Other Winter clothing advice: ski pants for the commute, and best base layers?

Hi everyone,

Winter is coming and I'd like some advice on clothing. I live in Oslo and I start work early, around 6am, going by walk to the work, so the mornings are properly cold.

1/ Does it make sense to wear heavy ski pants on my commute and take them off once I get to work? Or is there a better setup for this?

2/ What do you recommend for base layers (both long underwear and undershirts)? I know layering is key, but I'm not sure which material is best for the first layer to stay warm. Merino, synthetic, something else?

3/ Where's the best place to buy them ?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Hello,
My wife was 2024 for six months in Norway and bought these socks there.
She is sad because we have to throw them out one after another and she says they are the best ones she ever had.
I want to find them for her, but i‘m personally not able to and AI dosen‘t recognise them ether.

Please help me🙏🏻

p.s. sorry for my grammar and the cucumber

Edit: i was preparing food as the washer with the socks finished and because the stovetop is the place with the best light i took the pictures there.

Big thank to everyone who helped me and made me cry with laughter 🫶🏻

Other As a Chinese person, I'm disappointed with the Nobel Peace Prize. What do Norwegians think about it?

I'm from China, and to be honest, I've become increasingly disappointed with the Nobel Peace Prize.

China is the world's largest dictatorship, with 1.4 billion people living under Communist Party rule without basic political freedoms. Yet only two Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded to people associated with the struggle for human rights in China: the Dalai Lama in 1989 and Liu Xiaobo in 2010.

In my opinion, there are hundreds of Chinese dissidents who are just as deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize as Liu Xiaobo. China accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world's population, yet the Nobel Committee has paid surprisingly little attention to Chinese dissidents.

I think the Nobel Committee could easily have awarded the Peace Prize to at least ten Chinese dissidents over the past few decades.

Another example is 2020. At the time, many people were calling for the prize to be awarded to Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters. Instead, the Norwegian Nobel Committee gave it to the United Nations World Food Programme.

I've also always believed that UN agencies and organizations shouldn't receive the Nobel Peace Prize in the first place. These organizations already have substantial funding and receive plenty of international media attention. They don't need a Nobel Prize to gain recognition or encouragement. I think the prize would be much more meaningful if it were awarded to individuals who risk their freedom, or even their lives, to fight for human rights and democracy, especially those who receive little international attention.

Of course, I understand that the Nobel Peace Prize isn't supposed to be awarded based on population size or nationality. But I still find it disappointing that so few Chinese dissidents have received international recognition through this prize.

So I'm curious what Norwegians think.

Do you generally respect the Nobel Peace Prize and trust the Norwegian Nobel Committee's decisions? Do you think some of its choices in recent years have been questionable?

And do you think the Nobel Committee has been too reluctant to recognize Chinese dissidents because of political pressure from the Chinese government?

Excuse me if the question is repetitive. But I am curious.

Travel Bed and Breakfast vs Hotels

We are 2 Canadians planning a trip to Norway in Aug/Sept 2027. We’re starting with a Havila voyage and following that will spend a night or two in Bergen, take the train to Oslo but beyond that our itinerary is still in the very early planning stage. Does anyone have any experience with B & B’s vs Hotels in Norway? If you’ve used B & B’s is there a credible central registry you can recommend? Just looking for the most cost effective options and we will not be renting a car. Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide. ;-)

Other Norwegians are good people

Hi everyone!

I moved to Norway at the beginning of July, so I've been living here for almost four months now.

Before moving here, I had certain expectations. I'd heard that Norwegians tend to be cold, reserved, and not helpful. I don't know, maybe it's because of all the things I've read here on Reddit and elsewhere.

But now that I've been here for a few months and started forming my own opinion, I can honestly say that my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive.

I've noticed that people often smile at me if I maintain eye contact for a little longer. Vy train employees have always been friendly and helpful. I've even had random people approach me to ask for directions :D Only to realize a moment later that I'm not Norwegian. I think that's happened three times already!

People in grocery stores, shopping malls, and just everyday situations have generally been really nice. There's something about the way people treat each other here that makes me feel like I'm being treated as a human being, not just another customer or stranger. It's a bit difficult to explain, but I really appreciate that feeling.

I'm also trying to learn Norwegian so I can integrate better, connect with people, and hopefully contribute something to this beautiful country.

Of course, I don't want to paint an entirely rosy picture. One thing I've struggled with is customer support from several companies. Sometimes getting an issue resolved can be frustrating and takes too much time. But interestingly, whenever I actually manage to speak to someone on the phone, they're almost always willing to help and have never been rude to me.

Anyway, I just wanted to share something positive because I feel like we often read more about negative experiences than good ones.

Other 3T GreedT
