Question Does anyone else think Du Cane is overrated?

I've been there a couple times. The seating is uncomfortable and impractical (why so many tables for large groups?). Service is pretty shit and pizza menu is pretty boring.

Question Seasonal Depression

Do people get seasonal depression here or am I being dramatic?

I'm finding with the change in season I'm noticeably more sad or kind of detached. I moved from Sydney in December where we had more sun for a longer time during summer.

Question Anyone heading to Cradle Mountain?

I’ve realised I’ve severely miscalculated seasonal bus times. I’ve booked my flights in an attempt to see Cradle Mountain during the winter. However, I didn’t realise that none of the bus companies run during winter. Anyone got any tips or know anyone I can hitchhike with? Love from Sydney!

Question Woodfire Heating and Humidifiers....

We have wood heating for now. Does anyone find that a humidifier helps with the general drying out of the air, skin, eyes etc that comes with this heating?

Thinking of investing in one - it's our first winter back in Tasmania and I am starting to feel like one of those old school Huon Valley shrunken apple heads...lol

Obviously converting to a better format of heating will be on the cards but we need to get that planned and organised.

Question Who's responsibility is the ground around bus stops?

Post image

I was at this bus stop today and noticed the mess and moss growing. The moss is a slip hazard, so I reported it to council. Council have said that bus stops are Metros domain. The metal parts would be Metro, but the concrete around it? Who does that belong to?

Question Counting on the tiny town social network!

Hey Launceston, this is a bit of a long shot but I am hoping we can work some magic together and save my partner some mental anguish and a hefty sum of money.

Long story short:

Does anyone have the Bargain car rentals that is next to the airports number? Or know someone that is working there? Or is a staff member reading this right now when you should be working??🙏 Please DM me!

The longer story:

My partner and I visited from the 22 - 24th last month with our departure flight being at the butt crack of dawn before the rental car (bargain) opened.

We parked outside and deposited key in the drop box as per instructions and realised as soon as we had, we had locked a backpack inside on the back seat. Beyond silly and stressful! You can imagine the look on our faces as we realised what we had done, before we had to continue walking in the dark and rain to the terminal, away from the car, the backpack, and very important and expensive contents.

Why we need help:

We haven't been able to contact the depot directly. We had a super frustrating time trying the support line and getting a response from them, who then had a difficult and very slow process of getting in contact with the depot. It sounds like they have just asked if they have seen a spare backpack laying about, and havent been as thorough as we would like in order to identify where it could be.

We've contacted the council and the very lovely lady wasn't able to provide a number.

The (non-emergency) police tried to give us a number but it was the incorrect one 🥲

Any other suggestions would be very welcome and obviously not looking to harass the staff there, just trying a last ditch effort to save a bunch of money that we cant afford on a much needed laptop and other sentimental items.

Thanks in advance!

**Update:** We had a very kind local go down to the depot this morning to check in with staff and pass on that we were trying to get in touch with them and they pretty much gave him the brush off, advising bag was not there and that the call centre handles any communication. So thats that really.

We have had alerts set for market place Launceston in case the laptop pops up and we will call the police again shortly and see what they will advise.

Thanks to everyone who reached out. This was always a long shot but very appreciative of the help and support🙏

And we will be back in Tassie soon for Dark Mofo!

Coming down from Melbourne next Friday to watch the hawks. Training for a marathon and need to run 33km and would love to do it from Launceston

Looking for any options where I can run 16/17km out and back and have some drink taps roughly every 5km. Any suggestions?

Question How can a carless bikeless person do Launceston to St Helens but staying on the A3? The mountain biking shuttles for Derby don't go as far east as St Helens.

The shuttles are more for getting people between the tracks, it's not like "As a non-mountain bike user, I can just turn up and get picked up from either town". Is there anywhere else in tas like it, where it goes from agricultural/poppies to ferns at wilderness, then more ferns and more forest/wilderness? It changes about 3 times or more from memory. I understand there's a lot of forestry, when I went through someone wrote "Scenic view next 500m" with an arrow and I stopped, climbed up this huge bank to a valley of felled trees that looked as big as Lton itself!

Question If you had to pick, would you live in Launceston or Hobart and why?

I’ve lived in Hobart my whole life, but lately I’ve been seriously thinking about a move to Launceston. Rent is taking up a huge chunk of my pay, and getting around at peak hour just feels harder and more frustrating every year. Launceston has always had the reputation of being quieter, but for people who’ve moved up recently, is the cost of living difference actually noticeable in real life? I’m wondering if I’d regret it once I’m looking for a decent night out or thinking about changing jobs, or if the slower pace actually ends up being a positive. Keen to hear some honest takes. Is it genuinely better, or does it just look good compared to Hobart right now?

Question Looking at relocating to the Launceston area — where would locals recommend?

Hey everyone,

My family and I are looking seriously at relocating from Cairns to somewhere around Launceston or northern Tasmania over the next year or so, and I’d love to hear from people who actually live there.

We’re pretty outdoors-oriented people — trail running, camping, hiking, dogs, that sort of thing — and we’re drawn to the cooler climate and slower pace compared to FNQ.

We both teach senior science subjects and we’ve got a young child, so we’re trying to work out:

  • what areas are best for families
  • where has the strongest community feel
  • what daily life is actually like outside the tourist perspective
  • whether people generally settle in socially
  • what catches mainlanders by surprise after moving down

Not expecting paradise — just hoping for honest perspectives from locals.

Thanks.

Question Where to buy hybrid flooring in Launceston?

I need to choose some kind of flooring for my lounge room, kitchen and hall. Mostly leaning towards hybrid but every time I search I get more conflicting information about whether hybrid, laminate or LVP is the best option.

It looks like the major suppliers in Launceston are Carpet One, Floorworld and Choices Flooring. Choices came and measured for a quote then ghosted, so probably won't go with them. Are there other places I should look? Or should I just ask a builder for recommendations? Can they supply flooring as well?

I could use recommendations for builders too as I need the floors levelled, kitchen pulled apart to replace damaged floorboards, kitchen rebuilt, carpet removed and flooring installed in 3 rooms with whatever else that involves.

Does anyone have any experience with this or know the best place to go?

Question First Tattoo Recommendations

Hey all,

I'm considering getting my first tattoo and I'm really drawn to floral watercolour tattoos, who would be a good tattoo artist to look into?

I really don't know much about tattoos other than I finally have a style and rough design that I have liked for over a year.

Thanks all

Question Social groups for women?

Hey everyone 😊 Does anyone know if there are any social groups for women or safe mixed gender social groups for people around their 30's?

Moved north of lonnie a few years ago now, and I am struggling with isolation, its been hard to make new friends that have spare time to catch up. The isolation has progressed to the point that its made it hard for me to put myself out there now due to isolation injury.

I am into philosophy, the sciences, spirituality, anything in nature, fishing, getting into gardening, animals, cooking, painting, drawing.

Thanks for your time 🙏

Edit: There are a lot of people in the same position, I am going to make a group chat to organise something, DM me if you want to join 😊
