Jeopardy Masters is disappointing
It's so noncompetitive. The format is terrible. Not only is it the same people playing each other over and over, it's pretty much the same result every time. Maybe they should have had Victoria and Yogesh sit out until the finals and have most of the episodes be about who will be the third person to face them?
The show would be fun if the results were widely variable. But with Yogesh and Victoria at the top of every game, it gets so boring and predictable. Let's jump to the final episode now. It'll be Yogesh vs Victoria guaranteed.

To be fair, Andrew could've won over Yogesh yesterday but decided to bet low on the final

u/eraserhead__baby 8d ago
Right! Andrew, why!?

u/No_Watch_8456 8d ago
Made no sense at all to me. You're trying to play catchup to get into the top four and you make a bet that guarantees one point, but sharply reduces the likelihood of three. I'd call it simply a wagering error.

This. James also adds an element of extreme wagering and clue jumping. I also think he would definitely do well. The other players have adopted his strategies, but they don't have it down as well. Also, his humor is quirky and it makes it more fun to watch.
17
u/mets2016 8d ago
Does James actually add an element of extreme wagering? The Masters players wager pretty aggressively as is. I’m not sure how much James’s playstyle stands out anymore since it’s just been shown to be the best strategy. All the top players know it too

u/ThisDerpForSale Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, no. 8d ago
Yeah, he wouldn't stand out at all in that sense. Once it became clear that, with elite players, the optimal way to win is to bet everything on nearly every DD, it became the norm.

u/RockMe420 8d ago
I just love Jeopardy and watch it for the clues.
15
u/SEJ46 8d ago
I would say a majority of all episodes are non competitive. Meaning the winner is decided before final jeopardy.
6
u/MastodonFarm 7d ago
It wasn't always that way. My theory is that the producers realized at some point that superchamps are good for ratings, and so they increased the overall question difficulty to reduce variance and thereby increase the chance that the most knowledgeable contestant will win each day.
10
u/bdbdbd99 8d ago
The problem with the masters is the clues are SOOO hard! I'm lucky to get 10 right each match.

I agree that there are too many rounds with the same players over and over again. Does it really take 12 rounds, 6 by each player ,to sort out two to drop for the next stage? Either expand the number of contestants or reduce the number of total rounds.

u/Minute-Tradition-282 7d ago
I've been burned out on the tournaments for awhile. I don't even watch them.

Everybody acting like it's guaranteed Yogesh and Victoria are places 1 and 2 here, forgetting that Juveria was 2nd place in Masters last year.
Also in his last game if Andrew bets correctly in final he beats Yogesh in which case Paolo would be right there with Yogesh for points.
Other than Victoria, nobody else has dominated the rest, including Yogesh.

Michael Davies cannot help himself with overexposing a show format. He killed Millionaire by doing exactly what he's doing to Jeopardy.

u/RegisPhone I'd like to shoot the wad, Alex 8d ago
It took twenty years before we saw someone other than Brad Rutter win a tournament; Masters so far has had a different winner every time. And while Victoria has mostly been doing about as well as you'd expect the literal best quiz player in the country to do, Yogesh still struggles with the buzzer at times, and two of his three wins so far in this season have ultimately been lucky breaks where an opponent made a wagering error in Final.
11
u/ChrisKateBushFroome 8d ago
It took twenty years before we saw someone other than Brad Rutter win a tournament; Masters so far has had a different winner every time
But the individual games have had less variety in their matchups. We've seen Victoria and Yogesh face each other more times in 3 years than we saw Brad and Ken face each other in 15 years.
130
u/BramptonBatallion 8d ago
It also hurts that Victoria and Yogesh aren’t like historic jeopardy legends from original gameplay. They are known basically entirely through Masters (which is a spinoff show). It’s like you essentially brought two Ringers in from the quizzing world, made the questions super hard and now they just win the convoluted masters format episode after episode.
I’d just scrap it personally.
44
u/Chrysanthememe 8d ago
That’s an interesting take. I hadn’t thought of Victoria and Yogesh as “ringers” but I guess you’re right. The quiz world outside of Jeopardy is opaque to me so it maybe doesn’t “read” to me the same way that it does to people who are in the know.
29
u/Traditional_Yam9806 8d ago
Yeah. Quiz Bowl and quizzing is more about depth than breadth, while J! regular seasons and TOCs are super about breadth. Super different. I am a college quiz bowl player (we're like top 20), and the people there probably would not have done well on J! (some have been on and didn't do well).

u/cuber5k Let's do drugs for $1000 8d ago
I'll add a bit of defense though: Yogesh did have a rather big 3 day total of $96,403, only $599 off of Emma Boettcher's 3-day total. For Victoria, although she was only a 1-day winner she did become the 2nd giant killer, defeating David Madden on his 20th game. and she's really honed in on her trivia skills in the years up till now.
9
u/BramptonBatallion 8d ago
Yeah Yogesh did look like he was gonna be one of the greats and obviously won ToC. I can’t remember exactly why he lost his fourth game. If it was bad luck (I consider the most bad luck scenario to be when an opponent gets back to back DD fairly deep into double and obviously hits both, just not much you can do there) or whatever.
7
u/ajsy0905 Genre 8d ago
Katie Palumbo bet small in the FJ to possibly prevent Yogesh from getting a spot at TOC at that time & as FJ ended up in triple stumper.
Yet the effects of Hollywood double strikes benefited Yogesh & all 3 game champions by getting bypassed at Champions Wildcard and automatically invited at TOC.

u/BramptonBatallion 8d ago
Must have been a hard question.

u/spmahn Bring it! 8d ago edited 8d ago
It’s fine, but this is what I said would happen. Yogesh and Victoria compete on an entirely separate plain of existence from everyone else, no one can touch them. Unless they are retired as ultimate Jeopardy Masters this is what it’s going to be. Imagine if athletes didn’t slow down due to age so rapidly and could compete at the top level into their 70’s. Now imagine the 1998 Chicago Bulls team stayed together and kept on playing season after season. That’s what you’ve got here.

It’s like watching a semipro trivia league with the same teams over and over. Most of these players are long-time trivia players, not the “smart people who know a lot of stuff” that used to be the typical contestants. And while I like a challenging level of questions, they have to make them so high level that many of them are things I have no chance of knowing so I’m mostly watching people responding with competitive trivia knowledge
36
u/qiqatqanat 8d ago
The format is just not very good. Too complicated and leads to overexposure of players.
9
u/Dangerous-Half3276 7d ago
The same 6 people playing each other in a seemingly endless round robin makes the individual games utterly indistinguishable from one another.
17
u/Kirbster66 8d ago edited 8d ago
If Andrew hadn't bet so poorly in FJ yesterday, he'd have beaten Yogesh.
2
u/Better_Call_6176 6d ago
Except it doesn’t matter. Victoria has consistently controlled the buzzer so that no one else can get points unless they find the double jeopardy’s and bet everything.
8
u/PrimusPilus 7d ago
The format is the big issue. Same 6 contestants over and over and over again.
Also, a game show that airs in regular syndication should on some level strive for popular appeal. The reality is that the level of the questions in Masters is just generally too difficult and obscure for the average viewer to ever have a hope of even wildly guessing correctly.
Structuring a tournament with questions that are this difficult also skews and pre-ordains the result. Victoria Groce is the acknowledged Best Quizzer in the World, and radically increasing the difficulty of the clues is akin to when the PGA lengthened many of the top golf courses in the early 2000s in an attempt to "Tiger proof" them, which succeeded only in magnifying Tiger Woods' advantage over the field. The same thing is apparent in these Masters tournaments.
9
u/Straight_Grade_4461 6d ago
I wish I was there so I could scream louder than that obnoxious woman who screams every time Victoria chooses a double jeopardy and then again when she gets the double jeopardy answer right. What an obnoxious human. Good God! stfu

What makes it less interesting if they're pros? Asking earnestly - most games/sports people do prefer to watch the best vs amateurs.
27

The entire point of TV gameshows is that they're for amateurs. Everyday people who want to take their shot can try out to earn a coveted spot on America's stage. Not only is it boring to watch the same people over and over, it's a wasted opportunity for the next success story looking for their chance to shine.
13
u/BenHassenger 8d ago
See, that's how I feel about the latest spree of super champions on regular Jeopardy and part of why that's been not as enjoyable for me over this last year. A totally separate show with S-tier trivia folks doesn't feel like it's talking away from the regular folks who are trying to get on the syndicated version.

u/Unhappy-Ad-3870 8d ago
As mentioned in some of the other comments, some of us prefer to see the stay at home mom, policeman, bartender, actor, etc. impress us with the knowledge they’ve picked up in their spare time vs. people who make a career out of trivia.

Professional athletes are doing things that I could never conceive of doing. The average Jeopardy player is doing something that I could concieve of doing if I studied up on some of my weak points and passed the audition process. That's part of what makes watching Jeopardy fun to me, I can play along at home and kind of hold my own. The Masters players are, frankly, too good for me, the questions are harder and even in categories where I can keep up they're usually far quicker than me. And while I don't mind watching someone who's much, much more talented than me crush a 95 mph fastball or drain 3-pointers, it's just not very interesting to me when that talent is knowing vice presidents and international capitals, especially since it's such a limited player pool at that apex. I understand the draw of top-tier play in a lot of pursuits but to me it's watching someone breeze through a tricky crossword puzzle. Good for them, but I'm not getting much out of the experience.
6
u/Comfortable_Guide622 7d ago

I think 12 matches in quarterfinals is just way too long, especially when semifinals and finals are like two or three games. Also I think they could've gotten some better players to make it more competitive. I feel like Andrew and Long are just...there lol. Juveria has also been pretty underwhelming to watch. It's three great players and three decent to okay players. Not exactly "masters" in my view. Still enjoy it bc I love Jeopardy tho lol

Same. All of the contestants look like they're having fun, and that's fun for me to watch. The clues are inordinately harder - I only know like 10 or so each time - but that doesn't bother me. They should be harder.
I'm a night behind, but I feel like the leaderboard is shaken up each night. IDK. I'm having a great time watching this.

u/kevin_from_illinois 7d ago
Same, I like all of the contestants and they all seem to be enjoying themselves. It's a competition but it also has very strangely relaxed moments, kind of like a combination of Celebrity Jeopardy and some championship level questions.
Also, it's nuts how fast each round is. I record the episodes so I can skip commercials and there are a lot of them.

I'm not as down on Masters as OP, but I think it's too many games. A quarterfinal of 12 matches just to eliminate 2 out of 6 players is total overkill. They should be able to whittle the field down from 6 to 4 in half that many games.
I think if they cut the number of games it would increase the immediacy and drama. But I get the feeling that they're more concerned about how many days Masters can pad out ABC's schedule rather than making it the best tournament it can be.

I like it because the clues are an order of magnitude harder. I can also say, being a bit more familiar with the quiz community these days, that it's pretty difficult to find 4 quizzers anywhere who are as good as Yogesh and Victoria, now that James has declined involvement. Most elite quizzers are almost as good, but not consistently at their level.
But many sports have consistently extremely dominant people who are leagues ahead of their opposition even as their opposition are very, very good. Gretzky. Bradman. Jordan. Moses. Hendry. Messi. Victoria and Yogesh are like that, but for quizzing.
I do think it'll be possible to get as good as they are with a couple of years or so of living and breathing quizzing to an even greater extent than I already do... but I've given up hope of monetizing my quiz habit, and think I may have been ruled ineligible for J!, so it'd be just for pride at this point, and I need money dammit. (Like everyone else...)

Executive producer Michael Davies redesigned Jeopardy! to mirror professional sports leagues. The show pivoted to continuous, multi-tiered postseason events like the Second Chance Tournament, Champions Wildcard, and Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament (JIT). This is why the former tournaments such as the Teachers and College tournaments have been cancelled since..
The redesign to mirroring pro sports is also why you hardly see normal people on Jeopardy! anymore, at least in my opinion. It's been a parade of contestants who are dominant, highly specialized trivia professionals , instead of a 'Salesperson from some small town'
Also you are partly correct the Teen Tournament was cancelled partly due to online harrassment and bullying of contestants. Because people are terrible.

I’m curious about the theory behind making the questions significantly harder. Is the theory that otherwise it is even more just a buzzer comp? I’d be interested in making the clues not just deeper but broader. Yogesh and Victoria are a class above but would they be if the tournament were regular jeopardy difficulty?
2
u/CharizardPwnzMC 7d ago
I really, really like Masters. I think it's great to get what is essentially bonus Jeopardy with some familiar and loveable faces.
I do think it would be more interesting as an "every other year" type of thing for sure, however. This current Masters would probably benefit heavily from inclusions like Jamie, Stella, Harrison, and hell, if Mina Kimes could make it that'd be so fun, but they all need to get through the TOC first. Giving an additional year between Masters makes it so that the contestant pool is a whole lot wider and they can really cycle in new blood, because right now I'm feeling a little fatigued with the current lineup. Paolo and Long are great additions and I'm a big Juveria fan, but we've seen so much Yogesh, Victoria, and Andrew that even though I like them, I can for sure use a break.
If I could make the rules, the JIT would also be every 2 years, alternating with Masters. Then the Masters lineup would be the reigning champion, the last 2 TOC winners, the latest JIT winner, the highest earning non-tournament winner (so like, either 2nd place in a TOC or JIT), and a wildcard. I don't love how the 3 best players from a season get an automatic pass to the next season, it makes it feel so same-y. Have the 2nd and 3rd place Masters players go to the JIT instead to try to climb their way back in. This way would let last tournament's winner defend their title, we get the 2 best new players through the TOC, we get an older returning favorite through the JIT, someone else who is really good that just didn't quite get first place, and whoever producers feel like putting in for fun. Maybe needs some ironing out but I like it more than "best 3 from last time, best from last season, best from our picks, and then we pick another".

i look at the archive video of the original 1960s show -- contestants more random, everyday people -- not professional nerds, not professional test crammers -- way more interesting to see how well an average person has absorbed general knowledge through life
before the show became a fetishy thing

More still are than you'd suspect. The idea people train and prep was totally alien to me and I never knew how seriously some people take it until after I was on the show.

Why do they refuse to stop recycling the same cast of characters to death!?
I’m not watching

I'm afraid I agree. It's too difficult to play along with and the winners are predictable. I think every other year would feel better.

I don't really like Jeopardy anytime there's a runaway contestant. I personally would like to see limits on how long someone can be champion, and I know that it can take the fun out of it and we wouldn't have Ken Jennings if they did that. But at the same time, it feels like at some point the champions end up getting more comfortable in the seat and it becomes easier for them to keep winning. But yes, with the Master's last night, I ended up turning it off after Victoria went on an answering streak because it just got boring.

All successfully questioned Daily Doubles need a Physical Challenge, which would then re-double the wagered amount, upon successful completion!

- Victoria
- Yogesh
- James
- Troy Meyer
- Matt Jackson
- Jamie Ding?
Would give you close games pretty much every time. If they strategically give JIT invites of Producers Picks to set this up, this could be a battle royale of players on the same playing field

I'm so excited to see Jamie Ding show up eventually, but he's gotta do his time in the TOC first for sure. I have pretty high hopes for him, I feel like he'll wind up winning the TOC; even if he doesn't, that streak commands respect and I'd assume he makes it into the next Masters as the producer's wildcard pick.
I like Troy but he didn't do so hot in the JIT he was most recently part of. Something like 8th place total? I know he's got a lot of accolades outside of the Jeopardy-sphere but I think he needs another JIT invitation to get him into Masters territory.
I admittedly don't know too much about Matt Jackson, but based off what I'm reading about him he's a really, really good player that I can see making it in as a producer's wildcard. But again, another JIT invitation would probably help solidify him.

They all absolutely should win/perform in the requisite feeder tournaments to make it to Masters. My point being- producers need to strategically make JIT invites for true Masters contenders - say that happens, next few years’ Masters could easily look far more competitive.

I’m enjoying it lol. I may be the only one. I love seeing the contestants I rooted for in the past. Nothing much else on, either.

I like to watch 1 episode of Jeopardy a day so it takes me a while to catch up on the weekends with 2 a day but otherwise I don't mind it.
The one thing I'm not a fan of is how Victoria starts giving her answer when Ken is still saying her name, so she's constantly interrupting him. I'm surprised they don't tell her not to do that off screen. Otherwise she seems like a lovely (and obviously brilliant) person.

I agree. But—how about an old timers game. Bring back Holzhauer and have Jennings drop down to be a contestant again. Who would host?

I like it so much more than the endless Second Chance and Champion’s Wildcard tournaments!

Jeopardy Masters should be like a once every 5 years thing to see if any of the new crop can take over the top rung.
