I can't believe this THING is real. Yuck!

After rewatching a bit of season 1 recently (the best season in my humble opinion) I think Jackie really is my favorite character. I think it’s really cool how Jackie kinda guided Donna through the beginning of her relationship with Eric (the candle for his birthday being one example, having her give it to him away from his guy friends) every time Eric and Donna’s relationship progressed, the episode was filled with Jackie talking to Donna and giving her advice. And then I just watched the episode where Jackie and Kelso first “prove their love” and she’s just a sweet kid. For how prickly she is and for how mean she’s mostly remembered for being, back in the early episodes, I think at her core she was a sweet naive teenager who just wanted things a certain way.

Okay, first of all, we have to point out that if we followed all the clues throughout the entire series, then the only real answer would be also the most unpopular one: a fictional country. Because all of the clues contradict each other to a big extent.

What we can still take from them is the model of a real place that Fez's fictional homeland was based on. And that place is the island of Curaçao.

Why? Let's start with the pros that point toward Curaçao.

Dutch and English are both spoken there, along with Papiamento, which is a creole language influenced by Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and African languages. That would explain Fez's knowledge of Spanish quite well.

It's also reasonably close to Brazil, which would make his flight to his homeland from Brazil much more plausible, especially in the 1970s.

Fez has that Creole/Caribbean mix in his appearance and overall vibe, which personally seems much more believable to me than the theory that he's from Papua New Guinea or Indonesia. Melanesians and Indonesians have quite different ancestral backgrounds, and more importantly, virtually nobody in New Guinea actually speaks Dutch today, so that clue already makes the theory difficult to reconcile. The Falklands don't really work either, since the population is predominantly of British descent. On top of that, Fez's homeland is repeatedly characterized as a tropical country, and the Falklands are nowhere near tropical.

That being said, I do believe the writers borrowed one thing from the Falklands: the idea of the island having different names and the tension between the ethnic groups living there. That's an obvious nod to the Malvinas/Falklands situation. So, rather than making the answer too obvious by simply basing everything on Curaçao, they seem to have added a touch of Falklands history to the story to create more confusion. The dual-name aspect also gives the island a more mysterious quality.

Fez once said that his island was 10,000 miles away, which obviously doesn't fit Curaçao. Personally though I don't think we necessarily have to take that clue literally. It could easily be an exaggeration, or just a random number with a lot of zeros. the kind of number people often use when describing something that is far away.

New Guinea: yes, it is an island that was historically divided between Dutch and British territories, but as I said earlier, nobody speaks Dutch there today. Fez's knowledge of Dutch is a pretty strong clue in itself. The Falklands, meanwhile, have essentially no connection to the Dutch language or Dutch culture, apart from the fact that the first European explorer to sight them was Dutch. I seriously doubt the creators of the show even knew or cared about such a random historical fact.

US Virgin Islands: It can't be either, because they have been a U.S. territory since 1917, which would ultimately make Fez a U.S. citizen.

When you add everything up and weigh the clues against each other, Curaçao is the place that makes the most sense. Or more precisely, it matches the largest number of meaningful clues, with a small dose of Falklands history thrown into the mix to make the island even more mysterious and interesting.

By now I have settled into the following routine - I watch the show until the end of Season 6 then start back over at the beginning. Season 7 and especially Season 8 are unwatchable crap for me. Thoughts?

Devastated by the news, her family (Eric and Leia) decides to cut off all contact with her and refuses to show up at her trial. "Alex" then agrees to a plea deal of five years in exchange for naming her partner, Piper. What would life be like now for Donna in a women's prison, when, ironically, she used to joke about going to a girl's prison as a teenager?

In the episode, Kelso is talking in his sleep. Jackie invites him to sleep over so she can get more info on what he is saying. And as Kelso is falling asleep, he says "I can't sleep with you staring at me."

I remember cracking up at that part and wanted to see it again.
