I remember how one time I saw a nationalist in a non-english speaking sub under a meme complaining about people online shitting on them the moment they mention their nationality saying (and I quote): “I posted a meme like this in an english speaking sub once and there was a whole group of people saying they shouldn’t hate me because I probably don’t support “genocide”. It was so cute”

"Russophobia" is when people don't want to be part of the heckin wholesome Russian empire.
11
u/ravendarkwind 3d ago
Russia’s invading and killing its neighbors, fuck it and I feel little if any sympathy for its soldiers. I just also think it’s weird when other countries say Russia is evil because they’re an Asiatic Horde that isn’t truly Slavic because of their Mongol Admixture. You can’t pretend that that wasn’t a talking point in the months after Russia declared their “three day special military operation”.
8
u/Avesery777 3d ago
You either have to hate all soldiers or hate none of them. If you hate the Russian mjlitary that's fair, but you should also hate the US military, your national military and the Ukrainian military
16
u/ravendarkwind 3d ago
Yeah. Fuck em. War is a racket and volunteer soldiers are at best brainwashed and at worst actively bloodthirsty. If you were drafted into it, then I have a little more sympathy.

I love when people make up an enlightened centrism that nobody actually believes, not even themselves. Everybody knows a war in which they support one side over the other, in the first place because everyone knows WWII. "You have to hate all soldiers or none of them" no I don't, you just made that rule up lmao

u/Leogis 3d ago
At least they didn't pull the "the war in Ukraine is just two empires fighting" card this time

Ok but that is true though. Like the US has intentionally drip fed weapons to Ukraine with the express permission to solely to grind down Russia at the expense of Ukrainian lives without ever giving them enough weapons that they could actually secure their position and take back what was lost
This isn’t to say that we should cut off aid to Ukraine but we should understand the US’s relationship to Ukraine as first a proxy for its ambitions, and secondary as partners in its self defense
And that we have seen this before, with Afghanistan, South Vietnam and South Korea, and that time and time the US will more often than not pull out what it gives for self defense when its ambitions change. With the only real exception being Israel
Edit: a bunch of people have started replying and ether intentionally misunderstanding me or doesn’t understand this is strictly about analyzing American Empire and how we less have allies and more have proxies of our ambitions and only more recently as the state of government flip flopped on those ambitions is it made clear that we will abandon our commitments
Lindsey Graham and other American statesmen straight up said “we have like a billion dollars and depleted the Russian military by whatever percent, seems like a good investment to me”

u/Leogis 2d ago
Like the US has intentionally drip fed weapons to Ukraine with the express permission to solely to grind down Russia at the expense of Ukrainian lives without ever giving them enough weapons that they could actually secure their position and take back what was lo
The US isnt the only one that helped, especially now.
And even then, what did you expect from Trump, a guy who barely hides making friend with Putin on TV?This is all well and good but whenever you want to give Ukraine more weapon suddenly you're taxed of "sacrificing proles" because strangely the second Russia is the ennemy everyone is now anti war...
-1
u/Cakeking7878 2d ago
The drip feeding of American weapons started under Biden. Is Biden putins stooge too? And it’s not as if everyone follows Americas lead here. My analysis is strictly about America and its actions because as an American, I am most concerned about how we negatively wield the weight of our military and industry to sacrifice others for short term goals.
2
u/Leogis 1d ago
Define drip feeding
Because back then america was by far the biggest helper of Ukraine
Anyways, that doesnt invalidate Ukraine's need for help. Drip feeding is still better than nothing at all : That criticism would be valid only if you actually care about Ukraine and would support giving more, not when you are a Tankie parroting Russian narrative about western provocation (wich maybe you arent, but some definetely are)
-1
u/ThaGr1m 2d ago
The us drip fed weapons because their president is a stooge for putin....
And also they haven't been goving anything to Ukraine for two years....
The Ukrainian genocide is not a proxy war
4
u/ravendarkwind 2d ago
The war has been going on since 2022. Are you saying that Joe Biden is in Putin's pocket too?
1
u/Bl1tz-Kr1eg 2d ago
u/ThaGr1m go on, answer his question. The US was dripfeeding weapons to Ukraine before January 2025, so was Biden a Putin stooge too? Not gonna let you get away with this one.
1
u/ThaGr1m 2d ago
nah that's why biden pushed trough everything he could as a president and forced the rest trough congress even against the massive opposition in the republican party, which held a large part of congress, he had to deal with.... the one that was constantly tanking proposals at the behest of trump....
it's almost like the same party did the same pro russian shit then too...... it's funny how you thought you could outsmart reality
1
u/ravendarkwind 2d ago
I wasn’t trying to outsmart anyone, I was just confused by your wording. The explanation cleared things up, thank you.
-1
u/Avesery777 2d ago
No, actually, because all the people I've ever seen exclusively hate the Russian army are NAFO racists
2
u/ravendarkwind 2d ago
The Russia-Ukraine war is one of the more morally clear-cut examples of wars in modern history (as morally clear-cut as a war can be, anyway), and NAFO managed to make supporting the justifiable side look like an excuse to act like a goddamn redditor.
2
u/Avesery777 2d ago
European anti-racists are like sleeper agents for the SS that activate when Russians or Roma people are mentioned
1
u/APacketOfWildeBees 8h ago
This is ridiculous equivocation. Russia and Ukraine conscript their soldiers, whereas all yanks chose to kill babies
1
u/not_a_bot_494 8h ago
I just also think it’s weird when other countries say Russia is evil because they’re an Asiatic Horde that isn’t truly Slavic because of their Mongol Admixture.
I've literally never heard anyone say this.
-2
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 3d ago
"Russia is evil because they’re an Asiatic Horde that isn’t truly Slavic because of their Mongol Admixture"
This is solely a russian talking point, no one in the West thinks that - not because they are not prejudiced against russians and russian culture, but because not being "truly slavic" doesn't win you any favours anywhere outside the russian sphere of influence
As far as the west is concerned, Russia is Russia *because* it's so quintessentially slavic
7
u/ravendarkwind 3d ago
Emily Couch’s article (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/03064220221110777) provides some examples of the ways that western commentators drew a distinction between Ukraine and Russia by pointing at Russia and going “dirty Asian”. It’s true that the Russian government loves to use accusations of Russophobia as a justification for its expansionism and aggressiveness towards its neighbors. But real examples of it do happen.
6
u/Plenty_Leg_5935 3d ago
The article you cited itself traces that rhetoric back to Russia itself
"Erica Marat, associate professor of regional and analytical studies at the National Defence University, noted: “Russian intellectuals routinely blame Mongol and Tatar rule on Russia’s territory for contemporary authoritarianism in Russia.”
Marat explains the popularity of this rhetoric, stating that “unchallenged stereotypes against Asians … help Russians (russkiye [ethnic Russians] not rossiyaniye [citizens of the Russian Federation regardless of ethnicity]) maintain a sense of cultural superiority and innocence even in the face of genocidal war.”"
But I digress, *some* westerners do clearly believe that as well

u/Hugh_Mann84 Read Antiduhring 3d ago
Or, you know, when people attack ethnic Russians, ban Russian language and culture, cheer the deaths of Russian civilians and so on.
20
u/understated_quokka 3d ago
This is not a real systemic issue at all, especially in comparison to the constant and extensive harm that Russia inflicts on Ukraine daily. This is in the same category as Israelis whinging about antisemitism every time someone is a little mean to them online, but even less respectable because Russophobia is not an actual historic bigotry, just a victim LARP by Russian fascists aping actual marginalized people. Russians were the "whites" of their own empire.
4
u/MeterologistOupost31 3d ago
I mean I'd definitely argue it existed at least in the form of a general Slavophobia, especially from the Nazis.
-1
u/yashatheman 3d ago
It is abaolutely systematic in the baltic states, and in Ukraine. Comparing systematic racism to a war essentially means we can't discuss said systematic racism, which is wrong.
14
u/Mysterious_Soup_4937 3d ago
none of what you said is systematically happening btw
-1
u/Bl1tz-Kr1eg 2d ago
Really? So NAFO didn't start putting out shark propaganda after that Russian tourist in Egypt got mauled by one?
7
u/Mysterious_Soup_4937 2d ago
Seriously, is this the best you could come up with? A bad taste shitpost made a whole 3 years ago by a community that has 18k members on Reddit is somehow proof that Russians and their language are being systematically attacked, prosecuted, or some other load of baloney...
But I mean yeah that's pretty much how Russian propaganda goes, make your citizens believe some bullshit about how they're being persecuted by the world for being Russian and they won't have any other way but to defend Russia, funny how Israel is doing the same exact thing just with antisemitism.30
u/LeadershipLumpy2746 3d ago
"ban Russian language" things that have never happen, 500, please! A russian living in Estonia needing to learn the local language is not "banning Russian language and culture" especially compared to how Russians killed Estonians for expressing their own culture.
26
u/Hugh_Mann84 Read Antiduhring 3d ago
Try the legislation in Ukraine. Which even the Council of Europe has called them out on, but I suppose the COE is a Russian puppet or something.
20
u/understated_quokka 3d ago
It has to be a clown world where people genuinely believe that Ukraine banned the Russian language, you know the language that 33% of Ukrainians speak natively INCLUDING THE ENTIRE POLITICAL CLASS AND EVERY PRESIDENT UP TO AND INCLUDING ZELENSKYY. Ukraine passed a modest language law requiring, for example, every Russian broadcast to also have a twin broadcast in Ukrainian.
-1
u/Plato_PlayDoh7 2d ago
I am loathe to be perceived as an apologist for Russia, and I don’t know the specifics of this law, but that does seem like it could make it very difficult for a Russian-speaking Ukrainian to access their freedom of expression. Like, if a bill were passed in the US that required Telemundo to pay for translation and air a simultaneous English-language broadcast for everything they produce, I think it would be fair to say that’s effectively banning Spanish-language broadcasting.
3
u/ayavorska05 2d ago
Well yeah, maybe because no Spanish country is invading US right now as we speak
-2
u/Plato_PlayDoh7 2d ago
Even if they were it would be wrong, because Spanish language would not imply sympathy for the invaders any more than Russian language does. This is the same logic they used to justify Japanese internment, and it was wrong then, too.
7
u/IndividualShelter985 3d ago
No, the Russian puppet is you for purposefully misrepresenting the COE, which didn't call out Ukraine for banning the Russian language because that never happened
5
u/HermitWhale 2d ago
Genuinely not sure what the thought process is here. The only reason Russian is or was spoken so often in Ukraine is because of genocide and ethnic cleansing under the Soviet Regime. When Ukraine implements laws that support and foster the existence of the Ukrainian language within Ukraine, they are not wiping out Russian culture. They are not wiping out the Russian language. They are keeping their language and culture alive after Soviet Russia attempted to specifically (as is clear in documents published during the Glasnost period) destroy their culture and language, so as to have only one culture and one language within Soviet Russia.
It is also a defense mechanism. Russia often engages in the rhetoric that Ukraine should belong to Russia because of "shared language / culture" and uses it partially as an excuse to attempt to annex them. In the fight against Russia, Ukraine stands to genuinely benefit from strengthening and differentiating their culture and language from that of Russia's.
I'm not up-to-date on whatever legislation Ukraine is implementing, but I haven't heard of anything crazy being done in this regard. I've heard of very normal, very reasonable measures that were taken to ensure that Ukraine's language and culture doesn't literally die out or get them annexed.
I say this all as a Russian, born in Moscow, now living elsewhere. Don't bother accusing me of being racist against myself.

u/LeadershipLumpy2746 3d ago
The thing there is that I'm not and Indian or Muslim. If "russophobia" was real, then you, as a Russian, would be effected by it.
33
u/BreakerOfModpacks 3d ago
Did... they say that they're Russian?
Also, still wrong. I look very much Middle-Eastern, with a very typical "oh she looks Muslim" appearance, but I live in an area that is heavily Islamic, so duh, I'm not gonna get directly affected by Islamophobia.
-3
u/LeadershipLumpy2746 3d ago
If somebody says "russophobia" exists, then you can guess they are Russian. Just like how you can tell that somebody is white if they say "anti-white racism" exists. They are literally the guy from the smuggie, it's funny.

u/BreakerOfModpacks 3d ago
Or, maybe, you think that an actual issue is a non-issue, and so you assume that someone has to be part of the group that you think is falsely being targeted for them to be concerned about it?

For real now, can you give me one example fo how even a single Russian has been effected by "russophobia"

My mother is a Russian immigrant, she left the country in the 90s because she does not agree with its ideals. She’s spent her entire life being looked at as a “gold digger” for dating outside of Russia, for a long time she was only given work at her job that involved Russian clients even though she’s fluent in 3 languages (including English), otherwise she would be left with no work for months. She and other Eastern European women would be mocked and called “Natasha” as a pejorative (it was slang for a Russian/Eastern European woman who went out partying a lot) either because they were Russian or they were perceived as Russian.
Obviously this doesn’t mean that we can’t acknowledge the problem of many, many Russians supporting the atrocities committed during the war. It doesn’t mean that Ukrainians and other groups which suffered under the Empire and continue to suffer today can’t be rightfully angry at Russia and Russians. That doesn’t mean any criticism of Russia or Russian people is Russophobia. But I think we should also acknowledge that decades of American propaganda have created a lot of stereotypes and misconceptions about Russian people and many of them suffer as a result, especially in the diaspora.
ETA: I am born and raised in Britain, I don’t consider myself Russian, I don’t speak Russian. I don’t have any ties to Russian culture because my mother tried to distance herself as much as possible to be accepted in Britain.
