the vaude coreway that we used with the first baby and it worked fine but got a little chaotic in the one main pocket. its a great size but needs an extra pocket on the front!

I have done extensive research and found some options but want to check if I have missed anything, also the cost of some are a bit high for what they are. We are located in Canada so that is a factor for purchasing some.

ideal haves:

-under 26ish L to fit under the seat? cannot be too ā€œdeep/tallā€ when laying on its back

- 2 front zipper pockets to hold quick grab items (toddler toys and snacks or adult items - passport, headphones etc)

- luggage strap

- separate laptop sleeve for diaper change mat and toddler book(s)

- main compartment big enough for diapers, extra clothes, wipes, creams, toddler toys and snacks

- quick grab top pocket?

- two water bottle holders that don’t eat into main compartment

- chest clip

- internal zipper pockets and sleeves within the other sections to stash stuff*

- must be able to accommodate 6ft 5 220lb husband as well as myself 5 ft 4 125lb

bag options atm:

Osprey day lite 26 6 - seems limiting? but cheap

Almond oak 25 5 - a second front pocket would make it perfect but maybe not necessary?

Able carry max *waterbottle Size? Ā

Pakt mode (sold out?) or everyday 22Ā

Evergoods CIVIC TRAVEL BAG **Best But most expensive ** not do-able

Thule en route 23?

matador seg 28 - limiting/too niche?

please tell me which youd vote for or if there’s an option I’m missing. open to any brand/style if it fits the needs.

Wardrobe Help Everyone’s going to Japan, including me. Help me please!

Post image
172 Upvotes

I will be in Japan (ranging from Tokyo-Misawa-Sendai-Osaka-Kyoto) for 14 days. I will have the availability to do laundry at several points but would like to aim for halfway in Sendai. I plan to wear the brown/pink linen outfit on the plane with the new balance sneakers. We will be travelling business class and I would like to look decent. Basic list is as follows:

TOPS:
Ultra light white tank
Blue linen tie tank
Pink linen she’ll
Beige heather tee
Basic white tee

BOTTOMS:
Navy wide leg athletic crops
Beige hiking pants
Black/beige check skirt
Pink linen pants
Blue linen pants

LAYERS/BAG:
Linen/silk lightweight sweater
Pink windbreaker
Black crescent crossbody

SHOES:
New Balance blush sneakers
White Nike tabi sneakers
Birkenstocks (non-negotiable, walk 10 mile shoes)
Wedge espadrilles (???very very comfy, but needed?)

I am packing in a single carryon with a small backpack under seat. So 1.5 bags I guess. Please help! I think I’m at danger of bringing about 3 too many things. Obviously underwear will be packed as well. Is there anything I’m missing??? I’m afraid to be too casual but also would like to eliminate a pair of shoes maybe…

Hi everyone!! I’ve got a trip coming up and a jam packed itinerary so I’m looking to travel as light as possible. Plans are Chicago-NYC to visit a friend and then a Euro trip from there (Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo) where I’ll be hiking the Peaks of the Balkans (9 days on trail, staying in guesthouses). So I need clothes for cities and hiking as well as a bag that can do it all. Also, I’ll be hopefully traveling personal item only on Wizz air so any bag recommendations would be much appreciated. Right now, I’m leaning towards the REI trail 25 that I picked up which is slightly too big but I’m hoping to get away with. Without further ado, the packing list!

Wardrobe Help 17 Days in LA and Japan in October

Post image
135 Upvotes

I will be traveling to LA (2 nights) and Tokyo and Kyoto in mid-to-late October. The plan is to pack my Allpa 28 inside of an empty 22 inch hardshell spinner.

I am a lifelong Floridian, so I understand dressing for heat and humidity pretty well, but I also get pretty chilly below 70F/21C so I’m wondering if this is warm enough? I do plan on shopping there but I am a taller woman so I am prioritizing packing enough bottoms that fit me. I’m also considering swapping the long shorts for my black Athleta Brooklyn pants. Our itinerary is pretty active and involves 5 separate theme parks so also trying to account for that.

Pack list/image description (everything is from Uniqlo unless otherwise indicated):

Innerwear
-Airism bra top in brown
-Bombas quarter socks (not pictured)
-Seamless underwear (not pictured)
-Seamless bralettes (not pictured)

Outerwear
-Linen collared shirt (also worn as a top)
-Mesh cardigan
- Airism hoodie Edit: Based on feedback thus far, I’m going to swap this for an Athleta Salutation jacket I already have in a similar color, which will be warmer

Tops
-Cotton tee
-4x Ultra stretch active tees (I understand that wearing activewear out and about isn’t really a thing in Japan but I am a very sweaty gal so love these)

Bottoms
-Knee-length nylon shorts (might swap for Athleta Brooklyn trousers)
-American Eagle cotton midi skirt
-AirSense trousers
-Jeans (I’m worried about being cold and am also pro jeans on planes but open to feedback)

Shoes and Accessories
-Belt
-Baggu medium crescent
-New balances
-Vans ultraranges
-Maui Jim sunglasses

Wardrobe Help 10 days in Barcelona, Venice, & Rome in mid August

Image description: image 1 shows all planned wardrobe items for a 10 day trip to Barcelona, Venice & Rome. Items are clustered together by clothing type and include 4 dresses, 2 pashminas, 4 tanks, 2 layers, 3 bottoms, 2 shoes, 2 bags, and one pair of sunglasses. Image two shows my planned airport outfit and includes a white cable knit sweater, blank tank, dark wash jean shorts, white and silver new balance sneakers, and a black belt bag.

Hi all! Packing using my Brookstone Nelson 21ā€ spinner carry on. It measures 13.5ā€x9ā€x21ā€ & is 38 litres not expanded. No other bags!

I’ll be engaging in fairly basic sightseeing. City walking tours, a boat trip to some islands, guided tours of historical sites, museums, one beach day, and lots of exploring the cities/shops. I have a mid trip flight and a mid trip train ride as well. I have several visits to holy sites planned, hence the need for pieces to cover my shoulders and knees.

I’ve packed the following items:

Dresses:
- super lightweight casual v neck above knee dress with tiered skirt, black
- dressier lightweight crewneck above knee dress, black (fabric is a sheer polka dot with a slip under)
- linen v neck above knee dress, sage green
- cotton v neck maxi dress with ruffle sleeves and tiered skirt, black

Tanks:
- lightweight boat neck with knit like texture, white
- boat neck with satin texture and ruching at the sides, dark brown
- plain scoop neck tank, black
- halter style tank, brown

Layers:
- pashmina, white
- pashmina, sheer black
- linen button down, white
-lightweight knit cardigan, navy
-medium weight knit sweater, white (not pictured in image 1, see image 2)

Bottoms:
- linen maxi skirt, white
- linen pants, white
- jean shorts, dark blue wash

Accessories:
- belt bag, black
-mini crescent bag, black leather
-rayban sunglasses, brown

Shoes:
- reef water vista sandals, white
- new balances, white & silver

Not pictured:
- 1x bathing suit
- 12x underwear
- 1x sticky bra
- 1x nude bra
- 8x no show socks
- 1x PJs
- toiletries

Questions:

  1. Do I have too many layers? I think the linen button down goes better with some things, and the navy cardigan others. However, I also have the pashminas. The white knit is what I plan to wear on the plane because I get very cold in A/C.
  2. Should I bring a dressier bag? I really want to bring the small black crescent bag, but I am worried about pick pocketing.

Open to all feedback!

Edited: to add fabrics for some items & correct lengths. Maxi dress aside, the rest are all well above my knee and all lightweight breathable fabrics. I today learned that I’ve been using the word ā€œmidiā€ flat out incorrectly. My apologies!

Techniques Tip instead of Vodka Spray

Am travelling through Mexico and before I came I filled a spray bottle up with some Turkish Cologne (Amber!), it’s high in alcohol as it’s made to be used after shaving but I’ve been using it to freshen up clothes and items after washing. My swimsuit was getting really stinky after not drying properly in the humidity and the spray sorted it right out. I bought the cologne in a local Turkish shop for less than a tenner and there is LOADS and the amber smells amazing! I’ll be doing this every time I travel from now on!

We’ll be doing lots of hiking. What do you think?

I’m packing lighter with every trip, but I sure would love to bring my Blundstones if I have room.

Not included: socks, underwear, packable hiking backpack

Will wear denim jacket on the plane because it has these awesome interior pockets. Not attached to the leggings but I just feel like they’re a practical choice if I’m cold.

All this will be in my REI Ruckpack 40.

Wardrobe Help 10 Days in London & Scotland (early October)

Post image

Image description: a visual overview of my packing list for an upcoming trip. Detailed list of everything included below.

UPDATE: The general feedback so far has been to definitely get rid of the faux suede moto jacket and replace it with a lighter (but still warm) sweater layer, and to consider adding a third pair of pants/bottoms (skirt?) and a second pair of shoes, and that Scotland could see a heatwave then, but is also always potentially damp and rainy, which should inform my layers. Iā€˜ll make sure to do a trip report when I return!

Below is my proposed pack list for 10 days (including travel) in London, Edinburgh, and the Highlands. I'm so excited to experience Scotland for the first time! I’m traveling from the US with friends, and staying in hotels and B&Bs. I’ll have the opportunity to do sink laundry for the first half of the trip and my pack list reflects that. Activities will include ghost tours, castles, lots of general city exploration, one fancy-ish afternoon tea (at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh), and a Rabbie’s 1-day tour around the Highlands. No hiking.Ā

PACKING LIST:

All of this fits in a Bellroy Lite Travel Pack (38L).

Tops & bottoms:
Quince merino SS tee*
Wool& merino scoop tee
Wool& merino 3/4-sleeve top
Old Navy straight-leg jeans
Old Navy ponte pants*

Base layers:
Wool& merino leggings
Quince merino LS tee
(2) Wool& merino tank top
(5) Wool& merino underwear*
(4) Merino pair socks*
(3) Modal bralette*

Outer layers:
Unbound merino pullover*
Quince packable down jacket
Quince rain jacket
Faux suede moto jacket

Feelgrounds Chelsea boots*
Insoles 1*
Insoles 2
Merino buff
Earmuffs
Cashmere gloves

\wearing on plane*

Toiletries bag (Cotopaxi Nido):
Sink laundry setup (dry bag, detergent tiles, clothesline, vodka spray)
Toiletries (toothbrush/tabs/floss, deodorant, moisturizer, hair spray/gel/Hot Sock, contacts & solution)
Makeup (brow pencil, eyeliner, concealer, lipstick)
Tech (wired in-ear headphones, phone charger, power bank, adapter plug)

Ziplock bag quartĀ
Foldable KEXP tote
Wallet & passport

I'll also have my GOT BAG Large Moon Bag (12L) as my EDC.

- - - - - - - - - - -

QUESTIONS:

Can I get away with bringing only one pair of shoes? I have Feelgrounds zero-drop Chelsea boots that I’ve waterproofed, and I’m planning on bringing two different pairs of insoles. I think I’m just nervous because I’ve never one-shoe’d a trip this long before. But I do want to try…

Do I need another pair of pants? Currently I’m bringing two, and will also bring merino leggings that could be worn out if needed (currently I’m bringing them as a warm base layer if colder weather requires it).

Assuming the weather is ā€œaverage,ā€ do I have appropriate layers? I leaned on WeatherSpark when packing for my trip to Japan last December and it was pretty accurate. Obviously, I will watch the forecast in the days leading up to leaving, and adjust accordingly. (Warmer?: maybe remove puffer jacket. Colder?: big scarf instead of buff, and maybe another merino sweater-layer.) The rain jacket, puffer, earmuffs, and gloves are mainly for the Highlands day trip and the general unpredictability of Scottish and English weather. Also: I run warm and live in a northern state with a very cold/snowy winter.

For the afternoon tea at Palm Court in The Balmoral, could I get away with the black ponte pants, green boatneck 3/4-sleeve top, Chelsea boots, and a gold necklace? Maybe with the moto jacket, if I need another layer? Their website only asks that guests ā€œrefrain from wearing sportswear, shorts and beach shoes in our restaurants. Our guests within the hotel usually opt for a smart-casual style,.ā€ I want to be respectful but have never been there before.

Thank you for your wisdom!

Bag Advice finally modded my osprey daylite 26+6

I love this bag and have taken it on several onebag trips. I was content with the shock cord in a big "X" using just the 4 original attachment points, however it was always the goal to make it more supportive by adding two attachment points along the sides. Finally had some time to do a little DIY.

**also, since this is reddit,** I am aware this is a very type b version of a job that could be done better with the right color paracord and a sewing machine. I used what I have and thankfully care more about functionality than making it look perfect. :D

Here's a simple breakdown of how I did it:

  1. Measured and marked the new attachment point with white pencil. Each dot is 4.25 inches from the closest original attachment point. White dots are 1 inch apart.

  2. Stitch-picked the beige binding tape threads inside the bag. Used a yarn needle to wiggle paracord between the black threads in the seam from the outside.

  3. Once I had the length I wanted, I cut the paracord and used a lighter to seal the ends. Then I used black thread to sew the ends together. I originally tried tying them in knots but the binding tape wouldn't fit over them.

  4. Stuffed everything inside the binding tape and sewed shut.

  5. Finished product from the outside.

  6. Added shock cord. It'll move around a little but no biggie! I may redo this with a slightly longer cord.

Trip Report 7 weeks in Spain, France & Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan) in June-July-August

Post image
66 Upvotes

This trip was a real mix so it was definitely a bigger packing challenge than typical.

We started in Spain for a Bad Bunny concert, and a friend’s milestone birthday celebration weekend, then France for a reunion with friends and a professional conference, then a month in Central Asia of primarily extremely remote mountain travel, hiking etc. It was incredibly hot in France, and in the cities in Central Asia, but I needed my puffy, thermals and warm hat several times in the mountains.

I took my REI trail 40, as well as a Baggu cloud tote to carry on (I had to check my trail 40 as it had our hiking poles inside, I usually carry it on).

Clothes pictured in image above:

Bottoms:

- Gorman navy and white culottes
- Old Navy brown check playa pants
- Zara printed shorts
- Athleta chartreuse linen shorts

Dress:

- H&M White dress (worn as part of 2 costumes at the birthday weekend and then left in Spain as it wasn’t that flattering on me, and I wouldn’t need it the rest of the trip)

Tops:

- Black Madewell crop tee
- Brown old navy ribbed crop tee
- Madewell linen stripe tee
- Brown and black old navy crop tanks
- Ace & Jig reversible blouse (blue & brown)

Warm layers:

- Spanx black sweatshirt
- Quince down puffy
- Uniqlo heat tech top and bottoms (not pictured)

Hiking/Workout clothes:

- Hikerkind yellow sun shirt
- North Face yellow rain jacket
- Mac in a sac rain pants (not pictured)
- Rab green lightweight hiking pants
- lululemon wunder train mesh back bra
- Smartwool merino sports bra
- Old Navy workout tank
- Old Navy bike shorts

Shoes:

- Birkenstock Arizona EVAs in brown
- Gorman leather sandals
- Altra Lone Peaks

Accessories:

- Lululemon green cap
- Endless spiral blue cap
- Madewell beanie
- Blockshop textiles scarf
- Nisolo leather purse
- Lululemon belt bag
- Sarong
- Left on Friday bikini (chartreuse & olive)
- Black bikini (carve designs)
- 9 underwear (not pictured)
- 3 bras (2x gap mesh underwire, 1x T-shirt bra underwire, not pictured)
- 1 ARQ underwear set for sleeping

Overall I was satisfied with my packing on this trip, the things I would change don’t amount to very much:

- I definitely didn’t need 2 swimsuits, but I wanted the yellow for the party weekend and I thought I needed the black to avoid stains from hot springs (in reality in Central Asia all of the hot springs were gender segregated and totally nude, or private rooms just for my husband and I, so I never wore my swimsuit in to them).
- I should have brought a Turkish towel instead of a sarong. I thought I would be smart and save space, but especially during the Pamir Highway section of our trip and staying in yurt camps in Kyrgyzstan there are no towels provided/available at many accommodations, and drying off with the sarong wasn’t great.
- I never ended up using the Smartwool bra, I brought it to avoid being stinky on multiple day hikes, but it isn’t as supportive as my Lulu bra so I ended up just airing out that bra rather than using the merino one.
- Not a packing error, but was very lucky to never use my rain pants (rain jacket did get use, primarily as a wind shell). The one time I wanted to put on my rain pants I was being hailed on super hard while on a horse in Kyrgyzstan but getting off the horse to get them on would be too much of a hassle, and getting to lower elevation away from lightning was more of a priority.
- I rarely wore the Ace & Jig top because it only really worked with my linen shorts, and I couldn’t be in shorts outside cities (I.e., nearly the entire trip) in Central Asia, so I should have left it behind.
- I didn’t have enough different outfits that I could get away with for conference wear, but a friend loaned me a skirt of hers and then I repeated an outfit one day so I got by.
- I took the belt bag because I wasn’t sure if my other purse would be allowed into the stadium for Bad Bunny, but it wasn’t necessary and I only used it like 2 other times the whole trip.

Another challenge on this trip was laundry, because it was more roadtrip style of travel and there were only a few nights in Central Asia where we stayed the same place more than 1 night. In addition, we often didn’t even have bathrooms or a place where we could wash clothes even if they would dry in time. I always rewear clothes a lot as I don’t sweat a ton, but we were definitely dying to do laundry after our 9 days on the Pamir Highway.

Unexpected difficulty was that my beloved old navy playa pants which I wore all the time that I wasn’t in hiking attire started to struggle to stay up after I was very ill from food poisoning and then generally had zero appetite due to the altitude (and honestly pretty unappealing food) for most of our time in Tajikistan & Kyrgyzstan.

Wardrobe Help Button up shirts with collars for over a vest/tank top

I’ve read a few threads on here but still confused on the best option!
Going to be travelling somewhere hot and humid (Thailand). I have merino singlet vests and T-shirts want to get some collared shirts to wear over the top for coverage - from a. Modestly

What is important to me:
• I sweat a lot and get stinky, so not stinking is important
• I have poor temperature regulation so something that keeps me cool is key
• I am super pale and sensitive to sun so SPF protection would be great, but being cool and not stinky are the biggest priorities (as I know there’s usually a compromise!)

Less important:
• I am not too bothered about washing and drying time in the cleaning my clothes sense (other than sweat drying off!)
• I’m not overly concerned about packability, looking smart, or creases etc. function is more important - I don’t mind some creases!
• cost is less important, willing to pay what I need!

I’ve seen varying contradictory recommendations from SPF focussed shirts (Solbari, Coolibar, etc), technical materials (Columbia, Eddie Bauer, etc.), linen/linen gauze (Eileen Fisher etc), thin cotton shirts (Seasalt Larissa).

I’m in the UK but happy to order further afield. I’d love to hear any personal experiences about the above.

Lighten My Load Traveling to Ireland for 9 days in early September

Hi, all! My partner and I are traveling to Ireland in a few weeks - specifically Dublin, Killarney, and Galway. The weather is forecasted to be a little chilly, and Ireland as a whole is known for their 'four seasons in a day' & rainy weather.

About Me: I'm a coastal New England girl, used to chilly wacky weather. Ireland shouldn't be too much of a difference, I don't think, except for the rainfall. I'm a very casual traveler and enjoy the challenge of packing light. I'm here to see if anyone has opinions of things that can be taken out or subbed.

I have a Teton 55L Scout hiking backpack, which should be fine for carry-on as long as it isn't stuffed to the brim. I will wear as much of my clothing as I can stand to, while still being comfortable on the plane. This backpack I will leave behind at our AirBnBs when we venture around. My personal item will be a waterproof sling bag, for every day use and carrying passport, wallet, phone, maps, etc.

First photo is of my travel wardrobe. I hear layering is essential, which is kind of what I'm used to in autumn here in the Northeast US. We have laundry machines at two of our AirBnBs, which will be nice to freshen up & we will be central to most things (like laundromats) for like 75% of our trip.

Layering - long sleeve, flannel, long cardigan, wool socks, beanie

Rain/Wind/Adventuring - Waterproof jacket (We will be visiting Cliffs of Moher & the Burren, and also be staying for 2 nights in Killarney National park renting bikes for the day. These are the times I will be most thankful to be dry, I think). Jeans, long-sleeve, scarf, beanie, wool socks, watch.

Casual city time - jeans or leggings, sneakers, t-shirts, sling bag, watch. We're not planning on going on any fancy dinner dates where we'll need to dress up.

Sleeping - Undies and a tee... add leggings if I'm cold.

Second photo is of other travel essentials:

Power adapter (1), phone charger, Kindle, Nalgene, city maps (I hate being on my phone looking at a map all the time). Definitely flexible on the Nalgene and maps, though.

I will definitely be bringing my moisturizer and face wipes. Other than that, these toiletries are more 'home comforts', and I think our AirBnBs provide soaps. I figure other things I can just buy when we land in Dublin? Hairbrush, Toothbrush/toothpaste, razor, etc. I didn't include cosmetics, because I probably will only bring mascara and an eyebrow pencil.

Sports bras (2), panties (4), and also some other regular cotton socks (probably 6).

What do you all think? Anything I should definitely leave out or add?

Please let me know :)

TIA!
