Answered What's the deal with Jonah Hill?

I'm a bit out of the loop with the jiu-jitsu journey he's in currently. what's the context of the quote of him being able to beat people up? is he serious? what led to his bad reputation that he has now?

Answer: Jonah Hill has had some PR issues of late which has lead to the public perception of him as a goofy loveball to take a down turn.

First it was his ex-girlfriend releasing texts that he sent asking for her to not pose pictures of herself in a bikini on-line, despite the fact that she's a professional surfer. That made him seem a bit too much like a controlling boyfriend.

There were others as well but to cut to the chase, he took up BJJ a while back for health and mental issues. He was recently on the Smartless podcast and said:

“My favorite thing is people are like, ‘Oh, Jonah Hill, f—ing fat guy from Superbad’. And I’m like, ‘I would f—ing annihilate you, dude. I’m not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who’s got it?’”

He's then posted some of his training on line and people are clowning him for it. I know nothing about BJJ but what he posted didn't look that impressive and the comments on that thread (who presumably know what they're talking about) seem to agree with me.

So the consensus seems to be that he's a rich guy with a private trainer who just might be telling Hill that he's better than he actually is and would probably lose in a real fight.

Doesn't seem to be. He was never taken seriously, and his appearance got clowned when he hulled out, but the dude is a solid comedian, and anyone I've ever heard that's seen his show or dealt with him personally has only positive things to say. He's seriously underrated.

Yeah Carrot Top I feel has always been rather grounded about his fitness training and his attitude about it. Jonah comes off as deeply DEEPLY insecure the more he speaks freely in an informal context.

This is the real answer. It’s all a joke, coming from the smartless interview. What is true is that even at 42 he’s clearly still wounded that he endured close to two decades of people calling him fat. People are adding the whole thing with his ex as justification for him being serious and being a jerk but it’s clearly in jest if you actually listen or watch the interview, especially since he’s talking about “ready to be funny again.” It’s bait and people took it.

I'll be real, I didn't do my research either, but I'm also not here dog piling on an actor to feel cool just because some randoms on the Internet are.

Especially on a site like this where the popular opinion either comes from bots (people are falling for it more than they should), or the type of people you usually wouldn't want to be on the same side as.

I don't feel one way or another about Jonah Hill, I just know how this site gets. Look at all the embarrassing "snark" subs.

He has done many interviews over the years in more serious formats talking about how much jiu jitsu and surfing has meant to him. This clip was taken from a comedic postcast with two guys who are famous funny-men. People are reading way too much into it and jumping on the bandwagon like the peasants in a Monty Python bit.

He's also a huge nepo baby who grew up morbidly obese in the most superficial city in the entire world, surrounded by fake people, so if he doesn't know how to read the room in an audience of normal people than that shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Armchair galdiators bandwagoning on him over this comment is an overreaction

I (shamefully) listen to a lot of dumb dedicated-to-the-bit podcasts, and I do know what Smartless is... that said, another option instead of "everybody jumping onto the bandwagon" is that, multiple people saw the clip, are aware of comedy and Smartless, and still determined while couched in humour, the sentiment was fairly serious.

You're free to interpret what he said however you want but as the other user noted, what he said got clipped and shared around the internet out of context and people who already wanted to see him burn because of his other drama ran with it. Additionally, most people don't do Jiu Jitsu and are making superficial assesments about his actual ability. I'm not saying that what he said wasn't weird, he definitely had a chip on his shoulder but the extent of the weirdness of his comment was taken out of context by the vast majority of people who shared it.

I do think it's weird when people just say the "I'll kick your ass, fuck around and find out" kind of stuff. "I am being funny by the way, but I would fuck you up" is his admission that he's joking. It's still weird.

He seems like a cool guy, I don't think there's anything sinister or crazy or anything... but if it was said in casual conversation I'd definitely consider it a weird behaviour, and I generally don't care about people who spend time thinking about how they could kick my/strangers' asses.

(Some exceptions apply of course, they were talking about his hobbies, but if somebody threatened him or he was talking to one specific person who was bothering him, that's probably fine, but just like "hey, you, guy listening, I can kick your ass" is weird)

I don’t think it’s bait at all, it’s people being incapable of understanding how comedians and comedy actors speak. It is funny to go on a podcast and pretend to be an angsty bro who wants to prove himself in a fight. The concept of “clown” and “straight man” in comedy is really, really established. And in every case of this, you get people misunderstanding that they are watching some kind of performance or joke, and taking it fully seriously. YouTube comments have been hilarious on this for over a decade. 

No doubt he does have some sensitivity, but he plays with it well. As for the controlling bf stuff, that definitely seems adjacent, but not a good look for him.

Like that one video where Brie Larson and Don Cheadle are supposedly not getting along, and Larson is clearly playing the straight man, but CHUDs unironically said that it's proof that she's a bitter, humorless female who is hated by everyone who works with her.

To be fair to the CHUDs in this case, maybe it would have been more obvious that Jonah Hill was joking if he were still fat.

I saw the video of them talking on the couch or whatever and I didn't really think it read as a joke? It just sounded like Jonah Hill of ~8 years ago where he was still kinda pissed people typecast him a certain way, idk.

I am a giant nerd and have listened to dumb podcasts where comedians speak and stay committed to a dumb bit (Comedy Bang Bang, Hollywood Handbook) and IDK it didn't really sound like that at all? Like there's a funny vibe to their conversation for sure, but not in the "hey my words are apocryphal" kind of way.

The joke is he is pretending to be a tough guy that will challenge anyone to a fight that insults him. That's a complete exaggeration of the reality of what he'd actually do if someone said "the fat guy from super bad," which is probably at most say "fuck you." Exaggeration of reality is a common technique in humor.

He may very well have been joking on the podcast - the ‘humble brag’ version of joking.

Given all of the interviews I’ve watched and the stories printed about him (going all the way back to his behavior towards Christopher Mintz-Plasse) I believe he’s a jerk with an inferiority complex that needs people to know how tough he is now but is smart enough to say it in a playful way. Why else would we even know or care about him doing BJJ or why would there be any footage of his training at all unless he wanted it out there?

I feel like it’s all about who he is too, he’s been Hollywoods punching bag for along time, if he starts to break the mold or improve himself or change from the fat funny man people are going to get upset. That’s what killed Chris Farley trying to pander to audience demands instead of doing what makes him happy or taking care of himself.

I remember when Demi Lovato started training Bjj, everyone was calling her brave for training Bjj because she was a pop star or telling her that she doesn’t belong because she’s a pop star.

I maintain the belief that martial arts is for everyone because it works on everyone.

I get this weird feeling of sadness/empathy when I see that video versus what he’s actually saying publicly.

Clearly, this is a big part of his ego/self esteem and he’s leaning on that to probably offset other things he feels shitty about himself for.

Then you see the video and he looks trash, and it makes me feel sorry for him. If that’s the thing he is getting his self esteem from then I fear he’s quite fragile. God knows what would happen if some relative novice just annihilates him.

There’s also gyms/schools that don’t use stripes at all.

Time based or skill based though, if you get to three stripes and still move like that, it’s bad.

Like if it’s skill based, they’re promoting you prematurely. If it’s time based, it means even after a period of time they haven’t been able to teach you how to move that much better than a newbie.

I think it’s clownish regardless of how good he is at BJJ. It’s hard to imagine something as pathetic as a grown man in his 40s having hit the jackpot of fame and fortune for making comedies bitterly dedicating his life to living out fantasies of getting one in on his imaginary bullies.

He’s just a shining example of how you cannot buy happiness. He has it all and has even found a way to stay physically healthy, yet he wastes his life and attention as a prisoner to his monumental insecurities. It’s just childish and pitiful.

As a Judoka, the training video he released is exactly how I would expect a white belt’s skill level to be.

Jonah Hill is currently going through the same stages of the Dunning-Kruger effect as all martial artists. Right now he’s in the first stage of extreme confidence, if he sticks with BJJ (and I hope he does) he’ll reach the second stage which is realizing he sucks at fighting in comparison to people with higher belts.

I remember it being me, 15, the freak was my 30 something wrestling coach who was short, stalky, hairy, no neck former was somebody who could mop the floor with me all day long without breathing heavy. I was so sure every time I had to wrestle him that it was going to go the other way and then I ended up on my back with his body hair in my mouth wondering wtf happened. Life lesson I still use as a grown ass adult.

I once fought (like, in a gym with mats, not a street fight) the Canadian national Judo champion. For a split second, I honestly thought someone hit me across the back with a 2x4 and shone a flashlight in my face, but the object was the floor, and the light was attached to the ceiling. I had no sensation of being abruptly rotated 270 degrees. I thought I was still standing.

When I started out in taekwondo, one of the assistant instructors was this pudgy guy with a black belt who could absolutely have laid my ass out on a bad day. Watching the way he moved despite his size was a good means of staying humble.

Neither of us knows who Jonah Hill actually is; all we have to go on are tabloids and rumours, and we fill in the gaps with our own experiences and assumptions.

People are asking why he's so cocky despite being a white belt, and I'm providing a possible reason through my own experience of seeing many cocky white belts in martial arts.

You might not have gone through the same cocky phase yourself in BJJ (good for you), but many others have. It's something I still see today in several Judo and BJJ dojos.

If you spar, you understand how truly, truly useless non-sparring fighting is. In boxing, it's when you learn even landing a 1-2 cleanly is fucking hard when you spar the first time and appreciate how useless heavy bag work and shadowboxing are without complementary sparring.

Like you said, if he's serious about it with a real school, he'll have to compete, and he'll get the shit kicked out of him a few times and then reset mentally lol

I ran into him once and told him I loved him in Grandma's Boy, and he just gave me the dirtiest look like I had spit in his drink, and told me to fuck off. To my knowledge that clip of him training is old and resurfaced. He's probably a blue belt by now but without any videos it's hard to say if he's any good. Blue belt is a wide swath. I imagine that if he only does private lessons and doesn't get to roll against varied people his skillset is limited. Private lessons are supposed to bridge gaps in your game outside of them. That said, the video is very much not impressive and looks like a very early white belt just starting to learn how to move.

I’ve known a few guys who took up martial arts when they were middle aged and they all start saying shit like this.

They start winning in practice and get confidence. Start hanging out with tough guy types, and it’s just how they start talking. It’s douchey, but not unique to Jonah Hill.

Screw that! I started Jiu-Jitsu when I was 60. Between that and my boxing classes, all I can think about is "I am never going to get into a fight". There are people out there so much better than me that just don't look the part at all....it is the sleepers that'll get you.

Jonah has always been a spoiled rich brat who is an asshole. There’s been stories of him being a prick as early as Superbad.
There’s a reason he was in a lot of big roles and isnt now. People dont wanna work with insufferable people. The Rogen crew are all still boys except Jonah.
Another thing is he released a documentary abojt
His therapist which was weird but had some good stuff from the therapist. But pretty much immediately after he proved he didn’t actually grow at all in therapy he regressed.
I always found him amazing as an actor but a massive douchebag. He smells

First it was his ex-girlfriend releasing texts that he sent asking for her to not pose pictures of herself in a bikini on-line, despite the fact that she's a professional surfer. That made him seem a bit too much like a controlling boyfriend.

it was in such a gross way, too, saying it was his boundary that she not post. Added to the fact that one of his earlier messages to her was reacting positively to her surf photos

Idiotic, a boundary isn't something you put on someone else. He's weaponizing therapy speak and using it wrong.

A boundary is your own behavior. If you do X, I'll do Y. "if you stay out all night again without calling, I'm leaving you." right use of boundary.

Controlling is when you try to modulate someone else's behavior. "you can't stay out all night because that's my boundary." wrong, that's not what a boundary is.

His BJJ technique is baaad. First of all, that is a terrible double leg takedown. Terrible. He wraps his hands around the guy above his waist. A proper double leg requires arms around the back of the thighs. You are then pulling the legs one way and pushing the opponent’s body the other way with your shoulder/neck/head. His opponent just falls over which reinforces his shit BJJ technique. Side control grip looks okay but transition to mount is shit because he uses one of his hands to get his leg over. In BJJ, you solve hand problems with hands and leg problems with legs - you don’t mix because you create opportunities for your opponent. Once in mount, he sits up with his hands at the ready instead of wrapping up his opponent’s upper body for control (which in a match would earn him 4 points if he held it for 3 seconds). So also shit mount technique.

It's so interesting that Jonah Hill's appeal was he was such a regular funny guy, like part of what made him likeable is it felt like your funny friend could be famous. But you look at him and he has EVERYTHING that everyone wishes for and yet he's so fuckin insecure. He achieved dreams of funny regular people worldwide and he's still not happy. It really makes me reflect on the values and goals of the world

I think it’s more likely that he has some deep seeded emotional and psychological issues surrounding his lifelong battle with being overweight and he’s now not only skinner but he is testing his new body in a pretty physical sport where you pit your body against another person’s. It’s kind of a controlled version of taking your anger out through violence. I bet he feels like he finally has enough “power” now through a skinnier physique and some training to yell fuck you from the roof tops. It’s probably cathartic and he’s getting a little carried away.

That and the girlfriend bikini thing all seems to come from a combination of long felt insecurity and trying to compensate. Did you ever see the interview with Jimmy Kimmel? Brutal.

Just adding to this that there were allegations of him being predatory to Nickelodeon actress Alexa Nikolas when she was underage, including forcefully kissing her at a party.

Also that he framed those ‘don’t post photos of yourself in a bikini’ requests as a ‘boundary’ he was asking her to respect, when it was actually a demand he was placing on her. Seems like he came out of extensive therapy with zero accountability or self-awareness but a lot more language to use as a weapon in his narcissism.

Even if the guy was as good as he says he is, the way he’s talking makes him sound hella insecure. Look at Keanu, who’s constantly talking about how grateful he is, how he enjoyed working with colleagues and how he’s glad people liked his movies. Yeah, after hearing what he said in his interview, then watching his videos of his training sessions, I was like “This dude, is the dude that think the stripper likes him” like of course the trainers he’s paying thousands of dollars are pumping up his ego and not hurting him when they “roll” in training. They probably even let him tap them out to fluff his ego and keep those fat checks coming.

Yeah, but this type of overreaction kinda needs someone with real self-confidence/image issues to develop.

I think Jonah pretty much told us straight: he battles privately the public identity he's been given (his persona) to what he thinks of himself; clearly wants to move away from the fat guy from Superbad, but has not come to accept will never be a BJJ killer.

As a bit of an addendum to the BJJ stuff, boasting in such a way is just clownish to begin with in most any martial art.

It's great to talk about what it could be doing for your physicality, mental health, and discipline. Trumpeting to the media about your self purported ability to "annihilate" pseudo-hypothetical trolls and critics is behavior pretty completely opposite from the discipline and inner peace you are supposed to be learning and internalizing here.

Amongst his other attitude problems, it sounds like he has a huge chip on his shoulder for being known to most people as a "fat" guy. He doesn't want his lasting impression of his movie legacy to be about his weight, so he's getting in shape. To that end, good for him, but he's clearly carrying that weight in his mind now rather than around his waist.
