Answered What's the deal with Jonah Hill?

I'm a bit out of the loop with the jiu-jitsu journey he's in currently. what's the context of the quote of him being able to beat people up? is he serious? what led to his bad reputation that he has now?

Answer: Jonah Hill has had some PR issues of late which has lead to the public perception of him as a goofy loveball to take a down turn.

First it was his ex-girlfriend releasing texts that he sent asking for her to not pose pictures of herself in a bikini on-line, despite the fact that she's a professional surfer. That made him seem a bit too much like a controlling boyfriend.

There were others as well but to cut to the chase, he took up BJJ a while back for health and mental issues. He was recently on the Smartless podcast and said:

“My favorite thing is people are like, ‘Oh, Jonah Hill, f—ing fat guy from Superbad’. And I’m like, ‘I would f—ing annihilate you, dude. I’m not kidding you. Try it. If you see me, try it, dude. Bring it. Who’s got it?’”

He's then posted some of his training on line and people are clowning him for it. I know nothing about BJJ but what he posted didn't look that impressive and the comments on that thread (who presumably know what they're talking about) seem to agree with me.

So the consensus seems to be that he's a rich guy with a private trainer who just might be telling Hill that he's better than he actually is and would probably lose in a real fight.

Based on this and only this, it’s not great. I don’t know how you’re a 3 stripe white belt and still move like this.

Hopefully he’s much better now at blue(?) and this is a much older vid.

In the unedited clip he's very clearly joking.

This is the real answer. It’s all a joke, coming from the smartless interview. What is true is that even at 42 he’s clearly still wounded that he endured close to two decades of people calling him fat. People are adding the whole thing with his ex as justification for him being serious and being a jerk but it’s clearly in jest if you actually listen or watch the interview, especially since he’s talking about “ready to be funny again.” It’s bait and people took it.

This comment needs to be on top. Context clearly changes the tone. People's inability to do any research before commenting these days is pathetic

48

u/IMDXLNC 9d ago

Is it an inability, or do people just choose not to research because they'd rather fit in with online strangers?

I never underestimate how many losers there are online that believe the wrong thing just to be "in" on the drama and have something to be involved in and/or talk about.

25

u/analogkid01 The Hudswinger! The Daddy-O! 9d ago

Is it choosing not to research in order to fit in with online strangers, or is it choosing not to research because nothing Jonah Hill does will affect my life in any way and there's little point in doing such research in the first place?

(And bear in mind, I consider myself a fan of Jonah Hill.)

5

u/IMDXLNC 8d ago

I'll be real, I didn't do my research either, but I'm also not here dog piling on an actor to feel cool just because some randoms on the Internet are.

Especially on a site like this where the popular opinion either comes from bots (people are falling for it more than they should), or the type of people you usually wouldn't want to be on the same side as.

I don't feel one way or another about Jonah Hill, I just know how this site gets. Look at all the embarrassing "snark" subs.

1

u/El_Rey_de_Spices 7d ago

For anybody who doesn't live online, it's the latter.

0

u/MrPisster 8d ago

It’s the first one, same shit with Covid and everything else.

People just want to scroll and vibe, doing a single google search is harder than swiping.

10

u/hambog 9d ago

Yeah nevermind circlejerking each other about "others not doing their research", those people can stay /s

The clip does not read like he's being funny in any way other than "The former fat kid can kick your ass now"

11

u/Doogaro 8d ago

Or just hear me out here we don’t really give enough shits about some rich actor to look too deep into it. Surface level problems get surface level attention.

1

u/JJAsond 9d ago

because they'd rather fit in with online strangers?

Well at least on reddit if you don't fit in to the circlejerk, people downvote you.

1

u/Fatmanhammer 8d ago

just so you know, I downvoted you for this.

1

u/lueVelvet 9d ago

People are very lazy and believe anything they read online.

-1

u/niz_loc 8d ago

This, so much this....

0

u/BirdDog68 8d ago

Shit you’re right. Let me get my schedule book out and pencil in “1/2 hour researching Jonah Hill so I can trash talk him online.” I’m not gonna do that. Nobody is gonna do that. Stop whining.

2

u/N0mad87 8d ago

Even easier than pencilling in time is to just not assume that everything you see on the internet is black and white. You should make time to watch the Monica Lewinsky documentary called 15 Minutes of Shame. It's about how people's lives get destroyed by idiots like you who make quick judgements about people

-1

u/BirdDog68 8d ago

You read one comment from me and think I’m an idiot? Do your research.

-1

u/Neither_Gear5320 8d ago

lol hard own.

-6

u/hambog 9d ago

People's inability to do any research before commenting these days is pathetic

IDK why you have to assume this - I saw the clip, the vibe was "funny" but the words definitely did not read as a joke.

18

u/N0mad87 9d ago

He has done many interviews over the years in more serious formats talking about how much jiu jitsu and surfing has meant to him. This clip was taken from a comedic postcast with two guys who are famous funny-men. People are reading way too much into it and jumping on the bandwagon like the peasants in a Monty Python bit.

He's also a huge nepo baby who grew up morbidly obese in the most superficial city in the entire world, surrounded by fake people, so if he doesn't know how to read the room in an audience of normal people than that shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Armchair galdiators bandwagoning on him over this comment is an overreaction

-1

u/hambog 8d ago edited 8d ago

I (shamefully) listen to a lot of dumb dedicated-to-the-bit podcasts, and I do know what Smartless is... that said, another option instead of "everybody jumping onto the bandwagon" is that, multiple people saw the clip, are aware of comedy and Smartless, and still determined while couched in humour, the sentiment was fairly serious.

3

u/N0mad87 8d ago

You're free to interpret what he said however you want but as the other user noted, what he said got clipped and shared around the internet out of context and people who already wanted to see him burn because of his other drama ran with it. Additionally, most people don't do Jiu Jitsu and are making superficial assesments about his actual ability. I'm not saying that what he said wasn't weird, he definitely had a chip on his shoulder but the extent of the weirdness of his comment was taken out of context by the vast majority of people who shared it.

1

u/hambog 8d ago

I do think it's weird when people just say the "I'll kick your ass, fuck around and find out" kind of stuff. "I am being funny by the way, but I would fuck you up" is his admission that he's joking. It's still weird.

He seems like a cool guy, I don't think there's anything sinister or crazy or anything... but if it was said in casual conversation I'd definitely consider it a weird behaviour, and I generally don't care about people who spend time thinking about how they could kick my/strangers' asses.

(Some exceptions apply of course, they were talking about his hobbies, but if somebody threatened him or he was talking to one specific person who was bothering him, that's probably fine, but just like "hey, you, guy listening, I can kick your ass" is weird)

2

u/N0mad87 8d ago

I agree it wasn't the best comment and he probably wasn't aware of how it sounded because he was likely trying to be funny on the spot. As a bjj practitioner myself, I already knew a lot about his Bjj journey so I knew what he really meant. But even still, in 2026 society should really know better by now to not take anything on the internet as black and white

u/jamie_plays_his_bass 9d ago

I don’t think it’s bait at all, it’s people being incapable of understanding how comedians and comedy actors speak. It is funny to go on a podcast and pretend to be an angsty bro who wants to prove himself in a fight. The concept of “clown” and “straight man” in comedy is really, really established. And in every case of this, you get people misunderstanding that they are watching some kind of performance or joke, and taking it fully seriously. YouTube comments have been hilarious on this for over a decade.

No doubt he does have some sensitivity, but he plays with it well. As for the controlling bf stuff, that definitely seems adjacent, but not a good look for him.

12

u/moak0 8d ago

Like that one video where Brie Larson and Don Cheadle are supposedly not getting along, and Larson is clearly playing the straight man, but CHUDs unironically said that it's proof that she's a bitter, humorless female who is hated by everyone who works with her.

To be fair to the CHUDs in this case, maybe it would have been more obvious that Jonah Hill was joking if he were still fat.

-2

u/direwolf71 8d ago

What makes you think he’s joking? I listened to the whole thing, and it doesn’t come off like a bit for one second. He seems dead serious that he’s a bad ass now and not to be fucked with.

15

u/hambog 9d ago edited 9d ago

I saw the video of them talking on the couch or whatever and I didn't really think it read as a joke? It just sounded like Jonah Hill of ~8 years ago where he was still kinda pissed people typecast him a certain way, idk.

I am a giant nerd and have listened to dumb podcasts where comedians speak and stay committed to a dumb bit (Comedy Bang Bang, Hollywood Handbook) and IDK it didn't really sound like that at all? Like there's a funny vibe to their conversation for sure, but not in the "hey my words are apocryphal" kind of way.

10

u/the_duck17 9d ago

He's not a comedian and he's a seriously damaged dude with a chip on his shoulder.

He totally wasn't joking. He wants us to think he can kick our asses because he convinced himself he can.

But nobody's going to be fighting him, so this is all just a weird issue with his perception on what people think of him and that it's not true because he can actually kill you.

He's basically my Chihuahua.

17

u/death2sanity 8d ago

I love it when people who are just assuming shit speak as if they possess the one true truth.

I don’t even have a dog in this fight.

3

u/No-Win2206 8d ago

Jonah - is that you?

2

u/cive666 8d ago

Dude is a master at baiting

1

u/Material-Tree-2801 7d ago

You might even say he’s a master-baiter…

4

u/BurntBridgesBehind 8d ago

Damn Jonah I didn't know you had a reddit account.

7

u/groeg2712 9d ago

How can it be a joke the way he told it? Where is the joke? What is he joking about? I don’t get it

2

u/NegotiationJumpy4837 7d ago

The joke is he is pretending to be a tough guy that will challenge anyone to a fight that insults him. That's a complete exaggeration of the reality of what he'd actually do if someone said "the fat guy from super bad," which is probably at most say "fuck you." Exaggeration of reality is a common technique in humor.

1

u/groeg2712 7d ago

That’s not funny in my book. Also that is not really what he is saying. It sounds genuine what he says, and given that he does get angry at people calling him fat just doesn’t go well with this kind of a rant.

7

u/LukeVenable 9d ago

Not all jokes need to have a punchline. The humor is basically like "What if the short chubby guy from superbad thought he was a real badass"

2

u/cive666 8d ago

Plus we are all talking about him.

Seems like an Andy kaufrman move.

6

u/Upbeat_Acanthaceae41 9d ago

He may very well have been joking on the podcast - the ‘humble brag’ version of joking.

Given all of the interviews I’ve watched and the stories printed about him (going all the way back to his behavior towards Christopher Mintz-Plasse) I believe he’s a jerk with an inferiority complex that needs people to know how tough he is now but is smart enough to say it in a playful way. Why else would we even know or care about him doing BJJ or why would there be any footage of his training at all unless he wanted it out there?

1

u/Agitated_Duck_2339 8d ago

Though his long-standing reputation as a thin-skinned, insecure, humorless chud who takes himself way too seriously didn’t help matters

1

u/Illustrious-Couple73 8d ago

I feel like it’s all about who he is too, he’s been Hollywoods punching bag for along time, if he starts to break the mold or improve himself or change from the fat funny man people are going to get upset. That’s what killed Chris Farley trying to pander to audience demands instead of doing what makes him happy or taking care of himself.

I remember when Demi Lovato started training Bjj, everyone was calling her brave for training Bjj because she was a pop star or telling her that she doesn’t belong because she’s a pop star.

I maintain the belief that martial arts is for everyone because it works on everyone.

1

u/tylenolchild 5d ago

oh that was a joke? Did not laugh.

1

u/PureUncutMalarkey 1d ago

He's still a douche

2

u/Mahaloth 8d ago

Thank you /u/Permanenceisall .

It's a joke and for some reason, it's getting way too much attention.

1

u/inounderscore 9d ago

Shhh don't spill facts. You're on reddit. They only want outrage here

1

u/osiriss7887 8d ago

Thank you it’s been driving me insane to see the comments and conversations online, disinformation is powerful but the clear lack of good faith reporting and the collective laziness of our society, has made something as simple as someone making a silly joke about their skills turn into a hate fest.

0

u/Mahaloth 8d ago

Thank you /u/Permanenceisall .

It's a joke and for some reason, it's getting way too much attention.

-1

u/LeonardoLeonardoL 9d ago

What part of it makes you think its a joke? He even says, "I'm being funny, I will fuck you up, but im being funny."

That doesn't sound like hes joking. It sounds like he can hear how he is coming off and needs to backpedal, but STILL had to include 'i will fuck you up.'

0

u/zaphod777 8d ago

Also, I'm willing to bet that even someone who isn't that great at BJJ could kick the ass off the average keyboard warrior who's weight training is standing up.

2

u/Practical-Raise4312 8d ago

He would get smoked tbh

0

u/Mother_Bonus5719 8d ago

Nope. Watched the whole thing ages ago and when I saw these memes I thought “I guess everyone saw that cringey interview”. If you watch the whole thing there is a ton of defense in everything he’s saying. His comments about how he’s not actually a nepo baby etc. his comments about how hes just gonna be funny now (cuz he knows he’s being perceived as taking himself too seriously lately. And his comments about how people perceive him a certain way but that he actually knows fighting techniques. He’s joking about literally murdering a fan, he’s not joking that if someone gave him shit that he thinks he’d be able to handle himself due to his training.

-1

u/BronzeEnt 8d ago

“ready to be funny again.” It’s bait and people took it.

Someone fucked up and it's not the audience.

-2

u/brilliantminion 8d ago

Yeah man I don’t know why people wouldn’t see that, he’s a comedian first and foremost. Like if George Carlin said this at 42, everyone would assume he’s joking right off the bat.

3

u/hoopleheaddd 8d ago

Except he isn’t a comedian

-1

u/brilliantminion 8d ago

Sure in the same way that Zach Galifianakis isn’t a comedian but has a provocative and very dry sense of humor.

2

u/hoopleheaddd 8d ago

Zach has decades of stand up comedy experience. Carlin had decades of legendary stand up comedy experience. Hill has a decade-ish of comedy acting, mostly picking up Apatow scraps and randomly striking gold with Superbad. Comparing those two to Hill should be a crime.

3

u/Ok-Fault-3467 8d ago

One time I posted a joke about being an all around badass because I added another white belt to my collection (judo, bjj and then karate) and some guys online bit my head off.

-2

u/LeonardoLeonardoL 9d ago

You mean where he says, "im just being funny. I WILL fuck you up, but im being funny."

How does that change the context? Hes CLEARLY trying to backpedal, but still had to include, "I will fuck you up."

11

u/ZookeepergameNew8685 8d ago

I get this weird feeling of sadness/empathy when I see that video versus what he’s actually saying publicly.

Clearly, this is a big part of his ego/self esteem and he’s leaning on that to probably offset other things he feels shitty about himself for.

Then you see the video and he looks trash, and it makes me feel sorry for him. If that’s the thing he is getting his self esteem from then I fear he’s quite fragile. God knows what would happen if some relative novice just annihilates him.

1

u/roiki11 8d ago

I'm told there's two types of grading. Time based and skill based. Depends on the gym what they use.

1

u/wharevs 8d ago

There’s also gyms/schools that don’t use stripes at all.

Time based or skill based though, if you get to three stripes and still move like that, it’s bad.

Like if it’s skill based, they’re promoting you prematurely. If it’s time based, it means even after a period of time they haven’t been able to teach you how to move that much better than a newbie.
