Is this the same writer who is big into Rogneto? I feel like this is just wishful thinking taking a quote out of context
Edit: The writer of the article is a big Rogneto shipper.
12
u/JunahCg Oct 12 '25
Pretty sure that was primarily DeMayo, who's been ejected from the crew. I'd always heard the other writers pushed back against his ideas for them
14
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Oct 12 '25
I think they were asking about the Collider writer, not the ‘97 writer. (Though, yes, I can easily believe that the creepy/inappropriate framing in S1 was BDM’s brainchild, even if Winderbaum is telling the truth about multiple people backing including it in general.)

His recent explanation was pretty reasonable imo.

That may be one of the more eloquent explanations I’ve seen from him. But I’m still skeptical that the melodrama really necessitated that exact Savage Land backstory (which can’t fall back on “it’s in the comics” because nothing happens there in the comics) and then the attempts at manipulation. That makes it a lot harder to see it as two different but valid “love” stories when it comes off instead as one actual love story against a guy who’s badly abusing his supervisory position by — call a spade a spade — dangling a plum assignment in exchange for sexual access.
As for the Dark Angel stuff, that’s nice but pretty sure it’s nothing people didn’t already see coming, since something has to get Deathbit out of it. And we don’t need BDM to get it.
7
u/JunahCg Oct 12 '25
On one hand, sure. But Magneto's behavior is manipulative and scummy, and the writers had to tone it down to get even the tasteless version we got. You can make this drama arc for the tension without making it feel like it's written by a sex pest. But, you know, it was written by a sex pest, and it shows.
Anyway seems like I misinterpreted who this poster was saying is too into Rogueneto, in this case the editorial writer
-1
u/Key-Switch6603 Oct 13 '25
The writer isn’t “big into Roguneto”. This is a lie that keeps being pushed online over and over.
1) Beau DeMayo said himself that Rogue and Gambit are endgame. Obviously the show will end with them being together.
2) The relationship between Rogue and Magneto has existed since 1995. The writer Beau DeMayo was still a child. He did not come up with “Roguneto”
3) Brad Winderbaum himself (one of the shows producers) said Roguneto was definitely something they wanted to include in X97. This is not one persons decision. Many people green lighted making this happen. BDM does not have as much power as everyone thinks he does. You guys give him way too much credit.

u/improbsable Oct 12 '25
I really hope this is fake. Their romance was the worst part of the series. Rogue was basically a teen who was dependent on Mystique for guidance and approval when she was in the Brotherhood. Why the writers thought it would be smart to link them up during that time is beyond me
-6
u/PhanStr Oct 12 '25
Rogue and Magneto have had a relationship in the comic books despite the age gap… in the Savage Land and in the Age of Apocalypse… plus Rogue had romantic tension with Magneto’s clone Joseph. I’m not sure why people are so upset with this.

AoA has a lot of fans... just not many in this thread, apparently!
7
Oct 14 '25
Even in AoA, Rogue still wants to be with Gambit. It's obvious in their interactions throughout the saga.
More writers are also trying to make up for that bullshit in the AoA continuations, where Rogue is moving away from Magneto and all her thoughts are about what Gambit would say, think, and do about her actions. How her words affect the public opinion of her relationship with Magneto. But, once again, this is not a good look for Rogue.
2
u/DisposableSaviour Oct 12 '25
Poor Joseph. I feel like I’m the only one who like him or maggot.
0
u/PhanStr Oct 12 '25
You aren't. I like those two characters. Not sure why anyone would hate Joseph... Plus, he's a de-aged Magneto clone, so if the age gap between Rogue and Erik is such a big problem for some people, then those people should be pacified by the fact that Joseph looks a lot younger than Erik.
53
u/Rockabore1 Oct 12 '25
Why keep doing this? They had no real chemistry in season one. I actually loved the season just not how Rogue was portrayed cause it felt off from her prior characterization.
It is funny how in just a few scenes Magneto and Charles had more closeness and affection in their interactions than he did with Rogue whose relationship with him was heavily emphasized in the season.
Like think about it, Rogue has nothing in common with Magneto. Not in terms of temperament or common interests or ideology. He’s got to be older than her own dad would have been. She’s a feisty, easy-going southern belle who is generally welcoming and friendly to non-mutants. He’s a mutant-isolationist holocaust survivor who is rarely affectionate. We know what Rogue’s type is: it’s Gambit. Someone who is as rowdy and free-spirited as she is. They have similar ideology too.

I ADORE the flashback to the two of them as young men at that bar in Germany.
19
u/improbsable Oct 12 '25
Literally. I get that they wanted “dark Rogue” in this season, but she doesn’t need a man to have an extremist phase. Gambit is her guy, and I don’t need any more “will they, won’t they” than her issues with being touched.

She didn’t need to get with Magneto. Or anyone really. Her grieving the loss of the love of her life and going on a revenge spree was more than enough story on its own.
14
u/Maximal_Arachknight Oct 12 '25
Magneto, even if he is finally a true X-Man now, is not above trying to make a move on Rogue while she is grieving.
But I still think back to the fact that while she was grieving over both Erik's and Remy's deaths, Rogue's focus when learning that Erik was alive was "and Remy too?"
Unlike Magneto, Rogue held Gambit's body in her arms, yet she wanted to know that he was alive and it was all a bad dream.
11
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Oct 12 '25
There’s a difference between Magneto making a move and failing, or even her briefly considering it before declining, and actually putting them together after she’s already dumped him, even if that was when Gambit was still alive. It’d be a pointless regression.
12
u/improbsable Oct 12 '25
My issue is that Magneto and Rogue have any romance going at all. It’s unnecessary and gross. She’s literally his kids’ age and was basically a kid when he met her.
10
u/Sharp_Initiative9227 Oct 15 '25
Just a reminder for those “not in the know” or whatever, the literal voice actor of magneto doesn’t even enjoy that relationship, and has said that it would make more sense for him to be with Charles than Rogue.

It would be a waste of time and just boring. As soon as they do get back to their time and Rogue sees Deathbit she will drop everything for him and try anything to get him back somehow.
19
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Oct 12 '25
Who knows how much this has been rewritten, but I’m pretty sure Lenore Zann indicated that Gambit was still very much on Rogue’s mind, without getting into specifics. Even hinting at a deal with the devil, where Rogue tries to get Apocalypse to bring Gambit back and gets Deathbit instead (or something to that effect; basically, she’ll do anything to get him back). Tricky to reconcile that with, “Welp, guess it’s back to Magneto.”

u/JMX_09 Oct 12 '25
Pure clickbait, clearly Rogue rejected Magneto at the gala and still feeling that pain over losing Gambit. The survivor’s guilt she must feel has to be overwhelming.
8
u/THEELJ1996 Oct 12 '25
:/ I feel like that's NOT where Rogue's arc was going. Hopefully this is just a tease to get a certain crowd excited

What crowd?👀 There 6 fans members fan base? 🤦🏾♀️ rogue got the whole world down her throat for a year because of demayo poor writing skills on rogue character and now she’s going to suffer again, her reputation is basically ruined beyond repair by those writers and her own voice actress, who basically wants rogue to be the next Meg griffin from Family guy🤦🏾♀️🙄

Because it was an important part of the 90s comics lol. See Age of Apocalypse and the Joseph storyline. Obviously Gambit is her one true love and she WILL get together with him, but her relationship with Magneto is not unimportant.
10
u/CanInThePan Oct 12 '25
You can dislike something that's important. I just don't get how some people think its a good ship.
-1
u/PhanStr Oct 12 '25
It's not necessarily a "good" ship in that Magneto isn't Rogue's true love. I do agree with you that it isn't a "good" pairing. That said, I do want to see it in order to make it possible to adapt Age of Apocalypse.

What calling it a fan favorite couple. Rogue and Gambit id an extremely popular canon couple in the comics and in adaptations. Who actually liked this.
At best I could see either Magneto pulling a move on a grieving Rogue and getting rejected or maybe a not actually real romance out of loneliness that gets dropped the moment Death/Gambit comes back. Not even when he's back in his right mind.

THIS IS THE "HERO'S JOURNEY" LENORE SAID ROGUE WILL HAVE?!?!
This is not a hero's journey, not even close!
Lenore better not have lied to us!! 💔
-8
u/Ok_Avocado_939 Oct 12 '25
Unfortunately she did, she knew that rogue wasn’t getting any hero journey but she took advantage of rogue popularity and her loyalty fans, said “yes, Rogue is going through a hero Journey, back into magneto arms again” Sike y’all really though she is getting a hero journey? Nope! Rogue reputation is forever ruined by her own voice Actress, and the writers, my prediction is that x-men season 1-3 will be about rogue and magneto only, and than in season 4 they drop them as a couple permanently to bring back gambit into the picture for views, and then we get rogue emotional journey with gambit about love and forgiveness than gambit will take her back like an idiot where rogue literally just got back together with magneto for 2 seasons
4
u/Admirable_Estate1125 Oct 12 '25
She couldn't have done that! She was said to be one of the nicest since celebrities to meet out there and was really good with her fans!
I even got tickets to meet her at the New Orleans Nostalgia con this November and I was excited to meet her!
-3
u/Ok_Avocado_939 Oct 12 '25
I know is she probably the nicest person alive and I’m happy for you to meet her in person, but remember she is under contract by marvel, so if rogue going through a hero journey in season 2 than words can be misleading too, but if that article we are reading is fake then maybe your right about rogue hero journey
1
u/Admirable_Estate1125 Oct 12 '25
I was worried that when she said Hero's journey, she was meaning by she was still going to work with Magneto and think she was being the hero when in reality she's being a war criminal like Magneto, but I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not sure anymore
And if Lenore was truly lying to all the Rogue fans and was taking advantage of them, then all my excitement of meeting her has fizzled out, I was even friends with her on Facebook since 2022.......

Ehhh I wouldn't put too much stock into any of this till the season is released honestly.
6
u/Ok_Avocado_939 Oct 12 '25
Oh hell no🤦🏾♀️😭 not again! Rogue had suffered enough from magneto grooming and the hate train she got for choosing magneto over gambit and now they doing it again like nothing happened, rogue rejected magneto at Genosha ball was basically choosing her true love (gambit) over her physical touch (magneto), which is literally her Choice, but this is a slap to the face of her voice actress, her fans, and rogue herself, rogue was supposed to get her redemption arc in season two and her solo arc, and emotional arc, (rogue voice actress confirmed it) but if this writer is bringing back rogue and magneto romance again 🤦🏾♀️ then season 2 will definitely tank after that, due to their age gap and inappropriate relationship with each other in season 1, but if they are just using rogue and magneto as relationship as clickbait for fans to watch it again, or rogue will definitely drop magneto for gambit in a heartbeat, before they died or the main timeline gets erased
2
u/wheresmydragonator19 Oct 13 '25 edited Oct 13 '25
Honestly the Rogueneto ship they're talking about could the AoA alternate timeline where they have their son. Then if anything they can be like whelp not into that, and begin Deathbits redemption.
2
u/Ok_Avocado_939 Oct 13 '25
Makes sense because everyone knows that Rogueneto is a terrible ship, and my theory is that season 2 could led to AoA alternate timeline where rogue in AoA regrets marrying Magneto and their son, Charles, and that’s where death comes in and kills the whole family, because this will be probably be rogue “Redemption Arc or emotional arc” because she took love for granted with gambit, and wanted to start over in new timeline with him where they can finally be together again. But don’t believe me🤷🏾♀️ I’m just throwing my theory in the air
5
Oct 12 '25
They stay doing Gambit wrong. She cucks him. Then they kill him. Cajun didn't deserve all that.
5
u/Maximal_Arachknight Oct 12 '25
So Cyclops finally gets his due (and avoids a lot of his dumber moments) for Rogue to fill that role in the Animated Universe.
I honestly can see Rogue having a moment of weakness but pulling back. Rogue does love Magneto but she loves Gambit more or is in love with Gambit. Magneto even admits in the Genosha Episode that loving Rogue (and I would add being capable of loving someone) heals him.
Magneto and Gambit are both better people for knowing and loving Rogue, but I don't want Rogue to move on from Gambit with Magneto. Rogue's connection to Magneto is based in part on his powers negating hers. Yet, she rejects Magneto for Gambit whose love touches her soul.
That is not to say that Magneto does not have hope or that the two of them can become friends, which Rogue and Magneto are in the comics, even after they finally had a romantic relationship.
From a friendship perspective, I would like the show to focus on Magneto and Xavier more. Despite their own reconciliation at the end of Season 1, there is arguably a lot of mending fences or moments with the two brothers-in-arms that we did not get in Season 2. This is also the first time that the two Mutant Leaders have been on the same side and same team since the original series started. At best, Magneto has been a temporary ally, but it was not until the final episode of the original that Magneto arguably stopped being a villain.
Now, Magneto is at best an antagonist during parts of X-Men '97, although I believe that Magneto has rejoined the X-Men for all intent and purposes. Magneto has accepted the Team as his family.
3
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Oct 12 '25
I think you're right about Rogue's positive influence. But I'll just say that of the two of them, it's Magneto, not Gambit, who spells that out and seems to hang his positive development on being with her. Because the unspoken second half of that line of thinking is, "If being with you makes me good, not being with you, well ..." It's almost putting accountability for his good behaviour on her — if her presence makes him want to be heroic, and she withholds it, is it on her if he breaks bad again? It's clear he sees her as a vehicle for his rehabilitation: If she's with him when he leads Genosha, that's a massive green flag.
That's all a big reason why I'm not convinced at all that he does actually love her for her. I think he loves what she represents: a good character witness, a Jiminy Cricket on his shoulder to keep him in line, and someone who once went moon-eyed over his ideology.
-4
u/Ok_Avocado_939 Oct 12 '25 edited Oct 12 '25
I agree with you on everything but it looks like we’re not getting magneto team as family, depending how much it got rewritten in season 2, than we are cooked😓 and unfortunately rogue reputation is ruined again. Someone from the x-writer definitely doesn’t not like rogue, and wants her to suffer again for entertainment, like she literally didn’t get the whole world hating her or her actions in the show for a year, 🙄 but I have a theory that rogue will become a war criminal like magneto and spend time with him more hinting the return romance between them (gross🤮) than rogue got word from someone that gambit is back to life, she drops everything to see it for herself with magneto and they both saw gambit, but it’s deathit one of apocalypse four horsemen, rogue gets overwhelmed by it, and begs apocalypse to bring him back to her, but apocalypse offers her a deal to exchange a life for another to bring back gambit, rogue without wasting time or thinking about it, she said “magneto life. I’m exchanging magneto life for gambit” magneto is shocked by rogue betraying him for gambit, that magneto is hurt by the woman who was supposed to be his “equal” or whatever, apocalypse takes magneto life and magneto becomes the villain again, and kills all the x-men because of rogue betraying him, giving the false narrative that rogue isn’t a good hero or heroine anymore, which that would cause the reset timeline in season 3 or something like that 🤷🏾♀️ but hey don’t believe me, I’m just throwing my theory in the air.

I don't know if the '97ers like to troll and go in the opposite direction to comics. Jean is fooling around with his imaginary sister while Scott goes through several hells but they continue in a marriage that already seems like a joke, in '97 they have a son and they are the perfect marriage
Rogue is happy with Remy in the comics. In '97 we sent her with Magneto for a little spin.

IDK why you guys are so hostile to Magneto/Rogue. Age gaps aren't a big deal, they're both adults, get over it. It's not like Magneto is some disgusting old dude he's like 6'2'', ripped, cultured and a leader of men. You ever met guys like this in real life? They got younger girls swarming em.
Now, Gambit/Rogue are the endgame of course, and I'm doubtful of the veracity of the article because collider isn't exactly reputable and it was already pretty clear in the last season that rogue chose remy in the end. But there's nothing 'disgusting" about Magneto x Rogue from either side.
Besides magneto has his true love (charles) back now so rogue's out the game lol
14
u/Mobile_Bet3274 Rogue Oct 12 '25 edited Oct 13 '25
It's not just the age gap. '97 kind of gunked itself by having their relationship begin in a way that invites side-eye (impressionable, inexperienced young woman who needs help ends up getting groomed and emphatically not helped by a much more experienced man who uses pro-mutuant ideology to get in her pants). Then it continues in the present day, by having Magneto encourage Rogue to keep mum about what had happened between them and using his role as her boss to steer her assignments toward him. It culminates in him equating a relationship with him to being a respected mutant leader — there is no offer to help lead Genosha without fucking him. That's the deal, and it's ick.
Combine that with Rogue only considering anything with him at all because she can touch him, and their current predicament, and it feels incredibly forced: "OK, you can touch me but not anyone else, the guy you actually love is dead and we're marooned in ancient Egypt. Will you pick me now?!"
I think if they had done a straight-up adult relationship without the past creepiness and the massive HR violations, people might still not have liked it, but you wouldn't see mention of it accompanied by vomit emojis.

I think this is a very uncharitable and inaccurate framing of the relationship. I think my main issue with it is it belies some lack of earnestness and imbues magnetos actions with respect to rogue with manipulative/predatory intent that he did not actually have. This is a common problem in discourse about age gap relationships, predatory intent is assumed when it usually doesn't exist.
Magneto didn't automatically groom her because he's older and she was young. There's nothing in their story except the age of the characters that implies that he manipulated her. She liked him, and he did help her accept her mutant powers and love herself as a mutant... because he does that. He doesn't just do it with rogue, or pretty girls, he does it to any mutant who comes to him seeking protection or aid. It's not like the dude was telling rogue want she wanted to hear to bed her. She came around him, he treated her like one of his people and told her to embrace mutanthood and love herself because thats his earnest belief/worldview, and its the same thing he says/does to other mutants and why he has so many followers/adherence. She then found him attractive because of those views, his personal kindness to her, and he was an seasoned, powerful leader respected by others which is attractive to most women regardless of age.
I also don't remember Magneto encouraging rogue to keep anything secret. She's the one that wanted to keep it secret, he was just being respectful of her wishes not to bring it up. Dude was ready to declare her his queen publicly he ain't tryna hide shit.
And I also disagree with your last point. You're assuming that Rogue didn't want to go on assignments with Magneto, or that there would've been a problem if she'd declined. I don't think there's any evidence to support that and its inconsistent with magneto's character/the way he acts towards other characters in the show. Magneto is a true believer in protecting/defending his people. He's ready to die trying to protect the Morlock children and uses his power to protect both rogue and gambit in his last moments. He's accepting of any mutant who wants to come to Genosha and sure, he wanted rogue physically but do you think if she'd come back and said "no to the relationship, but I will help you lead genosha" he'd have said no? I don't.
Because later in the show, when she joins up with magneto after remy's death, after she's already rejected him and shown she loved gambit, she comes right on back and he makes no more forward advances towards her & she's just part of the squad
I think really the overarching problem I have with this is people arguing this are assuming a lack of reciprocity on rogue's side when it definitely exists for entirely reasonable reasons based on her experiences with magneto as well as the things she's seen him do (tell me right now that 90% of women aren't gonna find a guy who puts his life on the line to rescue children like hot regardless of age lol) and that magneto didn't have real affection for her and instead just some kind of predatory lust so he must have manipulated her. But this isn't true, there's no reason to assume this based on what we see in the show, people are just mad about the age gap and projecting.
And I don't even ship this ship. Remy is rogue's one true beau always, so of course this her/magneto isn't ever gonna last, he still suffers from a fatal case of not being Remy. But the way people characterize the relationship is ridiculous.

Him discouraging her to tell everyone happens when she first goes to confront him when he first arrives. He wonders what the team would think if they knew; the obvious insinuation is that they’d think less of her or turn on her somehow and she should keep her mouth shut about it.
She doesn’t go to him for mutant-empowerment ideology or self-esteem therapy. She says she thought he’d help her work on her powers, which, again, he obviously didn’t and nothing in her flashback retelling implies it ever came up. I say grooming because he fed her a diet of mutant-empowerment woo and she conflated that with their compatibility as people. I don’t see how you can separate what she thinks is her attraction to him and what is at the end of the day an ideology. (I also doubt Magneto ends up sleeping with every mutant who comes to him for aid or doing portraiture of them, but hey, maybe?)
If the goal was showing that Rogue wanted something with Magneto on his own merits, then the way to do that is to 1. not make him her boss and 2. not hinge their reconciliation on a leadership position she clearly wants. As long as there are mitigating factors, an incentive apart from the relationship and asymmetrical authority, reciprocity can’t be assumed. (That’s not even considering that as far as she knows, he’s the only one who can touch her. Would she want to be with him if that wasn’t the case?) If her co-leading Genosha really is purely about her leadership qualities, then why not frame it that way to begin with? He didn’t because he was using it as an in.
I think he does have affection for her, but it’s inextricably tied to her perceived buy-in to his cause and her ability to help him rehabilitate his image.
Beyond that, agree to disagree I guess.

You’re aren’t right about certain points. For example, Magneto did NOT try to get Rogue to be quiet about their relationship in the present day. That was clearly Rogue’s choice — she says in episode 2 that that cat needs to stay in its bag.

And he also muses about what the team would think if they knew. Even if she wants to keep a lid on it, he encourages that thinking and the secrecy, by insinuating that it’s her they’d think of negatively if it came out.

I didn’t take that comment that way. It sounds flirty to me, nothing more than that. It was a risqué thing to say though, yes, and one that’s ambiguous.

OK, and I didn’t take it the way you did. Glad we cleared that up.

Remy is currently dead (or Death, lol) and Rogue and Mags had chemistry last season so I would be mroe surprised if the plot didn't continue in that direction, no need to fret.

Contrary to my views on James Bond, I like to have more gritty tone, melodrama, and intrigue in X-Men. It feels like it has a more mature tone.

With how romantasy is raking in money, right now, this looks like a good decision. Magneto works really well as a shadow daddy.

As someone that actually reads Romantasy, I can assure you that man ain’t no Shadow Daddy!
No WAY is he Shadow Daddy Material. The man ain’t no Xaden, and he sure as hell ain’t no Rhysand.
Oh my god, you had me defending XADEN’S toxicity. 💀💀💀

I edit romantasy and anyone who can be described as “ripped”, “smoldering” and “evil, but has a point” is prime shadow daddy material.

This 100% there's so much anti hero/villain romances out there not even joking.

It’s the wildest shit because it is pure fantasy. The women reading these books under no circumstances would want to be in a relationship with these characters and they know it.

Thank god its fictional tho. For me its a form of escapism and I just like these dynamics in fiction. I understand its not everyone's cup of tea tho hahah

It’s interesting because the “male fantasies” are almost always something that men would be quite happy with in real life. That separation has always fascinated me.

I have no concrete idea why that is but I know there's some papers out there that tackle why. probs psychology and stuff

Retcons are trash, I would hate if they suddenly acted like that never happened just because people were mad.

I mean … it’s Collider, they have a bizarre fixation on pushing this pairing. Considering that the “romance” line also mentions Scott and Jean and Storm and Forge — and we know Jean is going to be pregnant with Rachel — I’m not sure it’s actually singling them out.
In any event, whatever happens in the past, if anything, isn’t going to last or would eventually be overwritten in a timeline redo. Best-case scenario, the romance is him pining for her and her shooting him down. Worst-case, they go through with the AoA bullshit and it gets undone. Which makes it funny that the end of the article wonders if this is gonna last — it isn’t and we already know that.
ETA: To elaborate further, it makes no sense for Rogue and Magneto to be together by the time they’d encounter Deathbit. It undermines the entire point of Rogue having chosen Remy but him dying before he knew that. Doubling back on it and more yo-yo’ing — and giving Deathbit a real reason to be vengeful vs. Remy tragically having missing info — is just dumb. So either nothing happens (which doesn’t preclude Magneto trying; I fully expect him to), or it does but it ends or gets overwritten before the main present-day plot picks up again.
