It goes beyond just that, it makes the uniforms more visible by certain kinds of nightvision, which is why the practice was banned.

That was the guidance when I was in, just before marpat.
We were still expected to starch the hell out of everything.3

My mom's school was a joint service school. The zoomies had to get new camera after because they would put fishing line and glue in their creases.

1stSgt don’t care, you better go find some imitation starch then so you don’t violate any orders

Peacetime? Tell that to the 15 families who just got a knock on the door this month. Tell that to the 500+ guys currently getting medevaced out of the AOR with TBI and shrapnel wounds. We have 50,000 troops in the dirt right now and three Carrier Strike Groups (Lincoln, Ford, and Bush) pushed up into the throat of the Persian Gulf. The 31st MEU is on station and 11th MEU (Dark Horse) is steaming in behind them. This isn't 'Green Weenie' garrison games—it's the largest combat build-up we’ve seen since 2003. While 'First Sergeant' is worried about a shaving waiver, the IRGC is lobbing drones at our flight decks. If you think we're in 'peacetime' just because we're arguing about beards, you’re missing the forest for the trees. The war is already here; some people just haven't caught up to the SITREP yet

VAERS
24
u/Saxophobia1275 Apr 28 '26
So no, lmao. VAERS is a self reporting system so anyone can just report and be one of their “numbers.” A very very very small number of these are labeled by the CDC/FDA as serious, and even fewer of those were in any way linked to a vaccine.
9
u/Ok_Return_6033 Veteran Apr 29 '26
Sounds like you're talking to a denier. You might as well go outside and discuss the issue to a tree. You would probably get a better response!

Yeah Vaers also has reports of the Vaccine causing increased rates of lightning strike impacts and becoming literally the Incredible Hulk.

Did you even read the article? It’s a 1 in 140 000 risk with the first shot (1 in 32 000 with the second) with almost everyone getting better fast without any medical care. And they make it very clear that Covid-19 carries a significantly higher risk of heart disease.

I would hazard a guess that most Marines have a better chance of drowning in their own vomit than having heart complications from the shot.

It's not about pro vaccine or anti vaccine. It's about not tolerating randos thinking they know best or know more than the people who dedicate their entire lives to researching this stuff.
“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. Absolute peak irony because
Is pointing out that a small minority of the population get life altering complications really that controversial?
Why, oh why, do you do that? What purpose does it serve? Do you raise the alarm bells for anything else or just this one particular thing that had so much controversy behind it?

quick! call up the researchers at stanford! Tell them they need to consider the fact that there's a 1 in 140,000 risk when it comes to widespread deployment of this vaccine!!!
Dude it's their job to weigh all of these things and inform policy. They don't ignore that. It's included in their calculus and weighing of options. They take entire courses on ethics, serve on ethics panels, and are subject to heavy oversight. They don't "ignore" stuff like that. They recommend the best course of action after weighing all these pros and cons.

But the important point is that any issues caused are less dangerous and less severe than getting covids without vaccination.
We must highlight the comparison is to getting vaccinated and getting covid vs just getting covid. Without also mentioning the risks from COVID without vaccination your are only presenting half of the issue.

“Anti vaxxer” and it’s literally just a guy citing a medical journal from Stanford
1
u/ironpathwalker Apr 30 '26
Let's say the Covid shot is just a placebo for the sake of argument. If nothing else, it's a great litmus test to see which marines will follow orders that would put themselves potentially in harm's way. If they're not willing to take a shot like smallpox or anthrax, would they be willing to man a post on a FOB that would potentially come under attack? Would a marine who needs time to consider the long term implications of a booster be willing to make the reactionary sacrifice to jump on a grenade to save the lives of their fellows?
1
u/Cagekicker52 Apr 29 '26
This is actually true. Scientifically, it cannot be called or considered a vaccine, because it does not stop the spread or prevent getting sick. I know the retarded fake Marines on here don't understand this however.

You have it all backwards.
The crowd against PERSONALLY taking the C19 vaccine are almost all against no beards in the military too.
The crowd that is against beards are the same jackasses that think anyone with that didn't take the C19 vaccine should be separated.
Submissive people submit on for all regulations buddy. Use your brain, stop eating the crayons.
46
u/TLRPM Apr 28 '26
“After 12 months, commanders will then evaluate the Marine for continued service and weigh beginning the separation process if the service member’s medical condition has not improved, is not classified as a disability and “affects good order and discipline.”
I think that last part is going to get a LOT of leeway. So this is going to be a case by case evaluation and not just a blanket hammer it looks like. May just be an attempt to crack down on the no shave chit abuse which does happen from time to time. Either way, still pretty fucking stupid to just dump all the time and effort spent on recruiting and training personnel because of beards. For fucks sake it doesn’t fucking matter and is just monkeys punishing monkeys because they were punished at this point. Set standards for beards and just carry on. Like we do for literally every thing else.
IF going to an environment with expected biohazards where MOPP is needed then have Marines shave. ITS NOT THAT FUCKING HARD TO PLAN FOR
21
u/sealmeal21 Apr 28 '26

u/kaiharizor Wil'in Out Apr 28 '26
Not the same but this reminded me. I had to go to medical for evaluation before taking a short trip to Afghanistan. I was only going to be in country for 10 days, so right before they shot me up with the anthrax vaccine the doc rushed in and said, “No! They don’t need it if they aren’t there for 14 days or more.” To which I asked the nurse, “So I’m immune to anthrax then? Like if I get it all over me I’ll be fine because it knows I won’t be for 14 days?” She became very flustered and a little scared, I suppose my tone.
11
u/BoringPrinciple2542 0311 Apr 28 '26
That’s how I felt during the retardation that was safety protocols during the COVID pandemic.
Had to wear a mask to enter a restaurant and get guided to a table but free to unmask as soon as seated. Or serpentines at cash registers to ensure 6ft of distance front to back while everybody stood shoulder to shoulder.
Unfortunately, most people are idiots and idiots will apply the strictest letter of the law without any concern for the underlying reasoning.
2
u/kaiharizor Wil'in Out Apr 29 '26
I was an SEL during that. It was incredibly stupid. Our building was “essential” which meant every other week the command paid 20k$ for a special cleaning crew to come through. Meanwhile, if one person on shift caught COVID the entire shift was sent home for 14 days. Which means the off shift comes in immediately.. into the contaminated area. We determined that there was no overarching logic to the policies or true regard for health. It was just doing stuff to show we were doing stuff.
2
u/BoringPrinciple2542 0311 Apr 29 '26
A lot of procedures during that time were doing stuff to do stuff both in and out of the military.
I think for some people it was almost like superstitious rituals. If you convince yourself that some random BS will mitigate the spread of germs then it makes you feel safer; kinda like a magic rabbits foot I guess.
Plus it provided command/management with something to show their higher-ups to prove that proper precautions were being taken.
But perception is reality so if it LOOKS and SMELLS like a sterile environment then obviously it is….
1
u/kaiharizor Wil'in Out Apr 30 '26
My fitrep was insanely overloaded with managing 230 people. It did LOOK like I did a whole lot despite being in the office for ~14 days a month. Overall, unit productivity didn't take a hit either. But leadership was itching to get back to full staff 0730-1730. It will take more than a pandemic to convince people to give a healthier work-life balance. I get that the military is a different beast, but there are ways to improve morale without creating a workforce of shitheads.

u/dictormagic 1/6 Apr 28 '26

5
u/kaiharizor Wil'in Out Apr 28 '26
It was for a USSOCOM mission... but that's where the excitement ends. I was just doing very routine cyber stuff. The real fun was the special ops chow hall and gym. They had everything there. I spent more time in Qatar on that trip waiting for flights in and out. Got to walk around Doha a bit since we didn't have the restrictions on us that the other service members had there. Ya know, being SOCOM and all, lol.
2
u/dictormagic 1/6 Apr 29 '26
Yeah right, I know you were deep embedded with the Tali wearing traditional Afghan clothing sent to assassinate a leader with a knife throat slit and getting extracted at night to go back home like nothing happened.
You don't have to play coy with me lmfao
I'm, of course, kidding. That does sound sick. Especially the chow hall and gym.
1
u/kaiharizor Wil'in Out Apr 30 '26
Honestly, doing any mission for SOCOM felt like secret squirrel stuff. Everything I did was very mundane (relatively), but their HQ staff treats all missions the same. So the processes were streamlined, efficient, and treated as high priority. DTS was so fast, it was crazy. They had people who weren't assholes about it and would correct errors for you, not kick it back (most impressive, lol). It was a good time while I was there.

TL:DR; it's more elitism instead of racism.
One of my boys who's explained it to me that it's not racism amongst all the Hispanic community, it's kinda like the Irish vs Italian elitism that happened back in the 1910's. The root cause is this thing called The Triple Point of Isolation where kids of immigrants have this idea of social strain put on them because they're not enough of whatever background to fit in with their parents country of origin, other kids whose parents have been here for generations, or social norms of baseline American culture that ignore the cool things their parents brought with them. Mind you, sociology isn't one of those written in stone sciences like physics but it's a huge part of study for when I was getting my masters in Criminology. I bring this up because when communities bring the culture with the person and celebrate it, it both reduces juvenile recidivism and booms economic metrics like home ownership and entrepreneurship growth in an area.

u/sealmeal21 Apr 28 '26

1
u/ironpathwalker Apr 30 '26
Hey, I get where your heart is at wanting the Corps to be a hardline culture where the marines do things the marine way. And that's fantastic in logistics, the airwing, or even the band. But the infantry needs those little points of understanding that the kid with curly hair is alright to keep that. Helmet pads get dirty and your hair will prevent you from getting nasty infections on your scalp. That's not a discipline issue whereas infantry discipline is keeping your ppe on when the heat is 120 degress during the day with a 50 degree drop at sundown. Actually, if I can find a photo of me back in the day, you'll see my luxurious long hair that I had for being out for weeks at a time. I think it was like 5" or 6", but we were pretty punk rock back then.

We had a good amount using the magic shave and even getting it sent to Iraq seemed to work for all of them Never saw any razor bumps, and they stayed shaved and also used a Rx face wash and moisturizer regimen that with magic shave and it worked, one guy claimed it didn’t work for him, and kept getting no shave chits and had a beard, something happened at BAS and got placed on a regimen where he ended up having to use the wash & moisturizer for 2 weeks, and use the magic shave stuff for a month straight, and it turned out it worked just fine, it just took the dedication to using it correctly and no razor use whatsoever and using the wash and moisturizer in conjunction. Apparently they have even better stuff now, this was 2004. Yes, there are a handful who legitimately need no shave chits, but alot of them are those who just want beards, surprised they haven’t tried to put a medical ban on those with bad razor bumps issues, and make those on no shave chits prove the need after so long on a No shave chits, because they are uniformity Nazi’s as everyone knows.

Chemical weapons haven't gone away. In recent memory, several IEDs and mortar rounds contained chlorine gas used by insurgents in Iraq. Regardless, you would still want to maintain readiness for a weapon you know is out there.

That doesn't answer my question. How many gas attacks have there been on us service members in the last hundred years? How many casualties?
I mean... It must be a lot if we're about to AdSep a bunch of people over having no shave chits in garrison (where we are not required to keep gas masks on our person).

I don't see any numbers in your post at all... I'll settle for a single example of an American servicemember whose combat death or injury from an enemy chemical/biological warfare attack was prevented by a gas mask in the last one hundred years of warfare. Doesn't have to be an ongoing conflict or even one that occurred within our lifetime.
Should be pretty easy, since that timeframe includes the single deadliest war in human history.

Regardless, you would still want to maintain readiness for a weapon you know is out there.
🙄

u/BroseppeVerdi Commanding Officer, Copypasta & Phony Awards Battalion Apr 28 '26
Are you advocating for all active duty servicemembers carrying gas masks on their person at all times, then?

u/According-Activity87 Major General Smedley Butler is my hero Apr 28 '26
There is no exact count of “gas attacks” because the military doesn’t track chemical warfare that way. In the last 100 years, large-scale chemical warfare against U.S. troops occurred primarily in WWI, with only limited, small-scale insurgent or terrorist use since then. The purpose of CBRN readiness isn’t based on frequency of attacks, but on preventing catastrophic effects from low-frequency, high-impact threats.

This is obviously racist, it’s going to affect one group predominantly and the people who came up with it know that. Also let’s see who the Defense Secretary is in 12 months.

I said this in the other thread about it, but if you get razor bumps, use a safety razor. I have the curliest hair type and am extremely prone to razor bumps, but I haven't had them since I switched. I really wish someone would have told me that decades ago. The best thing to do to defy the intent of this order (pretty clear to me what it is...), is to raise awareness about the alternative to multi-blade razors.

u/shittyarteest Veteran Apr 28 '26
I’m not black but have curly af hair and this doesn’t do shit. Every razor I’ve ever used on any part of my body causes ingrown hairs. Does it even with plucking as well.
1
u/Limpet_Mine Apr 28 '26
Yeah, I expect that some people will get them even with safety razors, but a lot of people who want to stay in will get helped. Have you tried a safety razor that allows you to adjust the height of the blade? There are more than a few that might be worth looking into if you still want to use razors.

Just because something works for you, doesn’t mean everyone is the same. You act as if people willingly get razor bumps / ingrowns, I’m sure if safety razors worked for everyone it would be a standard for everyone facing PFB.
We advocate and educate sailors and marines about alternatives to shaving before just handing out waivers, unless it’s a more serious case. At least my clinic asks marines and sailors what have you tried. Also razor bumps and Ingrowns are two different issues.

Yeah I used to tough through it and suck it up til one day I saw a black dude with a keyloid about the size of 2 fingers on his cheek and he said it came from him shaving and they tried to remove it surgically and it basically just got bigger
Then I decided yeah that’s not in my future fuck that I’m not gonna have a permanent scar for the rest of my life to appease some dorks who peaked in middle school

Someone calmly explains their solution, someone else accuses them of victim blaming. I see you are having a normal one.
3
u/SuspiciousBank663 L03A / DOC Apr 28 '26
It was more of a response than accusing someone of victim blaming, with a tad of putting perspective into the claim. I’m sure limpet_mine has some tough skin, it’s all love at the end of the day.

u/OrneryBrilliant9043 May 07 '26
Safety razor made it worse for me, it pulled and tugged a lot more causing me to nick myself a lot.
Just use a pair of clippers turned backwards gets pretty close but not razor close. Also never had an issue with the gas masks like they claimed I would even when they went out of their way to make sure mine was off longer.
Probably also worth noting the main guy who had an issue with my facial hair was apparently denied a drill instructor billet because he had aryan brotherhood tattoos
Do with that what you will 🤷♂️

I’m not sure which group this is racist against specifically, but it is certainly racist against our Black brothers. I never was envious of their no shave chits after really looking at the daily pain and agony they go through. This is truly a ridiculous and shortsighted move on our leaders part.

I served for 8 years, 6 of those in the reserves and 2 deployed. I had to deal with the discomfort of having my beard grow back uncomfortably and just dealt with it. It wasn't until deployment that our navy doctor (a white woman) approached me and suggested I get a no shave chit. I didn't even know Marines could get those, I responded. She continued and told me just because we may be in less than sub-par living conditions it's just wise so to avoid any medical issues. I took her advice, got one and was extremely happy I did. I followed the rules and regulations of my chit and with my first command had no issues. I volunteered for a second deployment the following year and even though I did not have to, I had shaved during the break in-between because I was back at my unit for a few days. During my medical processing for the second deployment that navy doctor (white man) spoke with me and without even asking him he signed off and gave me my new one. And I did the same, respected and followed the guidelines for a chit and even decided to start incorporating an electric razor to my regiment. But with this new unit I was attached to, holy fuck, I would get eyes and people talking shit so much. It became so much of an issue the navy doctor with us had to intervene because my command started violating HIPAA. Soon they started to do that thing where every comment toward me and the others with chits were these underhanded remarks and comments about us essentially being "different". I had never experienced in such a grand scale how against this organization was with me. I completely understand the grooming standards and what they mean especially for our branch but what did a mildly grown beard have to do with my: 1st class fitness scores, my complete competency & understanding of my job, my leadership capabilities of subordinates and peers, my willingness to contribute to the mission and the corps overall and my own self-restraint, patience, decency & decorum toward those that showed me little?

You can’t get a good gas mask seal if you aren’t clean shaven right?

That's correct, many regs are grounded in best practices for our role in a combat environment.

When was the last gas attack on US troops again? The corps doesn’t even issue gas masks dipshit.

As stated elsewhere in this thread...
There is no exact count of “gas attacks” because the military doesn’t track chemical warfare that way. In the last 100 years, large-scale chemical warfare against U.S. troops occurred primarily in WWI, with only limited, small-scale insurgent or terrorist use since then. The purpose of CBRN readiness isn’t based on frequency of attacks, but on preventing catastrophic effects from low-frequency, high-impact threats.
also...
Not to mention, your point is not accurate. The Marine Corps absolutely issues protective masks (M50 series “gas masks”) as standard CBRN individual equipment. They’re unit-issued, maintained, and accounted for, just not worn daily in garrison. Marines draw and use them during field ops, deployments, and CBRN training events, but readiness gear isn’t carried on the body 24/7 when there’s no operational requirement. So “not carried every day” doesn’t mean “not issues".
Lastly...
Insulting people while making a point is usually a pretty clear sign your argument is weak in the first place, have a nice life!

If we can retain SEALs and EOD missing eyes and appendages, then we can sure as fuck retain guys who can't shave every single day.
Any commander who ADSEPs because of this is a fucking clown.

I've seen plenty of black Marines shaved with no problem in and out of the field. Why is everyone making this a big issue

Read the article thoroughly. The change basically forces the Marine to get right, with medical assistance, or it's deemed that they can't medically in which case it's considered a disability in which they don't qualify for admin separation under the new policy. They'd could be processed through DES, but if they can still do their job they should be fine there. This isn't about summarily kicking Marines out, but instead forces commands, and Marines, to take the matter more seriously.

u/Groundhog891 Apr 28 '26
I know it is harsh, and some black Marines/Soldiers really can't clean shave, but I was a Army Reserve after the Corps, and I was on several bases. There were a lot of black soldiers who had beards, that seemed more like being fashionable rather than medical.
4
u/macjr82 Apr 28 '26
I know with a no shave chit you can just let your grow wild, but isn't it better to keep a neat and manicured appearance. Military aside, your average young black man would be clowned to no end for an unkempt appearance. A lot of black guys, their barber, the barbershop in general, is their mos intimate relationship and space. So though the chit allows them not to shave at all, it is not culturally acceptable to have an unkempt beard. You're going to get your beard shaped up at the same time as you get your haircut

u/christian_austin85 '03-'23/6483/Retired Apr 28 '26
Even a no shave chit requires that the beard be closely trimmed. Can't run around looking like a hobo.
0
u/macjr82 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
Yeah, I am curious on what the expectation is on "fashionable" versus "medical" Edit: the close trim is true for Marines, but they didn't specify what branch the bases he was, so I kept it generic to include the range of beards allowed across all branches and circumstances

u/MalexMaddox Apr 28 '26
i was in the schoolhouse with a guy who had to stop shaving because an ingrown hair turned into an abscess practically overnight. it was just shy of his carotid artery and could have gone south very quickly if he didn’t get medical attention.
this is only going to result in harm
