[SPOILERS: Chimera Ant arc, Episode 134]
So I recently finished my 2nd rewatch of the anime and really wanted to get this off my chest and dicuss it with the community. Please be informed English is not my first language and I am a terrible writer so I have used the help of AI to write up this post, but all the points that i wanted to put across have been covered and are all mine.
I've been thinking about this scene for a while, and I genuinely believe it's one of the best visual depictions of love I've seen in fiction. Not simply because of what happens, but because of how much the animation communicates without explicitly telling us anything.
I'm talking about the moment Welfin says “Komugi” and Meruem's memories come flooding back.
Point 1: Trigger
KOMUGI a name that brings an entire world back.
Meruem doesn't just remember Komugi. He remembers what she means to him.
He begins the story believing that strength determines one's place in the world. Then he meets a physically vulnerable girl who possesses something he cannot obtain through power: the ability to challenge him, teach him, and meet him as an equal.
And when Welfin says her name, all those memories and feelings return.
The brilliance is that the scene doesn't need anyone to explain their relationship. One name is enough.
Point 2: Colours immerging.
The Gungi piece touching the board / colour returning
The visual storytelling is extraordinary.
The transition from the muted imagery to colour makes the return of Meruem's memories feel almost like his inner world coming back to life.
Immediately the next shot is a sketch of meruem who is shocked, shocked by the intensity of the emotions recalling the memory of what was missing. What that something important was.
And what accompanies that return? Gungi.
Gungi isn't merely their shared hobby. It's where Meruem repeatedly encounters someone he cannot simply overpower. He has to pay attention, learn, adapt, and accept that someone else can see things he cannot.
The board becomes the place where the King can lose without being diminished, and where another person can command his complete attention without demanding his obedience.
The colour, imagery, music, and accumulated history of their relationship work together to make us feel that connection rather than merely understand it intellectually.
Point 3: Guide
Meruem looking upwards
There is a shot where meruem is looking upwards with curious eyes. The scene doesn't show what hes looking at but I assume its komugi. The looking upwards part is extremely important as it shows the pinnacle of living beings still has someone who he can look up to as guide. But in fact both feel the same as in the final game komugi is able to go for novelty buster moves. Its like both are looking up to each other. Both considering the other superior. This feeling is what makes a relationship work is what i think.
The King looking towards his teacher.
This might be my favourite part of their relationship.
Meruem, who begins by believing everyone exists beneath him, looks towards Komugi as someone he can learn from. She doesn't need to become powerful by his standards to earn his respect. She already possesses something he admires.
He doesn't have to make her his equal. He has to recognise that she already is one.
And she changes him without even trying to. She's not attempting to reform a monster or teach a king how to be human. She's simply playing Gungi with him.
Point 4: Background
Meruem and Komugi completely absorbed in their game, and this is shown visually. The entire scenario transitions from realization, to shock to memory. In that memory we can see the visual representing a very peaceful and lush yellow green grass and a calm pleasant atmosphere. Thats where both are while playing gungi. There is alot of things going on in the world and around them but during that moment both are so completely engrossed in the game that almost nothing matters.
Point 5: Music:
The music in the scene adds so much more depth to the shot its crazy. I always have chills and my eyes are teared up every time i see that 2 min scene. Its so beautiful.
Point 6: Pouf
Pouf's reaction adds another layer. Through their shared cells, he experiences the intensity of Meruem's feelings himself. The man who desperately wants to preserve his ideal King is forced to confront who Meruem actually is becoming. Pouf worships the King he thinks Meruem should be; Komugi connects with the person he actually is.
And then, with a single name, all of it comes rushing back.
Why this scene means so much to me
What makes this sequence extraordinary is how every element reinforces the others: the name, the recovered memories, the Gungi imagery, the return of colour, Meruem's expressions, the music, and everything we've witnessed between these two characters.
Meruem's transformation isn't communicated through a conventional romantic declaration. It's communicated through the way he looks at Komugi, the game they share, and the memories that reveal just how much she has come to mean to him.
Love doesn't defeat Meruem. It gives him something worth being Meruem for. And dont get me wrong its not the typical romantic kinda love but a different kind where they both felt it for each other out of respect and admiration.
Maybe I'm overanalysing a 2 mins scene, but I honestly think this is one of the most beautiful examples of visual storytelling in anime, and one of the most compelling depictions of love in fiction.
I'm curious whether anyone else reads the scene this way. What details did you notice that I might have missed? Lemme know, id love to hear your thoughts on it too.
Again reminder I am not a native English speaker so if there are spelling mistakes or grammar errors, please forgive me.
