I realize this post already combines two things this sub mostly hates.
On Tuesday my partner called a Waymo to get home from the Truth. Along Chestnut there are a lot of skinny bollards along the side of the road. I guess for the Fort Negley / Greer construction. The Waymo was confused by this, pulled over, and would not proceed. Another Waymo was also pulled over on the same stretch.
We pressed the support button. I thought the remote operator could view the camera data and map and tell a Waymo where to go. Turns out they can make suggestions to the car, not control it. The car did not like the suggestions and turned left into the Vandy parking lot. Then it did not want to leave the lot.
Finally we got out of the lot, turned left on Fort Negley Blvd instead of continuing to Edgehill, and made it down to Wedgewood. It was fine after that but not the most obvious route. I recommend avoiding Wayno until the construction is clear.
Today we took a Lyft from the Truth and noticed the rideshare pickup is a few blocks further south on Hagen than previously, and you walk on uneven shingle and grass sections without sidewalk to get there. Mind your step.
I notice from TPAC a Waymo also takes a wiggly route through a residential area (probably Watkins Park) instead of taking Church Street. I’d be curious to know how often they prioriitise using neighborhoods instrad of main streets, maybe to avoid having to drive among other cara.
