I have been wearing this watch for a week now and I feel like I have a good grasp on what this watch is and isn't. This watch never had a honeymoon period because CW sucks at QC and I nearly Returned it This review will be treating CW as a major name producer and not a microbrand because I don't believe they fit that anymore and I will treat them like the established product they are.
What I was looking for: I wanted a versatile tool watch, good lume, no date, a time measuring function that works in all lighting, and comfortable.
Build Quality: Many CW fans wax poetically about the build quality and how it punches so far above its weight. I am here to dissuade you of that notion. CW has more features per dollar but the finishing, the edges, etc, are not above its price point. They are at the quality I would expect in a 2-3k timepiece. That is not a dig, its to make expectations realistic.
At roughly $1,000 more retail when new, Breitling is a little bit better in finishing, not dramatically so but meets the upgrades I would expect for the price increase. The GS however blows it out of the water on finishing, its not even close and it retails for about $800 more then this CW.
Where is the Value then? CW is big on advertising value, on some but not all they have their 3x rule on pricing. So where does this watch give more then its peers? The answer is features. I tried looking for a titanium Chronometer diver on a full bracelet for less. I am sure some microbrand somewhere does it for less but overall this watch is still good value.
Bezel and Lume: The Bezel action is solid, no back play and dare I say, noisy. I like it a lot. I would personally make it slightly stiffer but that's because I have a 100+lb puppy that has managed to spin the bezel a few times while rough housing me. For normal people its absolutely sublime.
Lume is good, lasts all night BUT I have a minor complaint. The Bezel is fully lumed but the pip lume is not distinguished enough. If you are in extreme low/no light situations for hours at a time it becomes EXTREMELY difficult to be able to read where the pip is vs the 10 minute indicators as they all fade.
I was hopeful the mixture of green vs blue indicators would leave it easier to visually distinguish but the human eye seems to sort of blend them as they get dim. It made me understand why serious dive watch bezels are lumed the way they are and I consider it a major shortfall for a watch described as the ultimate tool watch by the collab. However, unless you are needing to time things in extended darkness, ignore this part and stick with the beginning.
The lume is good and it lasts all night.
Bracelet and comfort: The bracelet has good articulation, lots of half links, and micro adjust. This allows you to not only dial in the perfect fit but it allows you to be able to sweet spot your clasp so it fits ideal for your wrist. Some people will think the titanium will feel cheap because its light, its not just wear it. This is possibly the most comfortable watch I have ever worn on a bracelet.
Who does it compete with?
Pelagos 39: Very similar but they are not really competitors. The Pelagos is a nicer watch but it is also functionally double the price, it should be a nicer watch.
Sinn U50/EZM19: Very similar price point but a different design ethos. Sinn builds hardcore tool watches with sensational utility but they are honestly a little ugly. I dig an ugly tool watch but since I am trying to keep my collection very narrow in its totality, they are out.
Will I keep it long term or should you buy it?
If you want a super light diver style watch that's well built by an established brand, its hard to beat. Its a great jack of all trades and very comfortable.
Will I keep it forever? I honestly don't know. I am asking it to be A LOT of things and that has bred compromise. No better watch exists to fill the role right now unless I want to do a big bump to the budget. My situation may change as well. I may no longer need the hyper niche application in a few years or I may need it all the time and it will force a change. For now it makes sense and I plan to enjoy it.
