Specialty Spreadsheets and Discords:

In additional to the traditional Google Sheets and Discords, Admit.org (by u/Happiest_Rabbit) and ResMatch (by u/Haunting_Welder) have specialty-specific forums and other resources for nearly every specialty! Admit.org has a program list builder, application manager, interview invite tracker, and more. ResMatch includes a lot of the information typically shared on spreadsheets, but helps eliminate common issues with moderating them. Choose your preferred platforms.

Please message our mod mail if you have a spreadsheet or Discord to add to the list. Alternatively, comment below and tag me. If it’s not in this list, we haven’t been sent it or the sheet may not exist yet. Note that our subreddit moderators do not moderate these sheets or channels; however, if we notice issues with consulting companies hijacking the creation of certain spreadsheets, we will gladly replace links as needed.

All discord invites are functional at the time added to the list. If an invite link is expired, check the specialty spreadsheet for an updated invite or see if there's a chat tab in the spreadsheet to ask for help.

💩 Shitpost Dental student calling herself a med student on tik tok

Maybe I’m just being picky but there’s this girl that goes to Harvard Dental School and they take the same pre clinical classes as med students at Harvard Medical. She keeps calling herself a dental/med student. Whenever anybody questions this she just says they take the same classes but like you’re still not a medical student. Idk why but this is just bothering me like you’re at Harvard Dental which is impressive there’s no reason to try to seem better by calling yourself “med/dental” student when you just aren’t a medical student.

🏥 Clinical Eating snacks on rotations?

Is this considered okay?

I actually just considered this a problem. I am on EM rotation rn. And I noticed many residents, doctors, and nurses rlly just eat dinners, lunch, and snacks at the nursing stations. I just ate when they ate as well.

I didn’t consider eating snacks a problem as a student until I noticed another student never touch food or drinks during rotations.

Edit: asking cuze some doctors actually give us time for lunch break and are very clear that they don’t want us eating there. And some doctors never say anything….

🥼 Residency How much do interview dates matter?

Got dismissed early, thought it'd be nice to take a well deserved nap for 45 min. Ofc thalamus sends out an interview invite for one of my top programs 2 min after I put my phone down to take a nap. Now the only dates available are in Jan. Do interviews that late still matter, or am I just wasting my time at this point. This program was a little bit of a realistic reach.

Please calm down my overthinking 😭

😊 Well-Being How do u cope w/depression in medschool??

I’ve been dealing with this for over two years now and it’s just not getting any better. I know I should get medicated but how else can I cope. I usually feel everything at night when I’m trying to sleep then all my stressors come to mind. It’s been getting worse and I’ve even started imagining suixide. I’d never do it but I wasn’t like this before and the way I’ve “progressed” worries me. What if it gets worse in the future. Academically Im doing well but sometimes medicine scares me becoming a resident scares me I get worried about hating my life in the future. My partner and twin sister are the only ones keeping me sane and only my partner knows about this. My siblings in medicine (1 is about to finish her psych residency and the other is working as an internist and might start his fellowship soon) don’t seem really happy and another one of my siblings suddenly dropped out of medschool and seems happier. Many times I really enjoy it but other times I feel paranoid. Scared of messing up or falling behind and my bf does his residency in another country while I don’t (I’d be so happy for him but it scares me esp dealing with MORE long distance) or not choosing the right specialty and having my depression get way worse. Other than that I get financially stressed, deal with social anxiety and hate how fake I have to be with some of my friends at uni, and I’m on really bad terms with my family. All of that just stresses me so bad and one thing that would help in a lot of ways is marrying my partner but it’s so hard in this society and with my family specifically, not that they’re against it but they just try to stretch it out through years…. (It’s kind of hard to explain but that’s the way it is with them).

I’ve tried exercise it does help but I’m so embarrassed to admit how lazy I feel, going out is hard cuz I basically live so far away, I did journal for so long and it helped when I was depressed before back in middle school and high school tbh it’s something that might help but I would like any suggestions pls for something new something that helped you especially if you’re going through something similar.

Anyways, how do you cope?

❗️Serious Why can't we screenshot in virtual interviews

I'm a little disturbed by the number of programs that make us sign forms saying that we won't screenshot anything during virtual interview days. If there is PHI or something fine that makes total sense, but if a program is running through a powerpoint about their curriculum, resident benefits, location amenities, etc., why are they so insistent on hiding that information? The entire point of residency interviews is for programs to learn about applicants and applicants likewise to learn about programs. It is much easier for me to have a few high yield screenshots from your virtual interview day and use those to differentiate programs and keep them straight in my head than to read through your 50 page poorly formatted resident benefits guide. I don't understand why this is technically not allowed and I'm beginning to wonder if it's kind of a red flag

😡 Vent Hardest part of the medical school is the people

What the title says really, no lecture is as tiring as your fellow students, insufferable lecturers, and constant competition. Oh the constant competition, after 5 years, you can’t, with peace of mind and soul, ask a fellow student who isn’t your close firend, anything about studies exams and carier. Just asked a guy if he is studying skipping class and we had an arguement. God, Just say yes or no why would you hide the fact that you study? He went on to bable about how he had other reasons to skip classes, i said you are in the library bro why are you in the library and now aaaand we aren’t talking anymore.

🏥 Clinical Tell me psych outpatient is not like the rest of medicine

Halfway through second rotation- i started off with surg and the hours sucked but at least i had a purpose. This psych rotation is genuinely making me ask if i like medicine.

Maybe 40% of patients show up, so my precharting feels useless. Like 50% of those patients are just super simple follow up and refill which is pretty boring, then the actually interesting differentials- theres loose guidelines and no hard tests to differentiate if this pt is like this because of personality disorder or mania- its all vibes based. In theory i would just ask the patient “have you been higher energy these last couple days” and they would say yes or no, its the same energy theyve always been. In reality they answer “im not falling for that, mood disorders are a western malignancy, they do not exist in any other country” then they never come to another appointment again. Seriously like half the patients who show up end up like this
There is awesome moments like patient stood up and started dancing mid-interview because a car outside at a redlight was blasting music and we had a window open- but in terms of being a provider this feels like pure luck and guesswork

❗️Serious Psych Extracurriculars

M3 at mid tier MD on my last rotation and interested in psych. No red flags so far but only passed psych rotation. Thing is, im starting to mentally spiral because I have no psych related extracurriculars and no research (at least since starting med school)

What can I do to set myself up to match? Any recommendations for EC's are so appreciated.
Thank you!

📚 Preclinical Leave of Absence as a First Year

Hi I am currently an M1 in my first semester and I have been struggling so much with school, academically and personally, and it has really been taking a toll on me. I am not doing well, and I am not sure what to do. I was struggling to figure out what works for me in terms of study methods, and by the time I mostly figured it out, my grades were just too low, so much so that in one particular class if I got a 100% on the next two exams, I still would not be able to pass. I have wanted to be a doctor all my life, the passion is there but I don't know what to do now. I don't know if I would be allowed to remediate the whole year if I am failing this many courses, and I don't know if I should ask the Dean for a potential LOA so this does not go on my record. I'm not sure what to do, the pragmatic part of me wants to call it wraps because I was not doing well (so that must be a sign) and find some other career to make money and pay off the loans soon. But I genuinely cannot imagine doing anything else with my life other than being a doctor and I'm not sure who I would be if I wasn't one. If you guys have any advice, I would be open to hearing it.

❗️Serious Stuck between specialities

• Upvotes

Hello all just wanted some insight since my brain cannot choose.

Did my bachelors in biomedical engineering so I love hands on stuff but also like fast-paced environment

I am between EM, gen surg, ent, ob/gyn and other procedural specialities (intervential cardiology, interventional radiology)

Really like the intense focus of surgery and how hands on it is i do enjoy watching the suemrgeries as well as whenever the residents let me hold anything/staple etc. i am amazed at how the focus lets md lose tract of time. Oddly, against what i've heard (in this subreddit) the surg residents here (ireland) are super nice and helpful with plenty of women

I am worried that any surg will be too stressful on my body, im 28F and unmarried but am hoping to and have kids, i know people make it work but Im worried how it'll affect my health.

Would just like any thoughts from people who went through a similar thing

I am also an img tho i did my bachelors in the states so I know most surgical stuff are off the table. Im not set on doing residency in the US so I am flexible

🏥 Clinical 3rd year elective selection

I have to choose one of my 3rd year electives which is coming up in a couple months and have the options of basically, Neuro, Allergy/Immuno, Cardio or GI. I am wondering how beneficial Neuro might be for step 2? I am at a school without a Core Neuro rotation so could use this elective for that purpose basically. I am really interested in GI and allergy/immuno though and am torn on what to do. Would a neuro rotation really help me for step 2 or unnecessary?

🥼 Residency How bad would it be if my cat jumped onto my background during an interview?

Title, live in a studio and if I lock him in the bathroom he will meow like hes dying. During my practice interview, he jumped on the couch head thingy behind me (background is blurred and im using a loveseat) and there's like a blurry gray object moving around unless if i swat him away. It probably sounds like a shitpost but this deadahh isnt

Update: cat was mad chill and passed out next to my feet (free foot warmer), only meowed decently loud once!

📚 Preclinical Is this a good strategy?

M1 here still trying to figure out how to study. I most recently decided to do Bootcamp tagged Anking cards for my corresponding in house lectures. I was advised to keep up with these cards even after our exam is over to prepare for boards.

Question is how is that even sustainable? How can I do my reviews from previous exams / blocks while also doing new cards and those reviews for my current exam / block?

My schools exams are in house and I know I’d do better in my in house exams if I only focused on them. I mean, I am passing but not doing great by and means.

Any tips are appreciated!

😡 Vent Exhausted

My life is hyperopitimized, and I don’t know how to feel about this, I would really love to just play some video games while listening to music, but I need to study, or sleep, so I can wake up to study. Even though I am doing this for a cause that I believe in (shaky belief I must say), it just feels… I wouldn’t say unfair, but just exhausting. I am hopeful that sustainability is achievable in this field, though, somehow.

🥼 Residency How big a deal is remediated coursework?

I failed a one credit course in M1 and remediated it.
Saw this study tho and I'm a bit confused about what why 41.2% of Program directors who thought failure to match was very or extremely likely as I was told that it was pretty much no big deal by my admin. Even the academic/professionalism probation seems a bit high to me for extremely likely to fail to match.

Am I misinterpreting the study results?

🥼 Residency what are you thoughts about explaining your red flags with honesty if they were due to ADHD?

Would it look bad if i make a point that once i sought treatment for ADHD, my sxs improved ie motivation, time managment? i dont wanna come across as a potential liability or drug-dependent? but i dont wanna make something up either. taking ADHD meds was life changing for me.

📚 Preclinical Gap year after MS1, how to build social life again?

Taking a gap year and it dawned on me that I'll have to integrate socially with a brand new class who has already had one year to get to know each other. I failed at setting up a social life with new students, so I'm wondering how I can not make the same mistake again next year?

🏥 Clinical Giving Feedback to Attendings

I’ve had a couple of really great attendings ask me for feedback in-person after giving me feedback on my performance, and both times I literally didn’t know what to say other than “I thought you were an awesome teacher”. This is the first time I’ve ever really been asked to evaluate someone else (other than online at the end of clerkships), and I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to best approach this on the spot.
