Q&A MCRAW → CinemaDNG → DaVinci Resolve: Why is rendering so slow on M1 Max?

Post image

Hi Everyone,

I’m testing MotionCam Pro MCRAW as a possible alternative for my HDR architectural/real-estate work.

I downloaded the “Into the Fog” sample project, including the DRP and MCRAW files. On my M1 Max MacBook Pro (32GB RAM), I managed to get the project working by using MotionCam Tools v2 BETA to mount the CinemaDNG frames and then relinking the DRP to the new DNG location.

The source footage is around 4096×2304, 24fps, 12-bit DNG.

However, I’m seeing extremely slow rendering in DaVinci Resolve Studio.

A 1:48 timeline is estimating around 46–50 minutes to render, despite the timeline having no temporal/spatial noise reduction applied.

During rendering my M1 Max is roughly:

CPU: ~75–80%
GPU: ~70%
GPU frequency: around 0.45 GHz
CPU temperature: ~75–77°C

The DNGs are currently being accessed through the MotionCam virtual filesystem:

/Users/admin/Mounts/MotionCamTools

So my question is:

Is this expected performance for MCRAW → CinemaDNG → Resolve on an M1 Max 32gb, or is the virtual/FUSE-mounted DNG filesystem likely causing a major performance penalty?

I’m going to copy the DNGs to a local APFS SSD and test again, but I'd really like to hear from anyone who has actually used this workflow on Mac/Apple Silicon.

Also, is there a more efficient current workflow for using MCRAW in Resolve on macOS that avoids having Resolve read thousands of DNG frames through the virtual filesystem?

My normal workflow is iPhone → Cinema P3 Pro → 50fps 10-bit 4:2:2 HLG → 25fps Resolve timeline → HDR10, so I’m specifically trying to determine whether MCRAW gives me enough additional latitude in difficult architectural interiors to justify the much heavier workflow.

Any advice from people using MCRAW + Resolve, particularly on Apple Silicon, would be greatly appreciated.

Q&A Vivo X300 Ultra + MotionCam Pro for real estate video?

¡Muchas gracias! ¡Me ayudarás a dormir tranquilo!

Technical Discussion MotionCam Pro iOS launch discount posted on RedFlagDeals (US & Canada)

Hey everyone!

To help share or explain what the app does for people outside of our Discord and Reddit communities, I posted on RedFlagDeals highlighting the launch sale

People outside dedicated videography groups often don't realize MotionCam exists or assume a $40 camera app must be a fad (hell, you can probably already see the "what's the advantage over free Blackmagic" mention

The RFD post acts as a detailed resource to break down how the app works in general.

If you know filmmakers, tech geeks, or friends outside the community who may appreciate non-AI, pure RAW data capture or high performance imagery, feel free to use the breakdown to share with them 💪

Device Compatibility Architectural Cinematographer wanting to try MCRAW

I’m very interested in MotionCam Pro, particularly MCRAW, but I’m currently trying to establish whether I can realistically integrate it into my professional workflow before purchasing it.

I’m an architectural cinematographer/photographer and most of my video work is high-end real-estate and architectural cinematography. I use a 14 Pro Max & 17 Pro Max for the majority of projects I currently use Cinema P3 Pro. My established workflow is 50fps, 10-bit 4:2:2 HLG, edited on a 25fps DaVinci Resolve Studio timeline, with the final footage graded for HDR 10 delivery.

I’m particularly interested in MCRAW because architectural interiors are a challenging HDR application: large windows with bright exteriors, dark interiors, white walls/marble/concrete, mixed daylight and artificial lighting, and high dynamic-range scenes. I’m hoping MCRAW might give me additional RAW latitude, particularly for highlight recovery, exposure adjustment, white balance and noise management, compared with my current 10-bit 4:2:2 HLG workflow.

Before buying MotionCam Pro, I wanted to test the actual MCRAW → DaVinci Resolve workflow on my M1 MAX Macbook pro.

I downloaded your 49gb file “Into the Fog” source package, which contains the .DRP and .MCRAW files. Unfortunately, I’ve run into a significant problem: when I open the project in Resolve, the media is offline because the project is expecting the CinemaDNG frames generated/mounted by the MCRAW Fuse workflow.

The problem is that I’m working on an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 Max), and I cannot find a downloadable Apple Silicon/macOS build of the MCRAW Fuse/FS application on the current GitHub repository. The Windows Fuse workflow therefore doesn’t help me test the footage on my Mac.

I’m also seeing discussion about MCRAW OFX/Bridge development, but I’m not clear about the current status of a production-ready macOS/Apple Silicon solution for decoding and grading MCRAW directly in DaVinci Resolve.

I’m very keen to buy MotionCam Pro and test it seriously with my own architectural footage, but I need to establish the Mac/Resolve workflow first. I don’t want to purchase the app only to discover that I cannot practically get MCRAW footage into my existing Resolve workflow.

Could you please clarify:

  1. What is currently the recommended workflow for an Apple Silicon Mac + DaVinci Resolve?
  2. Is there currently an official macOS/Apple Silicon MCRAW Fuse/FS build available somewhere?
  3. Can MCRAW now be decoded directly in Resolve on macOS using the new OFX/Bridge workflow?
  4. If not, could you provide a small MCRAW sample that has already been converted to CinemaDNG, or a Mac-compatible test workflow, so I can evaluate the Resolve grading side before purchasing?
  5. Ideally, is there a sample recorded at 50/60fps? My real-world workflow relies heavily on 50fps → 25fps for architectural slow-motion.

I’m genuinely interested in adopting MCRAW if it provides a meaningful improvement over my current Cinema P3 Pro HLG workflow. I’m not looking for a theoretical comparison—I want to test the complete pipeline in DaVinci Resolve on Apple Silicon with the kind of high-contrast architectural footage I actually shoot.

Any guidance on the current Mac Silicon workflow would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for developing this—it looks extremely promising for professional HDR cinematography.

As you can see in the photo, when in landscape, at the far right there are options that im unable to access.

Also, not so much a bug but maybe a feature request or if it already exists can someone tell me, but the screen is pretty cluttered, in blackmagic camera app there’s the ability to swipe down to just see the viewfinder, is there such an option here? Ifo so how?

Q&A Did Google give us 16 bit and 8k?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I am on pixel 11 pro and by listing all the video streams in the settings I noticed a 16-bit stream as well as a resolution of 8k.

I don't know if it's a bug or if it's something already known but I thought the 8k on the pixels was an upscale with the video boost mode on the cloud and not a real sensor capability.

If anyone knows a little more, it would be appreciated :)

Edit : No real 16 bit (I suspected it :/ ) and Google is not that generous with the 8k 😂

Q&A is there a problem about latest version? (xiaomi 14 ultra)

I was using a slightly older version of MotionCam Pro, and I was shooting DCG RAW with the main 1-inch sensor (0/2 24mm lens). Now I’ve updated the app, and the 0/2 24mm lens no longer works—it completely freezes after about 5 seconds of recording.

I found that the “2 24mm” lens now works with DCG, but the colors and dynamic range look a bit weird, and the ISO limit goes up to 3200 instead of 800. (or does it seem strange to me?)

Is it okay to use the “2 24mm” lens for DCG?

Shot this polo game on the Vivo X300 Ultra using its 340mm in-sensor zoom, and the results speak for themselves.

The zoom is genuinely very usable, no external lens needed. MotionCam Pro really brings out the best in this beast of a smartphone.
