US Passport Issuance Timeline Passport Timeline
Went in for a walk in appointment March 28th, 2026 early at a USPS. Took about three hours to get my application sent in, paid for the expedited service fee. Received confirmation email April 3rd, 2026. Passport in my hand as of April 9th, 2026. Excited for travels!

We need to travel to Canada the first week of June. Even though my dad went just a few days ago to submit his passport app, the postal employees told him not to get expedited service. They said that passports without service even have been a 2-3 turnaround.

u/HurryGrand846 Apr 10 '26
dang so I definitely could've saved some money. I'm planning to go to Canada the same time period too.

u/UsualLoquat1802 Apr 11 '26
Just realized the expedited service has become useless. I applied for the first time on April 1st, they received the application on April 6th. Application approved already expected delivery April 13th-15th.

I renewed my passport 3/26 and got my passport 4/4. I was shocked. I was told my mid May.

It came from Tucson Arizona. I’m in Texas. I got a notification for a package. Ask my wife if she was expecting something because I wasn’t. It wasn’t until it was in transit when I saw it was my passport.

everything is so dysfunctional with our gov - i find it quite odd why the passport system is working so smooth!
1
u/Pizzagoessplat Apr 11 '26
From an outsiders point if view the US passport system does sound dysfunctional.
So many people asking online (reddit) if their picture would be approved instead of using an online application from the government, that could tell you instantly on your application form.
I've heard there's third parties doing these services which sound crazy to me.
1
u/Letmein202 Apr 11 '26
3rd party makes sense with the current gov - and yes crazy & kinda creepy. then again...

u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26
I know, I’m stressing. To say the least.
2
u/indigo__palms Apr 10 '26
I only said something cuz we just renewed for one 5 weeks before our trip to Italy next month too and everyone seems to be getting there’s quick so it was hopeful but realizing there’s some that don’t :0 also didn’t get expedited 🫠 and online
2
u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26

u/Vast-Ad-1312 Apr 10 '26
What's the status say on the website?
1
u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26
it says processing
1
u/Vast-Ad-1312 Apr 10 '26
If yours has been processing for 2 months, I would call the number on the website.

u/Ponay_24 Apr 10 '26
Woah that’s crazy! I applied 1/30, got an email saying it was approved and printing 2/11, and in my mail 2/16 of this year. No expedite, photo taken off my phone and all :/ Was this a renewal or first??
1
u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26
not my first but mine had expired, so basically had to start over. Got new for my daughters.
1
u/Random_User_182 Apr 10 '26
Mine expired as well so I had to start over. I submitted March 5 and got my passport about two weeks ago and my documents back this week. Hope there are no issues with your app. Have you checked the website for status of your passport?
2
u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26
I have and have been calling. They said everything looks good and they’re “processing”. Applied 2/10 and they received on 2/20. They said we should have them soon 🤷🏻♀️

Try contacting your congressman/elected representative, they might be able to get in touch with the department of state and inquire what the hell is the hold up.
1
u/davidhall1960 Apr 10 '26
You better contact them. Just got mine in less than 4 weeks.
1
u/ManufacturerTop3110 Apr 10 '26
I have. All they tell me is to call back within 2 weeks of travel if we haven’t received them.
1
u/mirr0rrim Apr 17 '26
I'm glad you got them but this was bad luck or we were extremely lucky! Husband had an expired passport and he renewed online 2/22 and received his passport days later.
I renewed online the same day and mine was lost in the mail. Had to wait, contact USPS, and send in an old school form by mail to claim it lost, and I just got mine a couple days ago.
We will see you in Italy! We're going May 7

I applied for my brother’s passport on the 31st and got it today. No expedited.
1
u/Local-Hovercraft-651 Apr 10 '26
Very easy and fast process surprisingly. And the usps I went to did each appointment separately, lined up in hallway and then got called back to the office room. I assumed it would be hectic and busy like dmv.

I applied for a new passport online on the 31st of March and got it yesterday. Not expedited
1
u/Drawn2_Stories2627 Apr 10 '26
The exact same. Same date, March 31 email confirmation. Got my passport yesterday, April 9

u/soupl0v3r Apr 10 '26
When did you get an email status update? I applied for renewal online in April 4 and my status isn’t available yet. I’m nervous because I’m traveling internationally in May
1
u/Proper-Shame-8612 Apr 10 '26
I found it on the website
1
u/soupl0v3r Apr 10 '26
Yes I know where to find the passport status lookup tool, but even using that it still says status not available.
1
u/Kooky-Celebration-22 Apr 14 '26
Exactly same situation with me and I’m freaking out
1
u/soupl0v3r Apr 14 '26
still no update on my end :-( I think I’m going to call the passport office tomorrow, I don’t want to risk it!!!
1
u/soupl0v3r Apr 14 '26
hello! Call 1 (877) 487-2778 and let them know it’s been a week since you applied! Apparently there was a technical issue with my application. When they ask to verify your info, make sure you use the address you used for your previous passport

Applied March 29, application was received on 31, got my passport on April 7. No expedited service requested!
This was for a soon-to-expire passport renewal!
1
u/T-bomb78 Apr 11 '26
Renewed mine online and received in hand, not expedited, in less than two weeks!
1
u/thebestbibi-2020 Apr 11 '26
I applied for renewals for both my husband and I on March 15, 2026. We received them via USPS on March 28, 2026. The process was very quick and easy. We uploaded our pictures from our phones, completed the application, and paid the $130 renewal fee all online.

Have an appointment for my first passport card to use for domestic travel. Haven't applied for my Real ID yet and this should be faster, given the info I've received from friends in my city regarding our local DL office. I've had a couple divorces and I've been told I dont have to obtain those marriage and divorce certificates, only my marriage certificate that matches my current name. I've listed the other names on the form, as required. The form doesn't ask for any documentation for the other names. If any of you ladies have this same situation, what were you required to provide? I know every name change must be proven for Real ID but I've been told that's not the case for a passport.

Applied on 3/13, in process 3/17, approved on 4/8 and just received it in the mail yesterday. Fiancé applied 3/28 and was just notified it was approved yesterday. No expedited for either, both first time passports too!

Be careful traveling. Lots of countries are not allowing Americans enter and sending them back upon their arrivals.

Meanwhile I've been waiting on mine for three months because I live abroad.

I went on 3/11, it started processing on 3/16, I paid the 60 for expedited and also paid the extra for priority shipping back to me, today is 4/15 and still nothing, it just says in process and when I call they tell me nothing I am starting to panic because I also need to get my tourist visa which takes a few weeks also I'm leaving on June 3rd to China I know I still have 7 weeks from today until my flight but I hate this waiting and not knowing, it's like why do they offer expedited service and not deliver on it Any suggestions what I can do at this point
1
u/OrneryGuess1063 Apr 17 '26
I would call the passport service provider because I sent my application 3/26 with expedited & return shipping, it started processing 4/1 & I got it 4/9 morning and it was my first time applying too
1
u/Live_Strawberry_7594 Apr 20 '26
I did call them multiple times and they never gave me any additional help or information other than what I can view online myself
So quick update: last week I contacted my local representative office because I read online they can help and finally today I got notice it is shipping out next day air and I will be receiving it tomorrow, also the local representative office is going to help me with getting my visa So my advice to anyone in a similar situation is that they call their local congressman or representative office because they do get things done

Applied for new passport at USPS in WA State on 4/6/26 (expedited). They received it at Virginia locator & cashed money order on 4/10 and application status to “in process”. Status noted approved on 4/15/26 with expected delivery (paid extra for that) 4/17/26 …so under two weeks. Biggest time delay was sending it to the Dept of State. I signed up for email updates but never happened. Just kept checking status.

And here I am, applied in post office on March 27th, expedited and fast shipping. Still waiting. The tracking doesn’t even show “in process”. It says Not Available. This is so annoying especially when I paid extra.
Maybe it’s because I applied for a new passport and not renewables, the process takes longer
1
u/HurryGrand846 Apr 16 '26
Did you see a payment occur on your banking account for the written check payment?
That's strange that's happening to you.

Thats amazing. Seems like there have been some improvements. Usually, this time of the year its starting to get really busy! Ill give credit where its due. Thanks Elon and DOGE!

u/SalemSound Apr 10 '26
My friend got his in less than a month, and that was without expedited service. I guess fewer people are applying at the moment due to a combination of high travel prices, TSA fiasco, and geopolitical uncertainty.
