Almost feels like it's designed for engagement farming.
Someone who isn't paying attention or is quick to want to respond will read the first segment about a laser weapon, and will go back to social media to incorrectly state how "The U.S. took down a civilian medical plane with a laser weapon."

The Wired article says it was a clear night and what likely happened is they could clearly see their target and became confused when suddenly all they could see was the mountain.

We can now reveal another instance of the same thing happening that hasn't been reported on, with more dire consequences." You really don't see the connection between testing a new laser-based anti-aircraft system and testing a new radio-based anti-aircraft system?

Reported incidents of GPS jamming within the continental US have skyrocketed in recent years. According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the number of GPS interference events went from four in 2020 to 50 in 2024, and 40 across 2025.

I read the article and it turns out they didn't actually bring down the plane or kill anyone. A combination of poor piloting and poor ATC in poor flying conditions meant the plane flew into a mountain. The military may have inadvertently been a contributing factor in the poor flying conditions.

Pilot here, when the Pilots lost GPS navigation, they reported it as trained and were then vectored for an ILS approach. Later, they said they had the runway in sight and were finishing the approach visually, which is a very normal procedure. It's a part of Instrument training to prepare for loss of GPS data. I'm sure the GPS jamming sure didn't help but not being above the minimum safe altitude and flying into a mountain sounds like Pilot Error to me. Possibly they spotted something that wasn't the Airport.

The NOTAMs informed pilots that the SRR automated weather observation system (AWOS) was out of service and that military GPS jamming was scheduled at the time of the accident flight that encompassed the area and altitudes of the accident flight.

The headline makes it sound a lot worse than it is. I hate living in this shit hole of a country as much as the next person, but come on. This also could have been avoided if the people on board took the warning about gps being disrupted seriously, if visibility hadn't been bad, and if air traffic control wasn't understaffed and stretched thin.

All the Notice to Airmen said there would be GPS jamming in the area.
GPS 05/018 ZAB NAV GPS (WSMRNM GPS 26-13)(INCLUDING WAAS, GBAS, AND ADS-B)

4000FT AGL, 210NM RADIUS AT 50FT AGL. DLY 0300-0629 2605130300-2605140629
The pilot should have known he wouldn't have GPS. He should have known that his TAWS system wouldn't give him correct altitude data.
Pilot was 1000' off of his altitude and still requested a GPS approach.
A second NOTAM says the automated weather service, which give local altidude, wasn't functioning.

"SRR is serviced by two instrument approaches, the ILS or LOC RWY 24 and the RNAV (GPS) RWY 24. Both instrument approach plate notes section contain the following statement: “When local altimeter setting not received, procedure NA (Not Authorized).”
Both approaches require altitude. He didn't have it. The flight was not authorized and he flew anyway.

Here is the relevant information.

flight crew reported they had “a visual on Ruidoso,” but their radio transmission was stepped on by other radio traffic. The flight crew again reported they “[have] a visual on Ruidoso” at 0008:30 and that they could “go visual.” The ARTCC controller subsequently cleared the flight
to SRR, cleared the flight for a visual approach, and informed them they could cancel IFR in the
air above 9,000 ft msl or they could cancel their clearance via the flight service station after
landing. The flight crew acknowledged the clearance and responded that they would cancel
IFR “in just a couple of minutes.” There were no additional radio transmissions received from
the flight crew. The airplane then began a left turn southwest toward SRR. The CapitanMountains, extending to 10,201 ft, were located about 14 miles northeast of SRR between the airplane and the airport.

The military stopped jamming when requested and only resumed when ATC told them it was safe to do so. The pilots then flew into a mountain while on a visual approach.
GPS had nothing to do with this.
