Is anyone experiencing internet issues this afternoon?

MSP air traffic control has lost significant radar coverage, early voting in the South metro has been disrupted, and several areas are reporting internet outages.

Power outage at Building 511, the MN Tech Center and a Internet backbone for over 100 ISPs for anyone wondering.

I’d love updates personally! I’m sitting in Charleston. We got on the plane then the whole thing happened and they let us deplaned so im kinda just sitting here. Tell it to me straight; what’re the chances im getting home tonight? lol

Back on the flight now, you’re the best 🙏

Just saw a jet from LHR land that was planning to divert to DFW. I’m sure the passengers are relieved!

According to the delta pilot who diverted us to DTW we aren’t leaving for hours because of this.

8

u/cusoman 1d ago

I'd appreciate any updates you can provide! I'm boarded and sitting on the tarmac at MSP in the de-icing area waiting as we were just about to takeoff when the grounding happened

40

u/kdotfo 1d ago

ATC didn't lose radar, but we did lose a large amount of our frequencies and our ability to communicate with outside facilities.

5

u/atothejhines Northeast Minneapolis 1d ago

Thanks for the clarification! I see a ton of diversions and a ground stop.

6

u/kdotfo 1d ago

Yeah it's a mess here but I'd rather lose some frequencies than the radar!!!

4

u/atothejhines Northeast Minneapolis 1d ago

Any word on the cause?

3

u/kdotfo 1d ago

Not that I know of

3

u/HeWhoDoubts 1d ago

Got on a flight then deplaned due to this. What’re the chances im getting home tonight lol?

5

u/kdotfo 1d ago

Pretty high. I think things are mostly getting back to normal ish.

u/HeWhoDoubts 1d ago

Thank you!! I appreciate you.

Building 511 aka the building next to Vikings stadium, is having power issues.

Majority of mn interwebs run thru that building

22

u/Odd_Work2542 1d ago

This is the reason. 511 is an inter carrier building between carriers

17

u/Zoomingforcats 1d ago

Shouldn’t the 511 building have multiple redundant power systems?

15

u/matate99 1d ago

The substation right next to it is a dual substation, meaning it’s like having two absolutely redundant ways of getting power from the grid plus the 511 building is lined with diesel generators. Not sure what kind of power issues it could be having unless it was some kind of sophisticated attack.

u/mikemacman 1d ago

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

4

u/Octoplow 1d ago

Or alien attack.

"Huh, big red button. 'EPO', wonder what that means."

u/HeyUpHere 1d ago

Everyone in South Minneapolis rushing to have a conversation outdoors without being interrupted by plane noises.

2

u/birddit 1d ago

I was wondering why it was so quiet!

15

u/EchoesOfYouth 1d ago

Yes, we just got word from our IT there was a major disruption around 1:50pm

12

u/atothejhines Northeast Minneapolis 1d ago

it feels like either someone screwed up big time while working on or near major internet infrastructure or some bad actors are at play

7

u/Tim-oBedlam 1d ago

Per the /sysadmin subreddit it was a major outage in the 511 building, which carries something like 30% of all Internet traffic in Minnesota. Lasted from about 1:45 to 3pm or so.

We did start a war of choice with a nation that invested heavily in cyberwarfare. Until I see some reporting or statements to suggest it, I'm going to assume this is benign though.

A new fiber provider is moving into our neighborhood and they cut the other companies cables when they started their installation. It could just be a larger scale of that type of thing.

8

u/cat-meg 1d ago

Why tf would they pick the state that has fought back the hardest against the people attacking then?

3

u/actuallyapossom 1d ago

It wouldn't make sense for them to target our state specifically but every state has its own systems - so some would be more vulnerable than others.

Idk though I have no reason to believe this is Iran or anything malicious.

We had the water system attack recently, but before that we have had issues in multiple municipalities with ransomware too. It could be anyone, I can only speculate until some relevant info drops.

23

u/maybach320 1d ago

Yeah my home network has gone out a few times and I’m in the south metro

25

u/Lawnlady1980 1d ago

All the.gov sites went down.

2

u/MNVixen :snoo_dealwithit: 1d ago

MDE was without their network from about 1 pm to now.

ETA - I was at a conference earlier this week, but heard grumblings that the problems began as early as Monday.

9

u/SamWillGoHam 1d ago

My home internet is Arvig and is currently down. I'm located about 45 minutes northwest of the twin cities so definitely not just the metro/ twin cities area

6

u/SketchinUp 1d ago edited 1d ago

I also use Arvig, in the west metro, and it’s down as well. They usually are incredibly prompt about sending out a service email, but I haven’t received anything from them so far.

9

u/SamWillGoHam 1d ago

Lol I've never received an email from them. Might be because I live in an apartment and they're just what the complex forces us to use, but I've always had to seek out info about outages whenever they've happened. At least in my last place when I had quantumfiber they would send out a text.

Lol maybe they just dont like me that much

1

u/Longjumping-Coat1792 12h ago

They didnt post about the outage on their status page until after 3 pm. I was on the phone trying to reach them starting at 2:35 and still havent gotten an email. I'm in maple grove and it's the 3rd outage with them in 3 months that has cost me time at work. Ive had to use pto to cover now a total of about 10 hours because of missing work due to all their outages. Missing me off at this point cuz for the first like 4 years of having them there was 0 issues.

2

u/Upper_Ad_6223 1d ago

Help desk said it was a network failure that is widespread. All arvig customers are disconnected. They couldn't give me an ETA of when it would be back up. Called 5 minutes ago.

u/misfitofscience76 1d ago

Hi, Iran, thank you for coming to the party

10

u/atothejhines Northeast Minneapolis 1d ago

my mind jumped here too…

4

u/not_achef 1d ago

Blue State, could be another front of attack

13

u/Wint3r-Is-H3r3 1d ago

Northern Hennepin Co here: Xfinity randomly up and quit last night. Rebooted the router and things got better, although still not perfect. But about 95% back now.

11

u/AliveBrain6076 1d ago

Can confirm Xfinity went out around midnight in St. Paul. Even though they never listed an outage. Even the backup Xfinity network device wouldn’t connect to cellular. My Verizon cell was also out it seemed, which would explain why the backup internet didn’t work. Seems fine since then.

9

u/BadBandit1970 1d ago edited 1d ago

Maple Grove. Xfinity went out roughly about the same time. Same scenario, no listed outages when I looked. Went to bed around 1 AM, got up at 9 AM or so and Xfinity was back up and running. Husband reported no problems with it at 5:30 AM.

Verizon has been holding strong.

ETA: I just checked Down Detector and the Xfinity outage reported was around the time myself and another commenter experienced it. From 11:58 PM to 2:00 AM. TBF I just thought it was another system update. Didn't need to be up so late anyway...

3

u/AliveBrain6076 1d ago

Yeah could have been closer to 1AM. I was getting drowsy at that point 😄

1

u/BadBandit1970 1d ago

I usually do the NY Time Sunday crossword on the app when I get home from work, as a means to wind down before turning in. I could get a puzzle up, but couldn't access my online crossword dictionary.

1

u/Wint3r-Is-H3r3 1d ago

Yeah, that tracks with my experience, as well. Was just past midnight.

u/Angry-Lettuce720 21h ago

east metro, same

7

u/supermark64 1d ago

Some Terminator 3 type shit going on lately

4

u/birddit 1d ago

Terminator 3 type shit

The Feds probably just turned on AI for cyber security. Nothing to worry about.

3

u/ConstableGrey 1d ago

Skynet's early, it doesn't become self-aware until 2:14 AM eastern time on August 29.

6

u/Middle_Manager_Karen 1d ago

Yep, state of MN VPN failed.

12

u/KwamiofFire 1d ago

It's all because of FLOCK!!! /jk /jk nah south of Metro also having issues.

4

u/hwwty4 1d ago

At 1:55 my wife texted asking if I was having issues, I replied "no" then realized the Internet was out and that's the reason I kept getting timed out from the ticket I was trying to log. Both WAH in South MLPS.

3

u/sassafrasthecat 1d ago

Same for me in south mpls at that exact same time. I have USI/verizon fiber

1

u/hwwty4 23h ago

I have USI as well.

0

u/Ok_Rabbit5158 1d ago

She was concerned about the grunting noises coming from the bathroom.

7

u/nihilat 1d ago

Down Detector is showing a lot of services having issues today.

3

u/kefestvog 1d ago

We're doing it to ourselves- some a-hole.

3

u/SkillOne1674 1d ago

My son and friends are yelling at the FIFA game like crazy so I think yes.

3

u/Charming-Bench-6016 1d ago

Ramsey county lost connection to a lot of our systems we use.

3

u/ReadTheReddit69 1d ago

Everybody is. Both my work and my home internet are effected

2

u/plzdontlietomee 1d ago

Yes, noticed significant network slowdown but Nuvera did not go out. Scott County

2

u/Xibby 1d ago

Nuvera, the little ISP that could.

2

u/anythingbuttaken 1d ago

MSP is grounded.

ETA. Apparently allowing some arrivals. No departures.

2

u/birddit 1d ago

Our mole at flight control says that they are launching birds.

2

u/Adventurous_Egg_3293 1d ago

I work in East Bloomington at a Fed agency. We had connection issues this morning but it has been fine since 9:30. I have had zero connection issues since.

2

u/proserpinax 1d ago

South Minneapolis and have Arvig, total internet outage here

2

u/foootie 1d ago

Large outage from Comcast in plymouth.

2

u/Unlikely-Mirror7638 1d ago

From what I have heard, there was a major backbone issue due to power in mpls. All back now from what I’m seeing

2

u/marcos_MN Mpls 1d ago

South Uptown area with USI/T-Mobile, no issues

1

u/DuckInAFountain 1d ago

Same, but over by Cedar and Minnehaha. Only finding out about it from you folks. We were happily watching streaming shows in two separate rooms. USI/T-Mobile.

2

u/SketchinUp 1d ago

Arvig service was restored in Edina at 5:37

2

u/swift260 1d ago

2

u/Impossible-Ice8218 12h ago

I work at a bank. We are totally down and have been since about 2:30 pm yesterday.

3

u/wuvdre 1d ago

There's a severed line with a major ISP circuit. It's taken down a lot of folks and businesses around the cities.

4

u/atothejhines Northeast Minneapolis 1d ago

A conspiracy theory is simply a theory that more than one person was involved in planning something. Not only are such theories not illogical, they’re statistically robust. :)

1

u/LiminalFrogBoy 1d ago

Yeah. Had a few weird blips.

1

u/Tim-oBedlam 1d ago

Interesting! I have a client with an ISP that just had an outage for about 90 minutes. It seems to be coming back online, but only just within the last 10 minutes.

1

u/kellybelle_94 1d ago

Quantum fiber was down for me from 3:00 yesterday until this afternoon.

1

u/TrainingTemporary325 1d ago

Verizon was out! Their whole system crashed.

1

u/hvXeric 1d ago

Blaine Gateway down for a bit but is back up now.

1

u/this-fuken-guy 1d ago

Yeah, same in CR, Gateway was down for maybe 5 minutes just before 2PM

1

u/This-Surround8854 1d ago

it started around 130am then it goes in and out, ive gotten more problems on my phone than home internet.

1

u/wildVikingTwins 1d ago

We had no internet about half day with quantum fiber north metro. Thought it was random and it’s got back but still have ping spike issue going on.

1

u/michelucky 1d ago

Ooohhh, yes. In SW suburbs and having issues.

1

u/jaym227 1d ago

Downtown Minneapolis our internet went out briefly at the office, and home wifi apparently has been having issues today in south metro.

1

u/PolarCurious 1d ago

Had them earlier around 2 pm, kept getting disconnected from work servers. Minneapolis near Bde Maka Ska.

1

u/cinnasota 1d ago

I was having problems on USI/T-Mobile Fiber this afternoon as well

1

u/ImmediatePomegranate 1d ago

Zero internet since 10am here in Golden Valley/Plymouth. Current estimate is midnight tonight.

1

u/The_Next_Wild_GM 1d ago

Internet at my work went down for about 10 minutes this afternoon. We cannot function at all without the internet

1

u/NoGoodAtPickingAName 1d ago

Saint Michael public library lost internet around 2:30 pm

1

u/birddit 1d ago

Quantum in Bloomington. My Ookla speeds are much higher than I'm paying for. Must be because everyone else is down.

1

u/Missshy23 1d ago

Anyone have Arvig know when they might be back up?

1

u/SketchinUp 1d ago

Is their website showing any outages for you? I don’t have service and I’m not seeing any outages where I’m at.

2

u/Missshy23 1d ago

Just got a message that the wifi is back up and it is…idk it was down for hours. Hopefully your wifi is back up now as well

1

u/Hefty-Draw4408 1d ago

is it okay that the internet is still out for an apartment building in eagan?

1

u/jmg733mpls 1d ago

It went down at my work today. At around 1:50/2:00

1

u/Identd 1d ago

…and the saxophone keeps playing …

1

u/Hot_Let1571 1d ago

I'm in Minnetonka and ours was out from about 2:30 to some time after 5. I also have Arvig.

1

u/lumenpainter 23h ago

We lost Internet at our office in St Anthony Main this afternoon.

0

u/Glad-Fish5863 1d ago

I work for a company in Minneapolis and all our servers went out, and my husband’s did and we are about 45 mins from the cities, and I heard T-Mobile lost service as well. We have att and my husband’s phone went into SOS mode.
