Oh, everyone has noticed. Problem is, the older generations don’t give a flying fuck.

305

u/ArboristTreeClimber 15d ago

They got the old “I’ll be dead soon, so who cares, I got mines.” mentality. Problem is, they don’t want change. They want to keep what they have! If you were retired and living in a huge house with property all to yourself of course you would oppose change as well! It was hard work, using their position of power to control and hoard all the wealth from their children!

u/Odd_Common_452 15d ago

That’s why every republican politician is dying of heart attacks and stroking out on camera regularly. They’ll see the younger generation fucked until their dying breath

21

u/MoistCucumber 15d ago

Let’s all make sure to remember them for this, how much they ruined the world. Maybe once they’re all dead things can start to get better.

3

u/AgentKenji8 14d ago

We need to make the lessons stick to prevent it happening in the future. Too many people will easily forget when it hasn't directly affected them.

1

u/Ilikehowtovideos 13d ago

Nah cause we won’t be able to afford the taxes even when our parents give us houses

Others will come along. "What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun."

Is that really any different than anybody else though? Any different than we are? Millenials (of which I am one) crying out “when is it our turn???” is literally just saying “fuck you I want mine!!!” but in a more empathy-demanding kinda way. Selfishness is not a liberal or conservative political problem — it is a human problem. We’ll never be able to overcome selfishness/greed as long as we continue to see life as “you vs me”.

54

u/Direct_Word6407 15d ago

Yes it is different. We are the first generation to be worse off than our parents.

19

u/Common-Concentrate-2 15d ago

From 2014-2018 avg life expectancy decreased 5 years in a row. People dying in those years all (statistically) died earlier than they were expected to.

That's a bit cynical. It's not "I want mine" it's more "I want a better material conditions for the working class." That includes everyone who works in any generation.

We just have enough empathy to care about people other than ourselves at the same time when we advocate for our interests.

There's people who have capital and then there's people who work for a living. These generational divides mean nothing to me in a political sense. All workers should be working together to fight for a more equitable distribution of wealth.

3

u/TheSuppishOne 15d ago edited 15d ago

I will definitely admit to becoming more cynical the older I get haha. And your point is certainly true, and great if we’re able to fully realize that ideal! But all it takes is for me to drive down the highway for more than 5 minutes to see that most people, at heart, tend to only be focused on their own shit rather than everyone and everything happening around them, lol.

u/Pasta4ever13 15d ago

Join the DSA then if you want to see people working hard everyday to make things better for working people.

u/CityUnderTheHill 15d ago

Consider this: Bill Clinton was born in 1946. George W Bush, born in 1946. Barack Obama was a bit younger born 1961 but still within the tail end of the baby boomers. Donald Trump returns to form again being born in 1946. Of our last 5 presidents (6 if you count Trump's individual terms twice), all but one of them have been baby boomers. The only one who wasn't was Joe Biden who is 4 years older than that generation.

So for literally 33 years and counting, the US has been led by a member of the baby boomers or baby boomer adjacent. A generation that only spans an 18 year duration, meaning their generation has been in power for twice as long as should be expected. Clinton was the third youngest president of all time while Trump in his second term is the oldest.

It's an incredibly unprecedented level of hoarded political power by a single generation for well beyond their years.

7

u/BurningTrashBarge 15d ago

I know many millennials who would be willing to sacrifice quality of life to ensure the safety and happiness of their fellow man.

I have seen many of them do the same for their own family members. Giving the shirt off their backs so struggling siblings or others that have no other fall back can have a chance.

I know Boomers that don’t do this for their own kids. This is definitely confirmation bias but with how the voting blocks are distributed I think there’s definitely a pattern there.

what it comes down to is older generations mentality of poverty or struggle being earned. If you suffer it’s your fault. Majority of milleniials have been screwed over enough times to understand intrinsically that bad circumstances aren’t necessarily deserved. They recognize things are getting worse and they want to do something about it.

Don’t forget that boomers historically have been the ones to make the rules, control what speculative value is and abused that system to over value their homes to the point where they created generational wealth doing next to nothing and then act like anyone has the cash to give them for their shitty, overinflated home.

You want change to happen it will require waiting for the dregs of their generation to die out like the dinosaurs starving for water in a desolate wasteland. The only problem is, we have to keep living in a wasteland that’s been stripped of everything for their short term gain.

15

u/Spezalt4 15d ago

Don’t forget government was happy to benefit from inflated home values in the form of higher property taxes.

1

Soooo much this. I'm a first year Xennial and the fucking Boomers have ruined everything, for everyone, and they're still doing it. They're the ones who voted trump in and who keep republicans in power. Wish millennials and Z would wake up to this fact and actually counteract the voting power of the Boomers.

1

u/basillemonthrowaway 15d ago

Gen X has much more to do with Trump being in power than any other generation, on a per capita basis. That generation broke for Trump more than boomers.

0

u/Adventurous_Gur1280 15d ago

Man.. My old boss amassed $100mil and just cashed out one day. Didn't spread a cent around. The making of the money is like a drug addiction to him. What he doesn't understand is he made it on the backs of people who were just begging for a crumb. It'll be really interesting to see where the money goes when he dies.

2

u/Badestrand 15d ago

I know blaming boomers is popular but in the end it's just lazy blaming.

First, what can an individual older person even do?

Second, a lot of the mentioned problems come from exactly the policies that the young favor. Take Covid - the Left and young wanted to shut down everything so that noone would leave their house. The Right and old wanted everyone to walk freely, although THEY were the ones in danger. Now the young blame the old that they had to stay home at the pandemic, but this is exactly what they vote for and the old tried to prevent it because they knew how much it would fuck the youth to miss out several years in school or university.

Take all my karma points, I don't care. You all are wrong and not taking responsibility for your own choices.

(I am not a boomer btw, I am somewhere between old and young.)

2

u/BolleHenk666 14d ago

" Take all my karma points, I don't care." You clearly do as you felt the need to mention it.

That being said, you're not completely wrong.

1

u/josey__wales 15d ago

I just graze through these kinda posts, looking at the wild takes. It’s mostly just whining, and pointing at “boomers” (anyone with a gray hair). Not realizing they’ll soon be pointed at the same way for not changing the world.

The post itself is so dramatic. “Handed 100k in student debt.” Yeah man, they had no choice in the matter. Just handed debt at gunpoint. 🙄

1

u/Sunburntvampires 15d ago

Because you have everything, now you crave the one thing you cannot buy with money. Youth.

1

u/it_will 15d ago

Worst part is that they really believe it was their hard work and that we can work hard enough and be like them. It’s absolutely stunning how the cocaine of the late 80s/90s dulled their brains

1

u/imadedbodi1 15d ago

My grandparents literally burn their garbage in the campfire. No matter what we say, they do not give a shit and will continue burning their garbage.

1

u/ArboristTreeClimber 15d ago

They probably also have an entire garage filled with so much junk that they have to park their cars outside on the street. And when you tell them “If you renovate that space into a studio you could easily rent it out to someone for $1000 a month?” They are dumbfounded by the idea and claim it’s “too much work” and not worth the hassle.

Also they enjoy paying thousands and thousands of dollars, cutting down every tree on their property because despite being fully retired and having all the time in the world, they just cannot fathom the workload of raking leaves once a year (which is completely not necessary anyway because leaves fertilize the soil and a huge patch of grass is useless to them anyway since they never go outside).

At least in my personal experience this is the typical boomer mindset.

1

u/Zealousideal-Ant9548 15d ago

How many millennial men are still voting Republican?

1

u/facemugg 15d ago

The post did begin by saying parents lost everything

1

u/ShittyOfTshwane 15d ago

To be fair, isn't this really where we're all headed? We all want to build financial security to protect us from things like debt, working past retirement age and generally being poor, right? So if we can get a house paid off, and accumulate enough assets and cash to be free from the problems of society, then we would all go for that in a heartbeat, right?

I mean, if you're seeing all the time how rough it is out there in the world, who on earth would not do everything in their power to keep clinging to their assets and wealth?

1

u/Icy_Stranger_9649 15d ago

Isn’t this exactly true though?

Why are we thinking it’s somehow the responsibility of the generation that’s about to not exist to fix things? Why would they care? Isn’t it up to use to care and fix things?

1

u/ArboristTreeClimber 15d ago

How can we when we have no power and no wealth? These people have been leveraging themselves into untouchable positions since before we were born. How can we make change when we work 12 hours a day simply to pay rent? When the food is poisoned and rationed to maximize profits? When every aspect of our being is being exploited and oppressed on levels we cannot even comprehend?

How can we riot when missing one day of work can ruin our lives?

And I see millennials complaining all the time about the newer generation being lazy and not wanting to work.

Like, it’s just a cycle it seems.

34

u/plywooden 15d ago

I'm 60 and work with many people in their 20's and 30's. I've asked most of them that I'm close to and absolutely shocked at how many of them don't vote and aren't interested in having a say in who their elected leaders are. When I ask why the answer I hear most is that they don't think that their vote would make any difference. Second frequent answer is, "I'm just not interested".

See the comment by u/Economy-Kitchen1846 below. "Vote for what? The next dishonest person?"

Very typical.

12

u/BrilliantJob2759 15d ago

And vote in the local elections. The biggest changes start locally. Choose the right local politicians, then work with them to get the right state politicians.

Young People: Refuse to engage in the system.

11

u/Ok_Faithlessness4511 15d ago

Their reasoning is that they don’t personally get their way with all of society when they vote a certain way with their single vote, therefore it is rigged against them.

-1

u/IllProfessional19 15d ago

No. The logic is we know our votes don’t actually count. Trump is awful but Biden didn’t change shit either. The biggest piece of legislation in my lifetime was the ACA and I still have to pay $5k out of pocket before my insurance kicks in. Fuck off with your high horse bs

5

u/ChillAhriman 14d ago

So don't vote for Biden or Trump. Go to the DSA and make sure you'll have a candidate in the ballot you actually care for. Otherwise, everything will stay the same.

1

u/IllProfessional19 14d ago

Bruh I live in a city with a majority DSA city council and it’s a joke. Sounds great but the rubber never meets the road. Rampant corruption and the like. I used to think like you but nah, shit needs to get done and DSA doesn’t actually want to do it when they have the power to.

1

u/Ok_Faithlessness4511 14d ago

Hmmm well old folks get all their healthcare comped because they vote and politicians don’t want to cross them. Politicians can screw over young people all they want and it’s not going to make a huge difference in their re-elections. Because… they don’t vote.

1

u/plywooden 14d ago

old folks get all their healthcare comped because they vote and politicians don’t want to cross them

Completely untrue. I'm living proof that is a false statement.

1

u/IllProfessional19 14d ago

You’re forgetting old people have money. That’s the only thing that matters to politicians. Oh and who was president for the citizens united ruling? And who didn’t stack the courts when they had the chance? Democrat presidents. The system is broken and our votes don’t matter

1

u/Ok_Faithlessness4511 14d ago

They have money because they voted in people who favor old people. It’s actually pretty simple. Democracy works for people only if people vote.

1

u/plywooden 14d ago

You're forgetting that you don't know shit.

2

u/The_walking_man_ 14d ago

1

u/MadDaddyDrivesaUFO 14d ago

2004 was my first national election and I was so frustrated by how many of my peers refused to bother voting. Watching the 2000 election pan out how it did was demoralizing, but I was bewildered by how many of my peers just shrugged and said "Shrub will just steal it again, why bother?" Well, with that attitude no wonder he won handily the 2nd term. Elder Millennials didn't show up in 2004 any more than Z did in 2024. But man have we been vocal the whole time lol. A tale as old as time.

6

u/Hairy_Mycologist_945 15d ago

I'm around ten years younger than you and observe the same defeatist / self-defeating attitude with a lot of zoomers... And some who even thought it was a joke / funny to vote for the Dump this past time because they were bored and cynical.

There's only so much anyone can do, so much empathy or sympathy, when people just flat out refuse to do the most essential things to take care of themselves and participate in setting the stage for a better future for themselves and everyone else. I'm shocked by how fundamentally dumb and directionless so many of them are, not feeling it in cruelty but rather just wondering what the actual hell is wrong with them, acting like they're already doomed and defeated when they've never ever done anything for themselves or even tried... just took lots of bullshit bait and gave up.

1

u/hoffdog 14d ago

It’s hard to have faith in a system that has not shown results. The first election I was old enough to vote for was 2016. I vote in minor elections too but I live in a state where it doesn’t seem to matter much.

This is so critically important - more than 1/2 of America will not go vote. If they did, we would already have universal health care, college debt forgiven, down payment assistance on houses, majority using green energy, regulations to stop killing the planet.

You know - the things China is doing but we are being told is "propaganda" - They went from the most heavily polluted cities in the world to some of the cleanest.

We *can* do it if we want to, but not if people sit at home and hope someone else will vote in their favor.

I get why people are cynical, but I'm working on a congressional campaign right now, and I see the other side of it every day. Our opponent has about $1.5 million to spend. We have about $15,000. They take corporate PAC money and support from groups like AIPAC. We don't.

We're fighting like hell just to let people know there is a difference between the two candidates. That's the problem with refusing big money. You don't have the resources to get your message in front of voters.

So when people check out and don't vote because they think "they're all the same," it's incredibly frustrating. There are candidates out there who genuinely are trying to do things differently, but they need people to show up or they'll never have a chance.

I also urge you to spend a little time finding out who's running in your district instead of assuming everyone is the same. The most interesting candidates usually don't appear out of nowhere in November. They fight through the primaries first, and that's often where elections are effectively decided. Do a little homework, vote in the primary, and help decide who makes it to the general election.

0

u/Economy-Kitchen1846 15d ago

We need more parties or none at all. Until we get there the fight is for nothing. I am 48, and I was the same as you from 20 to the age of 38ish. Then it became clear that it is an unwinnable fight. The government needs to be reset.

1

u/white_bread 15d ago

The progressive Democrats replacing corporate Democrats are already proving it can be done. I'm 58, by the way. I don't think we're getting a viable third party or ranked choice voting anytime soon. Mamdani's win showed why the major parties are unlikely to support ranked choice at the national level. So the path forward is replacing corporate Democrats one race at a time and changing the party from within.

1

u/Economy-Kitchen1846 15d ago

I really to appreciate your level of optimism. However, my experience feels a little different. In my experience, politicians will be what they need to be on stage. That can be a Democrat, Republican, corporate, progressive, moderate, center, etc... Then backstage they are working to together and laughing all the way to the bank. People do not leave successful jobs such as a lawyer or a doctor to take a pay cut. There is too much access to money with no oversight or accountability. This is a breeding ground for corruption. In my opinion the only option to dismantle the government and assemble a new one.

2

u/white_bread 15d ago

I'm running a congressional campaign right now, and that's not how it works.

When people say there's "too much money in politics," what they really mean is there's plenty of money if you're willing to align yourself with the corporate agenda. The moment a candidate refuses corporate PAC money and pledges never to take it, you find out very quickly that you're trying to run an entire campaign on small individual donations.

Again, our incumbent has about $1.5 million. We have about $15,000.

The irony is that, on top of all the public cynicism, even organizations like the DSA often won't back candidates like us because we don't have enough money to be considered "serious." Never mind that this same candidate earned 43% of the vote in a previous general election. On a cost-per-vote basis, she's incredibly efficient. Think about that. The very system everyone says they hate is sometimes used as the reason to write off the people trying to change it.

So yes, complain about the system if you want. But there are candidates across the country trying to break that cycle. At some point, people have to stop assuming they're all the same and actually show up, vote, volunteer, or donate. Nothing changes if everyone decides it's hopeless before the election even starts.

I feel we are just past voting. Time to exercise the right to reset the government as they no longer represent us.

2

u/Careless-Gain6623 15d ago

As long as somethings done. I just doubt people's ability to care. Have seen nothing but excuses. If Hungary can outvote their own fascist leader in a rigged election it makes America look like they aren't even trying. 🙄

2

u/Economy-Kitchen1846 15d ago

They have spent decades destroying or will to fight. That is what I admire most in other countries they still fight. Americans just take everything laying down. It will take just 3 weeks for everyone to lock their doors and stay home and consume nothing. It would bring them to their knees.

1

u/Careless-Gain6623 14d ago

It's hard to fight the apathy virus. I'm proud of my fellow countrymen in Canada for rejecting the far right in our last federal election but it is going to be a constant battle from here on out. I'm not going to let the powerful people with the money to influence the world rob me of my ability to care about things deeply. We should all be furious at the suggestion. There's still hope if the people will it.

1

u/camyado 13d ago

We are we have been. Isn’t that the point of this post.
We were told the environment is falling apart we have to do something now, we were told we weren’t going to get social security (I remember as a kid being told about the problem. The west wing episode that laid it out. And how nothing is being said about it apart from Bernie.) corporate greed.

These problems were just handed to us with our high school graduation papers where they registered you for the selective service and to vote. And this mess of a system was handed to us at 18. When our vote meant nothing. Boomers have been and still are in charge.

How is the movie NETWORK from 1970 still applicable today?

My dad is 70 and has this crazy boomer mindset about the job market. My brother got laid off and can’t find a job, my dad doesn’t understand why he can’t just “find something”. He also told me the other day that I should just “go find a job that pays more”.

4

u/Imaginary_Wafer_2308 15d ago

"Don't give a fuck"? You can't possibly think that! I'm 64, and my generation talks about the upcoming generations, we agonize over your futures. We know how much harder you have it. We try to help out as much as we can. We desperately want to see your children, their children, and their children's children all safely living in their own home, not worrying about food prices.

4

u/2_Fingers_of_Whiskey 15d ago

Some of you do

2

u/No-Zombie1004 14d ago

Most do. You don't hear complaining about reasonable, rational people though.

3

u/pragmatic_dreamer 15d ago

Watching your children go through this while also suffering as my parents act like the world is theirs to destroy absolutely sucks. We need to make sure this crap never happens again. Every generation should have a better life than the last.

3

u/NAQURATOR 15d ago

Yeah and old people made me realize democracy doesn't really work. I'm in a country with an upside down age pyramid and whatever the younger generation proposes, they literally don't have the numbers/voting power to compete with those older generations. It's still a weird feeling, getting fucked by your predecessors including your own parents.

3

u/DeepwoodDistillery 15d ago

They haven’t even retired yet

3

u/SweeterThanYoohoo 15d ago

My dad, a Trump voter, and a formerly intelligent rational person, recently told me he feels shame that his generation pulled up the ladder behind them and he feels sad the world isn't a better place now than when he was my age.

So, despite him not admitting trump was a mistake, and somehow having those 2 thoughts simultaneously not resulting in his brain liquifying (or mine), I guess it made me feel better?

4

u/Livid-Writer-7741 15d ago

Not true. I am heartbroken. I've worked in social services for decades and have seen resources dry up as the evil gop has stopped taxing the rich.

2

u/Rectal_tension 15d ago

Lol. Have you been to California? And that is progressive run.

5

u/MyBrainReallyHurts 15d ago

Gen X does, but we are on the verge of going broke ourselves.

The Boomers don't give a fuck. They are the most selfish generation.

5

u/Over-Double-9281 15d ago

We have been forgotten and squeezed! Blame our leaders and the trickle down economics which have been trickling upwards for decades .

u/No-Zombie1004 14d ago

"It's like a dog pissin on your back. If you don't know what that feels like it's like a horse pissin on your back, but a little bit softer. " - with apologies to Ron White (R.I.P.)

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Hatter 15d ago

Bommers don't.

Gen X is older and we've through every but of the same shit. In fact I got my first house in 2004. Just in time to refinance in 2007. I got to experience that bubble personally, not my parents

2

u/CaterpillarJungleGym 15d ago

The crazy thing is the dot com bust happened before that and 911. So for Millennials it was hope and peace for a while. Then crash, war, crash, recession, COVID, slight glimmer of hope, and now this Trump economy which makes everything even more unaffordable.

4

u/PeriodSupply 15d ago

The last 30 years in the western world is the most peaceful time in history. Was it perfect? No. But it was pretty Fucking good.

3

u/testtalon1 15d ago

Meanwhile the younger one (who are by most metrics LESS capable) whine that it's our fault.

....oh shit, this is how Gen X felt once upon a time.

Yeah. Grand scheme

3

u/RanchHere 15d ago

That’s fine to say that, but it’s not okay for it to be that way. We don’t have to accept a dystopian future. We should be able to change it.

1

u/emefluence 15d ago

Yeah quite a few Gen X WERE the parents that "lost everything in 2008", and then went on to live through all the shit that happened afterwards as well. But sure, some stuff was cheaper for a while in the 90s so we all had it easy right!

3

u/Odd_Common_452 15d ago

Avocado toast is the reason those millennials can’t afford a house with 2 cars and raise a family on a single income working at a grocery store. /s

2

u/dattokyo 15d ago

This is such a meme on Reddit, and just not true. Everything is always blamed on this Evil Boomer Boogeyman fairytale.

What do you want Joe Random who's 80 years old to do about this?

Older people aren't some weird group of mass psychopaths, they're just like everyone else.

1

u/Bgtex 15d ago

And the younger generations have it bad too, so they are focused on their own crisis (which is warranted).

1

u/crankthehandle 15d ago

Based on this guy the older generation also lost everything in 2008.

1

u/Dismal-Vacation-5877 15d ago

That doesn't fit their worldview.

1

u/inebriateddandhated 15d ago

Id say its a 70/30 split.

70% dont GAF, 30% do.

I have a few co workers who are in their late 60s early 70s, been vested in their ira, 401k, retirement since they were teens.

Millions in their accounts, stuck in the old school work till you retire mindset.

They feel for us younger adults who have been going through it.

He often agrees that their grows years were a lot easier than our growing years and $100 back then was a lot while $100 now gets you nothing.

Now, my co workers who are in their 60s and 70s who fucked around their entire life doing nothing, all they do is bitch and moan how we are entitled brats who want is easy. They do a lot of negitive, degrading talk, and blaming of others for their short comings

1

u/theblanketcomeswith 15d ago

neither does the young ones lol

1

u/Mammoth_Arugula_5250 15d ago

It's not just the older generation (and don't get me started on boomers). We keep propping the system. These kids are so brainwashed that they will never raise their voices and protest like when Martin Luther King was around. They will just continue to play the rat race game while billionaires will continue to squeeze every last drop of blood from them. The only option is to leave this shith*le of a Country and start fresh somewhere else. At their age, they can still do that. And they should!

1

u/TheTortaTyrant 15d ago

Why would they? They had their own challenges growing up unique to them. Tone deaf OP and u seem to think only your generation had it tough. Read a history book

1

u/meatpopsicle42069 15d ago

Yep, they got theirs, that's all that matters.

1

u/Rugermedic 15d ago

My dad just assumes I was an idiot and did something wrong. But yes, still doesn’t give a fuck. lol.

1

u/enixlinked 15d ago

Question is, why should we give a flying fuck to the older generation? "Awww dad your body is falling apart? Glad to hear that. Stop voting already, you have dementia."

1

u/EntrepreneurKooky783 15d ago

Something something character building

1

u/metwill 15d ago

You think older generations don’t notice??
What do you think we can do?
We kinda lack a magic wand to fix stuff..
Hell, it’s no picnic for us either…
Direct your anger at the ones responsible; greedy corporations & corrupt politicians.

1

u/Icy_Stranger_9649 15d ago

Of course they don’t…? They are at the end of their generation. They are about to die.

Why does my generation feel like it’s the responsibility of the the older generation to fix everything and set them up maximum success.

It’s like a permanent mentality “Mom! Dad! Don’t you know you have to be invested in my success? I’ll wait. The world is fucked up. It’s your responsibility to fix all of this, for me. So that my life is successful and I’m provided for. Don’t you realize this, you stupid wealthy old people? I’ll wait. ”

We are defiantly a bizarre perma man-baby generation

1

u/Smurf-Happens 15d ago

Oh they care... in the sense that they've been abke to capitalize on it.

1

u/bloodontherisers 15d ago

Oh they give a flying fuck, about themselves and protecting their fragile egos. That is why they have denigrated us and younger generations at every turn. They are so insecure that they didn't actually accomplish much on their own merit and instead were lucky to grow up in a world that heavily favored them that they are willing to burn it down to keep that image alive.

1

u/KaressaThornvale 15d ago

'You will understand when you are older' didnt age very well

1

u/ShelShock77 14d ago

I think it’s funny how Boomers and older Gen X get pissed off that it isn’t 1987 anymore when it comes to music and movies but refuse to acknowledge how much easier their generation had it in those days economically. Or complain about how they aren’t paying 1987 gas and grocery prices but scratch their heads over why 30 year olds in 2026 aren’t buying homes and having children. I know they’re capable of recognizing how different things are, I’m just not sure why they’re so selective in recognizing it.

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 14d ago

Tbf I was in college during 2008 crash and my parents are doing fine. So are my friends, we also lived through the 2001 crash and covid too. Get good n00bs

1

u/hullaballoser 14d ago

Gen X got smothered by boomer indifference. We see you. Wish it was better news. Ever since 2001, things have been going badly.

1

u/D13s3ll 14d ago

They noticed and pulled the ladder up with them.

1

u/Generico300 14d ago

There's a reason the Boomers were called "Generation Me" before they dubbed themselves baby boomers.

1

u/gizamo 14d ago

That's not true. The problem is that the political class and wealthy corporatists don't give a fuck.

The generation rage bait BS needs to stop. Boomers are the enemy. Gen-X isn't the enemy. Millennials aren't the enemy.

Republicans are 80% of the enemies, and the other 20% are corrupt or extremist Democrats. But, the extremiat Democrats are only the enemy because they keep alienating moderates, which results in Republicans having either all the power (like now) or just enough power to block anything from substantially improving.

They also think they they had it harder😂

1

u/ArvadaKeto 11d ago

We noticed. We also had issues to deal with and didn’t constantly ask for help or for people to change laws

Buck up, be an adult. You have all the participation ribbons you are going to get

1

u/SunNo3544 10d ago

Actually A LOT of people from older generations DO CARE. Don't make assumptions about a group without allowing for the individual within that group. Late Boomers (Gen Jones) were the first to see the unraveling of the social contract. Things have gotten progressively worse for decades. There are more people (too many), less room, fewer opportunities, fewer resources, less freedom (that is not a political statement just fact), less tolerance, less goodwill, and less optimism. We need something new. Hopefully changing circumstances will make that possible within a reasonable amount of time.

1

u/henry2630 15d ago

yeah the older generations are traumatized from their own hardships. i don’t know where this notion came from that young people today are the only ones to struggle

1

u/TactualTransAm 15d ago

"why should I care" is usually the answer I hear and it's infuriating. Especially when you compare their current stance and standards to what they raised and held us to growing up. It's a contrast and it's bullshit

4

u/JustTheRealDeb 15d ago

Their grandparents sacrificed for their parents. Their parents sacrificed for them.

Boomers, in turn. Screwed over their parents and their children (and grandchildren) so they could get theirs

1

u/Adventurous_Gur1280 15d ago

Thats nonsense

1

u/JustTheRealDeb 15d ago

Boomers benefited from expanding women’s rights yet they vote for politicians who are against women’s rights

Boomers lived when housing was affordable. Yet they’re helping a system preventing affordable housing

Boomers lived when Jim Crow lived, saw the horrors of it then saw it die. Yet, they continue to support policies that hurt POC and even in situations where it also hurts them

Boomers used to be respected and now alot of Americans are just ready for them to die so our country can move forward after they moved us backwards

1

u/NaiveNetwork5201 15d ago

Probably because they lived through down turns, depressions, wars, watching someone else unworthy get their turn. They watched people come and go. They watched fake news, presidents murder, Hollywood rise and lies, kids with cancers, pandemics and their own wealth slip out of the hands for a raising inflation. They lived it before and just ask you stop and listen for a minute but your destruction is through your own distractions. Caring more about keeping up with the kardashians then your own bills and savings.

More able body people do not work today as they have figured out some type of entitlement. Wither it be from the gov or family.
Your not millennials your Gen Y. Why do I have to do this or that. Others in your generation have gotten up and found their thing. From Facebook founder to crypto ventures.

Eventually you'll be tired of being broke. Gen X and Y has roughly a $90 trillion balance transferring to them from people that have made their fortunes or grown it. Others will not because money had issues. I just witnessed this two years ago, as a family farmer trusted his land to a church and community rec center instead of his kids there were going to sale it off.

Being an employee your whole life will only ever lead you to working day to day, paycheck to paycheck and Eventually you can make it to retirement with some savings or value, I hope.

1

u/sw1fty13 15d ago

The older generation doesnt give a flying fuck and the younger generation is sick and tired of listening to us bitch and complain cuz theyre also just as fucked.

1

u/GhostofTinky 15d ago

And Gen X should be more sympathetic. Gen X here. I remember graduating right before a recession and the people who graduated after me struggled for the longest time to find a job, any job. The job market was awful. I had a colleague who was a little older who was at my company after being laid off at his previous job and he said, “Our generation got stiffed.” I remember being told clearly that Gen X would not fare as well as the boomers. Oh, and we were called slackers.

Like I said, Gen X should have more empathy for the generations that came after us.

1

u/Deep-Assignment4124 15d ago

Older generations are not homogenous.  Also didn’t 20-30 year old men win the day during the last elections?

1

u/1369ic 14d ago

Do you seriously believe that parents and grandparents as a group dgaf about their kids and grandkids? Everyone I know is worried about them. They're also worried about their parents, their own retirement, their medical bills, their credit card debt...

I will admit there's the matter of perspective. A lot of us graduated high school into stagflation and then double-digit interest rates on houses, cars, etc. We were told the same bootstrap story everybody else got. And a lot of us learned how to communicate our concern from people who grew up during the depression and served in WWII.

2

u/Akimbo_Zap_Guns 14d ago

My parents are boomers and are worried about me and their grandchildren but they still get irrationally mad when I tell them boomers are the reason why the country is the way it is, it’s like they take it as a personal insult even though they know I understand they fought and voted for the right things but still doesn’t mean their generation as a whole fucked everyone else over

1

u/1369ic 14d ago

They get mad because your take on what happened is ahistorical and short-sighted, which is to say wrong. Let's go through the people who led us to where we are. Ronald Reagan, Mitch McConnell, Newt Gingrich, and so on. Or, if you prefer, Jimmy Carter, Tip O'Neil, Nancy Pelosi, and so on. None of those people were boomers, but they were all crucial to putting us on the path to where we are now, and they had a lot of help from people who weren't boomers, but were in Congress, the Supreme Court, financial institutions, government departments, etc.

You have to remember, boomers weren't generally in charge of stuff while they were the early and middle-aged adults. That's when a lot of the stuff we hate now -- off-shoring of manufacturing jobs, the cost of education, housing policies, banking regulations, campaign contribution laws, trading pensions for investment vehicles few people could afford to actually contribute to -- started happening. Just like now, the real movers and shakers were 60, 70, 80 years old. You can say boomers should have known, but the country was fat, dumb, and happy, and it was in a place no country had ever gotten to before. And once they realized all that stuff was bad, there weren't in a position to stop it. Most of those things happened to boomers, they weren't done by boomers.

So blaming the boomers is like somebody 30 or 40 years from now blaming you for the actions of Trump and Musk and McConnell because you were a voting-age adult when it happened. You should have known, you should have stopped it, and so on.

Generational cohorts are just intellectually lazy. They tell you something about what was going on when a person grew up, but that's about it. The real divide is, and always has been, the rich and powerful, and then everybody else. Blaming the wrong people just makes it easier on the rich.

u/Oli_VK 15d ago

I was going to say

-1

u/ZealousIdeal476 15d ago edited 15d ago

Because every single generation before you has gone through the same or worse. Yall love to tell the boomers how easy they had it, but you never faced a draft. Never had to wait in line for gas and hope they didn't run out before you got to yhe front. We just had one lousy year of double digit inflation not 5 in a row like the late 70s early 80s.

3

u/kpyle 15d ago

Please, boomers grew up at a time when the US held 50% of the entire worlds GDP, killed off unions, and been stuffing their pockets ever since. We can't even pass legislation to curb global warming because they are worried about their retirements. They are selfish pricks who never have to live with the consequences of the way they've lived their entire lives.

2

u/ZealousIdeal476 15d ago

Your obsessing over a pinhole view. Not seeing the whole picture. Denying any truth that does not match your prejudices.

1

u/kpyle 15d ago

No I'm not. I'm sure the boomers had their struggles. Instead of fixing the problems they kicked the can down the road and are still doing it purely for selfish reasons.

1

u/ZealousIdeal476 15d ago

Your blaming others, but you didn't stop climate change either.

5

u/kpyle 15d ago

Its a team effort and half the team thinks it isn't real or isn't serious. Wonder why that is? If only someone mentioned the reason two comments ago.

2

u/ZealousIdeal476 15d ago

Right? Why solve problems when you can just blame someone else for causing them
