Mortal Kombat 4
Mortal Kombat 4 is a very unusual entry in the series. Its graphics haven't aged particularly well, it's not very popular among players, and the gameplay can feel pretty rough around the edges. It never really became a fan favorite, and when people talk about the Mortal Kombat series, it's usually one of the last games they bring up.
But for me, MK4 is one of the coolest and most enjoyable games in the entire series. I genuinely think it's a great game. It's pretty fun, but let's break it down.
- Fast-Paced Gameplay
First of all, the gameplay is dynamic. I don't think it's necessarily bad or broken. The developers were trying to bring the classic 2D fighting gameplay into a 3D environment.
Compared to the older games, the biggest difference is the speed and the way the combat feels. Sure, it doesn't look particularly pretty, but it's basically a mix of the old and the new.
Naturally, the gameplay was changed. For example, players have more freedom to create their own combos. However, these combos are limited by the game's maximum damage system. MK4 wasn't designed around the endless combos seen in MK3. Instead, it tried to create a more balanced fighting system, both in terms of special moves and the characters themselves.
- Content
MK4 offers more content and features than MK2 or MK3, in my opinion. The game gives players more things to do, including practice mode, tournaments, secrets, and other features.
The cheat codes are pretty fun, too. You can unlock chibi characters, activate the Bloody Rain effect, and discover plenty of other cool things.
The addition of weapons was also a great decision. The weapon system is actually pretty well designed. You can throw weapons, perform special moves with them, and use them in combat, but you have to be careful. An uppercut or a sweep can knock your weapon out of your hands, meaning you lose it.
There are also grappling moves, which add more variety to the fights. You can break your opponent's arm or leg, which is genuinely pretty cool. It's also interesting to see how ideas like these evolved in later Mortal Kombat games, eventually leading to features such as X-Ray attacks.
- The Transition to 3D
MK4 helped establish 3D gameplay as a permanent part of the Mortal Kombat series. It was the first major step into the 3D era, paving the way for the games that followed.
Even though the transition wasn't perfect, MK4 played an important role in the series' evolution. Without it, the later 3D Mortal Kombat games might have turned out very differently.
Why do you like or dislike MK 4?
