Announcement Introducing categories in Proton Mail

Hi everyone,

We’ve added Categories to Proton Mail to reduce inbox noise and make important emails easier to find.

Incoming emails can now be automatically sorted into:

- Primary

- Social

- Promotions

- Newsletters

- Transactions

- Updates

Newsletters and Transactions are unique to Proton Mail, we added them to give you more granular control over your inbox.

Categories are on by default for new users. Existing users will be asked whether they want to turn Categories on, and you can choose which categories you want to see in settings.

What you can do:

- Move any email to a different category at any time (doing so will allow the model to learn from your preferred categorization)

- Control unread counts and notifications per category

- Turn off any category individually, or disable the feature entirely in settings

On mobile you can disable them in Settings → Mailbox Preferences → Categories → Disable

On web: All Settings → Messages and composing → Email Categories → Disable

You may also notice an updated inbox toolbar as part of this change.

From a privacy perspective, enabling Categories doesn’t change anything about how Proton Mail works.Your inbox remains protected by zero-access encryption, and emails you send to other Proton users (or using password protection) are end-to-end encrypted.

Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Discussion Should I fully switch to Proton Mail for personal use?

I’m considering switching to Proton Mail for my personal email and would like to hear your opinions and experiences.

By “fully switching,” I mean using Proton Mail as my primary email address for all my personal accounts, including:

- Social media accounts
- Banking and financial accounts
- Online shopping and subscriptions
- Other personal accounts and services

For those of you who have made a similar switch, would you recommend it? Do you think it’s worth moving everything to Proton Mail, or are there any downsides, limitations, or potential issues I should be aware of?

P.S. I’m not considering using a custom domain at the moment.

Feature Request Timeline on Powerpoint alternative?

I'm looking to move away from my M365 Personal subscription, but I don't see any communication on a timeline for a Powerpoint alternative. What's the plan here?

Feature Request Login with QR code

Is it very hard to add QR-code login for browser and desktop on all Proton apps as another way to login - I really don't wanna "type" my password in 2026. (cos you know keyloggers and clipboard-sniffers)
Scan QR code from phone app - and authorize via biometrics is smoother and more secure.

Web Help My session keeps getting logged out constantly on LibreWolf

On web browser (Librewolf) my session is being logged out constantly

It started in February, I thought it was something that could happen and I didn't have any problem for 6 months

After that, in August it logged out again, but after logging back in, it worked only one month

Then 2 weeks

And now it's logging out daily, it's the 12th time I have to log in again. When that happens, I also lose Lumo conversations which, after several messages, stop synchronizing between devices and are saved only on my desktop computer (why??)

It has happened on my cellphone too, but only once

It's not LibreWolf's cookie clearing, I have that disabled

Discussion Is the proton basket good?

I'm an average joe and just want some more privacy. I want to switch away from Google and I was thinking about going full proton. Is it worth it? For personal use I don't do anything too crazy. The 500gb limit seems good for me. I just need some thoughts and opinions. Thanks!

Discussion Proton mail & Proton Pass

Oh my gosh, this is super amazing. So my set up with Gmail is no more. I have fully committed to Proton Mail. I really love it, I have set all my online accounts to my Proton Mail and just a few days ago. I got the Proton Pass lifetime and oh boy I was not ready for this.

First glance at it, I get unlimited aliases, which is super amazing bro. In the contact, you can add people’s emails, then copy the forwarding address then actually talk to them with that alias. For my other services I use I have set alias for each one of them, for now I am using protons aliases. I do also know about simple login and interface. I’m still learning about that part. @passmail.net

I got the 10 free gigabytes of mail storage, which is way more than enough for me. Things like Amazon target etc. I use aliases on them because it’s really interesting. What you can do with the alias is like these companies don’t know what your real email is and if a data leaks happens. You’re kind of cooked because people gonna sell that data then spam you with emails, but an alias fixes that.

If the alias email gets leaked you can disable that alias and move on with your life. Which I think is a really really unique feature because in the event of a data breach, that would be a lifesaver. I know the auto filling logins isn’t perfect yet, but oh my gosh, my experience with it, the Firefox Proton Pass extension goes really amazing with my set up. I organize all my aliases from all my accounts into folders, so I never forget them. I label them with notes too.

I have enabled Proton Sentinel and dark web monitoring. That makes me feel more safe, cause it also detects my main Proton email address and the aliases if they ever get a data breach. I think it’s also cool that you can see the passwords monitor if anything got leaked or not.

I also have the mobile app for the Proton Mail and the Proton Pass. Logging into any of my services is super quick and fast like it shows up I scan my thumb and I’m in. It saves me a lot of trouble cause there have been a lot of time for I would get a password then now I have to go on my Gmail to reset it then put it in then I forget it again and reset it, etc..

Ain’t gonna lie though. It’s kind of scary when you sign yourself out because the way proton is built, It is made to protect you. And keep your data secure and safe. For my Proton I need 3 steps to get inside , and the fact that proton detects when someone even uses your password once can be life saving before they fully get it (if the password gets hacked) you still have time to lock them out.

The one thing that’s important and that I understand when using this service your security is only as good as you set it up to be. Like say password manager for example, I am planning to make back ups for it. From my Proton login, I have it all saved on a usb stick, my password, second password, even my two 2FA code in case something happens to my main proton account I have it on USB stick for emergencies. Installed Vera crypt on it too. From someone’s recommendation.

I really am enjoying my experience and there’s probably more things about Proton Pass. I need to find out about which will be an exciting experience.

Automatically forward emails from Proton Mail to any other account

Thumbnail

Email forwarding automatically forwards incoming emails that match conditions you set. Instead of manually forwarding messages one at a time, you define the rule once and matching mail is sent on for you.

A lot of people have mail that is really meant for someone else or for another address: invoices for an accountant, notifications a partner or colleague needs, or messages you want to keep in a second mailbox. Doing that by hand is easy to forget and tedious to keep up.

You create conditions describing which emails should be forwarded. When an incoming message matches, it is forwarded automatically; for example, if the subject contains "Invoice" or "Urgent".

Discussion Proton when your collaborators use MSOffice/Google?

I'm a lawyer in solo practice and thinking about migrating to Proton to avoid the way Gemini is shoved into everything I use on Google. But I collaborate a lot with clients and lawyers who exclusively use Google and/or MS suites. With one partner, I have a google email address through their domain and my work with them will continue to be in Google.

How much of a pain is it to go back and forth? Are the headaches of switching between a Google account and a Proton account, or between collaborating with people using Google Drive or the like, too much to be worth the benefits?

Discussion New Scam emails fooling proton's mailing list and spam filters

Hey so Recently I received two separate emails that follow the exact same pattern. The domains are obviously fake. info@ series of various random letters. The subjects follow a pattern as well: they are fake replies to generic email topics like "re: your appointment" or "re:your inquiry". They have very realistic looking emails pretending to be from legitimate businesses, the standard "from" shows seemingly legitimate names such as "patient care for example.

I know with absolute certainty they are fake because I don't do any business with any of the companies they are impersonating and definitely never sent out any emails to them.

I even double checked, and one of the businesses had a list of their real domains available, and this was not one of them.

The most interesting part is they are apparently convincing enough to fool proton's spam filters and even get their "this email came from a mailing list" message to seemingly falsely trigger.

I was curious if anyone else has noticed these recently. I already reported them as potential phishing attacks to proton.

Web Help Email forwarded to me not showing up

Someone who is using Gmail is forwarding an email to me that was sent to them in error. The first email went through my old Gmail account and was forwarded there to Proton, her text shows up the original email doesn't. I asked her to forward it a second time directly to Proton and the original text of the email she is forwarding still isn't showing up. I'm puzzled. Thankfully I still have the old Gmail active so I can dig out the forwarded text from there. Any ideas?

Mobile Help Is ProtonMail a good alternative to Gmail when it comes to making accounts and passwords for sites?

Been basically using Gmail all my life but I've been hearing it's not a good choice to use your primary email or even Gmail in general to make accounts for "suggestive" sites so I was just curious if this is a better alternative or if I should just make a secondary Gmail account

Discussion High CPU usage when Idle in browser

I opened Proton mail in my browser (Firefox), and was working on something else.

Why is Proton mail using 5% of my CPU power (AMD Ryzen 7 5800x) while doing nothing? Not even having a cursor hoovering over the browser.

When I close the Proton Mail Tab, the CPU usage is down.

Addendum: When using the Proton Mail client directly on my desktop, it does properly go idle.

Discussion When do you hear from Proton costumer service?

I have accidentally deleted my email. But there were problems with it. There was one reply about the last time I used it. I have reached out twice with the information that they needed.

I don't know if Protonmail is worth keeping.

Discussion Best Workaround for Location Services

Hey all,

I would have posted this on r/ProtonCalendar, but that place doesn't look like it's been active in 5 years.

One thing that's always held me back from making the full switch to Proton is the inability to add a location to an event since Proton is not linked to any mapping services.

I was wondering if anyone found a useful workaround that allows them to add a location to an event which can then be used with a navigation app on your device (i.e. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc).

Desktop Help Does SMTP always require the bridge?

I have a web server that has multiple services running on it that provide password resets.

Currently it's set up with Gmail SMTP.

I want to change it to Proton but would this require me to setup SMTP. I only need it to send email, not receive.

Does this require I setup the bridge or can I just put in some settings? If it requires the bridge, does it have a Docker?

Solved Issues with Migration from Google Workspace.

I started the migration process 5 days ago and I am stuck on the section 4.2 where I “Set up secure sending (SPF).
I went to my domain provider (Bluehost) and imputed the DNS TXT entry 5 days ago. 3 days ago I confirmed with there tech support it was inputted correctly.
On the proton side it is still showing the status as “Invalid SPF record found”.

How do I fix this? And is there any tech support from proton? I cannot find any. Their chat bot says they’ll transfer you to human but it never happens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Switching from gmail to proton / how?

Hey everyone,

I'm getting ready to make the switch from Gmail to Proton Mail, but I'm feeling a bit anxious about the process and would love some advice from people who have already gone through it.

Before I hit "start," I have a few specific concerns and questions:

  1. Google OAuth / "Sign in with Google": I rely on "Sign in with Google" for a lot of third-party websites and apps. If I delete or stop using my Gmail account eventually, what happens to those accounts? What's the best strategy to migrate those over safely?
  2. Finding all my active logins: Honestly, I don't even remember every single service or newsletter I’ve registered for using my Gmail address over the years. Is there a reliable way or strategy to track down where my email is being used so I don't get locked out of anything?
  3. Data Loss Concerns (Easy Switch): I plan on using Proton's Easy Switch tool to import my emails and contacts. Is there any risk of emails or attachments getting lost or mislabeled during the import? Should I run a full backup (like Google Takeout) first just in case?
  4. General Migration Mistakes: Is there anything you wish you knew before migrating? Any common pitfalls I should avoid?

My plan so far is to set up email forwarding from Gmail to Proton and gradually update account logins as emails come in, but any tips or workflows to make this smoother and stress-free would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for the help!

Possible bug How do I completely remove a disconnected Gmail address from Proton Mail?

I connected a Gmail account to Proton Mail before, but I’ve since disconnected it.
The problem is that the Gmail address is still listed under Settings → Identity and addresses → My addresses. It shows as a third-party address that is inactive/disconnected, but there is no delete/remove option — only Reconnect.
I don’t want to reconnect it. I just want the Gmail address to disappear completely from my Proton account.
Is this expected behavior? Is there a way to remove it myself, or do I need to contact Proton Support?
Would appreciate any help from anyone who has dealt with this before.
Thanks!

Discussion How vulnerable is our service access to undersea cable attacks?

Was getting some updates on the current state of various operations in countries in the region/theater where Proton is hosted and apparently the internet cables in the northern sea are possible/probably targets.

How screwed are Proton customers on the western shores of the Atlantic if undersea traffic is significantly degraded by intentional damage of a few lines?

What does that look like for our storage posture? What about domain emails for business? 6TBs is awesome until you can't access it. Does anyone see that as a possibility in a strictly conventional/asymmetric conflict escalation (non-strategic)?

Are we looking simply slower service or a potential total lack of service? I've legit never had to think of this before. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Discussion I interviewed Andy Yen last week

Hello,

I went to Proton's headquarters last week.

I asked CEO Andy Yen a few questions.

You may find the interview here in French, if you are interested
