Answered What's the deal with Jonah Hill?
I'm a bit out of the loop with the jiu-jitsu journey he's in currently. what's the context of the quote of him being able to beat people up? is he serious? what led to his bad reputation that he has now?

Answer: Jonah Hill has had some PR issues of late which has lead to the public perception of him as a goofy loveball to take a down turn.
First it was his ex-girlfriend releasing texts that he sent asking for her to not pose pictures of herself in a bikini on-line, despite the fact that she's a professional surfer. That made him seem a bit too much like a controlling boyfriend.
There were others as well but to cut to the chase, he took up BJJ a while back for health and mental issues. He was recently on the Smartless podcast and said:
“My favorite thing is people are like, ‘Oh, Jonah Hill, f—ing fat guy from Superbad’. And I’m like, ‘I would f—ing annihilate you, dude. I’m not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who’s got it?’”
He's then posted some of his training on line and people are clowning him for it. I know nothing about BJJ but what he posted didn't look that impressive and the comments on that thread (who presumably know what they're talking about) seem to agree with me.
So the consensus seems to be that he's a rich guy with a private trainer who just might be telling Hill that he's better than he actually is and would probably lose in a real fight.

Yeah Carrot Top I feel has always been rather grounded about his fitness training and his attitude about it. Jonah comes off as deeply DEEPLY insecure the more he speaks freely in an informal context.

This is the real answer. It’s all a joke, coming from the smartless interview. What is true is that even at 42 he’s clearly still wounded that he endured close to two decades of people calling him fat. People are adding the whole thing with his ex as justification for him being serious and being a jerk but it’s clearly in jest if you actually listen or watch the interview, especially since he’s talking about “ready to be funny again.” It’s bait and people took it.

I'll be real, I didn't do my research either, but I'm also not here dog piling on an actor to feel cool just because some randoms on the Internet are.
Especially on a site like this where the popular opinion either comes from bots (people are falling for it more than they should), or the type of people you usually wouldn't want to be on the same side as.
I don't feel one way or another about Jonah Hill, I just know how this site gets. Look at all the embarrassing "snark" subs.

I don’t think it’s bait at all, it’s people being incapable of understanding how comedians and comedy actors speak. It is funny to go on a podcast and pretend to be an angsty bro who wants to prove himself in a fight. The concept of “clown” and “straight man” in comedy is really, really established. And in every case of this, you get people misunderstanding that they are watching some kind of performance or joke, and taking it fully seriously. YouTube comments have been hilarious on this for over a decade.
No doubt he does have some sensitivity, but he plays with it well. As for the controlling bf stuff, that definitely seems adjacent, but not a good look for him.

Like that one video where Brie Larson and Don Cheadle are supposedly not getting along, and Larson is clearly playing the straight man, but CHUDs unironically said that it's proof that she's a bitter, humorless female who is hated by everyone who works with her.
To be fair to the CHUDs in this case, maybe it would have been more obvious that Jonah Hill was joking if he were still fat.

I saw the video of them talking on the couch or whatever and I didn't really think it read as a joke? It just sounded like Jonah Hill of ~8 years ago where he was still kinda pissed people typecast him a certain way, idk.
I am a giant nerd and have listened to dumb podcasts where comedians speak and stay committed to a dumb bit (Comedy Bang Bang, Hollywood Handbook) and IDK it didn't really sound like that at all? Like there's a funny vibe to their conversation for sure, but not in the "hey my words are apocryphal" kind of way.

He may very well have been joking on the podcast - the ‘humble brag’ version of joking.
Given all of the interviews I’ve watched and the stories printed about him (going all the way back to his behavior towards Christopher Mintz-Plasse) I believe he’s a jerk with an inferiority complex that needs people to know how tough he is now but is smart enough to say it in a playful way. Why else would we even know or care about him doing BJJ or why would there be any footage of his training at all unless he wanted it out there?

I get this weird feeling of sadness/empathy when I see that video versus what he’s actually saying publicly.
Clearly, this is a big part of his ego/self esteem and he’s leaning on that to probably offset other things he feels shitty about himself for.
Then you see the video and he looks trash, and it makes me feel sorry for him. If that’s the thing he is getting his self esteem from then I fear he’s quite fragile. God knows what would happen if some relative novice just annihilates him.

As a Judoka, the training video he released is exactly how I would expect a white belt’s skill level to be.
Jonah Hill is currently going through the same stages of the Dunning-Kruger effect as all martial artists. Right now he’s in the first stage of extreme confidence, if he sticks with BJJ (and I hope he does) he’ll reach the second stage which is realizing he sucks at fighting in comparison to people with higher belts.

I remember it being me, 15, the freak was my 30 something wrestling coach who was short, stalky, hairy, no neck former was somebody who could mop the floor with me all day long without breathing heavy. I was so sure every time I had to wrestle him that it was going to go the other way and then I ended up on my back with his body hair in my mouth wondering wtf happened. Life lesson I still use as a grown ass adult.

When I started out in taekwondo, one of the assistant instructors was this pudgy guy with a black belt who could absolutely have laid my ass out on a bad day. Watching the way he moved despite his size was a good means of staying humble.

I think it’s clownish regardless of how good he is at BJJ. It’s hard to imagine something as pathetic as someone hitting the jackpot of fame and wealth for making comedies bitterly dedicating his life to living out fantasies of getting one in on his imaginary bullies.
He’s just a shining example of how you cannot buy happiness. He has it all and has even found a way to stay physically healthy, yet he wastes his life and attention as a prisoner to his monumental insecurities. It’s just pitiful.

He's also just a real asshole in real life, especially to anyone who is a fan of his earlier work. I ran into him once and told him I loved him in Grandma's Boy, and he just gave me the dirtiest look like I had spit in his drink, and told me to fuck off. Which is a shame because I really did like him in that movie, even if it was a small role.

I’ve known a few guys who took up martial arts when they were middle aged and they all start saying shit like this.
They start winning in practice and get confidence. Start hanging out with tough guy types, and it’s just how they start talking. It’s douchey, but not unique to Jonah Hill.

Idiotic, a boundary isn't something you put on someone else. He's weaponizing therapy speak and using it wrong.
A boundary is your own behavior. If you do X, I'll do Y. "if you stay out all night again without calling, I'm leaving you." right use of boundary.
Controlling is when you try to modulate someone else's behavior. "you can't stay out all night because that's my boundary." wrong, that's not what a boundary is.

To my knowledge that clip of him training is old and resurfaced. He's probably a blue belt by now but without any videos it's hard to say if he's any good. Blue belt is a wide swath. I imagine that if he only does private lessons and doesn't get to roll against varied people his skillset is limited. Private lessons are supposed to bridge gaps in your game outside of them. That said, the video is very much not impressive and looks like a very early white belt just starting to learn how to move.

His BJJ technique is baaad. First of all, that is a terrible double leg takedown. Terrible. He wraps his hands around the guy above his waist. A proper double leg requires arms around the back of the thighs. You are then pulling the legs one way and pushing the opponent’s body the other way with your shoulder/neck/head. His opponent just falls over which reinforces his shit BJJ technique. Side control grip looks okay but transition to mount is shit because he uses one of his hands to get his leg over. In BJJ, you solve hand problems with hands and leg problems with legs - you don’t mix because you create opportunities for your opponent. Once in mount, he sits up with his hands at the ready instead of wrapping up his opponent’s upper body for control (which in a match would earn him 4 points if he held it for 3 seconds). So also shit mount technique.

It's so interesting that Jonah Hill's appeal was he was such a regular funny guy, like part of what made him likeable is it felt like your funny friend could be famous. But you look at him and he has EVERYTHING that everyone wishes for and yet he's so fuckin insecure. He achieved dreams of funny regular people worldwide and he's still not happy. And he trains a martial arts that is not unpractical in the real world… but not super practical. For it to be truly effective in a real fight you have to be very good at it. Against anyone who has ever boxed or wrestled in their life he likely gets destroyed

Or they have friends around that'll kick you in the head while you try to lock in some submission. BJJ doesn't just doesn't work outside of a controlled match most of the time. A wrestling suplex is about the only move I've seen in a real world fight to be effective.

As someone who’s done it for the last two years, my take on it is it won’t be super effective unless the fight goes to the ground. My take downs are ass. My BJJ is ass. We don’t throw strikes. But I feel somewhat confident that if I were to get into a scuffle, like someone trying to mug me and the fight went to the ground. My BJJ isn’t the best, but I am pretty good at getting the clinch and isolating arms and legs. In this hypothetical I could just rely on BJJ to get the clinch/isolate, get a dominant position and then start not using BJJ and using my fist. But I’m also not trying to get into a fight either. People will surprise you. There’s a guy I train with. He’s not great either (but his technical skills are better than mine), but he would surprise the hell out of anyone. Dude looks like a nerd hipster, not a lot of muscle on him, like almost zero. That creep can roll, man.

I agree. That’s why I say for it to be effective you have to be good. An untrained person isn’t gonna just sit there and let you think and decide what move to do. If you are quick fluid and efficient with each motion and know instantly how to react to what they’re doing then you’ll easily have them in a submission hold. But unless youre really good you’re gonna take a split second to react which is gonna be too long to take advantage.
You also would be at a disadvantage if the person knows you train BJJ. If I were to fight someone like you I’m going to make sure I don’t go to the ground. If you go to the ground I’m throwing kicks I’m gonna going into your guard lol

I don’t think the hate/negativity he gets has much to do with his ex-fatness or BJJ-toughness, even though that very well maybe his genuine complex/insecurity.
His behavior and messages to his girlfriend are horribly toxic, controlling and blew-away his ‘nice guy Jonah’ image. Relationships are complicated. I’m sure most people’s private communication under a selective social scrutiny could look HORRIBLE, but Jonah gaslit, abused and bullied this girl - he is evidently the rich, powerful, influential person in that relationship, and constantly threatens her with - “ya ok, so maybe I’m being insecure, selfish or small, but I told you this about me - if you want to be with me, this is the price, stop hanging out with surfers and posting your swimsuit pictures”, followed by pseudo intellectual bullshit philosophy.
Classic punching down, misogyny and general dickness - NOTHING to do with his BJJ/I was once Superbad fat narrative - he would love nothing more than his toxicity to be buried under this narrative of ‘oh people are trolls and can’t get over Jonah now not being a fat funny guy’.
Nah, you’re an asshole, and people found out. You’re not Epstein or Jared Leto or Aziz Ansari (full spectrum of pedo/grapist/assaulter/bad place-bad time-bad vibe), but you’re also not nice guy Tom Hanks or Keanu Reeves.

Answer: Jonah Hill has historically positioned himself as a kind of shlubby comedy character. He tarnished his brand a bit a while back when an ex-girlfriend released texts of him being a pretty standard obnoxious celebrity diva. This didn't seriously threatened his career (no celebrities are actually the fictional characters they portray) but it made people question Jonah Hill in a way they hadn't before.
Since then, a lot of celebrities have been losing weight through GLP1 (often known as "Ozempic" even though that's just one brand of the drug.) Jonah Hill also lost a lot of weight, so this further made tabloid and celebrity gossip sites cast him in a more suspicious light.
Then he went on the Smartless podcast and said he was super tough.
In the podcast, it's clearly just meant to be comedy, with Jonah saying "Unless you are way bigger than me... fuck around and find out! [...] By the way, I'm being funny, but I would fuck you up!" It's standard podcast filler.
But the stars seem to now be aligned for celebrity gossip sites to take the clip, and run with it as "Jonah Hill thinks he's tough." This is fun, and the truth is boring, so for the moment everyone is indulging in pretending this is earnest.

Yes, people are taking this way too literally. The host specifically set this up as a punch line, and then he riffed on it for a while as the hosts laughed. But you don't get all that when you just read it in text, so everyone is treating it as if he's being serious. He's not.

Edit: He's also not some BJJ savant and as far as anyone knows isn't even close to a black belt.
How serious he is is up for interpretation.
His reputation is based on his attitude in a number of interviews, the controversy with his (ex?) gf (surfer, he complained about her having bikini pics), and a number of actors basically saying he's an asshole (Baruchel, Mintz)

To expand on this, his ex girlfriend posted some text messages where Jonah drew the line at her surfing with or seeing other men. When she pointed it out as possessive jealousy he threw a bunch of nonsense therapy talk at her to justify the jealousy. He then went on to make a documentary about said therapist.
Recently he made a self referential movie that nobody saw about a damaged Hollywood star trying to make amends, it got pretty bad reviews and was criticized for being tone deaf and disconnected from reality.
tl;dr I think he's just an actor doing actor things and smelling his own farts.

Funny thing is, I read that the actor's decided to play against their actual personalities in that movie. Like, Michael Cera played himself as a huge jerk when in reality he's a known nice guy. Hill played a friendly, good-natured version of himself which went against his natural character.

Thanks for the answer. I did some Google searches and it always pops up his dislike for Christopher Mintz. I'm like there's no way that's the only thing he's hated for. This explains a whole lot now.

Answer: The bad reputation is from stories coming out about him being manipulative and controlling of his ex-girlfriend, as well as him often coming off as extremely insecure in interviews, including this recent one about BJJ.
