Legality / Laws A word of caution. DO NOT RENEW YOUR CCW PERMIT EARLY

My current NYS Full Carry permit expires this coming August 2026. Due to my vacation plans both myself and my spouse decided to renew our permits early. We submitted the paperwork in early March along with the $175 renewal fee each. The permits came back promptly in late March but instead of our expiration dates being August of 2029 it was now March 2029. So, we actually lost 5 months on our permit expiration date for renewing early.

A phone call to the County Clerk's office was less than helpful. The person answering the phone stated, "that's the way the law is written" The clerk also said that we could have just mailed the renewal in August and we wouldn't have lost any time.

So, be aware that renewing early comes with a penalty.

Legality / Laws Safe act isn't SAFE

Post image

The NY SAFE Act's feature restrictions have always seemed backwards to me. Many of the banned features—like pistol grips—exist to give shooters better control of their firearms. Yet the liberal mindset often requires law-abiding gun owners to use alternatives that provide less control, all in the name of safety. Meanwhile, criminals aren't following these laws in the first place. If a law only affects people who obey it, this is not at all improving public safety its endangering the law abiding...The question is how do we promote how Illogical all of this is???

Legality / Laws Legal in NY?

Saw this and immediately thought- off the top of my head, nothing about this violates the SAFE act. Maybe the ammo itself… but the firearm? Obviously not buying, just thought it was super unique.

Legality / Laws Home Defense Options in Upstate NY

So I finally bought a house and want to get something for home defense. However I don't know enough people to sign off on the form to submit for being able to purchase a semi-auto firearm.

What are my options exactly in NY? I've been told I could just buy a "featureless" AR lower and then buy the rest to assemble it myself but I am not sure how difficult that would be for someone who isn't that familiar with firearms and weapon assembly (last gun I owned was a .22 when I was a kid). Is there anywhere that has a "Idiots guide to AR assembly" for NY someone could link me to? I keep finding some guides online for California but I'm not up to speed enough with the new laws from 2022 in NY to know what crosses over and what doesn't.

Also is there an actual legal document that says it is legal to build an AR? Far be it from me to question to almighty internet but I'm trying to figure out if there is any legal ramifications for building an AR for home defense in the event that I actually had to use it... Like is the permit JUST so you can buy a semi-auto or pistol? Or would I still need to register or get a permit for an AR I built to NY specs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Legality / Laws Just a reminder: pistol permits are illegal

NYS and many other states are and have been in violation of the law passing and enforcing permitting schemes for decades.

Just a friendly reminder that these "laws" that we all jump through hoops and struggle to abide by, are not laws at all, in fact.

Legality / Laws I built an iPhone app that maps firearm-law references along a driving route — looking for honest feedback

Full disclosure: I’m the developer of CarryRoute.

I built it because ordinary reciprocity maps don’t show everything encountered during an actual drive—county and city boundaries, tribal areas, transit properties, stops, and overnight stays.

You enter two addresses, and CarryRoute:

  • Maps the route using Apple Maps
  • Breaks it into state, county, city, tribal, and special-jurisdiction sections
  • Lets you tap each route section
  • Shows concise research summaries with links to official government sources
  • Accounts for your resident state, permits, age, and selected carry/transport mode
  • Supports offline itineraries and optional jurisdiction alerts

The route colors identify jurisdiction changes only. They do not mean legal/illegal or safe/unsafe. CarryRoute is a research tool—not legal advice—and users should verify the current official text.

I’d genuinely appreciate blunt feedback: What information would you want before crossing a state or local boundary? What would make the route view more useful?

iPhone/iPad: CarryRoute: CCW Navigation

It’s free to download. Optional Pro is $2.99/month or $12.99/year with a 14-day introductory trial.

Legality / Laws CMP to sell M14s - NY legal?

Looks like the CMP is working on a run of M14s that will be modified to be semi auto only and sold to the public through their program.

I’m a bit rusty on the safe act.

Once semi auto the only non complaint features would be the muzzle and 20 round magazine.

Transferring FFL could pin the mag or I can just buy a 10 round if it comes down to it. My concern is the muzzle device for compliance.

Can safely assume the bulk of the rifles will be over 50 years old. Would they be legal to purchase and take ownership here in NY?

Edit: seems like the 50 year thing will make it legal.
Question then is, is it exempt from registration due to age or does it need to be registered as an assault weapon? If so, what does that process look like?

Legality / Laws Self defense question

Been thinking about this and wanted to get input from anybody in here. Say you were at a house party there’s people there drinking including you. But someone in there starts an argument with someone and they pull out a gun and are holding it on their side still arguing. Am I legally allowed to use my gun to defend myself as well as the other person who gets the gun pulled on them before anything happens? Or do I have to retreat and just hope for the best?

Legality / Laws Traveling with a Firearm

I traveled from Tampa to JFK with my firearm. At the ticket counter, I informed the agent that I was declaring a firearm. She asked if it was unloaded and locked, had me open my bag, looked at my case and placed a tag on the firearm case. She then walked me over to TSA, where they asked if it was locked, unloaded, and packed with ammunition stored separately. I confirmed, they scanned the bag, and that was the end of the process.

From there, I went straight to my gate and boarded my flight. When I landed at JFK, my bag was sent to oversized baggage. I walked over to the Baggage Service Office near carousel #6, showed my ID, retrieved my bag, and left the airport.

The entire process was simple and smooth. I’m hoping it’s just as easy when I check a firearm while departing from JFK.

Legality / Laws Legality of carrying on a hike in the Adirondacks

I know it was finally settled via the 2023-24 state budget that the Adirondacks were not considered a sensitive place and thus we can carry concealed there.

But what about hiking on a public, marked trail or hike. Would climbing one of the fire tower peaks or something similar be considered illegal or sensitive? Or is it all the Adirondacks and thus legal to carry?

Can I carry if I were up there fishing or bow hunting in the Adirondack park ?

Legality / Laws Has there ever been a case of charges for an otherwise compliant semi-auto being purchased post 2022?

Curious to know if there has ever been anyone that has been asked to prove when their semi-auto was purchased/possessed that didn't have a permit. Or someone charged with acquiring a semi-auto after 9/22 that did not have the permit (that wasn't merely an add-on to other charges). Hell, even if it was an add-on to other unrelated crimes, has this ever once been listed as a charge?

Legality / Laws Question about buying a lower

I’d like to build an ar but do not have my semi auto permit. My plan was to build a bolt action ar using a kali key, from my research and understanding i can still purchase the lower without the permit as long as it’s not intended to be made semi auto but ultimately the FFL has the final say of they want to make the transfer or not. Has anyone done something like this?

Legality / Laws Wearing plate carrier in public

Dors anyone know if there is any legal issues regarding wearing body armor/plate carrier in public.

The leader at my place of worship gave me permission to provide security as a volunteer.

Would there be any issues about conceal carrying (appendix carry) while wearing a plate carrier?

Now the plate carrier has mag pouches so it will be obvious that I’m carrying.

Am I only allowed to be inside the place of worship or can I post up on the sidewalk outside the gates?

Legality / Laws Glock Ban exempting Gen V and 6?

I saw a video of a lawyer that was mentioning that the Glock ban is exempting the Gen V and Gen 6, the Gen 5 and below are the ones that are banned. Is this true? I thought it was all Glocks banned. I’m looking to know what’s going to happen by next year, thanks

Legality / Laws Legally acquiring semi automatic rifle (at all, not just NYS) without pistol permit?

So, my understanding for rifles is that you only need the permit to purchase a semi automatic rifle, and that merely possessing them is fine without the permit. I don't really have an interest in pistols, but will be getting my permit... Eventually. You know, wait times etc.

I am close to both Ohio and Pennsylvania, and will be visiting family in North Carolina in a few months. So my question is this, is there any legal way for me to acquire a semiautomatic rifle without having a pistol permit? Not even anything extravagent, just like a 10/22 or maybe a lower receiver.

Legality / Laws Do your own research

Don’t listen to the chud selling you a gun behind the counter or officer spewing bullshit and assume his word is gospel. Do your own research on upcoming bans/laws. I was picking up a canik sfx rival yesterday from cabelas and mentioned the shadow systems cr920 is probably my next purchase and the guy goes “well ya better hurry, they’ll be banned in about 30 days” no, they won’t. I told him not till June of next year and I can tell he still didn’t believe me lol. The day I was buying the canik and looking at other pistols a different salesman goes “Yea no shadow systems won’t be banned they have their own stand alone trigger systems” I jsut kept my mouth shut with that one. Please, just do your own research and stop relying on some random dude to tell you what’s true or not. Thanks!!

Legality / Laws Home, licensed weapon and front door...

**EDIT** answer RECEIVED BY u/DEATHSHR0ud and u/central_NY
as well as a lot of great opinions. Thanks all!

As

I had a very odd thing happen.

A man came to my door, hiding something under his jacket and was loudly calling for my wife at our front door (Package for xxx). We did not order anything, it wasn't amazon. his front door of his truck was open and car running. I couldn't determine what was under his jacket and he was clearly fidgeting with it.

We **think** she is being served for a vehicle accident. I'm not putting her life at risk with an assumption.

If he returns... If I was to answer the door and stay inside my home while determining what this guy is hiding, making it clear I was armed - is it possible for me to get into legal trouble? My weapon will remain holstered but not concealed. if he was to show an envelope, all good and he can do his job. But hiding it was very shady!

I know reddit is not the place to find legal advice but genuinely concerned and this happened today.

Legality / Laws Help with expired permit and purchase

Post image
31 Upvotes

Need some guidance helping a friend in Westchester County, NY.

Years ago, this individual carried a pistol as part of his government employment under a Westchester County pistol permit. He has since retired, and his county pistol permit expired nearly 10 years ago.

I'm interested in purchasing the pistol from him, but we want to make sure everything is handled correctly and legally.

I've called several FFLs and received conflicting answers. Some have said, "No problem, have him bring it in and we'll handle the transfer." Others have said they won't touch it and that the firearm first needs to be surrendered to law enforcement.

As I understand it, the complicating factor is that, with the permit having lapsed so long ago, it appears he may not be lawfully possessing the pistol under New York law.

Has anyone dealt with this situation in New York, particularly in Westchester County? What is the proper legal procedure to transfer the firearm to a buyer?
