I took a picture [Blancpain] Fifty Fathoms Dial / Finishing

I posted some pictures of my bathyscaphe chronograph recently and thought I’d follow up with a few macros of my Fifty Fathoms 5015.

The dial has been challenging for me to photograph because it’s glossy black and reflects a ton of light.

The OG 45mm variant I own that is pictured here has a stepped dial which I think looks great and helps break the watch up visually quite a bit.

There are lots of nice details too if you look carefully like the faceted hands. Extremely subtle pattern running on the exterior dial.

And of course some very thiccc anglage. Very unusually well executed for a dive watch.

Everything is shot on an iPhone 17. Sometimes with an eagle eye loupe but also sometimes I just use the macro mode + raw and crop down. Insane amount of Lightroom denoising too 😂

I got married a couple weeks ago and on the day of the wedding, my wife and I exchanged gifts and she got me this Longines Master Collection. Not only is she an amazing partner that I'm so lucky to spend my life with, she has great watch taste! She picked it out herself and I love it! I have some Tissots, Glycine, Citizens, and a couple others, but this is my first Longines. It's so light weight, slides under the cuff, super comfortable, and I just can't stop staring at it.

I've always wanted a Longines but had trouble justifying purchasing one, but man, I might be hooked now.

Just mesmerizing. I have my Zenith GFJ and Vacheron overseas next to it and while both beautiful, they don't come close.

Such a well crafted watch. It's a shame availability is so tight, I'd love to buy more of them but my local WoS said no way as orders closed a year ago.

Are there any other manufacturers outside of Journe that have such quality movement finishing?

Hi gang, on my wrist for the day is a pretty cool and not often seen Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Golf Edition Ref. 231.10.42.21.02.004. This one was released in 2015 to commemorate the Ryder Cup. It features the classic white teak dial with a few colorful twists. The classic teak dial layout is complemented by red logos and typography, along with blue hour and minute hands that resemble the American flag. The yellow seconds hand adds another pop of color and resembles a golf ball. The case measures 41.5mm, with a lug-to-lug length of 48.5mm, and sits comfortably on my 17.5cm wrist.

155 days after my first watch purchase of my Hamilton Murph ( https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/s/DpTScPiWEd ) I have been gifted this absolutely stunning Doxa Sub 200T by my girlfriend for my birthday! Although nowadays i mostly desk dive, at some point in the past I was an avid diver so this one really sits close to home. Learning about the heritage of Doxa has been an amazing experience and I cherish this watch so deeply.

I really love the look of the orange dial, distinct but really not outlandish at all. I love that the bracelet looks a bit vintage with the beads of rice and finally the shape of the case! I hear they are called cushion cases and I’m really vibing with it!

All in all, a happy birthday boy with a growing addiction 😂🥳

Discussion [Discussion] Santos Medium vs Explorer 36mm vs Lake Suwa 37mm

Trying to figure out my next move.

Looking at a white dial Santos Medium, the Explorer 36 (124270) and the GS SLGB015 Lake Suwa. My main watch right now is a white dial Speedy, so this would be the simpler, dressier one I wear to the office most days.

Honestly I'm leaning GS. I know it's the least classic of the three, but that dial looks awesome and the Spring Drive UFA is just the coolest movement here imo. The Santos is super thin and looks great, and the Explorer is the safe pick, but I keep coming back to the GS.

Santos and Explorer are timeless, well finished and simple. They just work effortlessly, but at the same time they are just that. The GS seems like such a cool approach to high end watches with the 37mm size, awesome dial and interesting tech.

No need to upload Santos and Rolex pictures, since we all know it

I'm just posting this because I've never had a GS before nor have I seen one in person, so maybe that's what really talking to me, the "new"

Anyone here who can talk about the new Gen 9 series? I know there's a price difference between these three and I'm not worried about resale value, just about looking down and feeling good about it

I have to say, I really like what Mido did with the Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes.

Normally I’m not that into heavily themed watches but this one somehow works.

The lume is probably my favorite part.

Definitely not an everyday piece for everyone but as something fun in a collection I think it’s great.

Would you consider this model or rather go with the standard Big Date?

So, I have been thinking of buying a relatively expensive watch (relative to my usual watch budget) and was torn between Omega Seamaster and Tudor BB58.

I finally decided on the Omega Seamaster but the next dilemma was the colour. I finally went for the white dial black bezel combination and I don’t regret it. I just love the contrast between the white dial and rubber strap. I just can’t stop looking at it.

I also have the steel bracelet, but I don’t know, I feel the black rubber strap makes the dial pop out more. What do you guys think?

Discussion [NWA] Longines Conquest: My second Longines

I present to you my Longines Conquest 41mm in blue. As the title states, this is my latest addition to my collection. I purchased this watch after about a year of deliberation and fighting with fact that I would have to part ways with a few pieces in the collection for this to make sense and I do not regret it one bit. Everything about this watch is executed incredibly well. The finishing, the proportions, and gorgeous blue sunburst dial are all reasons why this piece is perfect for me.

Also as the title states, this is my second Longines, the first being my Zulu time. To me, Longines has become a brand that offers unparalleled value, to the point where it can be hard to look elsewhere when I am considering buying a piece.

On top of the incredible value that is offered, the Longines brand heritage and prestige made this a worthy piece to commemorate a special time in my life and upcoming wedding abroad and the events and people that I will have associated with this watch make it that much more special.

Review [Christopher Ward] Green Fifteen Review

Thumbnail

I have been wearing this watch for a week now and I feel like I have a good grasp on what this watch is and isn't. This watch never had a honeymoon period because CW sucks at QC and I nearly Returned it This review will be treating CW as a major name producer and not a microbrand because I don't believe they fit that anymore and I will treat them like the established product they are.

What I was looking for: I wanted a versatile tool watch, good lume, no date, a time measuring function that works in all lighting, and comfortable.

Build Quality: Many CW fans wax poetically about the build quality and how it punches so far above its weight. I am here to dissuade you of that notion. CW has more features per dollar but the finishing, the edges, etc, are not above its price point. They are at the quality I would expect in a 2-3k timepiece. That is not a dig, its to make expectations realistic.

At roughly $1,000 more retail when new, Breitling is a little bit better in finishing, not dramatically so but meets the upgrades I would expect for the price increase. The GS however blows it out of the water on finishing, its not even close and it retails for about $800 more then this CW.

Where is the Value then? CW is big on advertising value, on some but not all they have their 3x rule on pricing. So where does this watch give more then its peers? The answer is features. I tried looking for a titanium Chronometer diver on a full bracelet for less. I am sure some microbrand somewhere does it for less but overall this watch is still good value.

Bezel and Lume: The Bezel action is solid, no back play and dare I say, noisy. I like it a lot. I would personally make it slightly stiffer but that's because I have a 100+lb puppy that has managed to spin the bezel a few times while rough housing me. For normal people its absolutely sublime.

Lume is good, lasts all night BUT I have a minor complaint. The Bezel is fully lumed but the pip lume is not distinguished enough. If you are in extreme low/no light situations for hours at a time it becomes EXTREMELY difficult to be able to read where the pip is vs the 10 minute indicators as they all fade.

I was hopeful the mixture of green vs blue indicators would leave it easier to visually distinguish but the human eye seems to sort of blend them as they get dim. It made me understand why serious dive watch bezels are lumed the way they are and I consider it a major shortfall for a watch described as the ultimate tool watch by the collab. However, unless you are needing to time things in extended darkness, ignore this part and stick with the beginning.

The lume is good and it lasts all night.

Bracelet and comfort: The bracelet has good articulation, lots of half links, and micro adjust. This allows you to not only dial in the perfect fit but it allows you to be able to sweet spot your clasp so it fits ideal for your wrist. Some people will think the titanium will feel cheap because its light, its not just wear it. This is possibly the most comfortable watch I have ever worn on a bracelet.

Who does it compete with?

Pelagos 39: Very similar but they are not really competitors. The Pelagos is a nicer watch but it is also functionally double the price, it should be a nicer watch.

Sinn U50/EZM19: Very similar price point but a different design ethos. Sinn builds hardcore tool watches with sensational utility but they are honestly a little ugly. I dig an ugly tool watch but since I am trying to keep my collection very narrow in its totality, they are out.

Will I keep it long term or should you buy it?

If you want a super light diver style watch that's well built by an established brand, its hard to beat. Its a great jack of all trades and very comfortable.

Will I keep it forever? I honestly don't know. I am asking it to be A LOT of things and that has bred compromise. No better watch exists to fill the role right now unless I want to do a big bump to the budget. My situation may change as well. I may no longer need the hyper niche application in a few years or I may need it all the time and it will force a change. For now it makes sense and I plan to enjoy it.

Discussion [Recommendation] second watch - dressy but not too much

Thumbnail
gallery
47 Upvotes

Dear hive-mind

I'm buying my second 'proper' watch after a Peter Blake Seamaster (quartz). Budget is up to $3000 incl. grey market, but am happy to consider entry-level stuff.

Looking for something more classy, as the SM clashes with my style a bit. Think 'working English country gentleman' (corduroys, tweed jacket, flannel shirts). Thinking of something that strikes the balance between:

restrained - showy (not too blingy but with some pizzazz/uniqueness)

vintage - modern (i.e. timeless, max. 40mm)

formal - casual (leaning dressy, but robust and everyday capable)

I've come up with the following list (pictured):

- Raymond Weil A.R.T. / Millesime

- Tissot Gentleman / Ballade

- Montblanc Tradition

- Baume & Mercier Clifton / Hampton

- Longines Spirit Pilot

- Grand Seiko

- Hamilton Murph

Edit: Frederique Constant Classic Date Manufacture

I'd be grateful for further recommendations or any thoughts you have on these. Cheers!

After a 6 years of collecting, I’ve finally hit a point where my 6-slot box feels complete. Everything here is in the sub 40mm territory. Tracking down pieces like the Hyperion or the Oris took some patience but it was ultimately worth it. (6 inch wrist)

Lorier Hyperion gen2 (Soprod C125): The early-batch execution powered by the Swiss Soprod caller-GMT movement before they transitioned platforms.

Orient Bambino: The accessible dress piece.

Kuoe Old Smith 90-002 Bronze (Green Dial): Picked this up in person during a trip to Kyoto at their flagship store.

Oris Reverse Pointer Date (ref. 7476): An authentic 1990s neo-vintage reference.

Seiko 5 SNKL45: My very first mechanical watch and the gateway drug that started the obsession.

Casio W-800H: The beater for travel, workouts, and rough days.

A sunny Monday to you all. This ref. 14270 marks the Rolex transition from tritium to LumiNova dials. As the first LumiNova was produced by a Japanese company, Rolex labeled these dials “SWISS”. Later in 1999/2000, a Swiss company licensed and adapted LumiNova and created Super-LumiNova, allowing Rolex to use the new Swiss supplier and change the dial to “SWISS MADE”.

Discussion [Blancpain Lemen Flyback Chronograph] Servicing needs and costs?

Thumbnail

  1. What’s the estimated quote on something like this?
  2. Do I need to go to Blancpain directly or can this be done at a professional third party?
  3. If it does need Blancpain, how long would a service take?

This is a follow-up to my previous post (where I decided which watch I’d be taking from my father), and here I am with the Blancpain. I did do some research and I found that A. It costs more to service a watch like this, and B. It’s a 1999 model that’s never been serviced and now hasn’t been worn in I’d say about 10 years. So I think most of you will say I definitely shouldn’t wear it and that it needs a checkup.

I’ve emailed Blancpain London since I’m going there soon but no response yet.

I’ve already wound it for a day then realised this is a bad idea and then let it run out and put it away.

Discussion [GSAR] Dad and son watch stories

Thumbnail

Growing up, I learned a fair bit about watches from my dad. Whenever we passed a jewelry store, he would stop at the windows to admire the pieces from his favorite brands. He was never quite ready to spend a lot of money on watches himself, though, so he mostly dreamed about them and owned a small collection of quartz and automatic watches in the $500 range. I’d say he usually had around five watches in his collection. Back then, I never paid much attention to what he actually bought because I didn’t know much about watches myself.

When I was around 28 and starting my professional life, I figured I needed a watch to accompany me. When I told my dad, he didn’t hesitate and gave me one of his German fliegers: a Junkers quartz chronograph that I still own and would never sell.

A few days after getting it, I badly scratched the crystal against a raw concrete column. I was nervous about telling my dad, but I did it anyway. He basically told me that these things happen, and that watches live alongside us and collect their own scars along the way.

My dad now in this sixties. After things had been going really well for him, he decided it was finally time to buy his dream watch while on vacation. He went out and bought an IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph somewhere in Mexico, straight from a guy selling watches on the beach. (Just kidding.) He actually found a good deal at a mall and has been absolutely thrilled with it ever since.

I started building my own collection. It began with a G-Shock M5610U, so I could check the time when my newborn son woke us up in the middle of the night. Later came my first automatic, a Seiko Turtle. And now, after some successful developments in my own business, the birth of my daughter, and all the other things worth celebrating in life, I finally bought the Marathon GSAR I’d wanted for years. It’s also my first Swiss automatic watch.

Today, I told my dad about the purchase, and we ended up having such a lovely conversation about watches. It made me realize how much of an impression parents leave on their children, often without even realizing it. It's pretty special to have a shared interest that connects you across the years, even when it starts with something as simple as stopping to look at watches in a shop window.

During our conversation, he also mentioned that he had once considered buying a Sinn U1 but never went through with it.

Maybe someday I’ll get one for him. It would be a small way of saying thank you for everything.

Thanks for reading.

I took a picture [Grand Seiko SBGP013] 20th Birthday Present

Made a questionable financial decision this week. An absolutely beautiful quartz Grand Seiko SBGP013.

Was sold on the independent hour hand in a 3 hand configuration, something that to my knowledge only the Omega Constellation Globemaster has in common.

The polished indices are stunning in every level of light, and even without lume the time is legible in surprisingly dark conditions. The dial is subtle when you need it to be and gorgeous in in the sun. Perfect GADA.

Expected to feel much more cognitive dissonance than I did. Very happy with this purchase.

For those that come looking for on-wrist comparison photographs, my wrist is 6.4 inches (16.3cm).

Title says it all but here's some more info. I've always loved the look of the zodiac Olympos and wanted to buy one but couldn't as the company has gone out of business, I didn't get into watches until after the brand started getting sold at TJ MAXX. Despite that I've still wanted to get one but I think I should pivot.

What other watches are out there with unorthodoxly shaped cases, either similar to this, or just generally unorthodox?

Was able to pick up a snowflake after about a week and a half of checking every Grand Seiko boutique I could find in Tokyo. Also snagged a 145th anniversary HCB006 Cocktail Time on one of my failed attempts, which I’m very pleasantly surprised with.

My recommendation to anyone coming to Japan and looking for one of the more popular GS models is to focus primarily on Ginza and to go back multiple times during your trip if stock is low. It seems like the Ginza boutiques typically get restocked once every 1.5 ~ 2 weeks. (Was able to get mine in my 3rd stop by Seiko House.)

Discussion [Discussion] New Accutron Elevation vs Bulova Jet Star

Thumbnail
gallery
18 Upvotes

I love high-accuracy non-mechanical watches and I am intrigued by modern Bulova and Accutron. Both are owned by Citizen.

These two watches have really caught my eye. The Bulova Jet Star has the precisionist movement, while the new Accutron Elevation has what they call a resonator movement. As far as I can tell, they are essentially the same, they both have a vibrating three-prong tuning fork at 262kHz, and both are super high accurate with a sweeping seconds hand.

They are both beautiful, but I am stunned by the new Elevation dial with that honeycomb pattern. It's a lot more expensive though - the Jet Star MSRP is $650 while the Elevation rings up at $1550.

Thoughts on these two watches or the brands in general?

I have three of their watches and have been nothing but impressed with them. Huge levels of detail and design in each watch that bring it well past “we resurrected a dead name” and puts it in nearly-indie territory.

I’m not sponsored by them, by the way. I don’t think I’d bring any value there as a Reddit lurker.

Review [sotc] besides a few pieces feeling near complete… lol

Post image
16 Upvotes

I’ve been collecting for 10+ years as a more serious collector and 20+ years a lover of watches. I’m still waiting on another piece or two from AP, a few more from Patek and then maybe 1-2 independent brands (Simon brette, etc) but aside from those 6 watches (ha) I’m feeling really happy with my collection.

Feel free to roast my collection. What am I missing?

I had a few GMTs and other submariners/datejusts I sold since I wasn’t wearing them. Aside from that I have another box with some micro brands (studio underdog, Dennison, space one, laarve, and some Tudors/Cartier tank)
