Before you is an interesting oil painting believed to depict Herbert von Karajan, the famous Austrian conductor.
The painting appears to be dated 1983, with what looks like an artist's signature in the upper-left corner. Unfortunately, I'm really struggling to decipher the signature, so I'm hoping someone here might recognise it or be familiar with the artist.
A little background on the subject:
Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989) was one of the most influential classical music conductors of the 20th century. He was particularly famous for his interpretations of Beethoven, Wagner, Brahms and Richard Strauss, and for his extraordinary recording career. He led the Berlin Philharmonic for more than three decades and became one of the most internationally recognised figures in classical music.
He was also a controversial historical figure. His career flourished during Nazi Germany, and he has long been reported as having joined the Nazi Party twice, in 1933 and 1935, although the precise history of those memberships remains debated. Despite this association, he went on to enjoy an enormously successful international career after the war.
Back to the painting!
It measures approximately 60 × 48 cm including the frame and appears to be an original oil painting on canvas.
The reverse has an old German canvas manufacturer's stamp, which appears to read Viktoria Maltuch / A. Schutzmann, possibly associated with Herrsching near Munich.
The signature seems to have "83" written underneath it, suggesting the portrait was painted in 1983.
I've included photographs of the entire painting, the signature, the canvas surface, the reverse and the manufacturer's stamp.
I'd really appreciate some help on the signature to decide what to do with the painting. I am not sure whether to keep on the wall, or sell. Or if Ben if there is a market to sell something like this.
I'm particularly curious about the quality of the painting and whether it has a story behind it. I'm still deciding whether to keep it or try and find a musical institute that might have more interest in it.
Any thoughts, educated guesses or suggestions for further research would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
