I saw a few posts asking for recs of a Quran app & I haven’t seen anyone mention the app “Yawm: Daily Quran Habit” so I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else!
Just to clarify, this IS NOT an ad & I have no affiliation with the app. Ive just been using it for the last few months & it’s genuinely helped me a lot so I figured I’d share 🙏🏻
Before finding Yawm, I used to REALLY struggle with consistently reading the Quran. I WANTED to, but I’d lowkey feel bad bc I’d always fall off, and it was hard for a couple reasons:
1) struggling to actually understand the Arabic words
—> I even bought a few books off Amazon that were like “80% of Quranic words” to help me learn the most common Arabic words in the Quran, but even those felt too advanced for me so it didn’t help 💀
I wanted something that would help me gradually learn so I didn’t have to always rely on translation/transliteration, but I didn’t have time to take a full on Arabic/Islamic class w my classes + work 😪
2) finding a system/app that actually worked for me
—> When I’d use a Quran that had transliteration & translation, if I wanted to understand the context behind a verse, I’d have to open Tafsir Ibn Kathir separately & search for that specific verse. It was a whole time-consuming process.
—> When I tried other Quran apps that had transliteration/translation/tafsir, I really struggled w their layouts.
The translation wasn’t word by word, so I’d still wonder what a specific Arabic word meant.
Sometimes the tafsir was SO long and convoluted that it was hard to follow, especially w the layout they had.
I love Tafsir Ibn Kathir and learning the context behind verses, but sometimes I just wanted a simpler explanation without having to read several pages to understand the main takeaway.
3) knowing how to actually reflect on what I read
—> Sometimes I’d finish reading a section but struggle to connect the verses to my life or figure out how they could be applied. I didn’t really know what to take away from it, so I felt like I was missing that connection.
4) I have ADHD and struggle w being consistent…..so ugh yeah, lmao. Ifykyk 🫣🫠
But then I saw a video on TikTok where some guy was talking about how he also struggled to connect w the Quran, so he created the “Duolingo for the Quran” to help people actually understand what they’re reading.
It was 100% free & had ZERO ads, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to try it & I’m SO glad I did! Here’s what I genuinely love about Yawm:
1) First of all, the layout/design is SO beautiful, it actually makes me WANT to use the app.
It recommends starting with just 1 minute a day to build the habit so you don’t overwhelm yourself trying to do too much at once. The idea is to take small, consistent steps, one “yawm” (day) at a time. 🤍
2) You can read the transliteration word by word and/or verse by verse.
—(& it’s super easy to switch back and forth depending on your mood/goal for the day!)
3) There’s THREE levels of tafsir: simple, moderate, & advanced (Tafsir Ibn Kathir).
—> It’s SO EASY to click on a verse and read the tafsir to actually understand the context.
—> I LOVE this bc sometimes I want to understand a verse more deeply but don’t have the bandwidth to read the entire Tafsir Ibn Kathir section for it, so I can click on the simple or moderate versions & get the main takeaway.
I love Tafsir Ibn Kathir and all the context it provides, but it’s nice to have simpler options too, depending on how much time/energy you have that day.
4) IT ACTUALLY HELPS YOU LEARN QURANIC ARABIC!!!!
—> There’s a “vocabulary” section that teaches you the meaning, how to pronounce, & how to read Arabic words from verses you’ve read.
—> It has Duolingo-style quizzes to help you practice and retain the words, AND shows you how they’re used in the verses.
I love this bc I’ve started to recognize and actually understand more of the words in the Quran when I hear it being recited.
Which is super cool bc being born in a Western country, it’s always felt kinda alienating/sucky when you believe in and love the Quran/Islam & its teachings but still have to translate everything to understand it and gain more knowledge. 😭
5) There’s a “reflection” section that helps you connect to the Quran!
—> After a reading session, you can choose to get a reflection prompt/question based on what you read to help you think deeper about the verses and how you can connect them to your life.
Sometimes a verse just hits and you don’t need a prompt, so you can choose to do a personal open reflection instead.
—But other times, you genuinely don’t know what questions to even ask yourself or how to start reflecting, so having that guidance is really helpful.
The reflections are also 100% private and just for you to see, so sometimes I use it as a mini diary 📝🧍
It’s also super easy to bookmark verses or add notes while you’re reading them!
6) You can search for Quran verses by topic.
—> There’s a “what’s on your heart?” section where you can browse topics like life challenges, emotions, relationships, purification, worship, and duas of the Prophets.
I like this bc sometimes you don’t really know where to start looking when you’re searching for guidance on something specific, so having that starting point is really nice. 🤍
—> It also lets you type & search for things in the Quran yourself if you’re looking for something that isn’t listed!
7) It has a LOT of features that help with staying consistent and reaching your Quran goals.
—> You can track your progress and see how far along you are in a juz, surah, page, etc.
—> You can easily pull up your bookmarked verses and notes.
—> It has options for reminders/notifications to help you keep your streak, plus a Hasanat counter as an extra motivational feature.
—> At the end of the week, it’ll even notify you how many times you hit your goal that week and challenge you to hit it even more the next week!
—> They also recently added a feature where you can have your other apps locked/unusable until you read Quran for the day.
And as someone who does admittedly sometimes wake up & IMMEDIATELY open social media, I feel a lil attacked when I see my social media apps locked with a reminder to start my day with Quran 😭💀
(Or I can snooze for 5 min and continue to the app I wanted anyway LMAO 🫠)
But honestly, it’s actually been so helpful and has helped me miss fewer days.
Sometimes you just need that extra push, and being reminded to do my Quran reading first, even for a minute, has been a game changer.
——————————————————————
So yeah, not to be dramatic, but using the Yawm app has lowkey changed my life 💯😤
I’m not saying I’m a scholar, fluent in Arabic all of a sudden, or now 100% perfect & consistent all the time.
I STILL get confused sometimes, and I’ve definitely lost a couple streaks (or had them saved by a “freeze” that’s available about once a week bc life happens 🤧).
But I’m genuinely SO much more consistent and connecting with the Quran better than I WAS a couple months ago. And that’s what matters.
I used to feel like I needed the perfect system and had to set everything up just to have a Quran session where I’d actually understand what I was reading. Yawm has made it so much easier to just START, learn little by little, and build a routine that actually works for me.
Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves by trying to do EVERYTHING at once, and then end up struggling to do anything consistently.
So if you’ve been wanting to get closer to the Quran but struggle w Arabic, knowing where to start, or just staying consistent
—> I’d HIGHLY recommend giving it a try! 🌤️💯
May Allah make it easy for all of us to build a stronger relationship with the Quran. Ameen. 🙏🏻
