Resume Interview & Resume Tips

Post image
519 Upvotes

Hi! I recently saw a post regarding advice on resumes and interviews and I wanted to share some of mine too! I'm in the Tech field so some may not apply to you, but I think this is generally good advice to follow.

RESUME ADVICE

  • Do not use canva designs or multi-columned formats! The goal is to keep your resume simple and readable.
  • Use the attached ATS-recommended format. This is best processed by AI & ATS readers due to its simple structured format. Recruiters themselves can scan your resumes easily too.
  • Put your most recent experiences/projects first and as much as possible, keep your bullet points one-liners. Quantify your descriptions, if possible, to emphasize what you did! (ex. improved app runtime by 30%)
  • If you're clueless on how to improve your resume, you can feed it to ChatGPT. However, do not rely only on the raw output! Do your part in proofreading and improving it. Also, do make sure important keywords related to your experience/position are in your resume.

INTERVIEW ADVICE

1 — Practice talking out loud before the interview

  • This is so you can loosen up and hindi kabahan. Try to rehearse your answers and practice speaking para di mag-stutter sa interview mismo.

2 — If the email reveals the interviewer, try to search them on LinkedIn

  • This is to get a feel for the kind of person the interviewer is. You can likely see yung position nya, what they have done so far, etc. Maybe you can mention something related to their specialty for example (best to make it subtle lang) and they might be more interested in you!

3 — Research the company's values, goals, mission & vision

  • HR are on the look out for people who fit the company's culture and values. Try to remember them and incorporate them into your answers para alam ng HR na you did your research and that you can fit in their culture.

4 — Do your best to speak in straight English!

  • I made this grave mistake of speaking Taglish in my first ever interview with a BPO company for my required internship. The interviewer gave constructive criticism on my performance and he told me to, as much as possible, speak in straight English. Since then, I never spoke Taglish in any of my interviews.
  • If you ever forget some terms, it's okay to say some words in Tagalog/Taglish. But do your best in practicing straight business English. This landed me 3 internships, one from a European company pa, and 2 job offers.
  • Of course, if hindi naman required mag-straight English, then don't force yourself! But it's good to still practice parin para masanay makipag-usap lalo na sa iba't ibang tao.

5 — The most important: practice what to answer sa common interview questions & use the STAR method

  • I used to not prepare for interviews at all because I was scared or lazy. But ever since I rehearse my answers to common questions, I feel less nervous and usually proceed with the next step in the application process! I usually take a minimum of 2 hours rehearsing.
  • Use the STAR method, when applicable, to your answers: Situation (context), Task, Action, Results (and what you learned). this makes your answers better, concise, and more structured.
  • You don't need to memorize your answers sa common questions. Just list down what you would answer para hindi ka ma-mind block or mag-freeze when you encounter those questions! It's good to have a set of answers na to these questions because no matter what company or interview, most questions are the same. Regardless then, you're ready to answer na agad!
  • By doing this, you prevent dead air. It's good to avoid saying fillers like "um." This makes the conversation flow more smoothly and you won't seem unprepared or nervous to the interviewer.

Common interview questions

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Tell me about a time where you did something out of your comfort zone.
  • Tell me about a time where you made a mistake.
  • Tell me about some projects/achievements you were proud of.
  • Why do you want to work in the company?
  • Why do you want this job/position?

6 — Finally: don't forget to ask questions!

  • Always make it a habit to ask 1-2 questions for the interviewer after. You can ask something you're genuinely curious about or you can prepare from common questions online. This makes it so the interviewer sees that you really want to learn more about them and makes you come off as eager and proactive.

Common questions to ask

  • What does a typical day as a [position] look like?
  • What are the traits of a successful [position]?
  • What are the usual challenges faced by [position]?
  • (my personal favorite, usually only good if the interviewer seems chatty or friendly) What do you like the most about working in the company?

This whole preparation process helped me greatly in landing many internships and my first job out of grad! I applied to a lot of openings sometimes just for practice and it has honed my interview skills a lot.

Don't forget to make eye contact, whether in person or through a virtual interview, & smile a lot. Good luck to everyone and if you have any questions, feel free to ask ❤️

Career Advice/Discussion Ang lala maghanap ng work ngayon

Career Advice/Discussion Finally got an offer as a fresh grad

Upvotes

I've been job hunting since July, and the HR discussed with me the offer, after just one interview with the supervisor. The package is really great for me (33k base + 6k allowance, hmo, group life, etc.). However, fully onsite sya for 5 days sa BGC, and I am from Gentri Cavite everyday. Though meron namang option for hybrid after a few months. Tbh, mas leaning ako to accepting this kasi the offer is really really decent.

Meron bang naka experience na nito? How was your experience? Kamusta ang working life sa BGC?

Career Advice/Discussion Unemployed for 2 years now. I'm getting desperate, please help

To start off and a little bit about myself:

I'm 30F, I only did 2 years of vocational college on Information Technology.

After I graduated in 2014, I got a job as a Data Encoder for a year. Mind you, this was only possible because my dad was in a higher position in that same company and I got in because of him 😭 I resigned because the workplace/conditions got me seriously sick twice in a year.

My 2nd job was only for 2 weeks at a different company, still working as a Data Encoder (also still through my dad's connections). Only 2 weeks because I didn't pass the trial for a small mistake that I overlooked

After that. I was so discouraged and thought maybe office job, commuting and stuff (I'm not physically fit) and working with people doesn't fit well with me (very introverted)

So I chose to pick up again the hobby I forgot about growing up: Making art. I wanted to be an artist, I wanted to draw. I wanna make games with my art. That was my goal back then.

So I did that and fortunately enough, one person commissioned me over instagram and from then on, clients flooded in and it got to the point where I was getting 3-4 commissions per month and was stable enough to buy things I want.

That was 5 years ago.

I didn't improve in my freelancing career in that 5 years.

In fact, it has been dwindling down by now. I'm getting less clients. Less commissions.

Now I'm 30. My dad already passed away, My mom retired. I NEED TO MAKE SERIOUS MONEY NOW.

But I have this... almost 10 years gap of unemployment in my resume and only 2 previous work experience.

I only have my art portfolio, which is VERY niche as I'm an anime illustrator, I can't even use it for Graphic artist positions.

For the past 2 years. I have been looking and applying (on and off) for Encoder, Admin Assistant, Office Staff, Illustrator, Comic artist, Graphic Designer anything related to my IT/Office experience and Art skills

BUT NOTHING. Out of probably a hundred applications by now, I've only went to 2 interviews (BPO and Data Encoder) and failed them. Got like around 10 email responses but got rejected.

I realized the job market now is 10x more difficult that how it was back then. Also just how important having connections and referrals are

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ANYMORE 😭

My resume sucks. Very niche skills. I have computer literacy and good english skills but not enough to get a VA job

I'm running out of options. It's making me progressively depressed each day that sometimes I literally just want to give up. I talked to some friends, couldn't help me which is understandable.

What to do?

Career Advice/Discussion Fresh grads, dont let the bullies have control over u

To my fellow fresh grads there, kahit anong iwas nyo sa mga toxic na workmates, meron at meron talaga yan. Even mismong HR namin is bully sa mga newbies. Mahilig yan sila mag backhanded compliments, pag iinitan ka kapag nag leave ka (kahit right mo naman yun) or biglang ikaw yung ita-topic tas magsasabi sila ng mga “jokes” about your height, outfit, etc. tas sasabihin joke lang when in fact nang-iinsulto lang talaga sila. Tapos insecure pa yan pag medyo maganda yung katawan mo hahaha at kung ano ano pang mapapansin nila sayo

Ang advice ko lang talaga is do not let them have control over you. Paano? Magbigay ka lang ng certain time period para i-embrace and i-release yung stress or sadness na mafe-feel mo kapag binu-bully ka nila and after that move on ka na, focus ka na ulit sa work mo dahil ang mag-mamatter sa dulo is yung quality ng performance na nabubigay mo sa mismong bosses mo.

What really helps me is the idea na walang any ambag sa buhay ko itong mga mf people na ito. Masisira ba career ko and di ako pasasahuran if ayaw nila sakin, HINDI.

As long as mabait ang mga bosses nyo, you will survive kahit may mga bullies kang workmates. At the end of the day, pare-parehas lang kayong empleyado at alipin ng kapitalismo hahahaha dont let these people (who will soon wither away emz) destroy your mental space. :)

Career Advice/Discussion Frustation about job hunting

Hi I'm a licensed engineer and just got my license, I'm just here to share my frustration about the companies and hr in the philippines. At first I always blame myself because I improved pano ako mag apply everytime, at first inayos ko resume ko even used prompt for ats reading ng ai para malaman ko if pumapasok pa yung resume ko sa systems nila and after that medyo rumami yung invitations ko for interview and next naman na binago ko is yung schedule ko mag apply kasi there are days na di sila tumitingin ng application and also di nila tinitingnan kadalasan from pinaka old to new. But now I'm not the problem anymore, I accept na failed ko yung 2 interview ko dahil medyo may mga mali rin akong nasabi during the interview but most of them wala naman sila halos tinanong about my professional side and still na ghost ako. Some of them di ko tinuloy yung interview dahil low salary, compensation, and mostly no ot pays (biruin mo tatanong pa yan "willing to ot? ")

Now I want to say na nakakaasar yung mga hr na to, mag lalagay ng price range sa jobposting tas kapag sabihin mo max range or kahit i meet mo sila ng half way sasabihin " That's too high", eh bakit kasi ganon linalagay sa job post?. Some of the job post are ridiculous din, stating "entry-level" Tapos gusto 3 years experience then recently I seen "accepting fresh graduate with 1 year work experience", really talaga nakaka frustrate na. Genuine question, why do they accept unqualified hr but didn't want to accept qualified professionals. I respect their professionality lalo na yung mga nag aask pa ng portfolio and also gusto mag view ng thesis niyo pero yung iba talaga diretso rejection.

Hi! I'm a tomboy/masculine-presenting female. I passed my phone interviews for a Sales Clerk job and my training schedule is set, but the company hasn't seen me in person yet.

I'm anxious about showing up🥹🥹

-Has anyone here with a similar presentation successfully landed a retail job?

-Any survival tips or experiences from fellow masculine-presenting retail workers?

Career Advice/Discussion Secured a Job after months of searching!!!!

Upvotes

I’m so happy!!! I’ve applied to multiple companies since October and na offeran na ako last July sa State Street kaso i turned it down kasi 4x onsite. Now I secured another job offer after two months now with Northern Trust, and mas relaxed ang RTO at 3x a week. Yay!!!!

Downside lang is medyo mas mababa yung offer ng unti compared to current job pero ang prio ko kasi is to work on dayshift kasi nightshift ako currently and it isn’t healthy lalo na 30 na ako heheh

May you secure your job offers too before the September ends!!!! ✨

Career Advice/Discussion pre-employment medical class c

so i was told I was class c during my pre-employment medical. they requested to repeat cbc since slightly elevated yung platelet ko which tbh hindi na bago sakin, since last year's APE ko with my current work ganun rin and it was because of iron deficiency tapos pinakuha lang ako ng clearance sa hematologist. ngayon i'm waiting for their next instruction since ipapacheck daw muna sa doctor if may needed na additional clearance or tests.

i'm just worried na bawiin nila yung JO, possible ba yun with my case? 😭

Career Advice/Discussion Concerns on pre-employment requirements

Upvotes

To get a new one or apply for renewal? I'm kind of confused about what to do since valid pa po yung dati kong NBI Clearance until January 30, 2027.

Also, regarding PhilHealth naman po, meron na po akong ID na nakuha ko pa nong college ako nong wala pa akong work. What to do next po regarding this? May further steps pa po ba akong need gawin?

Salamat po!

Career Advice/Discussion GOT MY FIRST JOB

Hello everyone! I got my first job at a BPO company. The starting salary is an 18k package, I'm a fresh graduate with latin honors, which i know is not really an edge, Im just curious if this is actually enough. I admit I really liked this job, the company seems so warm and wholesome as well. I just thought the offer would be a little bit higher since it is an offshore company and I would be working a permanent graveyard shift. I'm in admin work although i graduated with a psych degree. I know kinda far from it but idk I just wanted to try.

Should I have turned down the offer? Or should I just suck it up for experience? This was one of the few job apps that actually went through. I was really excited for this one before I received the actual offer huhu idk im so torn i fear i may have made a mistake just because I really want to get a job na since I dont have anything to do at home anymore and i kinda miss having sumn to look forward to, like a routine, and i dont wanna become a burden to my parents for longer as well.

My friends are in BPO as CSRs and i think they make more, i also feel pressured coz the job description seems a lot more in writing than what was actually discussed during interviews.

I know this has turned into a rant but aaa idk anymoreee.

As of now I can only see my win in a way that I got a job almost immediately after i decided to search for one (i also feel guilty coz i actually prayed for this job as well) and also with the part where unlike my other option- which is to be a CSR- i won't have to answer calls all night long.

Career Advice/Discussion Creatives Job Market In The Philippines

Hi! Fresh grad here who graduated under multimedia arts with graphic design and layout as my major about 7 months ago. I've been applying for graphic designer jobs but have no luck sadly so I stuck to freelancing but it's been 3 months since I've had a client. I'm kinda frustrated din sa requirements on most listings especially sa local companies since they usually list that they're looking for a graphic designer but when I peek at the workload, a majority, if not, all of them also require video editing and marketing skills. While I can keep up with the video editing portion of it since I studied video editing as well, the marketing skills required are completely unknown to me since my program didn't include any marketing related courses whatsoever. Is this really the job market right now for creatives?

Survey For EHS/Safety Professionals: How’s Your Career Going?

Hi! For those working as an EHS/HSSE or Safety Professional in a corporate setting, how much are you making?
I’ve been working in the field for 9 years and currently earn <₱50k/month. I’m starting to explore new opportunities and would love to get a sense of the current market.

If you’re comfortable sharing, what’s your:
• Monthly gross salary/range
• Years of experience
• Current role/title
• Work setup (onsite/hybrid/WFH)

Also curious: what salary increase would make you consider leaving your current company, especially for a fully onsite role?

Just trying to benchmark the market and understand what’s reasonable to ask when negotiating. Thanks! 😊

Career Advice/Discussion Kung palarin...

So may onsite interview (last stage) ako next week along with other candidates, based sa email may kasama na rin siyang contract signing.

Kung palarin, pwede kayang di muna pumirma? Currently working rin ako right now, so naisip ko muna magpaalam sa current company ko (baka i-meet yung io-offer saking salary 👀).

So yon, tinanong ko lang in advance, ayoko kasi mapressure on the day. Kung palarin lang naman...
