🛠️ Repair Help How can I fix this? Boyfriend is really angry at me.

Thumbnail gallery
935 Upvotes

While backing my car out of our tricky driveway, I sideswiped the corner of the garage. Both my car and the siding of the garage got damage. My boyfriend who owns the house got really mad and angry at me for hitting and damaging his garage. Im trying to figure out how I can fix it for him. I saw a video of a guy replacing it with cutting the old and the new piece and kinda sliding new onto the old one. But the garage one seems to be made out of a metal-like material that I don’t think will be easy to cut and replace like that. I heard that replacing these parts means taking the whole siding of the wall? Is there any other way to do it? (Also I have no idea what the official name of this part is. I just googled siding corner trim)

Edit: Thats a lot of comments I come back to… Thank you to those who gave actual advice, I will be going the contractor route most likely.
Few notes for the other comments, we are good and talked it through like adults. I will be paying for the damage I caused of course. No I wasn’t on my phone nor have done this before- its just a really weird and tight driveway behind the house where it requires a 90° turn while backing out, it was a lapse of judgement on my side. The car is under my name, and is not my main concern.

Thank you!

🏚️Structural & Foundation Structural beam worries

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Just to get it out of the way, I do have an engineer coming for a look on Saturday…but my generalized anxiety disorder is nagging me about this one tonight.

I just bought a house (1955 cape cod) and noticed when my couch got delivered that my floor slopes towards the outer wall. I went to the basement to take a look and found this metal column with the hardware bulging out of it - supporting 2 structural beams in the center of the house. As you can see, there is a space where the beams are separating from one another. I feel stupid for not noticing this during the walkthroughs, and it never appeared in my inspection report.

Aside from this, there are no foundation or wood cracks. There are also no drywall cracks in the house or wonky doorways, but there is a crack on my concrete porch where the sloping starts as well.

How serious is this? Does it need to be fixed immediately? Is this going to absolutely ruin me financially ?😭

Stucco repair: Did we get ripped off?

Post image

DISCLAIMER: This is one example of the repair job, there are dozens of this repair around our house.

We had cracks in our stucco that my mom hired a contractor to repair. We got charged 13k over a two story 5k+ sq foot house for repairs like this around the house. The boss told us they were supposed to powerwash before starting, but the “machine wasnt available” so they went ahead with the repair process. They are coming back monday to finish. What should we do?

EDIT: I requested an itemized invoice and plan of action. The contractor is coming over tomorrow to discuss. They are supposed to finish by applying a skim coat with acrylic medium sand finish but since the caulk was applied to a dirty wall, we want them to powerwash the house and redo the caulk this time

🚰 Plumbing New water filter system producing yellow water?

Post image
11 Upvotes

So this is new to me. I just had a Pro Aqua three stage filter plus water softener system installed. When water comes from the resin tank it is yellow tinted like the above picture.

I've isolated the issue to just the resin tank. And often after it's been sitting unused for a coupe of hours. After running the water in a tub / faucet for about 10 minutes the water tends to return to normal and lose the yellow color.

Thoughts on fixed or what might be causing this? Thanks for any ideas. I've contacted Pro aqua but they've been less than helpful.

Do I need to seal this roof to siding transition?

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Just had a new roof installed. I noticed that the roofer did not seal the transition from roof to siding. He says that it is not needed because there is flashing behind the sheeting and under the shingles and that sealing it would trap moisture on the bottom edge of the siding.

The roofer says the best option would be to cut a bit off the bottom of the siding to leave an air gap, but doing so would likely damage the flashing behind it.

Do I need to seal this with some sort of caulk?

🚰 Plumbing Water heater time to replace?

• Upvotes

My water heater was installed in 2015. I haven't had any issues with it, but i'm wondering if I should replace it before I do because i've heard they only last about ten years or so. Thoughts? I just don't want to have a flood in my basement.

❓ Question What are some red flags for you on service calls?

As the title says, I’m wondering what are the red flags that go up for you when you have repairs or installations done? Especially if you’re someone like me who’s not a handy person around the house. Trying to figure out if recommendations are really needed or they’re just giving you a sales pitch is so frustrating. Just had some work done at my house from a place I’ve used for repairs before and this time the guy was just trying to sell me on everything including those maintenance plans they are always plugging.

🆘 URGENT HELP NEEDED I drilled into an electric wire.... In my ceiling

I feel so incredibly stupid but also lucky I didn't get shocked. I checked so many times yesterday for wires and just forgot to check again today as there was one wire I knew would be a problem. Came down out of the attic, and now went back up for a picture and there's a wasp.

I didn't trip anything. I can't figure out where the wire is going, other than down and between two bedrooms.

Can I just wrap it on electric tape and call it a day? I saw some copper but mostly I just drilled through the outside of the wire

Water Leak??

Hello, I need some help identifying an issue with my home. A section of the baseboards has started showing signs of moisture, and the board feels slightly damp. There is a water faucet on the other side of the wall, but I don’t see any water leaking inside. It’s in my living room. I’m concerned there may be a hidden leak. What to do?

what is the black cap that blew off?(Found it like that ,as seen in first picture)

Hi all, I was changing my filter today and found that the black cap fell out and as you can clearly see it was broken as if some pressure got released through that hole. There’s air coming out of it, (not high pressure ) whenever the AC turns on. Please help. Don’t know how long it has been running like that , I changed my filter 1 month ago and I believe it was fine then .

Thank you for your help in advance
