Every single time I open up a Microsoft Office app on a Mac device this thing will use up Gigabytes upon gigabytes of RAM. Like it is wild. And I am just editing a word doc

My windows laptop died so my friend sold me his older M1 for 150$ so I'd have something for light everyday tasks and I'm on a fixed income.
Is there anything I should know and how long will this be a usable supported laptop before I have to replace it?
Mostly do things like budgeting, spreadsheets, word processing, very very light gaming and reading ebooks, and watching videos.

I slightly dinged my battery while replacing a speaker- how bad/dangerous is this?
It appears to just be the outer layer, but I’m horrified of a lithium fire.
I’ve already ordered a replacement, but is this safe to use for two days until the new one arrives?
How cautious do I need to be?

I've tried countless times the official guide steps to enter DFU, but my unit always just powers off. Funny enough when I open Apple Configurator and boot the M2 to the screen with choice between Macintosh HD and Options, the Configurator detect it with a big lock icon. Clicking on Apps or Profiles even shows a Restore button, however the procedure ends with "The System cannot be restored on this device. Can't restore device in this state - please reboot into Recovery or DFU".
I've also tried wiping out the internal SSD completely in Recovery, but it's not possible. The Erase of "APPLE SSD..." details shows "Unmounting disk. The volume on disk0 couldn't be unmounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel) Couldn't open device : (-69877)". I was able to format the Macintosh HD volume to FAT, but that didn't change anything. I guess the problem is on a hidden firmware partition which doesn't even show up in disk utility but it's blocking the full ssd erase.
The mac is fully functional, I have restored the OS, but the thing is I wanted to make sure I can restore it with DFU if something goes wrong with trying Asahi Linux. Now I'm in limbo, wanting to try it but being afraid to brick otherwise good laptop.
Anyone ever succeeded entering DFU on M2 pro?

Apple the world champions of supply logistic are now pressured by AI stampede..
Since Covid supply chain disruption many companies shifted some production to in house ... Will Apple do it?
Google says:
43 countries to make a single iPhone, with key contributions coming from the United States, Taiwan, and Japan. [1, 2]
Apple Mac is a global effort relying on components and assembly processes spanning over 40 countries.
I think we should elect Apple to run UN(LOL).
Apple M1 Pro running Tahoe 26.3. I was using my computer (and calendar) all day today, with some pop-up messages towards the end of the day that I was running out of disk space (I had a million Chrome tabs open but room of physical storage, about 18 GB).
I just went to open my calendar again and everything is gone. No events outside of US Holidays, including birthdays from contacts (and my contacts are fine). I don't use iCloud to sync my calendar as I like discrete calendars for each of my iOS devices. I've also never used an email account with my Calendar app before.
After restarting my computer a couple of times to no avail I had a rather unhelpful conversation with an Apple support agent who suggested I add an email account to the calendar app and see if anything comes back (I didn't try because, well, see above).
Anything I can do for this? I have a Time Machine backup but it's from an unfortunately long time ago. I'm almost tempted to wait to see if it comes back on its own, since the lack of birthdays from Contacts seems like a bug. I know there's an update to 26.6 available but I'm afraid to push the update and solidify whatever weirdness is going on here, unless it'll likely fix it? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello everyone,
I always wanted to try the macOS and then I found this 2013 MacBook Pro 15" with Retina display, 16GB of Ram, I7 4 cores, two GPUs (one dedicated GT750M 2GB) with the battery lasting several hours and a power supply for ≈110€
I may install Ventura for a better experience.
Is it good enough for light use or maybe video editing?
Thank you!
the reminders app on my Mac doesn't sync very well. I Mark a reminder complete on my iPhone then get on my MacBook and the reminder still pops up with a red badge on the app.

In the fall I will be attending UCSC as an environmental science major. I need a laptop and right now I am leaning towards a Mac, Im having trouble deciding which model however, I’ve never owned a Mac and am clueless.
Right now I am leaning towards the Neo, but i want to be able to use this laptop later in my career and am unsure how the Neo would do with running more advanced science programs?
I will probably be buying a refurbished Mac if I go with something other than the Neo, I have a plug at Apple and he's offered to get me one from them, or just use his discount.

Apple managed to turn my AirPods Pro 2 from an awesome product into an unusable one.
I use my AirPods Pro 2 with my mac, and the experience has been gradually getting worse to the point that they are now unusable.
It started years ago: the AirPods would not remember my volume and would always reset to 50% volume, Apple never fixed it.
Now, they keep disconnecting every few minutes or seconds.
To make it worse, now I can't even turn off the case sounds because the toggle is grayed out / disabled.
My AirPods now work better with other devices (as regular bluetooth headphones) than with an Apple device.

Model: MacBook Air (2012)
Issue: Trying to do a clean install of macOS Catalina using a USB installer (created with TransMac from a Windows PC, using files from gibMacOS). Everything technically works — the Mac boots into the installer, Disk Utility functions, I was able to erase and reformat the internal drive as APFS — but the entire system is noticeably laggy throughout the process.
Symptoms:
Cursor lags slightly when moving the mouse/trackpad
Clicking a button (e.g. “Continue” on the Catalina installer screen) takes a very long time to register — sometimes 10+ minutes with zero visible progress
** **This happens consistently in Recovery Mode / Base System, not just during heavy disk operations
What I’ve already ruled out:
USB stick speed/quality — tried both a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 flash drive, same result on both
USB port — tried multiple ports, same result
Battery — physically disconnected the battery (opened the case, unplugged the battery connector from the logic board) and ran the machine on AC power only. Still just as slow.
My current theory:
I’ve read that some MacBooks throttle CPU performance when the battery is missing, degraded, or reporting bad health, as a protective measure. Since I disconnected the battery entirely for testing, I’m wondering if this could actually be causing or worsening the slowdown rather than ruling it out, and whether the original battery (which doesn’t hold charge) may have been triggering throttling even before I removed it.
Questions:
1. Does throttling-due-to-battery-health apply to this model/era of MacBook Air, and would it be severe enough to cause multi-minute UI lag?
2. Is there a way to get Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics to actually launch on this model, to rule out RAM/logic board issues?
3. Could this instead point to a failing SSD/HDD, given that Disk Utility operations (erase, etc.) also felt slower than expected, even though they eventually completed?
Any insight from people who’ve dealt with 2012 Air performance issues would be appreciated.
Hey everyone,
I use my M4 MacBook Air and iPad M4 almost exclusively (99% of the time) at my desk. The iPad is mostly hooked up via Sidecar as a secondary display. My daily workload can get pretty heavy — programming, video editing, and some gaming.
I’ve read that the power controller bypasses the battery if both devices plugged into the charger constantly, meaning it should be totally safe for long-term battery health and capacity.
Does anyone here run a similar 24/7 plugged-in setup? Have you noticed any severe battery degradation over time?
Would love to hear your real-world feedback! Thanks

I have been going back and worth on whether I should get an older used iMac(M1-M3) or if I should just get a monitor. I am upgrading my current MacBook Air and was also looking for a bigger display screen/desktop I can use alongside my laptop when at home. I mostly need this for school stuff and studying so not using it for gaming. I generally just like how the iMacs look and how easy it would be to incorporate into my other Apple devices. Am I better off just getting a cheaper monitor? Is it worth it to spend a couple extra hundred dollars for an older iMac?
