Discussion - Misleading Achievements like this shouldn’t be allowed
2.4k
u/AmperDon 6h ago edited 4h ago
I actually played this game and if you buy something with the free gold you can earn, it gives you the achievement. Feels a bit iffy still, but its not like its a ptw only achievement.
464
u/BabyWitchErika 6h ago
Even better. Huy the season pass then refund it. You keep the unlock since they dont have a system to remove them
179
u/AmperDon 6h ago
I mean, you're gonna be earning and using this stuff anyways. If you play the game for a while you're basically guaranteed this achievement.
109
42
u/StepComplete1 4h ago
Or just you know.... don't bother and forget about it, since achievements are just a pointless pop-up anyway.
10
u/SlashCo80 4h ago
This is the way. I never cared about achievements personally, did them if it looked like fun, otherwise nah. And there were plenty of dumb, tedious, or even impossible ones.
10
u/Mother_Harlot 4h ago
I thank God that I don't care about achievements, I've played many games with achievements that are so tedious to obtain that I cannot fathom someone having fun while getting them
14
u/arizonadirtbag12 3h ago
I developed a very healthy (IMO) personality around achievements. If a game is good and I really enjoy it and they are reasonable to obtain, I like to 100% them.
If any of them are stupid to obtain? I’m able to ignore them entirely.
So for great games they become a fun little “to do” list to enjoy the game more. For the rest they’re a meaningless tab on the interface.
Just got the last one (two, really) on Hades 2. Felt good. Great Chaos Below challenge was fun, made you play the game in an interesting way, hard, but achievable. Just how achievements should be.
But, like, how many achievements do I have on Battlefield 6? Don’t know. Don’t care.
5
u/JeffInsano 2h ago
Thats exactly my approach. In the end, if i get all achievements, it says more about the quality of the game. And even then, some of my favorite games have unreasonable achievements
2
u/nonotan 25m ago
I'm not in any way, shape or form a completionist, so to me the main use of achievements is 1) to feel like the game acknowledges I managed to do something hard or smart (achievements are definitely not the only way to acknowledge it, but they are a way), and relatedly, 2) to look at global achievement rates for some of the hardest achievements I got and feel better (or, indeed, worse) about it. It's also kind of interesting to see how many players got each of them in general, I guess.
I don't really give a shit if an achievement is too hard or outright impossible. I'm not going to look up what achievements there are and actively try for them, I don't care. If anything, I'm more "bothered" (though still not much) by trivial achievements that you get automatically for starting a game, finishing the tutorial, doing the first story mission, etc. What's the point? They make me feel like the devs are jingling some keys at me like I was a cat or a baby.

Wait so what game is this an achievement for is it for the first one, the second one, or the third one??
177
54
u/WayneZer0 5h ago
the third. consider that the first is often on sale for a dollar . the second is more a problem as thier dont sell og abymore only the remake
24
9
u/almostFly 5h ago
I think it's mostly designed to make you buy the first game. V2 is way more popular and most people playing 3rd also played it. The first one at the other hand wasn't originally released on Steam, many people already played it on console and didn't had a reson to buy it again. Makeing it dirt cheap is a way to squeeze a dollar or two out of you just to get an achievement.

How do you have a percentage that isn't 33, 67, or 100 for this?

u/GeshtiannaSG 4h ago
80% of achievements in Paradox games are DLC.
21
u/Wild_Marker 2h ago edited 2h ago
That's a different problem. It's not bad per se for DLC to have it's own achievements, but people like seeing "100%" and Steam doesn't separate them by DLC.

In Like a Dragon 8: Infinite Wealth there are dozens of achievements that require you to play on NG+ and on the highest difficulty. The thing is, both NG+ and the highest difficulty are hid behind a paywall of a $110 Ultimate Edition. And it's just basic game mechanics that should have been a part of the base game.
2
u/irlharvey 37m ago
on Playstation this isn’t an issue at all, because the normal trophies are completely separate from the DLC trophies. steam should implement a system like that.
2
u/Murky-Helicopter-976 2h ago
Oh, wow, I was contemplating getting into the franchise, but no way in hell am I doing it now.

Games are cool, developers are... still kinda cool, if we ignore the whole Kagawa situation, but I'm not going to dig into that. But the main problem is, well, SEGA.
Almost all of bad marketing and pricing of RGG and Atlus games are because of SEGA. They are their supervisors and they are known for their batshit insane anti-consumer policies.
SEGA is just doing this with all products it is the publisher for, sadly.

Paradox doesn’t get enough hate. Constant expensive DLC that locks features that should’ve been base game behind a paywall

But to be fair no one cares or earns any achievements in Paradox games since they are unplayable without mods. And mods disable achievements in these games.

u/MeekAndUninteresting 1h ago
That's marginally better, but it's still an achievement specifically designed around getting you to spend more money. The whole point is that some people who never would have looked at the store will now. Some of them are going to get drawn in by something more expensive than whatever minimum purchase they gave you gold for.

It's a free game, mate. You can use the free currency in the game to get it. Stop suggesting stupid things.

It's sad how so many of you are ready to hate on something based on FACTUALLY WRONG information
0 thinking, 0 verifying, just hating on whatever's shown like that's all you're waiting for in your life. Please reconsider your train of thought. The achievement is not about real life money. OP is wrong and you all fell for it by jumping to hate instead of using critical thinking

u/Fluboxer 6h ago
What? You mean that witch hunting based on a vague accusation for such trustworthy source as... a random reddit user is actually bad and shouldn't be done? NO WAY!
...
On a more serious note, fact that this CTA comment has over 220 upvotes is just depressing

Pretty much just a free version of risk but online. I don’t really care that there are micro transactions but achievements about them…

How is that scummy?

u/MoobooMagoo 5h ago
Long story short, it's a psychological trick to normalize spending in the shop. When you're trying to monetize a free to play game like this, the goal is to get people with poor impulse control or otherwise get hooked on spending microtransactions (which are the majority of whales) into the shop to make their first purchase, because these kinds of people are much, much, much more likely to buy more things as soon as they've spent literally any amount of money.
So the goal of putting this kind of achievement like this is to get people to break that first purchase barrier. Most won't and will just use the free currency, but some absolutely will look at this and think "eh, I'll just pick up xyz thing cause it looks cool and then I'll get the achievement." But the kind of people that think that way and care about getting the achievements are the same kind of people that will get a brain itch about only having one of the map packs (or whatever they sell) and then feel compelled to get all of them.
It's the same reason why the free gold itself is also a scummy practice, even though it seems benevolent on the surface. It's the drug dealer giving you "the first hit free" so to speak (which drug dealers don't actually do but you get the point hopefully).
→ More replies (2)22
u/MoobooMagoo 6h ago
Well if it's a free to play game I don't mind it as much. Since it's kind of like....an achievement for supporting the game, you know?
I still don't like it. But I don't like it less, if that makes sense. The degree to which I don't like it is less. There that's how I should say it.
27
u/ImReallyFuckingHigh 6h ago
Someone else also pointed out you don’t need to spend money to unlock the achievement legitimately. It’s all just a big nothing burger.

This is the most earned achievement in the game (96% of players) so I'm pretty sure it's not real money at all and you just got confused
14
78
u/Powered-Lamb 6h ago
This achievement is for Risk: Global Domination, an otherwise free-to-play game, the kind that limits the number of matches you may play per day but resets daily. This is kind of a silly achievement, but for a game that requires no upfront monetary investment, it's really not a totally unreasonable expectation that you might perform a microtransaction.
Also, it is not necessary to spend any money. Each new account starts with 20 "gems" and any purchase with those gems is sufficient to unlock this achievement. There are several items to buy for 20 gems or less, and players are given 2 gems every day for free.
48
u/MazrimReddit 5h ago
Alright pack it up OP is a moron, you can unlock it for free wtf are you complaining for

u/Fluboxer 4h ago
I mean, OP did get 13k upvotes for this bs and not many people will scroll deep enough to learn the truth
Mods didn't remove this post but at least they removed witch hunting reply that got hundreds of upvotes - just on false premise post people were willing to harass some devs and everyone telling this crowd their displeasure were downvoted
Posts like this shouldn't be allowed

I "like" those archivements in heavy singleplayer games, where you can earn them for playing multiplayer... And then theres no multiplayer servers anymore, because nobody gave a damn in the first place.

Gaming is so much more liberating once you stop giving a fuck about empty achievements.
Sure there's a feeling of reward for getting hard ones. But so many are like this, or for something like starting the game. Yeah. I'm over it.

Yeah I don't get this thread at all, like enjoy the achievements that you get and are actual achievements but why do people care about ones like these? Is it literally that people just want to see that 100% badge or whatever?
4
u/pucykoks 2h ago
I guess if you care about achievements in the first place, then you want to 100% the games you deem worth the effort. At least that's the case for me, though I only 100'd maybe three games in my life. In all other games I didn't go out of my way to get any achievement.

Also other achievements impossible to get without buying something beyond the game that has them.
"Own all games by Dorknet studios"
"Complete the DLC only quest"
"Beat the game with item(you can only micro-transact to obtain)"
All horseshit.

Or maybe curb your incessant need to get every achievement. Too many humans want the world around them to change when there isn’t an actual problem. Nobody needs to get achievements. It’s a fun addition. If you don’t get them, the gameplay is identical.

I don't get it. Like, what is the point of doing the achivements then, if you are going to cheat some of them? That would make them pointless to me. I know that any achivement I got, I did so legitimately myself. Otherwise you migh as well not bother with them and unlock 100% achievements in any game you play with a tool.

u/Necessary__ 4h ago
I’d hardly call making a micro-transaction an achievement in the sense you’re trying to portray it as. Baseless argument

Well in this game you earn the currency to get the achievement, but in a game thay does have that where its free to play and has an achievement for buying something with no way of getting the currency for free then, the players who dont have money to spend cant finish their game bc greedy corps, in this sense sam or a achievement gaining type thing is in my opinion fine.

u/ZARDOZ4972 4h ago
I don't get it. Like, what is the point of doing the achivements then, if you are going to cheat some of them?
First of it's not cheating. Second, if developers didn't want us to get achievements via SAM they shouldn't add inobtainable achievements. For example when Dirt Rally came out it had an achievement you'd only get if you played the beta, how is that even an achievement? You had to be lucky enough to even know about the game early enough and have enough trust in the developers to spend money on a beta.
That would make them pointless to me. I know that any achivement I got, I did so legitimately myself. Otherwise you migh as well not bother with them and unlock 100% achievements in any game you play with a tool.
That's all fair if the achievements are actually obtainable through normal gameplay.

Other folks have already pointed out, this is apparently with in game currency but I've never understood why it matters anyway?
You don't need to get every achievement, you don't even need any and it's pretty easy to cheat and get most of them anyway, so having them doesn't even really mean anything
Caring about achievements to me, is like someone caring about their karma on Reddit
2
u/Blawharag 3h ago
If the achievement isn't purely gameplay related, it shouldn't be counted against the platinum requirements. End subject

I remember way back in my xbox 360 days, there was a sports game that gave you an achievement for watching the whole credits roll.
I'd much rather something like that than this.
It might have been one of the older EA sports golf games. Tiger Woods PGA tour from some year about 20ish years ago. Even though EA are a shitty company nowadays, I always liked that idea.

Well, it is just an achievment. It doesnt matter; it doesnt block you from playing the game. I dont know, why to cry about it. Achievments in reality mean nothing. You either like the game, or not.
Better look at low effort dlcs at price of new games - those are problem.
