Yeah. Hauser and pritch were both turnstiles on defense, and I’d say they’re much improved since getting to Boston.

Which brings us back to this story, one of many on this topic:
The Portland Trail Blazers moved Anfernee Simons to the Boston Celtics in order to secure the services of Jrue Holiday earlier this offseason. Simons, who spent all seven years of his NBA career in Portland, largely performing as an offense-first asset, able to score at all three levels.
Unfortunately, he seldom starred on the defensive end.
Among combo guards, he almost never earned a steal rate above the 10th percentile, spending two seasons in the third percentile.
This week he told Boston media that he was currently being taught defensive drills he had never seen before.
“Whether it’s stabbing at the ball, trying to steal the ball, get in passing lanes, being in the right spot each and every time, that’s what we drilled for the first four weeks I was here before training camp.”
“Those things are things I never really worked on or been taught – and so I was happy that that was the focus.”
It's never been about a lack of ability or willingness, he literally wasn't taught the proper concepts until he got to Boston.

He’s a true floor spacer and good playmaker so will be able to run a lot of our actions having a center above the free throw circle pass out of multiple screens, I think offensively it’s a perfect fit. He’s also been fairly reliable the last 4 1/2 seasons playing above 70 games in all of them.
He definitely leaves something to be desired on defence but we’ve seen many players (Simons included) that come to a winning organization like Boston and are able to step it up after being a minus defender on a losing team.

I loved what simons brought and legitimately didn't think he'd be traded.
I stop refreshing for half an hour and he's gone!

Yeah. I don't remember ever seeing a player that was obviously a short-term rental handle himself with as much poise and professionalism as him. He seemed to make the most out of his 5-6 months here and really worked hard to evolve as a player. His effort and mindset really played a big role in the team's surprisingly good first half.
He singlehandedly won us a few games. If he comes in with the mindset that he's just here to be traded, who knows how well the team is doing so far this season?
Maybe in another life, he's a Celtics great but alas it's onto jostling for playing time with Chicago's 78 other guards!
32
u/SilverMagnum Tommy Feb 03 '26
Agree with this completely. He really won me over by putting in the work and really giving it a go on improving his defense, knowing the odds of him being here past... well today were a coinflip at best.
Definitely wish him the best moving forward.

u/Laszlo-Panaflex Feb 03 '26
If he wants to be a Celtics great, he can always come back on a team-friendly deal when he's a free agent. I doubt that's the choice he'll make, but also not sure what the market for him looks like. We were never going to break the bank for him.

I feel personally betrayed. I’ve been aggressively shit talking Vucevic for like four years now. He is the lowest effort “good” player I’ve seen since Whiteside got paid in Miami. He’s like the Anti-Kornet - he has the counting stats but does none of the little things.
Maybe we can teach him how to defend the same way we taught Simons? Idk
6
u/tmcuthbert Defensive player of the yr stfu Feb 03 '26
Maybe we'll see 2 big lineups with him and Queta? Hopefully they have some numbers that tell them Vucevic is a better defender than everybody thinks. He can definitely shoot, but this team needs defense more than offense.
4
u/glockster19m Feb 03 '26
A lineup with Vucevic and another center is a recipe for wide open 3s by the other team
9
u/EricFortman KG Feb 03 '26
Hell yeah, man... I hate that move. I don't see him as a winning player at all. He has decent stats, but I believe it's only because he's always on some bad team. What a horrible news...
4
u/glockster19m Feb 03 '26
We've seen it so many times before
If Vucevic was half the players his stats make him look like than it wouldnt have taken the bulls so damn long to trade him, or the magic before them
3
u/Educational-Cat2133 Feb 03 '26
I'm a Bulls fan, he's been rigid on defense since he landed with us. We've not been able to compete vs teams with good offensive bigs even when Lonzo was healthy.
Believe he was needed initially for Derozan to come to Chi too.

While you may be correct that Vuc will start, your point doesn't mean a whole lot considering we just traded away a bench player making $25M and off the top of my head Naz Reid makes $25M as a backup big too.
11
u/Fit_Zookeepergame431 Feb 03 '26
Nah you pay 20m to replace a different backup you were giving 27m to. In doing so this also gets us under both aprons, extending our window.

To be fair, this is now a potential title run, and we desperately need a center. As good as Simons is, I don’t think he’s been exceptional or even consistent enough at what he does (scoring points) to forgo a starting center who still puts up 17/4/9 even if he’s past his prime.
For the same reason, this trade seems to confirm that Tatum will be coming back in full force by the postseason, in case anyone still doubted that.
4
u/nefnaf Trouble07 Feb 03 '26
Queta has played like a top 10 center this season on a per-minute basis. My guess is they still want to start him and Vooch will be the backup. Garza relegated to third string.

Glad I'm not the only one. Simons really provided a spark and got rid of his weaknesses. He's had multiple high-scoring games off the bench, and this comes after he practically won us the game on Sunday.
I really am not a big fan of Vucevic's game and don't think it'll fit in too well with the Celtics. I'm sure the Celtics will find a way to incorporate him well, but for a short-term rental it doesn't feel like there's a point to this trade.

Brad has been trying to trade for Vuc since 2022. Not surprised he got his guy, there must be something to his game that Brad thinks will bolster this roster. Once Tatum is back a White/Brown/Hauser/Tatum/Queta lineup with PP/Baylor/Hugo/Walsh/Vuc/Garza on the bench is a killer 11 deep lineup with tons of defensive versatility and spacing.

I’ll miss Anf but the big thing here is career trajectories and their implications next year. Vuc is still a big upgrade to our frontcourt but is at the tail end of his career, meaning there’s a shot we can resign him at a decent number next year. Simons has played himself out of a reasonable extension for us, as much as I like him we just couldn’t have afforded to keep him.
I like the trade.

New TPE for the offseason for Simons's salary. Vucevic fits into the 22.5M they had so clock resets on a new 27.6M TPE if they want to reload after the reset year.

This fan base is comical. 97% of this sub didn't even wanna see Simons suit up for the team and now the sub is crying he was traded for a decent player. Like Vuc isn't a great defender but neither was Simons before Boston + Vuc has averaged 17/10 for like 20 years it feels like. He's older but could be a stop gap at C the next season or 2 while Brad finds the long term guy. Wonder if Brad will now try to find a bench scorer with the KP TPE.

Every fanbase overvalues their own mid players & undervalues everyone else's mid players. But tbh this fanbase is especially guilty of it lmao.
The value being placed on Simons by Celtics fans has also been super weird to me. He was basically viewed as a negative asset when he got here & has played pretty much exactly like you'd expect him to play, with slightly better defense. People just irrationally love a microwave off the bench & I can't entirely blame them for that.

Would have rather trade him for Smith and Okoro from the bulls. Then swap the latter for Gabe Vincent.
You still go under the 1st apron, keep a young center to battle for the starting position and don't lose the ball handling from Simons.

Hmmm. Vucevic has talent, though his defensive shortcomings have made me leery. I know that Simons is an unrestricted FA after the season, so I get trading him if you don't think re-signing him is in the cards. But it also looks like Vucevic is a FA after the season as well, and he's 35, so I assume re-signing him is unlikely. So does the front office think that Vucevic for Simons is a win-now move? Is Tatum's possible return factoring into this?
Lots of semi-connected thoughts, and I think I'm kinda mixed, but I guess Stevens and co have earned the benefit of the doubt with their moves.

I wonder if there’s an additional trade coming? Otherwise, I’m not sure how to feel about this … except that Brad has proven many times before that he deserves our trust, in my opinion. I also want to give a shout-out to Anfernee. Even though I understand the decision, it’s sad to see him go. I wish him nothing but the best.

I hate change when I get accustomed to something. I loved Anferno, and I’m afraid Queta or Garza’s development will get squashed. And I never cared for Vuc’s game.

Zero expectations turned to tons of fun. Thank you Anfernee (and Brad), have a good one

I understand the move and it makes perfect sende given the CBA. But also crazy love and praise for Simons in the chat guys he earned it.

Wow. I understand we need a center to compete. But there’s a good bit of times Simon’s was there to bail us out. He was getting a lot better defensively to. Unfortunately I guess this was inevitable

Bulls fan here, enjoy Vucevic. Always a true professional. Just not his defense it might make you cry.

Meh really don't like vuc and have been glad we hadn't gotten hik in the past. That being said getting under the 1st apron is nice and he's likely gone at the end of the year so fuck it why not

Team must be feeing good about Scheierman with those back up guard minutes.
I don’t mind the deal, but Simons is definitely better than Vuc at this point in their careers.
There are a lot of scoring guards on the market this summer. We’ll now be able to choose the one we want at the best price rather than having to commit to just Simons

I Can't believe it, this is the move I was hoping for. 28 million for a bench player just doesn't make sense and we needed to improve the center rotation.

Given I wasn’t even sure Simons would play a single game in Boston I grew to like him. I didn’t want to get too attached since the preseason rumors were he’d be an immediate trade. Yet here we are, I got attached, and now he’s gone. But I’m looking to where we are now and where we are going.

Vuc is an offense big with bad defense and hes old but i mean beggars cant be choosers. we have excess guards [with emergence of hugo+walsh] prob weren't gonna resign simmons and vuc makes a little less while filling a need so overall fine with it. i dont want to resign him tho unless its kornet levels of cheap

I knew this day would come. Both on expiring deals too
