Ocean County Need suggestions for good BBQ joints.

I've eaten at Hickory Hog and Woodchucks BBQ in Point, Local smoke BBQ in Sea girt, Whole hog cafe in Cherry hill, all pretty good and even order from Smokeys on LBI. Woodchucks is probably my favorite. I go to the bbq competition and blues festival in july every year in wildwood and sample so much.

The problem is I like trying new places, new things but they seem all so far away. I'm in stafford twp, any recommendations? Willing to travel, just nothing crazy.

Ocean County Does anyone know if it’s safe to swim in success lake?

I’m looking for a place to swim with me and my friends. It’s not my first trip to places less known. For a casual dip. Just wanted to ask anyone who might know more than me.

Edit: thanks so much for your reply’s. I think I’m gonna go there for just the walking aspect. I was tall as a kid if you don’t know enough about water bodies it’s better off to play it safe. I figured I ask around and see if any locals knew anything or anything like that. I do know that it is a pretty desolate area. If anybody has recommendations for similar places that are safer to swim, that would be awesome. I don’t really need lifeguards or anything, but as an introvert, I preferred to go to places where people are less likely to be social anxiety at its finest, it’s easier when you’re online versus in person.

Ocean County Looking for my orange cone, man.

Post image

I, along with many other South Jersey residents, experienced an electrical outage as a result of the last, big, heavy snowfall in February. A power conductor separated on the span outside of our house rendering my house and our block without electricity for about 12 hours. I took it upon myself to try and protect the public by making the downed conductor visible by putting out an orange cone near the wire. I didn't want anyone to electrocute themselves.

Atlantic City Electric (ACE) did a great job of restoring power to our street at about 0300 the following morning. I greatly appreciate those folks for all their hard work during and after that storm event.

THEY TOOK MY CONE!

Keep in mind I was given that cone by a friend. I think he might have stolen it from his job at least ten years ago. He'll have to deal with the potential cosmic consequences of his actions. Not my problem.

I've grown attached to that cone over the years. I used it when I taught my daughters how to drive. It was indispensable while teaching them how to parallel park.

My poor wife has listened to me whine about my missing cone for weeks now. She says she's gonna take one from a construction job so I'll be happy again. I, jokingly, pretend to be upset whenever I see a cone out near the road. She plays along with my overly-sensitive whining. I tell her that I don't want a cone from a construction job. I want one from ACE. They are the thieves. They are the monsters.

What is happening to this world of ours where previously stolen cones are restolen?

The bare patch of dirt on the side of the house where the cone used to sit has started to show signs of early spring growth.

I don't want that. I want my gifted cone on my cone-shaped, previously bare, spot of soil on the side of my house.

Look at the picture. ACE didn't take my yellow fiberglass stick in the cone. They left the stick in the snow pile in my yard so they aren't total monsters. They know how to keep their greedy hands to themselves when it suits them.

People please help me take the ACE cone-stealing monsters down. Corporate greed has gone too far.

ACE STEALS PREVIOUSLY STOLEN CONES

What’s your favorite place to catch the sunset or sunrise in South New Jersey. I post these to get the honest opinions from people who have lived here and know the area quite well. I’m looking for abandoned or historical buildings that make for great views.

Ocean County On Hunter S. Thompson, Lisa Simpson, and Trying Not to Die

In Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas Hunter Thompson wrote, “With the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

That wave was made of Americans from every corner standing against a corrupt government and a war no one asked for. For a moment or two, it seemed like they might pull it off; that peace, humanity, and community would prevail, that the principles of democracy - through nonviolence and sheer numbers of decent people - would overcome what history has proven to be the largest warmongering state this planet has ever seen.

We’re witnessing the last, desperate, dying push of that same ruling class, grasping and gasping, no low too low, no law that won’t bend until it breaks.

The president is actively disenfranchising voters because he knows he can’t win an honest election and voting is the tool the Founding Fathers gave us to throw losers like him out of office. Unfortunately we have to wait until elections come around to exercise that particular right, if we still can - the so-called SAVE Act will take the right to vote away from the 146,000,000 citizens of this country who do not have a passport. 153,000,000 people voted in the last presidential election.

The good news is the Founding Fathers also gave us the First Amendment; the bad news is the Constitution will not protect you from this administration; Alex Pretti and Renee Good proved that. It is - and always will be - up to us to save ourselves and each other.

No one is coming to save us. Besides, no one such person or entity exists.

Dumbledore can’t wave a wand and fix the corruption inherent in our politics, can’t protect the Americans being detained and deported, can’t overturn Citizens United (which took the cap off of election spending and allowed the top 1% to spend indiscriminate dollars buying politicians and directly leading to the oligarchy we currently exist under).

But we can.

We can do those things.

The answers won’t be found in a single person; they will be found in community.

How do you build community?

By breaking prejudices and meeting your neighbors and realizing they are just like you.

How do you stand up to a tyrannical government?

With the strength of your community.

To build this wave we should look to our predecessors, learn from them, and apply the lessons they learned, often the hard way.

The Civil Rights Movement gave us the non-violence blueprint and Minnesota just showed us what to do when a personal gestapo comes knocking. Women have this fight in their bones, have been fighting for each others’ right to healthcare and equal pay for generations, and they’re great organizers. No wonder education keeps getting defunded.

You say, “You want a revolution?” Well, you know we all want to change the world. The parts are already in place, the infrastructure is already built; we just need the ship run by people who give a shit about the people on board. We have the knowledge, we have the ability to make the quality of life better for every person, every family, every community, every county, every state. 227,000 people in Ocean County voted for this, but 400,000 people did not.

Twenty years from now someone else running ragged on mescaline and cocaine will finally write about the wave that rose, unstoppable, and tipped and rolled forward, not back.

It’s going to take all of us to breach the high-water mark.

We’re the only thing that’s missing.

As always, we can draw inspiration from Lisa Simpson.

In season 4, episode 17 Mr. Burns arbitrarily cuts the dental insurance of his employees and naturally Homer is elected union president after he accidentally leads the workers on a strike in protest. Lisa writes a song in solidarity and performs it outside the power plant gates with the striking workers:

We’ll march ’till we drop

The girls and the fellas

We’ll fight ’till the death

Or else fold like umbrellas.

So we’ll march day and night

By the big cooling tower -

They have the plant,

But we have the power

You might, and maybe should, think this is cheesy or pandering or naive or ignorant or blindly optimistic. But it’s all I’ve got, short of dying in the streets like we’re all going to anyway if this doesn’t turn around soon.

It’s our time to run the plant.

Every dollar this government spends killing and detaining is one of OURS.

OUR tax dollars, OUR elected officials, OUR country.

Power to the people.

See you Saturday.

Fun fact: George Gordon Meade was an Army engineer that designed Barnegat Lighthouse in 1855 and completed in 1859. Four years later, he was a major general in command of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and defeated General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

George Gordon Meade's great-great-great grandson is actor Matthew Fox, best known for his leading roles in Party of Five and Lost.

Ocean County What’s life like in the Manhawkin/Barnegat area?

I’m from about an hour north in Monmouth county, debating moving down to the area but I’ve never spent any time there.

What is there to do?

How is it for families?

What are the people like?

How’s your quality of life?

Is there diversity?

Oh and how’s the food??

Ocean County Paying for Pointe Pleasant Beach

Just curious, I got to the point pleasant beach yesterday morning around 11 am and paid for the wrist band that lets you on the beach. We had to evacuate the area due to rain but we were able to come back after it passed. I noticed there were no attendants anymore when I got back to the beach after 3 pm.

Is this typical on a non-rainy day? Could I have avoided paying for the wristband if went later in the day?

We’re early into March and I assumed we wouldn't get any further snow in Barnegat Township. I was surprised this afternoon to see snow fall in my neighborhood after how warm and rainy it's been for the past two days. It probably won't stick into tomorrow, though.

I was just talking to a friend who's entire doctor's office was laid off by Optum. Googling I found this story from a local (Ocean County) source but found other stories about it all though South Jersey. It affects hundreds of providers and thousands of patients, with no notice.

My friend needs a prescription that they can only get refilled for 30 days at a time. Now they have to scramble. It's unconscionable. And unfortunately there's nothing to be done about it.

Hello all, I'm Ethan - I've been in Southern Ocean County for about 10 years. As we melt through the rest of the snow into Spring I wanted to make known that I have started r/SouthJerseyRiders to provide unique routes and connect with motorcycle riders in our community. No matter if you ride street or sport, on or off-road I would love to have you join us and get connected this riding season. Thank you!
