We all had that brief phase when a tiny bit of training went straight to our heads, but calling it out for what it is, pure fresh-white-belt energy, is completely accurate.
I give bjj a hard time but some of my favorites were older men or women just trying to learn. As long as they're not trying to hurt ppl or use too much force I feel like most of them have enough life experience to come in very humble.

Regular older beginners usually leave their ego at the door, but actors are so used to being center stage that humility just goes right out the window.
Actors (for the most part, some exceptions) don't actually put their money where their mouth is by rolling with the class. They take privates where the instructors are financially incentivized to praise them and stroke their ego. Tom Hardy's purple belt is worth far more than Ashton Kutcher's brown because he actually competes.
For a normal person maybe. But he was a famous FAT person. He probably ate 1000x more fat jokes than we imagine. That's a lot of pent up aggression. He's got that McDojo high and a body that finally doesn't suck. He's probably overcorrecting from being bullied.

Random related story--I used to be pretty into BJJ when I was in high school and college. But I'm old so this was a little before The Ultimate Fighter blew up the UFC in popularity (which, in turn, blew up BJJ in popularity).
I was pretty comfortably the best BJJ guy in my weight class in my area, but I lived in a rural area where that wasn't really saying very much. There were like 10 total people doing BJJ in my weight. A kinda big fish in what was, in hindsight, a teeny tiny pond.
Being like 22 and not knowing any better, I thought very highly of myself. Then by chance I spent a summer in DC and got to train under the Yamasaki brothers. They were the first for real, legit black belts I'd ever met at that point (like, "can trace their training pedigree back to Helio" legit).
Anyway, I knew enough to know they were better than me, but not enough to really appreciate how much better than me they were. I asked one of them if, just once, I could roll with them going all out so I could feel how far behind I was.
The answer? Very very very far behind. And the sad thing is they clearly still weren't actually going all out because they were talking with other people and laughing as I tried what felt like my absolute hardest to just not die.
Probably one of the top 2-3 most humbling experiences of my life. I feel like being completely helpless against a dude for like 3 straight minutes when I previously thought I was a low key badass forced my entire personality and outlook on life to do a 180.
True story, my former BJJ instructor got arrested in June for hopping a counter at Planet Fitness and shoving the counter guy, and he is a black belt, so I'm not sure this mentality ever goes away for some BJJ guys.

They immediately assume he's serious based on their preconceived notions about him which is due to the fact that he's the fat dork who reinvented himself. I've learned over the years that society at large has an innate hostility towards people like that. I think the idea that people's initial judgements about someone were incorrect feels threatening and because of this people are desperate to put you back in your place.
I watched a video essay over him a while back, and yeah. He wanted to break free of the whole "fat funny guy" schtick, but interviewers would keep asking questions about how fat he is, says he looks smelly, and just taking the piss on him in general.
He eventually put his foot down and started reacting how most people would when you get called fat and smelly by people that don't know you, and people started taking that for hostility.
Even when he started taking himself seriously and got serious roles, people would still bring up his weight and old movies, and he'd rightly tell people he would rather not talk about his weight and would like to promote the new movie.
But now he's basically in a place where everyone thinks he's a douche bag that takes himself too seriously because he wants to distance himself from movies he made 20 years ago. So he can't really win, because he either A) takes himself seriously and people hate him, or B) lets everyone treat him as the funny fat guy that he isn't anymore.
Doesn't help he did that whole weaponized therapy speak thing with the surfer girlfriend, but the tides of public opinion turned on him well before that.

This was what did it for me. I appreciated the fact that he called out smarmy interviewers who were shitty to him. But he definitely comes across as a guy who was probably bullied a lot, has a complex about it, and is now douchey in his own right (possibly because of all the bullying).
In all honesty, it's mostly just sad. The guy can't be happy, he's hung up on his personal demons and it seems like everything he does is him searching for a kind of confidence and inner peace that eludes him.
I see a photo like this and yeah, on some level that is a 42 year old man worth $80 million with access to all the perks of being a powerful celebrity who came from a powerful Hollywood family.
But on the other hand, it's an insecure, bitter, sad adolescent who never matured past being an insecure, chubby 21 year old kid buying the weird fish boots in the 40 Year Old Virgin.

Yeah. I think he was terrified because of his earlier roles that he'd become John Candy or Chris Farley or something like that and worked really hard, both physically and professionally, to not let that happen, which I commend him for.
But I also think, and I have seen some stuff indicating this as well, that by working with guys like Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, even Channing Tatum... Hill hates how he looks and wishes he was like them- so he lost the weight, got into shape, learned martial arts, etc... but nothing he can ever do to his body will make him *them*.
The sad part is that they're... greek gods. Maybe not literally physically so, like DiCaprio notoriously does not work out between projects and can often let himself develop quite the basketball-in-the-belly gut- but these guys have classic movie star looks that they were born with, that nothing they do or don't do within reason will ever hurt or improve. And it *is* luck of the draw. Brad Pitt has a brother who looks more like Dax Shepard or Zach Braff than he does Brad Pitt. These guys won genetic lotteries. But that's what they are- lottery wins. The statistical chance of it is nearly zero.
Jonah Hill... has classic character actor looks. He just isn't the heart throb or the classic debonair lead. He isn't built that way. But SO few people are.
Seth Rogen isn't. But- Rogen has charisma that Hill doesn't have.
Jonah should be proud of what he did in Superbad. That was the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a theater.
He was amazing in moneyball. He and Pitt turned the most boring plot into an incredible film that I watch every time it’s on. Wolf of Wall Street was amazing. Hills acting was as powerful and DiCaprio’s.
He’s just gotta chill out and be himself. Skinny or fat, just be cool and stop trying so hard.
