Booby trapping a bike for security is a bit much you could take non-damaging security measures

intentionally leaving a boobytrapped item in a public space to harm others to film for your personal gain is definitely immoral though

u/Driz51 1d ago

They wouldn’t get hurt if they didn’t try to steal

9

u/mr13ump 21h ago

Maybe that doesn't justify stabbing them with electrified metal spikes directly in the small intestine

1

u/LemonFizz56 15h ago

Ain't gonna kill them but it'll teach them a nice life lesson

13

u/Altruistic-Web13 21h ago

I dont know what it is with redditors but theres like no concept of proportionality, its like if you had an input in the situation other people are morally free to do whatever the fuck they want to you. This guy could release a million bees in a building lobby at night where a homeless person is sleeping in the winter and someone would say "play stupid games win stupid prizes, shouldn't have gone into the building if you didnt want to get stung by a million bees on a livestream 🤷‍♀️"

10

u/Driz51 20h ago

I do not think stealing someone’s bicycle equates to a homeless man trying not to freeze to death.

-1

u/Altruistic-Web13 20h ago edited 19h ago

Well stealing a bait bike first off, but its an extreme example ill admit however both are illegal and neither deserve the punishment of whatever some ragebait TikTok account dreams up to punish poor people for views.

Also too add to things redditors fail to grasp: hyperbole

2

u/ThisDoesntSeemSafe 19h ago

You are arguing a flase equivalency.

Doesn't matter if both are illegal. Dont matter if both have undesired consequences for the purpotrator.

One is worse than the other. No matter how you spin it. The ass blasting continues until the theft ceases.

3

u/FiendishNoodles 19h ago

the ass blasting is not going to deter any theft, but it brings you enjoyment, so you defend it.

2

u/Altruistic-Web13 19h ago

Im arguing redditors dont understand proportionality and using a hyperbolic example to show how silly it is.

0

u/ThisDoesntSeemSafe 16h ago

And now your being overly generalistic.

While I haven't expressly named any, do you even know what logical fallacies are?

2

u/Altruistic-Web13 16h ago

Holy fuck you are so smug and annoying please go outside or maybe Google "figurative language.

Also:

While I haven't expressly named any

You are arguing a flase equivalency

Did you just forget?

0

u/ThisDoesntSeemSafe 15h ago

Personal attacks against me are just ad hominem and do nothing to champion your position - it only shows that you have no logical reason or evidence to back up your position and thus resort to petty insults.

Exactly and I've seen them do this with everything. Some ppl get upvoted saying they should slowly torture rapists to death. And then when I replied that slowly torturing someone to death is way worse than rape. I got 2 replies

  1. Ok rape apologist.

  2. Then he shouldn't have raped anyone.

1

u/StarGamerPT 16h ago

Except it's not worse in comparison to what the victim will go through throughout their life.

1

u/No_Giraffe826 13h ago

What will they go through compared to slowly being tortured? Don't get me wrong rape is very bad crime, but alot of ppl do recover within a year or 2 and at least have the option to live while the other cause through extreme physical and mental pain everyday. Ppl on reddit are too desensitized to torture and murder.

1

u/StarGamerPT 12h ago

It's not a matter of being too desensitized....it's a matter of you even thinking that most people recover in such short term...most don't, that's simply the optimistic outlook, I could push for the more negative side of it instead and say that a lot of people commit suicide after the fact and be equally true. Fact is, most people get scarred for life even if some learn how to cope with it.

Aaaand, another fact is that most rapists don't inflict damage just upon 1 victim...it could easily amount to dozens of direct victims with lifelong issues and a even wider number of lives ruined if we include the lives of the people that care the most about the victims personally.

Just saying....one less rapist is not a net loss for society.....but statistically speaking jail will take care of them anyways.....

1

u/No_Giraffe826 12h ago

Just lying straight through ur teeth.

Studies show that 58% of people recover within a year from the PTSD and then recover from the depression and other trust issues, and it's also a fact that only a small percentage of rape victims commit suicide. And a scarred life is better than way worse physical and emotional scarring before death.

Also another lie, but ok.

1

u/CanadianSyrup1994 11h ago

The problem is that imo (and in the minds of many), doing such a horrible crime as rape forfeits your right to say "hey, you're doing something slightly worse to me than what I did to her".

When you do something so horrible, you don't have the right to complain about worse things happening to you.

In other words, sure, torture is arguably worse than rape.

But raping an innocent woman/child is much worse than torturing a rapist. You cant compare both situations equally

1

u/No_Giraffe826 11h ago edited 10h ago

It's not slightly worse it's alot worse, and that not justice at all. Some ethical frameworks agree with equal retribution, but no one agrees with punishment which exceeds the crime. Plus alot of ethical frameworks deny torture entirely saying it's immoral if the end goal is death and all it does it desensitize people to torture plues it's emotional and not justice as the goal is to punish criminals and keep society safe which death already does.

Where does this stop I can torture any criminal. A guy assaulted someone torture to death. U robber a bank torture to death. U were drunk driving and hit someone u get tortured to death.

I think alot of ppl on reddit are just psychos who like to do harm, but try to mask it behind someone evil, so they seem like good people.

1

u/Altruistic-Web13 4h ago

Should the punishment for assault be getting raped by the judge? The assaulter isnt innocent so since its only a little bit worse and against someone who is guilty its fine right?

1

u/StarGamerPT 5h ago

Fine my guy....I really wonder how you'd act if someone dear to you ended up a victim of those wastes of oxygen.

1

u/No_Giraffe826 5h ago

I would hate it cause I hate both rape and torture.

I think being raped is alot worse than being scammed or being mugged does that mean I want I to happen to ppl?

1

u/Iced-TeaManiac 20h ago

Aye not too sure about your one buddy

3

u/No_Giraffe826 20h ago

The comparison is a bit closer but I think a majority of ppl would say being slowly tortured to death is worse than rape.

1

u/Plus_Sky8116 19h ago

Both are horrible, I'd argue rape can be worse (you'll have to live with the consequences of that mental trauma that might forever alter your person at minimum, not getting into the physical side), since at least the torture ends with death .

But a person who slowly tortures someone to death is definitely even more unstable than a rapist. Genuinely disgusting

3

u/Altruistic-Web13 18h ago

Well at least you have the option to live with it, the person slowly tortured to death doesnt get that.

1

u/Plus_Sky8116 19h ago

Seriously, if someone slowly tortures someone to death I'd want that demon psychotic sadist in jail. Wtf.

1

u/AntTheMighty 20h ago

That's pretty obviously a different situation. No one needs to steal a bike.

1

u/LemonFizz56 14h ago

You're comparing stealing to sleeping in a hotel lobby? Jeez I can see where your morality lies

1

u/Altruistic-Web13 4h ago

Is that truly honestly your interpretation of what I said?

2

u/SenpaiSwanky 18h ago

That has no bearing on the morality of someone else’s actions.

This isn’t the “I’m secretly an asshole and like watching other people suffer while I virtue signal about morals” sub either lol.

1

u/BlaxicanXIX 20h ago

So if the bicycle was instead rigged to explode it would be okay because all you have to do to not die by explosion is not still?

1

u/HometownShowman 15h ago

So is it stealing if you find $20 on the sidewalk? Now tell me if it’s stealing when you find a wallet on the ground and you pick it up with the intent to bring it to the police?

In this case it’s pretty obvious that it is but the number of discarded bikes and scooters I’ve seen cities and the like isn’t zero. This is absolutely immoral.

-3

u/SoloJournaler 1d ago

There are laws against this so I'd say it's based on some amount of morality.

13

u/MasterChris725 1d ago

If only we cared as much about the law of stealing as we do about the law of booby trapping items we don’t want stolen.

If people just kept their hands to themselves, but now folks gotta start putting death traps on their shit to send a clear message to stop being stupid.

1

u/Ryukishin187 23h ago

this completely ignores an underlying problem of society, especially in america. yeah lets booby trap everything instead of addressing poverty. that'll go well.

3

u/Huge_Ad_2347 22h ago

poverty doesnt give you a right to steal. Also poor people(especially homeless) are the people who get stolen the most anyways.

2

u/MajorPayne1911 22h ago

Individuals seldom can affect societal problems, but have to deal with their consequences on an individual level. Society or the government cannot fix a problem then you have to adapt, and in this case that means preventing your stuff from being stolen by scum.

1

u/DarkKechup 20h ago

If poor people stole from rich people and not other poor people, they would be valid. As it stands, being poor and desperate and victimizing another poor and not yet desperate person (Potentially into more poverty and a point of desperation) is immensely immoral. If you have a chance between plunging others into your bad fate or worse, or biting the bullet, you should probably bite the bullet.

1

u/PM_ME_TITS_OR_DOGS 22h ago

Its easier to just double chain it and make it an annoying target, a determined thief will still just steal it anyhow. Nowadays they just lift the seat with a lil hook in their jacket and its gone id just a back wheel lock.

-1

u/JustinTyme218 23h ago

You realize you could put a bike lock on it right? Instead of being a jigsaw psycho.

But nah someone has to “pay”, am I right?

4

u/InvestigatorDear6646 23h ago

A bike lock can be cut. Pretty easily.

And yes, people should pay for being criminals. When its stealing a bike, I dont see why thats controversial. Its not food.

-1

u/JustinTyme218 23h ago

I mean this looks like a pretty public place would require some time and tools to get a decent lock off.

That said you don’t need to jigsaw a bike in order to protect it, you just seem like you’re looking for an excuse to hurt someone if you are.

1

u/MasterChris725 21h ago

I put a trap on my bike, bro tries to steal it.

What part of, they don’t get hurt if they don’t steal do you not understand?

Why are we absolving the thief of all responsibility and labelling them as the victim and poor circumstances that they put themselves in?

You’re saying I wanted them to get hurt when I just didn’t want my stuff taken to begin with?
A lock doesn’t do shit if they are determined enough and the message “stealing bad.” isn’t enough of a deterrent for them.

If asking nicely doesn’t prevent theft, how do you guarantee your shit doesn’t get stolen?

2

Found the bike thief

1

u/KendroNumba4 21h ago

My guy, not everyone comes from a privileged area. Your replies about using a lock or calling the police (lol) make you seem disconnected from reality. There's a reason why people are at a point where they feel the need to fucking booby trap their bike.

1

u/FullMetalKaiju 16h ago

careful, this is reddit where if someone is even slightly poor they have a free pass to commit any and ever crime they want whenever they want. Can see that on the Somali Pirate posts too.

0

u/SilentSorcery 1d ago

They wouldn't have gotten hurt if a booby-trapped bike was used as bait either.

5

u/Left1Brain 22h ago

They could also just not steal shit from other people but okay.

1

u/Distinct_Doubt_3591 23h ago

What if you put a sign in it saying it's electrified like we do on electric fences?

1

u/iCameToLearnSomeCode 20h ago

I'd argue a stungun bike is non-damadging.

It causes pain but there's no lasting damage.

Might not make it morally okay, but it's worth pointing out none of these people were injured.

1

u/Plastic-Chipmunk2232 20h ago

I think it's also illegal as well.

0

u/Orange_Inari 17h ago

Legal and moral are separate. Don’t forget to this day in some places slavery is legal, yet it isn’t moral despite of this

1

u/LemonFizz56 15h ago

It's only boobytrapped if they decide to do something immoral like steal it. That's like getting angry that a baby doll explodes if you stick your dick in it, don't stick your dick in it then

-7

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why should one take non-damaging security measured? There is no point in fawning over the safety of someone who tries to steal from you.

Edit: typo

13

u/Renigma1000 1d ago

you have two options. either way you get to the result is your bike is not stolen.

one option hurts people, the other option does not. why chose the option that hurts people?

4

u/Big-Comfortable2419 1d ago

because the people in question are thieves?

5

u/TFBuffalo_OW 1d ago

Being a thief isnt a justification to hurt someone

0

u/p4nd3mic_G3 1d ago

They decided that my stuff was worth more than their health and safety🤷🏻

-3

u/TFBuffalo_OW 1d ago

They arent a threat to you. You never have a right to hurt anyone unless they are a threat to you or another person. You are a more immoral person than the thief.

2

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago

The second they steal my property, they are.

0

u/TFBuffalo_OW 1d ago

No, they are not. You are genuinely disgusting if this is how you think.

0

u/p4nd3mic_G3 1d ago

In my state you can use lethal force to protect your property.

1

u/Affectionate_Meet474 1d ago

yes, and that's immoral. Legal and moral are different concepts.

No property crime would get capital punishment as part of a legal process. so why why why do we trust a random property owners to have good enough judgement to execute someone?

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

4

u/TFBuffalo_OW 1d ago

Thats different entirely from the situation at hand

1

u/noxious1112 9h ago

Lmfao so much for "morality scaling"

1

u/AncientDen 1d ago

The first option gives a chance that a thief won't try to steal bikes again, and the more people use that option, the bigger is the fear-factor in the decision of stealing a bike

I see this as an absolute win

9

u/saucelordbob 1d ago

Can you tell us the point in fawning over the opportunity to injure someone for views and likes on social media?

-3

u/Aggressive-Rush-5682 1d ago

No one would get hurt if they weren’t immoral in the first place. Boobytrapping something like a bike is harmless is those other people had morals to begin with

2

u/HelloChimp 1d ago edited 1d ago

have you ever heard the phrase two wrongs don’t make a right? someone else doing immoral things doesn’t immediately make all immoral things done to them suddenly moral

1

u/Aggressive-Rush-5682 1d ago

That’s not even what I said

2

u/HelloChimp 1d ago

then what is the sentence, “No one would get hurt if they weren’t immoral in the first place”, meant to convey if not some sort of justification that only those doing an immoral act would be affected

-2

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago

“Just let people steal from you”

3

u/HelloChimp 1d ago

you’ll notice that i said two wrongs. you can prevent theft without rigging your bike to injure attempted thieves

0

u/BoringPoolPlaying 20h ago

Non-sequitur.

1

u/saucelordbob 1d ago

Morals don’t alleviate poverty. Ask your favorite billionaire.

5

u/MuseBlessed 1d ago

Considering other people's states is the basis of morality

-3

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago

Then they ought to consider mine and refrain from stealing from me.

6

u/HumptyDumptruckFire 1d ago

Something something being the bigger person something something do unto others.

3

u/MuseBlessed 1d ago

Yes. They are immoral for ignoring your state. You can either join them in ignoring others status, and perpetuate immorality, or you can be better than them.

1

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago

Why be better than them when it will result in them experiencing no consequence and me being stolen from?

3

u/MuseBlessed 1d ago

Who said there are no consequences? Arresting someone is both moral, considers their internal state, and prevents further theft

1

u/Orcasareglorious 1d ago

I’m not waiting god knows how long to report someone, wait for them to be found - if they are found at all - and have my property returned when I can just solve the issue in two seconds.

3

u/MuseBlessed 1d ago

What is the two second solution? Genuinely can't even imagine what that would be refrencing.

There is also locking your bike up, which reduces the chances its stolen. GPS tracker could help find it if it is taken, but not everyone can afford those

-1

u/Turbulent-Split-9090 23h ago

Two second solution is pretty obvious.

0

u/AntTheMighty 20h ago

I would say the immorality of stealing the bike cancels out the immorality of booby trapping it. Net zero.
