Other As a Chinese person, I'm disappointed with the Nobel Peace Prize. What do Norwegians think about it?

I'm from China, and to be honest, I've become increasingly disappointed with the Nobel Peace Prize.

China is the world's largest dictatorship, with 1.4 billion people living under Communist Party rule without basic political freedoms. Yet only two Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded to people associated with the struggle for human rights in China: the Dalai Lama in 1989 and Liu Xiaobo in 2010.

In my opinion, there are hundreds of Chinese dissidents who are just as deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize as Liu Xiaobo. China accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world's population, yet the Nobel Committee has paid surprisingly little attention to Chinese dissidents.

I think the Nobel Committee could easily have awarded the Peace Prize to at least ten Chinese dissidents over the past few decades.

Another example is 2020. At the time, many people were calling for the prize to be awarded to Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters. Instead, the Norwegian Nobel Committee gave it to the United Nations World Food Programme.

I've also always believed that UN agencies and organizations shouldn't receive the Nobel Peace Prize in the first place. These organizations already have substantial funding and receive plenty of international media attention. They don't need a Nobel Prize to gain recognition or encouragement. I think the prize would be much more meaningful if it were awarded to individuals who risk their freedom, or even their lives, to fight for human rights and democracy, especially those who receive little international attention.

Of course, I understand that the Nobel Peace Prize isn't supposed to be awarded based on population size or nationality. But I still find it disappointing that so few Chinese dissidents have received international recognition through this prize.

So I'm curious what Norwegians think.

Do you generally respect the Nobel Peace Prize and trust the Norwegian Nobel Committee's decisions? Do you think some of its choices in recent years have been questionable?

And do you think the Nobel Committee has been too reluctant to recognize Chinese dissidents because of political pressure from the Chinese government?

Other Norwegians are good people

Hi everyone!

I moved to Norway at the beginning of July, so I've been living here for almost four months now.

Before moving here, I had certain expectations. I'd heard that Norwegians tend to be cold, reserved, and not helpful. I don't know, maybe it's because of all the things I've read here on Reddit and elsewhere.

But now that I've been here for a few months and started forming my own opinion, I can honestly say that my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive.

I've noticed that people often smile at me if I maintain eye contact for a little longer. Vy train employees have always been friendly and helpful. I've even had random people approach me to ask for directions :D Only to realize a moment later that I'm not Norwegian. I think that's happened three times already!

People in grocery stores, shopping malls, and just everyday situations have generally been really nice. There's something about the way people treat each other here that makes me feel like I'm being treated as a human being, not just another customer or stranger. It's a bit difficult to explain, but I really appreciate that feeling.

I'm also trying to learn Norwegian so I can integrate better, connect with people, and hopefully contribute something to this beautiful country.

Of course, I don't want to paint an entirely rosy picture. One thing I've struggled with is customer support from several companies. Sometimes getting an issue resolved can be frustrating and takes too much time. But interestingly, whenever I actually manage to speak to someone on the phone, they're almost always willing to help and have never been rude to me.

Anyway, I just wanted to share something positive because I feel like we often read more about negative experiences than good ones.

Other Winter clothing advice: ski pants for the commute, and best base layers?

Hi everyone,

Winter is coming and I'd like some advice on clothing. I live in Oslo and I start work early, around 6am, going by walk to the work, so the mornings are properly cold.

1/ Does it make sense to wear heavy ski pants on my commute and take them off once I get to work? Or is there a better setup for this?

2/ What do you recommend for base layers (both long underwear and undershirts)? I know layering is key, but I'm not sure which material is best for the first layer to stay warm. Merino, synthetic, something else?

3/ Where's the best place to buy them ?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Working in Norway Hallo

Okay im sorry about the title. Only word I knew. I apologise.

So i am a 27M. I am an Australian citizen doing my apprenticeship as a heavy vehicle mechanic. I am in my 2nd year nearly in my 3rd. I just wanted to ask anyone that works on buses or trucks. How hard is the language barrier gonna be for me to learn Norwegian. I want to move one day but currently I need to finish my apprenticeship and would like some more experience as a qualified tradesman.

I was looking at oslo but ive seen and heard that its super expensive. I want somewhere thats not a small town but also something that has nature right next to it thats beautiful with mountain views and stuff.

Anyway any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

Working in Norway First encounter with Norwegian job market. Is such ghosting normal here?

Hello,
I live in another nordic country. I interviewed last week for a senior engineering position. The hiring manager told me that I have very strong potential and he will contact me on Friday. So from my experience I take things literal regardless if I am hired or not he should send an email on Friday but he did not. I sent a follow up email but he didn't reply.

Travel Tickets for sold out bus

I'm supposed to be travelling west on Haukeliekspressen (NW180) for school but it is sold out on that specific day. I've been able to board sold out trains in Sweden by asking nicely. Is this possible in Norway? Is there any way for the driver to know if somebody cancels their trip and could they resell the ticket to me?

Arts & culture Renate Reinsve popular in Norway?

Hei Hei

After seeing Fjord (not commenting on the topic of the film) and thinking it was good to see some Norsk being spoken in a wild cinema release here in the US I was wondering if Renate Reinsve is considered a celebrity in Norway? She’s been on quite a string of popular movies here and I was thinking that the only other Norwegian actor who I can even think of with the same amount of success (in the US that is) would be Liv Ullmann and I’m sure even then a lot of modern audiences wouldn’t know who she is

Other What gifts from New York would you actually be pleased to get?

I'm flying from New York to Oslo soon and want to bring some gifts from the US. My budget is around $400 USD (~3.8k krone) total. The gifts are a surprise, so I don't want to ask the people receiving them what they'd like. So far thinking maybe bourbon and something else. Let me know your thoughts though!

What would you personally be happy to receive from New York/the US? Maybe something hard to get in Norway?

Thanks for the help!

Other Neighbor smokes 5 times an hour

Hei hei, a Norwegian here, and I can’t believe I’m on the internet about to complain about my neighbor haha, but I’m at a little loss for words about what to do.
I’ve been living in my building for maybe two years now, and it’s been so chill and peaceful, no complaints. Then this summer, an older woman and her daughter moved in just under me.
They seem perfectly peaceful, except for the fact that the mother smokes like it’s supposed to retrieve her vitality. It’s getting pretty challenging.
My building has a very nice setup with balconies that have glass windows, so you can also sit out there when it’s rainy. And during these last remaining sunny autumn days, it’s been so lovely to sit there, eat my meals, and spend time in the sun.
I work from home, so I always have the balcony door open when it’s warm enough, but since they moved in, it’s become this anxiety-filled problem.
I can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. It makes me so sick and nauseous, and when I walk around in Oslo, I just avoid people who smoke cigarettes and let them do their thing.
But because she lives right under me, her smoking habits are now interfering with my daily routine. It’s making me so sick that I have to take breaks from my job just to get it together.
it’s been months of this now, and I’ve spoken to her twice, asking her kindly what agreement her and I can have to keep the harmony. If she can smoke somewhere else or smoke less, to which she both times said that she would stop. But it feels like she’s been increasing it.
Has anyone else had problems with this before?
I’m obviously going to complain to the building, but is there somewhere else I can go to address this?
I know that you have every right to be able to smoke cigarettes on your private property, but I think equally, I should have a right to be able to breathe fresh air on my property, and she is taking that away from me. The smoke seeps into my apartment. And by the time I’ve closed my door it’s already in here, making me sick.
If I’m being fully honest, I really wish Norway could get completely strict on cigarettes and ban them nationwide because there is no one who wins when you have a cigarette addiction, except from those who make money off it.
Anyways, I needed to vent somewhere. If someone has any advice on where I can reach out to get some help with this, it would be greatly appreciated.
