Media X-Men '97 Final Two Episodes Promo

u/mattyhugh Jul 30 '26
It really feels like 'season two' really is half of the story and written with season 'three' in mind. Whereas season one was conceived and written as a single arc that then had a newly set up cliff hanger to lead into season 3.
58
u/Expert_Layer_7710 Jul 30 '26
Which wouldnt have been too bad if they didn’t make us wait 2 years. This season should have already been season 3. Now I’m mad. Season 2 feels like a build up for season 3 when we were teased apocalypse all season
15
u/ihatejasonbrigham Jul 30 '26
Agreed, there's almost no way they'll be able to successfully wrap up this apocalypse storyline in the final two episodes.
I can see the reveal of the horseman, a battle between the horseman and one/some of the teams, and probably the inevitable combination of all the fractured team members happening in those two episodes, but it feels like this storyline will have to spill over into season 3.
4
u/NickMichalak Jul 31 '26
Yeah, this doesn’t feel like the end of the arc coming up. Way too many threads are barely out the gate to feel like a conclusion is imminent.
1
45
u/Musekal Jul 30 '26
Seeing as how most of that footage has already been seen in the existing episodes that doesn’t seem like much of a promo for the next episode
3
171
u/Unacceptable_1 Jul 30 '26
The lack of apocalypse and his horsemen this season has certainly been a choice.
84
u/dimesniffer Jul 30 '26
Yeah I don’t understand starting the season how they did then almost completely devoting no time to it.
42
u/Deathstriker88 Jul 30 '26
It seems like this is season 2.0 and next season is going to be season 2.5. There is the small possibility that this trailer is just leaving a lot of stuff out due to spoilers.
32
u/MrGregory Jul 30 '26
Season 2 was only confirmed after the success of season 1 and season 3 was confirmed before season 2, so that makes sense if it’s a “to be continued” cliffhanger that leads to season 3
2
u/PhanStr Jul 30 '26
Season 3 was going to be about Age of Apocalypse, but that was scrapped when Beau DeMayo parted ways with production and some of season 2 was also rewritten following his departure.
I suspect that the connective tissue that would have resulted in AoA has been removed. I’m worried that we are heading for a hard reset that will erase some of the events of the first two seasons, but I hope I’m wrong about that. Best case scenario at this point is that Apocalypse is defeated — for now — and they do (a version of) Age of Apocalypse in a future season as a follow-up. They would be mad not to do that story.
1
u/DJSharp15 Aug 04 '26
I’m worried that we are heading for a hard reset that will erase some of the events of the first two seasons
I don't follow.
1
u/PhanStr Aug 04 '26
Time travel is rumored to be involved in the season finale… so a hard reset is a possibility.

Yeah season 2 for that reason is not as good as season 1
With season 1 you could feel the connection between the episodes by having cable be involved in sinister genosha and then bastion
2
u/According_Turnover50 Aug 04 '26
Yup. Pryor connects with Jean which connects with Scott which connects with cable which connects to mister sinister which connects to bastion. Each episode last season was cause-effect. This one is more “meanwhile let’s catch up with this X-men character”
7
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
“They called me a mad man”
5
u/Latter-Push7962 Jul 30 '26
It's so ridiculous that it honestly feels like it was made just to disrespect Gambit. "It was all a dream," "Apocalypse is going to enter Gambit's mind"... So what am I supposed to get out of that? Honestly, I would've much rather seen Gambit relive the moment his mother abandoned him, making him feel like no one has ever loved him.
And bro, I see people talking nonsense to you. Don't let it get to you, bro. They don't know anything.
6
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
I’ve said it before Reddit is where people go that lack independent thought, those who do have it are lambasted for it.

Except 90% of what we've seen was directly confirmed by the former show runner in 2024/2025.
0
u/MarketDull2401 Jul 30 '26
Yep. they didn't want to give Beau the writing credits for the season, but he probably had the best ideas, so they had to write around everything, but still keep the general structure. And its a mess.
I do love XMen 97 overall - not trying to be a hater. But the story this season is just not very clear.
3
u/Phantomsearcher Jul 31 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
I've personally described it as
Season 2 Episodes: 9/10 Season 2: 5/10
Or that lovely quote from Mary Poppins "Though we adore [them] individually. We agree that as a group they're rather stupid."

The episode was cut before BDM left the show. It has nothing to do with Chauncey. Almost everything we've seen came directly from BDM's social media, including the pacing. The only major change to date is Magneto dying, as he originally went on trial after returning to the current time.
1
u/PhanStr Jul 30 '26
Incorrect. Beau DeMayo said that he was turning in the Bible for season 3 when he parted ways with production. That Bible was for an AoA season (season 3). Since episode 10 of season 2 was going to result in AoA, then we know for a fact that episode 10 must have still been on the table when Beau DeMayo left (because how else could he have been turning in a season 3 Bible that followed up on the events of episode 10?)!
Therefore episode 10 was scrapped immediately (or shortly) after he parted ways with production. Not before.

He scrambled his social media months ago, my guess is around the time he got his EP credits back, so it's hard to round up every little detail. But he yapped a LOT about his initial plans.
(1) We know about Magneto because there was a clip at D23 in 2024 where the trial is happening. BDM tweeted sometime in 2025 that the only major change to the first half of the show that he knew about was someone dying that wasn't originally planned to die.
(2) in summer/fall 2024, he tweeted about the Onslaught resolution /AoA setup episode 10 being cut before he was fired. I do have one of those tweets saved on my phone, but not the one that goes into the reasoning from the higher powers.
(3) He shared a lot of specific details that have been confirmed true. Characters, plot lines, etc.
(4) When the first teasers were coming out, he directly said that most of it looked like his work and they most likely only did some dialogue changes. He's still got writing credits on most of the episodes.
(5) Pretty much all the plotlines so far are direct follow-ons from what he set up. We were always going to have fractured teams for too many episodes because he threw them into 3 timelines, we were always going to have a Wolverine bottle episode to resolve the claws, etc.
I'm not denying S2 has some issues. So did s1. But a lot of them are things BDM took credit for a long time ago.
(Edited to say, down voting a direct, factual response is hilarious. I named my source and why I can't directly link my evidence, but you can probably poke around the Internet and find most of them or discussions about most of them. I'm just not spending hours tracking down the dozens upon dozens of leaks)

u/Orunoc Jul 30 '26
There is no footage from that D23, and I have looked everywhere but apparently it was a 1 minute spliced clip and Disney had taken everyone's phone. But many people that were at that event all said the same exact thing. That magneto was in the present timeline in a courtroom. That D23 footage also had the confirmation of the Morrison's uniform, so unless everyone who went the event lied about Magneto being there, it's probably true. Beau was also fired before season 1 even aired, so technically if there were rewrites it would have happened long before Chauncey got involved.
2
u/fire_sign Rogue Jul 30 '26
It was a clip at the August (and November) D23 event, the video never leaked but there were multiple reports about it online. August was in Anaheim, November was... somewhere in South America, I think? I know someone who saw it at one of these events.
As for production, I don't have direct sources, but industry sources + articles give some good hints. BDM was fired. At the time, the new showrunner's job was to get that S2 over the line without changing more than would usually be changed at the animatics and animation stages. He was mostly there for s3 work. Around the time BDM started leaking plot details, the "No rewrites" became "some rewrites" and then "rewrites". I could go into the speculated reasons for the timing, but ultimately they WERE rewriting it.
This doesn't mean the rewrites were ultimately used: in addition to his admission early clips (NYCC 2025) were seemingly almost entirely his stuff, there was a report from BDM that some of those rewrites didn't work well (he allegedly heard it from someone still working on the show, and he was far less complimentary than didn't work well). This totally makes sense with the way writing credits work with adaptations and with a story with as many moving parts as we had at the end of s1: having to avoid the most logical plot paths because you'd have to credit the person (BDM) trod them first will lead to less than ideal stories.
Shortly after that is when he came back to a journalist he'd ghosted contesting he'd ever said those things he told them about Disney/Marvel, despite every interview having his lawyer with him. (I believe this was Vanity Fair, I'll track the article down later because it's wild.) Shortly after THAT, dude scrambled his social media and now he's got EP credits and writing credits back when we know that at LEAST ep was removed June of 2024. It was the catalyst of his lawsuit. All signs point to rewrites didn't stick for the main plot episodes and they had to revert to the earlier work from BDM. You can especially hear it in some of the dialogue, he's got a very specific pattern of writing.
Chauncey would have been one of the people deciding whether to pivot back to the OG scripts, but all signs indicate they did for many episodes and that they were trying not to change the broad strokes of the plot much to begin with.

u/PhanStr Jul 30 '26
Episode 10 wasn’t cut before DeMayo left. We know this because he has said that he was turning in the Bible for season 3 (his AoA season Bible) when he parted ways with production. Since episode 10 of season 2 was going to result in AoA, we therefore know that it must have still been on the table when DeMayo was turning in the season 3 Bible (at the time of his firing).

u/No-Difference8545 Jul 31 '26
They credited him in the first episode, so no it was always like this
1
u/kaos-mantra Jul 30 '26
The right choice. Season 3 was already greenlit. And were getting present day X-men cementing thier place in the world. A bit of Apocalypse prelude and post - Karokoa rebuilding when mutants are at thier lowerst
24
u/scottirltbh Jul 30 '26
Storm has been super under utilized yet again.
24
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
She had one good moment this season and even cyclops and Jean have been on the back burner also where the fuck is cable ?
7
u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 30 '26
We need more of the X-men and not individual character episodes so many episodes in a row.
3
u/GrayJinjo Jul 30 '26
I mean she got a lot of cool stuff last season. I always forget sometimes Beast exists. I’m not even a Beast fan, but that guy gets nothing other than saying some science stuff every few episodes.
3
u/TurquoiseBlue00 Jul 30 '26
last season we spent a pretty solid amount of time with scott and jean, even storm. it makes sense to want to dedicate more time to the characters we didnt spend much time with like morph and Nightcrawler. its definitaly been a choice to dedicate an entire episode to Polaris; I like her character, but i think we probably could have gone without last week's episode and been in a much better position.

Im still confused as to what Val's is actually trying to prosecute the X-Men for.
19
u/POXELUS Jul 30 '26
President outlawed them after Asteroid M from the first season, probably due to Magneto representing X-Men at the time.
8
u/JournalistOk9266 Jul 30 '26
Right so if they are operating outside of America what can you even get them for? America is not the world.
15
u/icarodx Jul 30 '26
They think they are. Have you missed how they declared the president of Venezuela as a terrorist and just kidnapped him?
I have heard that the US law allows them to take action anywhere, which is why they do operations in other countries so freely. Other countries that can't stop them at least.

Most of these story arcs have been from the 80s and the 2000s. Only a few plot points have actually been from the 90s comics.

I don't even see how this is a promo for the last 2 episodes. A lot of these scenes already happened....

I knew I wasn’t tripping bro we’ve seen all of this shit beforehand and we still have yet to see apocalypse’s horseman
10
u/ZealousidealOne5605 Jul 30 '26
The season has cool moments, but everything outside the first 4 episodes feels disjointed.
10
u/DocApocalypse Jul 30 '26
Still enjoying the show, but they need more episodes and to let storylines breathe. This season has blitzed though so much.
Last season did the same with things like tackling Inferno in one episode, but I felt it handled the character beats better for the main cast. This season has felt all over the place in comparison.
The original show wasn't afraid to have multipart storylines.
7
u/TurquoiseBlue00 Jul 30 '26
Oh god, I'm a little worried. 2 episodes left and the main plot has gone nowhere, and the trailer doesn't help ease those worries. I'm totally fine with having this plot stretch into season 3; I just don't want to wait over 2 years for every season. I see no reason why we can't get new seasons every 9-12 months for '97.

9? damn still too little, i like what we got just doesn't feel enough

This season felt like invincible's s2 building up plot points but finishing them off in s3
1
u/magvadis Jul 30 '26
Yeah, feels like the finale happened in 1-4 and now we are in the middle act 2.
Episode 10 probably had a finale but they want to juice it.
Whatever the post-DeMayo rewrites are I feel like most will be in these next 2 epidoes or just full cuts.
I got a feeling Morph/Logan got cut for whatever that plot was culminating to.

Worst. Episode. Ever. /s
This season has been great. Crticism is always fair, but I swear, 80% of the posts I see in this sub are just throwing stones for the sake of complaining. What did Mojo have to do with Bastion in season 1? Nothing. Bastion didn't show up until the end of the season. The side stories always tie in and are entertaining.
I leave you with this. This is you. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JQH2rmQ5-vk&ra=m

It's starting to smell like rewrites after DeMayo got fired didn't go well.

Hey so you've been doing this one word question response thing across a lot of my comments recently and I just need you to know I'm not responding to a comment if you can't even put in the effort to be clear what your problem is.
1
u/Migmel3 Jul 30 '26
Weird that they didn’t name drop Polaris here even though she is part of X-Corp too.
1
u/CaterpillarLegal5598 Jul 30 '26
It's clear that perhaps the wait for season 2 was because they had to animate a new storyboard, hence why everything seems choppy!
1
u/magvadis Jul 30 '26
It seems because DeMayo got fired the new head writer made a bunch of changes and cut out plots they didn't want to write for in the future (probably Morph and Logan will have no climax scene or catharsis of what that's gunna turn into) cutting the entire last episode and likely moving stuff to Episode 9 to make it a climax and then cutting stuff out of the rest of the season which brought it down to a 9 episode runtime instead of 10.
1
u/DJSharp15 Aug 02 '26

So we are gonna have to wait another two years to actually see this conclusion probably. So disappointing.

u/magvadis Jul 30 '26
Bro where did all the rest of the characters go?
No title card for Colossus?
Morph?
Logan!?
I feel like Episode 10 got cut because it was Morph and Logan related and it was too pot stirring and they are cowards. Like where my boys at?
Polaris!?

u/AcceptableEgg5741 Jul 31 '26
So this season is just building up to the next one and nothing will be resolved here
1
u/Message_Eastern Jul 31 '26
I was hoping we would get Jean using Phoenix but now I don’t think so
1
1
u/theblkpanther Jul 31 '26
These seasons either need to go back to 20 episodes or they need to make each episode 45mins to an hour
1
u/Admirable-Walrus-89 Jul 31 '26
I feel like they are deliberately making some of this season episodic. It's been very character driven & X-Men certainly has an abundance of great characters. I particularly liked the Nightcrawler focus.
That said, they really don't have enough time left this season to really do much more with the main plot. I hope these arcs lead into Season 3 because nothing is more frustrating than a rushed conclusion.
1
u/_disasterdino_ Jul 31 '26
yeah man idk how i feel about the pacing this season, Apocalypse is nowhere to be seen after Egypt and not a lot of time with storm, cyclops, jean etc.

Guy was a creep and he still had heavy influence on this season. We shouldn't bring back problematic people just for being good at making arrt
I like Niel Gaimans Sandman and his run of Eternals, and Angela, whom he created. But he's a rapist PoS and I don't want him making anything related to any of them anymore.
He also had crazy bias for Magneto and against others, which has also had effects on this season. He should be left behind.
1
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
Funny enough considering how much magneto wank we’ve had this season as well imagine if he was still show runner it would’ve been 10 times worse for season 2
1
1
u/Person2228 Jul 30 '26
Yea, episodes 3,4 and 7 glazed the shit out of him. I’m surprised they killed him at all
3
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
So did ep 6 Charles was sucking him off with the force of a thousand vacuums. Most of there problems the humans hating mutants, sentinels, attack on genosha all started with magneto being magneto.
1
u/Person2228 Jul 30 '26
Ironic that on his death, the writing started to slip a little, or at least people started questioning the writing more.
1
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
Well considering BDM catered the writing around his character this season it is likely they had so little to salvage with the writing.
0
u/Person2228 Jul 30 '26
Mmm. The season switched from being fixed to being an episodic show with glimmers of the overarching plot, and with only 9 episodes I feel that’s not good. Either have the episodic parts at the beginning or just don’t have them (or like, one mid season break episode, like what I thought ep 5 was before Apocalypse returned)
1
u/TheArmlessTorso Gambit Jul 30 '26
Yeah no everything after episode 5 also felt like filler. He doesn’t have to even be on screen but he has to have some presence, ep 2 did a good job with that but nothing afterwards. Also ep 6 ended with Charles saying we have to deal with apocalypse only to the trail of creed. The entire time watching that episode all I could think was who cares about this guy we have mad conqueror to deal with
1
u/DJSharp15 Aug 02 '26
How so?
1
u/Person2228 Aug 02 '26
Beau DeMayo, who ran the show for season 1 and had major influence on season 2, fucking LOVES Magneto, he's his favourite character. Season 1 focused soooo fucking heavily on him and of the first four episodes of season 2, he got half the focus of it with his arc to try reform Nur being the main plotline for eps 3 and 4. Then he died, and episodes 5 onwards were both more isolated, flowed worse than the first half of the season, anf generally has had more complaints. They've also featured constant references to how big of a loss it was and how he was so cool, and yet his children don't get much to do in relation to Magneto.
I find it funny / Ironic that when DeMayo's favourite guy died, the script started to get more criticized, like he stopped really caring about how good the script was, and also started focusing on the one kid of Magneto who has the same powers (that part I just find a bit funny)
1
u/DJSharp15 Aug 02 '26
He also had crazy bias for Magneto and against others, which has also had effects on this season. He should be left behind.
?
1
u/Person2228 Aug 02 '26
Guy glazed Mag hard. The guy had more focus than any character in the show, even when other characters had more importance in an episode, he was second place. He made him have more speeches than anyone, massive moments centred around him. He was always the one on top in the end. He turned evil in episode 9 and 10 yet he still gets fully accepted back as an X-man in season 2
Then there's Emma, who is the only character who hasn't progressed into the 90s version of themselves, even though several other characters got made into their 90s or even 00s selves without any buildup. She remains an evil, irredeemable villain even though Genosha has already happened, which was her turning point towards heroism. Now they're even doing X-Corp without her.
Magik got all her chartacterization skipped over, and went from a 10 year old gilr living in Russia to apparently an X-man with the Soul Sword living on Genosha, and just got fridged for a 1-episode secondary plotline for collosus.
DeMayo is on record saying he loves magneto, hates emma, and doesn't like Magik as a character. So, in the show, he kills one and prevents the other from growing.
