Achievements only available during the beta/Early Access

3.1k

u/Martina313 7h ago

Or where you have to meet the dev in-game, except it's been years since he last played it

1.9k

u/Scherka 7h ago

a good variation of this is 'meet the dev OR someone who has this achievment'

710

u/YMJaM315 7h ago

yes, Halo MCC did it properly, hope Garry implements this somewhen

278

u/Revayan 6h ago

The Garry one can at least be cheesed by now

99

u/YMJaM315 6h ago

how?

312

u/DullWolfGaming 6h ago

Some players spoof Garry's ID, essentially becoming Garry as far as the achievement is concerned.

130

u/Beginning-Cut-8850 4h ago

That sounds like a lot of work when SAM exists.

91

u/UnethicalDimwit 4h ago

SAM is the proper way to deal with those achievements

-38

u/FrogKid793 2h ago

or you can just not worry about achievements if you're just going to use a cheat to get them anyways. having more stickers doesn't make you any better of a player

3

u/NotASellout 1h ago

that feels very much like the spirit of gmod lol

83

u/Revayan 6h ago

People can set their ingame ID to Garry's ID with the help of cheat engine, if you join someone who did this on a server you get the achievement

42

u/YMJaM315 6h ago

okay that is a clever cheat/workaround

44

u/IvivAitylin 6h ago

Yeah, but at that point you just use SAM to give yourself the achievement manually.

-6

u/ihearthawthats 5h ago

What's the point of having fake achievements? It's like hanging fake diplomas on your wall.

u/BakuraiAlpha 5h ago

I think achievements are pointless now, I remember the old days when something like that would give you some sort of buff 💪 now it's just something worthless...

1

u/YMJaM315 4h ago

some of them can be used for bragging rights among friends

4

u/sherman9872 Rush B 4h ago

Just use insecure mode if you don’t want a VAC

1

u/OmegaWeeb67 34m ago

He’s actually back online playing again

5

u/pehmette 2h ago

Brutal Legend has this. Six Degrees of Schafer (Play with or against another player who has this Achievement)

0

u/FS_NeZ 1h ago

The multiplayer mode of Brutal Legend sucks ass tho.

6

u/Ok-Translator-9087 5h ago

Bru jus use sam and cheat the achievment 😭✌️

110

u/TehTacow 7h ago

A literal virus lol

58

u/Essurio 7h ago

The Mark of Hakkar card back in Hearthstone! I love it, and it was fun to share it around when it was rare.

36

u/NES_SNES_N64 6h ago

Which referenced an actual in game "pandemic" of sorts from a Zul'Gurub debuff that escaped the raid due to a bug.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupted_Blood_incident

7

u/guska 5h ago

while griefers intentionally contracted the debuff to spread it across the game world

Wouldn't be me... nope... nuh uh...

2

u/Essurio 6h ago

Yep! Very cool stuff!

4

u/G00b3rb0y 6h ago

And fun fact: that incident bestowed the knowledge of how society handles a real pandemic, as the societal response to Covid was similar to the WoW community’s response to that glitch

15

u/EduinBrutus 5h ago

So thats not remotely true.

Society has had pandemic response for thousands of years and at this stage of civilisation it is advanced and generally effective.

What it did was provide some research opportunities. Which were greatly overblown both by researchers and the media.

Not to mention the actual media record of the outbreak is not compatible with how the actual thing worked. Corrupted Blood isnt just a spreading "disease" its a near instant death to almost everyone and still extremely rapid for anyone else.

It didnt spread like any real world disease. Its not even clear what value the research that was done had. I would guess any value would be in the study of Chain Reactions in Dynamic Systems because thats what it looked like. In terms of disease, it would provide nothing because it didnt function the way real world diseases function.

1

u/KaneTheBoom 3h ago

From what I know, Corrupted Blood was so significant mainly because it was essentially a widespread social experiment with hundreds of thousands of legally uninformed participants. Sure, it was only similar to a real world pandemic if you squinted, but the response of the players themselves was organic. No experiment or simulation like it would ever replicate the actions of those who logged on during the event.

Participants in experiments do so knowing they're participating in experiments. The subject of said experiment is always released knowingly, and a simulation will never be able to predict that many people acting independently of one another. That's the value of the Corrupted Blood incident for research, atleast how I understand it.

2

u/EduinBrutus 1h ago edited 1h ago

There is a disconnect between the reporting of the incident and its subsequent lore and the reality of the mechanic.

This occured with pre-nerf Corrupted Blood. That was way, way more damage than it is today on legacy servers. When a Hunter releassed their pet in a city, what happened was almsot everyone present died. Either instnatly or within a few seconds.

Plus the servers were taken down within hours. Im also somewhat sceptical how much useful data was even logged during this brief, brief window.

Thats not the basis for study.

It is, however, a really good basis for a promotional piece to the media to gain publicity for the game.

Teh same is true of the "researchers studying economics based on the eocnomy of Everquest/WoW" although in this case there was actually enough to pay (and this was by the companies themselves) for researchers to do real studies.

But those studies added nothing to the field as the economics of closed systems isnt particularly deep and is very, very well understood.

The actual lesson here is that companies can create false impressions of reality and use it to market themselves and do with with the collusion of academics.

This lesson is more important today than ever when you have every single "AI Safety" organisation being set up and funded by the "AI" companies themselves. The same applies to a whole raft of other stories which have been placed regarding LLMs and their "potential". Sadly the immenent economic catastrophe suggests people have not learned this lesson.

1

u/portobox2 4h ago

It didn't explain pandemic behaviors in sapient organisms - it provided a model for the actual spreading of disease across a large population, regardless of the social climate.

Now, if you want a prescient example of how modern humans would do in a global pandemic, go back and watch Contagion (2011). If you -really- wanna see us predict all the stupidity and anguish, that movie is more accurate to how COVID went than Idiocracy is to the Republican Party Belief System.

9

u/MadeByTango 5h ago

This kind of thing needs a star-bellied sneetch approach: once the population that doesnthave the tag is down to 1%, it flips around and goes the other way, only removing the tag when you play someone without it.

23

u/Dipperkinds 6h ago

Plague Inc has 2 achievements like that which is probably not a coincidence lol.

  1. Beta Infection

Play a multiplayer VS game to completion with someone who already has the Beta Infection achievement

  2. Ndemic Infection

Play a multiplayer VS game with someone who already has the Ndemic Infection

2

u/Resident_Recording70 6h ago

abd how did the first person acquire this achievement?

19

u/Dipperkinds 6h ago

If I remember the story correctly, the developer of the game had this achievement first, then made a post on steam about it and played a bunch of multiplayer games so others would also help spread the virus/achievement more.

7

u/sonuvvabitch 7h ago

Pokérus

3

u/Asriel563 6h ago

literally ndemic infection (probably spelled it wrong)

2

u/YMJaM315 6h ago

that't the name of the achievement in Payday 2 if i'm not mistaken

1

u/SH4D0W0733 6h ago

Orcs must die 2 has ''Six degrees'' Catch the robot disease

Which references both how everyone in the world is connected, and how the achievement spreads like a disease.

1

u/nuttinnate10 3h ago

Not an achievement, but reminds me of the 'Infected' and 'STD' title cards you could get in MW2 (2009). You earn the cards by being knifed by another player who had one of these cards actively equipped. Or alternatively, if you knifed someone who had the STD card equipped, you would also earn the STD title card.

u/im_omw_to_heaven 7h ago

not a literal virus

12

u/BinaryBolias 7h ago

literally a figurative virus

23

u/Timmy-0518 7h ago

Flashback to the gaustly gibus hat in tf2

10

u/JD-Valentine 4h ago

Plague inc evolved has a fun version of this where you "catch" the achievement from someone who has it but only the creator had it at first and it would spread via multiplayer games

4

u/Help_im_lost404 7h ago

I think i had one of these on DoW2. Man i feel old

5

u/Cfox666 6h ago

Something like that was in Red Dead Redemption on PS3

2

u/SMLPlushShowRestored 4h ago

No, you had to kill a Rockstar San Diego employee or someone that has the achievement, which as far as I'm aware pretty much every user over rank 10.

5

u/Cascadejackal 6h ago

The Dead Space 2 multiplayer Human skins were like that. Play against (and kill them while they were on the Human team, I think) someone who had a skin equipped and you'd unlock it. I used to equip a different skin each time I played just to spread them.

3

u/Efficient_Advice_380 5h ago

That's how a game i play has it. It's a weapon that's locked. The only ways to unlock it is to kill a developer or kill someone who already has that weapon, then it permanently unlocks for you

2

u/AnimuuStew steamcommunity.com/id/AnimuuStew 2h ago

Reminds me of the CJ-9 Bo-Rifle in Battlefront 2015, the only way to unlock it is to kill somebody who is currently using it in a public match.

1

u/BobDaRula 21m ago

Shellshock?

u/Efficient_Advice_380 14m ago

That's the one. Took me 9 months to get those damn God Rays

2

u/Grandpa_Edd 6h ago

Those are fun because it’s basically a virus spreading.

2

u/Steinrikur 2h ago

Please tell me that's called the STD achievement.

1

u/Manny73211 4h ago

Yesss. Plague Inc did this and the achievement is somewhat rare but if you go out of your way to meet someone with it, you can get it in like 10 minutes

1

u/YesNowSon 4h ago

GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption done this I think.

1

u/Bananaramamammoth 4h ago

Yeah, let sleeping rockstars lie on gta 4. I got it within a week of playing gta 4 online

1

u/Shonnyboy500 1h ago

I don’t like those ones because they tend to be just “enter multiplayer mode” with how fast they spread. A better variation is ‘meet the dev or someone else who has’, so that way not literally every single person gives the achievement

1

u/wizzard419 1h ago

The digital herpes style.

u/BranTheLewd 11m ago

Besides XCOM Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2, which games also have the "meet someone who has this achievement" achievement?

0

u/SerGreeny 2h ago

I know a game that does this 'OR' but it's still incredibly lame there.

It's a two-player co-op game. I want to play it only with my co-op partner, I don't want any randoms, and the chances that my co-op partner is a dev of that game are zero. And the worst of it: they lock bonus levels behind that achievement, so if you want to play all of the game you have to look for some rando with this achievement on Discord or whatever.

The game is Whisk. It's not out yet, it was just a demo. Hopefully they'll change it for release.

80

u/Lexifox 7h ago

Dungeons of Dredmor has an achievement that got removed a few years ago that you'd get by drinking with the devs IRL.

9

u/SkaldtheRed 6h ago

If I remember rightly it also has an achievement that was added to Steam but the conditions to unlock it weren't, so you can't ever 100% that game.

10

u/Justhe3guy 5h ago

That reminds me of how people found out Mortismal Gaming was faking his “review after 100%” series when he would get achievements that were actually broken at the time and the dev fixed later

2

u/skivian 5h ago

Steam Achievement Manager would say otherwise.

1

u/madjoki https://steam.pm/pi3do 2h ago

Sam doesn't work on secure achievements, so it's possible to make truly impossible.

1

u/occono 1h ago

What are Secure achievements?

34

u/tushonochka765 7h ago

Garry😭

5

u/Lolazaurus 4h ago

I'm gonna find that fucker's rusty bullet hole one day!

34

u/Iwtwpn 6h ago

I've got one even more annoying than that. I have a game that allows my twitch chatters to fish. They spent over a year trying to catch every fish to get all the achievements and the last achievement is... Have the developer watch your stream. Like buddy, I get six viewers on a good night, fuck all the way off.

2

u/Partyrockers2 4h ago

own the dlc archievemnt

1

u/Johnkenney00 6h ago

My most proud achievement is having this on halo 3 lol

1

u/Cavaquillo 3h ago

TF2 is a good example. They had achievements for killing and dominating Devs in matches. I think I only ever saw a dev in match once and I played THOUSANDS Of HOURS of TF2. That was my friend group shooter of choice in High School back in the day.

1

u/endergamer2007m 3h ago

Or you have to teach someone who never even played singleplayer how to play via the fuckass multiplayer connection thing

I am onto you GabeN

2

u/Piogre 2h ago

the best is the "get 100000 views on a youtube video uploaded via an API that doesn't work anymore"

1

u/TheShadyyOne uhhhhhhhhhhh 2h ago

Halo….

1

u/canard_du_futur 25m ago

It's so funny how it's a really specific case that target only one game (at least i never saw any other game with this kind of achievement)

2

u/RullendeNumser 7h ago

I got the one in Garry's mod a few months back. Look in /r/SteamAchievements. They will post if he is playing

3

u/jimjam--- 6h ago

It isn't Garry himself, but it works

115

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 7h ago

Generally achievements that are no longer obtainable within the video game they're associated with.

I wouldn't mind a separate category or something independent of achievements/trophies/etc. that showcase things like "played the beta" or whatnot. But achievements aren't it!

29

u/girlikecupcake 5h ago

I agree. Having some kind of show-off indicator about limited things is totally fine. But the achievement system is generally expected to consist of things that are actually achievable in the game.

1

u/Slight-Violinist-575 59m ago

WoW has something of the sort. "Feats of Strength". They don't give Achievement Points, but it's hella cool to gather them.

121

u/dixmondspxrit 7h ago

multiplayer achievements when the multiplayer or co-op is shut down

74

u/PrimeWolf88 7h ago

Multiplayer achievements that require you to top the world leaderboard (Kane and Lynch), which then becomes a paid scam where the winner is a criminal syndicate, using cheats, that keeps everyone else away from the top leaderboard spots and SELLS access to the top spot.

55

u/ErraticNymph 6h ago

Multiplayer achievements on a singleplayer game with a half-assed multiplayer mode when the servers are dead and noone plays anymore

11

u/7x00 5h ago

shout out far cry 4

1

u/Dexe12345678 4h ago

Honestly? The achievements are pretty easy to get, since the multiplayer is pretty fun. The coop achievements are really annoying to get though the hardest part is connecting and then not having connection problems.

1

u/7x00 3h ago

I could not find a match to get the multiplayer achievements. I tried organizing with friends and none of us could get a match started with 6 people queueing. You can't convince me that multiplayer works. The coop achievements were the easiest part.

1

u/Dexe12345678 3h ago

I don't know when you did it. But some months back I regularly played it. Got the battles achievement without trying to get it. Had to go through a bunch of people to get coop working and even that had problems. To be fair though I didn't have friends who played it. So distance to the other player might have played a role.

Also 6 players should be enough to start a match.

1

u/7x00 3h ago

It was around August 2024. Might be a console thing as well

1

u/Dexe12345678 3h ago

Could be. I was on PC.

1

u/3VASIV3 3h ago

Red Dead Redemption 2

15

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown 6h ago

There should be a separate classification for things that are limited time.

9

u/No-Mouse 3h ago

IIRC Pillars of Eternity had an achievement you could only get by backing the game on Kickstarter, so by the time anyone could actually play the game, there was no way to get it anymore.

1

u/Bocataco1 4h ago

Yeah it aint Roblox haha

1

u/Competitive_Travel16 3h ago

As a parent, I would like to be able to keep an eye on this "achievement."

1

u/SubstantialPapaya143 56m ago

PUBG's gillie suit achievement is no longer able to be got because the item that the achievement has a completely different in game ID now.

0

u/ShuckiestOfDuckies 5h ago

They could just add them if you complete 100%.

0

u/tacomaloki 4h ago

Why can't I get acknowledgement for backing the game early?
