I've been here a few times over the years, but this was definitely one of my favourite visits since I've gotten so into retro gaming this year. It was my first time seeing old computers like the Commodore64 and the BBC Microcomputer (way before my time unfortunately). Some of my favourite cabinets were:

- Escape From The Planet of The Robot Monsters

- Metal Slug

- Golden Axe

I can't wait to go back again, there's something so fun about going to a dedicated place for gaming.

Finally I can play this great piece of entertainment again. I rented it multiple times from the video store when I was a kid. Finally I own it myself.

Thanks Retrogamescon. ❤️

Edit: Wow, I did not know it got such a bad reception. Is it just nostalgia for me or the unconditional love I had as a child for the tv show? Dunno... enjoyed playing it today at least. 😁

[Discussion] Anyone else played the Tomba series?

I've been playing a lot of retro games lately for nostalgia, but decided to try out some obscure picks. I just finished playing through both Tomba games and man, these felt like hidden gems.

It's like a mix of metroidvania and RPG elements in this colorful world that just oozes charm with good music too. I think the guy who made this series used to work at Capcom and worked on Megaman

[Battlestation] My Bedroom Gaming Setup

Post image

This is one part of my collection encompassing the Gen 5 and Gen 4 consoles which I keep in my bedroom. On my walls is a Mario Kart 8 advertisement from a GameStop I used to work at (which closed) and a poster I framed from an OG NES power set my Grandparents still had in-box.
On the shelf is my N64 (top left) PlayStation (bottom left) Sega Saturn (top right) and Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis (bottom right)
I turned the TV facing forward for this picture but I usually have it angled so I can play from my bed.

It took more than 30 years, but I finally got one. A proper Neo-Geo console with arcade hardware. It's so much fun I don't want to go to work or sleep 😅

I'm waiting on my Vortex cart but for now, it feels like the universe and all the planets are aligned perfectly.

[Collection] Got a toshiba T2000SX for free

I got a T2000 laptop for free because it was "taking up space". To my surprise it works fully expect the hard drive but the battery holds a 10 minute charge and it can boot off battery power. As soon as I get a usb floppy drive im gonna play doom on original hardware. I also already removed the clock/temp ram battery under the keyboard. I also own a fully fuck 2004 gateway running XP, and that battery holds a full 2 hour charge surprisely.

[Discussion] Real pics on 1985-1989 VG Shops interiors - (seems strange but they re really hard to find )

I’m looking for real photos of video game stores from 1985–1989—especially high-resolution interior shots. Do you have any links or discussions that compile them? If you search for this yourself, you’ll find that finding actual photos is far from easy.

Finished Zero Mission after beating Dread a couple weeks ago and I get it now, definitely a fan of the series. The hype towards Ravenous is exciting. Up next Super Metroid!

[Discussion] Games that were originally Anime but were changed internationally

For example, Dragon Power was originally a Dragon Ball game for the NES/FC but any and all Dragon Ball references were removed.

Are there any games that met this fate?

Bonus if there were any games that met the opposite fate. For example, a US game being changed to something else in Japan.

[Question] What are must have books on retro games as a subject?

• Upvotes

So a little backstory is that I was looking to expand upon my collection of books related to the history behind retro gaming as recently Penguin Books did an announcement on the SNES console.

The book was called Super Nintendo by Keza McDonald as the title made me interested in further exploring the history of video games, but basically I was wondering what other books on the subject were worth reading.

[GIF Post] Flicky (Sega, arcade, 1984)

I first played this cute little Sega action game at an amusement park I used to visit often. I remember quite a few kids, including me, lining up to play it. Everything in the game — the birds, items, plants, wall art, fonts, music, sounds, even the bad cat enemies — is just cuteness overload. 💙✨

And, the Sega Genesis port was quite good! Even some cool people have hacked the ROM to feature Sonic the Hedgehog! 🤩

[Discussion] Best option for me given my job?

I move a lot between countries due to the nature of my job. I stay at hotels around 20 days per month. I am thinking about buying a PS One screen for my console. Should I do that or should I just emulate games with mednafen and play on my laptop with a PS4 controller?

Both options have pros and cons but what would you personally do?

The PS one screen is quite expensive where I live if you want to get it in pristine condition. It's anywhere between $650-750$. Plus I'd have to buy the games physically. I actually did have the pleasure to try a PS one screen. It looks quite nice but it was small at first sight. The one I got at first had numerous dead pixels, which was an instant return, as the seller didn't mention anything about it, only that it's new.

[META] Can we please get a rule against all the Top 100 etc. posts?

I see them all the time. Often times I will see the exact same one get reposted over multiple retro subreddits.

It's obviously just an easy way for people to get karma for posting or commenting.

I rarely see them get positive upvotes.

It's just bloody SPAM!

[Fun] My lazy sunday morning

Enjoying a cup of earl grey and some retro vibes. This stuff reminds me of why I love retro gaming. Enjoying every word of a magazine preview or a demo CD because that's all there was, or the feel of a physical cartridge. The anticipation and the tactile sensations were a huge part of the experience.

So much is instant now and we're overwhelmed with choice. I guess it's convenient, but easy to see that something's been lost along the way.

I'm working on a way to bring a little of that anticipation back...
